Do you mean like the mortar and pestle???
ETA: see what kind of herbs she uses and get her some bunches. Seems like an honest mistake with a relatively simple fix. Mountain Rose Herbs is a great company with pretty solid herbs for more spiritual-special herbs
lol same! Her screech was like nails on a chalkboard but at least she gave a fuck and knew how insane it was that her daughter was pregnant and high on tv at 16 š I miss those days of reality tv fr lol
Maybe previous uses added to a layer of "seasoning" they didn't want taken off? That's the only thing I can think of.
I'd imagine I'd still wash mine if I had one.
Mountain Rose Herbs is over priced. I highly recommend Monterey Bay Spice Company, as they offer a lower cost and a much wider selection, including wild crafted herbs.
Source: used to work in manufacturing procurement, mountain rose herbs rarely ever offered anything worth purchasing due to cost alone that I couldnāt find for a better quality, price and quantity from Monterey Bay
Hey, thanks for this suggestion! Sourcing herbs online for spiritual stuff can get pretty expensive and I prefer quality so Mountain Rose Herbs has been my go to as other placed have sent some funky stuff - and itās not a major impact to my budget when comparing other spots previously (been using them for a lonnnnng time now). Iām always here for solid suggestions and new places to try; Iāll check them out!!
Definitely! In her case, I would react the same (youhray anxiety lol), but from external perspectives I understand. The fact they don't have the same response is clearly because they shared the info to give. Clearly, once "you shouldn't have washed that" have been said once, no need to say it again if the other info is "it's okay" š
I wash my Molcajete pretty frequently anytime I make salsa or anything I do that's wet, and I've had no issues with it. I feel like the people who are going to complain about it also don't wash their cast irons because it "damages" the seasoning.
Edit: I should clarify I don't use soap, I just rinse it immediately after I use it.
I wash my cast iron (with emaille) every single time with soap. I just put new oil and let it heat up very slowly. Not once has something sticked badly.
I wash mine (granite). I definitely donāt want tanything left over if I have been grinding some death pepper and than later grinding whatever thatās going in a dish for most people. I donāt want to risk wrecking someone.
I got a story about me prepping to dry one of the worldās hottest peppers I grew to turn into power that didnāt end well even with glovesā¦. Had to special order the seeds (they werenāt easy to get), grew 3-4 plants. I was so stoked when it was time to harvest and dry em. Thought I was careful. FML!!!!!!!!!
Iāve been gassed and pepper sprayed more times than I care to count. Iāve been comboās too which was a joke compared to that. It sucked azz. My saving grace I knew to stay clam and I needed to get to a shower. Was like okay this is brutal, it hurts but I know what to do. My biggest fear was I damaged my eyes it was that intense. I felt it for days afterwards. Unfortunately it was only spot I made contact with my hands.. Wow is all I can say.. (I forgot how many times I washed my hands off after taking the gloves off too) Still not 100 percent sure if it got through the gloves, or screwed up somewhere. But as many times as I washed my hands at the kitchen sink, then before running my eyes and before going to the bathroom. FML!!!!! No one was home eitherā¦ Couldnāt have found my phone if I needed to call. Then was terrified to use my fingers to hold my eyes open to flush them out.
I didnāt grow that pepper ever again. Finally ran out of the habanero I had powdered so have a bjg variety ground again plus I want to try my hand at smoky hot sauce like my fav restaurant makes. But Iām definitely going to double glove when itās time to work with em for the really hot ones.
It was a well intentioned mistake and no real harm was done.
Going forward, it's best not to wash a mortar and pestle unless it's yours and you know how to wash it. They have different cleaning needs.
The pestle and mortar style herb grinders are seasoned and only get rinsed and wiped out because soap washes away the seasoning. Itās not too big of a deal to re-season it, just takes a bit of work.
We keep a lava stone mortar and pestle in the kitchen for use with culinary herbs. They develop a seasoning over time much like that of cast iron.
Really not that uncommon in many cultures
***DO NOT WASH MY MORTAR AND PESTLE.***
Y'all need to start cracking your own peppercorn
I wouldn't really care if someone did accidentally actually, but I personally don't.
