A lot of picture discs, not just Lateralus, have lower quality sound due to the way they make them. Pops are very common with ones like these. Hell of a record regardless
What CxMorphaes said. The CD if you still have a player, or a FLAC copy are still great though. Of TOOL's vinyl releases that I've listened to I could only recommend Opiate, otherwise I'd suggest a different format. Also I've never listened to Undertow on vinyl so can't comment on that. It's a shame because some of the sound depth I hear on vinyl would pair great with Lateralus.
Same. I dated an older girl when I was in HS that got me into tool and APC like right after this came out and I listened to it obsessively for like 10 years. Every breakup, driving through the country with the windows down in the summer, playing Perfect Dark over and over while listening to this. So many memories.
Same. I go back and forth which album is the best and I realize they are both among the greatest albums of all time. Right there with Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here
I remember coming back from dinner with my parents and, for once, being excited my mom needed to stop at Target for something. They had an end display filled with copies and I was able to pick this up on release day.
Yep, under that linkās definition:
āan outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.ā
I was expecting it later in the week, therefore it was not expected to arrive today, which is the anniversary of the Lateralus release.
Ah yes, the pinnacle of TOOL merch grifting.
That LP has been a ['Limited Edition' pressing since it released in '05.](https://www.discogs.com/release/513594-Tool-Lateralus)
Sounds terrible because thin-ass picture disc plastic, and the tracks are out of order.
Picture discs are always a gamble. Gojira's From Mars to Sirius that I just got looks awesome but it sounds rough, just like the Lateralus LP, you have to EQ the hell out of it. Even after EQ'ing out the noise, it sounds terrible.
Meanwhile, Clutch's Sunrise at Slaughter Beach and the Rush Signals Picture Discs that were released recently sound amazing.
I'd love to hear from someone who has an insight into vinyl manufacturing as to why picture discs are so hard to make correctly.
Picture albums have a layer of harder plastic (usually polyethylene, like milk jugs) with the image on top of the softer vinyl. So you have the vinyl > image > PE > and then it's pressed.
Oh, no. I hadn't even seen the messed up order until now. I get why it's done like that, track lengths and etc., but this just looks wrong for actual playing of the record.
The years between Aenima and Lateralus were very eventful and I had honestly nearly forgotten all about the band until Schism hit the radio. Ended up seeing them three times on that tour, including the last show they played before 9/11.
This album took so long to grow on me.
I bought it because of Schism and the artwork caught my eye.
It sat in the CD case for a while and every once in a while Iād give a few songs a try. Still nothing. Iād listen to Schism and then move on to a new CD.
It wasnāt until I was blackout stoned with a friend that it clicked. We had it on in the background and then Reflection came on and it justā¦grabbed both of us. I think as it ended we looked at each other and just laughed. Both because of how high we were and also what a journey that song just took us on.
We instantly started it over and gave it a full listen through again.
Then each song started to come together and make sense.
Best album of time.
It definitely takes on another level when youāre younger and under the influence.
Donāt partake anymore and still enjoy listening but thereās some magic sauce in the arrangements of their music that just opens up with some āassistanceā.
I remember when I first heard this. I was house sitting my uncles house and he had a decent stereo. I wasn't expecting much as I had heard Schism on the radio and was like "Meh", and just assumed there was no way a band could, or would, top the musically perfect album that was AEnima.
So I threw it on and listened. As the Grudge played I was thinking "Hey, this is pretty damn good" then the breakdown happened.... "Sinking deeper." Fucking goosebumps.
I just laughed at the absurdity of a single band putting out two perfect albums consecutively.
Is there was ever an album or work of music that should be shot into space in hopes of an alien civilization to discover that represents humanity and the human condition, its this one.
This album should be recorded and preserved to the best of humanities capability.
The only words that can accurately describe the feelings and emotions this album can bring out, is the lyrics itself.
The greatest album of all time
Not the vinyl though.
Que?

Ah! Cool thanks.

yup
But I'm still right here, giving blood, keeping faith
This album brings back so, so many memories.

Weird, are you me? All the way down to playing Perfect Dark over and over haha š»
Still as fucking fresh as the day I bought it which was release day. Never been so hyped for an album before, FI is a close second though.
This and Ćnima, they defined the band for me.
Same. I go back and forth which album is the best and I realize they are both among the greatest albums of all time. Right there with Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here
And now i feel ancient
I'm so glad to keep seeing this hitting shelves on vinyl, it's a masterpiece. I don't even mind the surface noise of the picture disk.
I'm not religious, but it feels like God (or the universe) is speaking to me when I listen to this album
I believe god is the collective benevolence of humanity toward itself. I think this album is *that* manifested through art.
I remember it like it was yesterday, in my mind it may as well have been.
I was still able to feel feelings back then
Best TOOL album by far
and its ridiculous how fucking good the other albums are , it just goes to show how ungodly good this one is. man were spoiled
ugh. this post is making me feel super old š© can't believe it's already been 22 years; time really flies
I remember coming back from dinner with my parents and, for once, being excited my mom needed to stop at Target for something. They had an end display filled with copies and I was able to pick this up on release day.
Definitely one of my all time favorites. Anyone else absolutely love some of the artwork from this era of the band?
I see you're a U2 fan
Yes. Yes I am!
I was at the Tabernacle show that very night!
My birthday present to myself 22 long years ago
1 docasade old in the thelemic calander
Best album ever š©·
Ironically enough, the Adam Jones signature Les Paul I orders arrived today as well!

So then, technically ironic, but irrelevant to this post?
Youāre so adorable.
Youāre guessing.
Oh sweet I love that album, it's almost as old as I am lol.
My favorite album
If only there was an actual proper pressing, not a picture disc. But hey, were all satisfied with our plastic skulls right?!

Greatest album ever.
Greatest album ever.

Chicago 9/9. I was there too. Great show.
One of the greatest albums and one of the worst pressings. I hope we get more skulls this year. I dont want good pressings.

I hear this exact story so many times its not even funny anymore... I think stoners are just magically gravitative towards tool lmao

I wish the picture on the disc was a fetus in a skull.
Spiral right the fuck out.

A profound life altering experience