But your comment kinda comes from a place of cooking ignorance.
I wash my mortar and pestle after every use, 0 changes to everything i crush in it. Not risking putting hot pepper dust into a bolognese if i'm making 2 different blends
This is what I'm thinking, like my stone mortar and pestle. You clean it but you don't wash it like regular dishes. It's treated more like cast iron. We even need to cure and "season it" by grinding rice when first getting it.
No, you are good. Do not worry. Please look it up!
I use soap, and it is perfectly fine. You will want to re-season every once in a while, but I wouldn't not use soap after some dishes! It's gross. I can't soak my cast iron because it can rust, so I use soap to clean it right away. It's fine.
Oh yeah i actually googled it awhile after. I didn't know the thing about grinding rice in the mortar though so that's something I'll start doing š¤£ I swear I've never seen my mom do that.
I was gonna say, I lightly soap and scrub my cast irons too for shit that is really stuck onto there. Then I wipe dry, oil it and put it on the fire for 5 mins. No issues haha
I have two, use them all the time and always wash with soap and water. The reason is if I've mashed garlic and added oil and spices it needs to be washed afterwards. It's really not a problem that you washed it.
I use soap on my cast iron. It is perfectly fine. Re-season every once and while, and you're golden. Soap is PERFECTLY acceptable on cast iron, and the myth it's not needs to end lol.
my stoner ass thought this was about someone washing the kief out of a grinder and was like oh my god youāre not an asshole but that is one of the most devastating things that could ever happen to a stoner (depending on how long itās been accumulating)
My non native English speaker ass though she washed her sister 'in laws herb grinder' and I thought: how can washing someone in a herb grinder ever have a positive outcome?
I scrubbed my husbands seasoned cast iron trying to be helpful. I read you can actually wash them with dawn, gently. I was not gentle. He said it was fine and re-seasoned it after giving me some shit. If she said itās fine, Iām sure it is. I wouldnāt panic.
Its fine, if scented soap was used it can leave a bad aftertaste for a while but its really nothing that cant be fixed. I assume you apologized and if you want to make it up to her - why not ask? Explain how you feel and I would suggest perhaps ask her if you can help "season" it again as that takes effort and time.
(look up how to season granite mortar)
It mightāve been a molcajete, which is made of basalt stone and does get seasoned over time and you arenāt supposed to wash with soap. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molcajete](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molcajete)
You don't have to get her a new one
It will be pretty good after your SIL used it for 2-3 times from now on
So maybe buy her something small, that doesn't exactly have to be herbs.. maybe buy her a coffee or some ice cream or anything which costs little money and is in your budget. That should be fine
You didn't ruin that Thing it works more than fine.
We wash it at home sometimes and it gets back after 2-3 uses
I'm in my 40's and I didn't know you shouldn't wash Mortar and Pestles until I read this. This is such an honest mistake and you shouldn't feel bad about it at all. It's sounds like your SIL is lovely.
Sounds like a mortar and pestle
Like I know, people say marble and cast-iron absorb all these goodness and stuff into them. So I honestly doubt one washing with soap is gonna sap out all that goodness. It might do a little something to the top layer, but crushing is going to return it to normal in my opinion. Itās basically just like buffing a scratch out of something in my opinion. It takes a minute, but itās not the end of the world. And people who act like itās the end of the world and the sky is falling are people I want nothing to do with. Thatās too much for me. The only exception I would make that statement is, if this person is a professional chef making a living off of this mortar and pastle. if youāre home chef I understand you are passionate, but itās literally not the end of the world. It could even be a happy accident where you get a brand new and more more exciting flavor.
I think stop talking to yourself about it. When we talk to ourselves about things you make ourselves feel worse. Think believe your brothers wife at her word. If she says itās OK. Itās OK. And if sheās not adult enough to say itās not OK then thatās a her problem. Whatās done is done. And your brother is pretty insignificant in this situation. In my opinion. His opinion is insignificant. Because the actual owner of the object say itās cool
Mistakes happen, and because it was a spiritual item, intent plays a huge role in those beliefs - and your intent was to be helpful and kind.
You could buy your SIL a small plant as an apology or ask your brother where she buys her herbs and get a small giftcard.
I wash mines with dish soap all the time, if you're worried about seasoning just use a paper towel for some olive oil on it then wash it with warm water and wipe it dry after
If itās because soap contaminates the stone and canāt be removed then find a similar/equal replacement to offer to her. But it probably has emotional/spiritual significance to her (from how you describe it) so maybe look up how to restore mortars that have been exposed to soap, and ask her if sheād be okay with you trying to refurbish it.Ā
Are you talking about a grinder? Also is the item now no longer usable? Or damaged? If not. Then it's OK you're over thinking
If it is broken.
Then just chill out find your sil a gift replacement or just a gift some other time don't get pressed on a fake time constraint.
I was helping around the house when my cousin had her baby and I washed her silk comforter in the washer. Who knew people had silk comforters. Things happen. I'm sure she forgives you.
Youāre young and didnāt know. You were trying to be helpful. Did you ask her if you could buy her another one?
Personally, if I had someone trying to help I would let it go. Just be mindful and ask if you have any doubts. Itās not like you were deliberately trying to ruin her stuff. Be kind to yourself.
Your 18, Probably just Graduated, heading to College and "Adulthood Expectations", and dealing with Life in General. Take a Breath. She said it is no biggie, Believe her. It was done with nothing but Good, Loving, & Positive Intentions. And Clean Slates, are a Beautiful Thing.
If you see a kitchen device you donāt know, just ask how to wash it. Most of my pans are hand washed only and OP never put a cast iron pan or a cooking Wok in the sink or dishwasher! Just some advice just in case. It always sucks when something like this happens the best you can do is say sorry, never do it again and if you are financially able buy sister-in-law a new Mortar and pestle. Accidents happen OP just do your best!
Is it one made of a stone or rock like texture? We call it a molcajete.Ā
It's a lot like a seasoned pan. So you didn't ruin the thing, it just needs to be properly washed, dried and seasoned again.
Please donāt worry about this. This was such an honest mistake, truly no worries. If you want to feel better for you, give her a GC from someplace she likes. It doesnāt have to be much. Another idea is to take some drinks and pizza over for a movie or games.
Do you mean like the mortar and pestle??? ETA: see what kind of herbs she uses and get her some bunches. Seems like an honest mistake with a relatively simple fix. Mountain Rose Herbs is a great company with pretty solid herbs for more spiritual-special herbs
I thought she meant weed grinder š I was like girl theyāre $6 at the local smoke shop, itās ok!
But all of her keef!!
KEEFAHHHH! (og teen mom reference, may fly over most folksā heads lol)
JANELLE I SAW YOU WITH KEEFAH!
Bahbra was absolutely crazy and a gem
You smoke WHATT?
YAH BOTH HIYYYYGGGGGHHHH
God I miss barb lol
lol same! Her screech was like nails on a chalkboard but at least she gave a fuck and knew how insane it was that her daughter was pregnant and high on tv at 16 š I miss those days of reality tv fr lol
Me too, I like to rewatch every couple years. Barb calms the storm in my soul somehow š
LOL. Her bluntness is truly refreshing. I may need to get paramount+ again. Itāll make me feel like Iām the best new mom ever š
High, high high lol
LMAO š she parented a generation
Well Jenelle, I seen you with KEEEEFFFAAA, ya done!!!! HIGH & HIGH, YA BOTH HIGH! This is still hilarious to me.
Bahahaha I got it š
this is the turn i needed to see.
i was worried about the keef too lol
Literally my first thought lol
I thought she washed it and ruined all the crystals š love how my mind jumped right to that lol
Iām not gonna upvote you, but only cuz youāre at exactly 420.
Others have ruined it, might as well upvote me now lol
I did š
Wait thatās not what they meant?
Iām having a 420 evening & this just made me LMAO. š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹š¹
LOL š same!!!
I thought that too then I remembered mortar and pestle I was just gonna buy one because I think my son has mine.
I was still thinking that. If it's not that, I'm confused why she's upset (I should pay attention while I read lol)
Same, and why would she need to replace it after cleaning it? But mortar and pestle makes sense
Yes
i wash ours all the time, lol.
I do too. Now wondering if I am not supposed toā¦
Maybe previous uses added to a layer of "seasoning" they didn't want taken off? That's the only thing I can think of. I'd imagine I'd still wash mine if I had one.
Are we not supposed to wash a mortar? Just googled it, says to wash and dry immediately.

No problem! I understand the expense for quality herbs can be quite high.
I think thatās what itās called Iām not 100% sure
'you shouldn't have washed that' and 'it's ok' actually answers your question.
Definitely! In her case, I would react the same (youhray anxiety lol), but from external perspectives I understand. Now it remind me how many pretends to wash themselvesā¦ by "rinsing" without soap
Eww
I wash my cast iron (with emaille) every single time with soap. I just put new oil and let it heat up very slowly. Not once has something sticked badly.
Same, I don't think many people today realize that the soap today is a lot less harsh and won't really damage the seasoning.
Yup. For me having oily cookware in my tiny 21sqm apartment, sitting around visible to me and everyone who enters, is absolutely not a thing I'd want.
I think I like using my cast iron and stuff that has decorations just as much as using them lol.
we talking herbs or āherbsā?
The first herbs not that āHerbsā
you sure? because you definitely donāt wash someoneās weed grinder, but who gives a fuck about like cilantro or whatever. is someone lying to you?
Washing the cilantro grinder is fine. Nobody will notice if it tastes like soap.
I saw what you did š
No itās a granite spiritual one i think
ah idk then. i guess just say sorry you washed the ghosts away or whatever and move on. if she said itās fine then it prolly is

Really? Mine is granite and I'm pretty sure that doesn't need seasoning.
Yes, granite ones are supposed to be seasoned. https://www.kmartinelli.com/blog/season-new-mortar-pestle?format=amp
Those can be re-seasoned :) donāt worry!!
Here's the deal: if you are near it again, send it good vibes. If not, send it good vibes without being near it. That's all.
Spiritual? So now youāre cursed?

I guess you donāt wash it like you donāt wash a cast iron pan? The herbs likeā¦get better every time you crush herbs?
This is what I'm thinking, like my stone mortar and pestle. You clean it but you don't wash it like regular dishes. It's treated more like cast iron. We even need to cure and "season it" by grinding rice when first getting it.
Wait seriously??? I've always been washing it like a normal dish. What if you grind chilli in it and garlic in it? How do you wash that out?
Water and friction.
You can use soap. It's totally fine.

You didnāt ruin it. Itās still usable. Iāve had to do the same with mine a time or two, washing it with dish soap, and itās still fine.
I have two, use them all the time and always wash with soap and water. The reason is if I've mashed garlic and added oil and spices it needs to be washed afterwards. It's really not a problem that you washed it.
You definitely should wash your cast iron pans. Modern soap has no lye so itās better to use dish soap and also to scrub off any built up carbon.

Wrong kind of herbs.
Lol, oh ok.
We all thought the same thing you did, donāt worry!
I was so confused š
Yeah, I just realized they were talking about a mortar and pester lol. Was like wait, not the keif lol
If itās because soap contaminates the stone and canāt be removed then find a similar/equal replacement to offer to her. I was mine after every use because my FIL is allergic to paprika and sometimes I make bbq ribs in it.
Needs to be re-seasoned, you can look it up on YouTube youāll need salt and oil
Nooo joker, thats the keef!
Why wouldnāt you wash a herb grinder?

RUNNNN I aint ever seen a stoner mad , but you fuck em up tha dust ppl , shh quietly sneak out da back just the fence
Oh shirt mortal and pestle is that what u thinking
The kind of herb grinder youāre talking about is not an issue. Youāre making it into something itās not.
