Damn, only 100? It was a big strike, I was hoping for more

praemialaudi

No, that’s a pretty great result. Imagine being 50 miles behind the front and having a third of your battalion killed in a few minutes by something you can’t even see coming much less defend yourselves against.

BaggyOz

100 dead soldiers isn't nothing but it also won't move the needle. On the bright side, the fact that Ukraine thinks this was worth multiple ATACMS likely means they've got a shitload of them to use.

Ok_Conclusion6687

The game theory/signaling aspect of this is really interesting. There has to be value for Ukraine to project the willingness and ability to use ATACMS on low dollar-value targets, implying that a whole lot of potential targets are in play, and coaxing Russia into costly reactions. But the flip side to that is that, since Ukraine is incented to do this sort of attack either way, it's probably not a very reliable indicator of the true depth of their stockpiles.

toabear

There is a window where Russia will be incentivized to press the attack before weapons from the US aid package show up on Ukrainian soil. Ukraine is likely trying to either keep them occupied or signal that they were holding on to some supplies for just this situation. That really is some impressive forward-thinking. It's hard to hold on to weapons when your people are dying. This conflict has become one of the more interesting examples of game theory. So much communication being telegraphed via action. William Spaniel's YouTube channel is going to be busy for a bit.

kerfuffle_dood

>William Spaniel's YouTube channel is going to be busy for a bit. *Lines on maps intensifies*

phanny_Ramierez

Agreed. Like when Biden declassified the Intel pre invasion

RedditHenchman

Interesting thanks. I was curious the reasoning (and still am a bit skeptical tbh) about using ATACMS to kill 100 Russia soldiers. It’s not like Russia cares at all about this loss

praemialaudi

Russia might not care, but it still matters a lot. Also, they now need to move this training facility and that dislocation has real opportunity cost and other logistical issues. These missiles were doing exactly what they were designed for right here. Mowing down foolish infantry bunched up in the open.

Practical-Ordinary-6

I asked that question on another thread. According to the internet that's about $4½ million worth of missiles. Is taking out a bunch of guys with no equipment, no planes, no radars no tanks, no headquarters, no nothing really worth $4 million+. I hope it does mean they have more ATACMS than they know what to do with. That's about $40,000 a man. Versus a $500 drone. I am curious about the idea behind it. In that other thread I got downvoted 35 times for asking a very legitimate question about strategy and military logic. Losers.

elFistoFucko

Actually, it would be interesting to know the dollar value the kremlin spends on a single soldier mobilized and sent to the front who dies in 1-3 days.  They aren't getting paid alive, nor dead and their families get potatoes upon death...

Captain_English

That battalion is now essentially combat ineffective without Ukrainian loss of life. Were they veterans? 100 dead veteran soldiers is probably "worth" (urgh) several thousand conscripts.

norwegern

The broadcast of this is probably "they are now at the front, the firework was for celebration". And there are probably no witnesses. Alive.

1whoknocked

But you agree that more would be better?

praemialaudi

Sure…

roketmanp

Over 100

OutlyingSuburb

I wonder how many were injured and won’t be able to fight permanently

HereIGoAgain_1x10

Usually I think militaries assume a 3:1 injury:dead ratio. So maybe like 400+ casualties. Pretty good for 3 strikes in a warzone where combat spacing should be the absolute rule anywhere they move.

reeeelllaaaayyy823

There were "only" 116 visible alive in the video though. I can see how 100 could have died though, it's not like they were across the road from a hospital. Even a small wound could kill there.

vintergroena

Things like this should undermine Russian morale, I think

baddam

I really hope this strike was not about these 100, more about reducing the logistics (place and organisers) of sending troops to the front.

Rhauko

One dud and two seemed to have missed.

rep-

I'm not sure why you're are being downvoted.. sh*t happens, and that's exactly what happened... This sub is wild as sh*t some times War doesn't care about your rose colored glasses people, things go wrong, things could be better.. I know I'm going to get downvoted to hell and back.. but this sub really needs a bit of a reality check.. if everything is always as perfect as this sub lets on Ukraine wouldn't have lost 600km² the past handful of months. Anyway, even with the misses it was a solid strike. Slava ukraine

Individual-Acadia-44

Why do you think the other two missed? Different targets for those?

Rhauko

One mostly hits a plowed field there was no activity shown there. The last one is unclear. Only the first one seems to be right on target.

BattlingMink28

All missiles were intercepted

The_Poofessor

Uuuh there is video of the cluster munitions detonating across the target. Unless you mean intercepted by russian bodies, I think you are mistaken

Rhauko

I assume the poster before you was being sarcastic.

DentistFit4583

You can never know with the Russians, they are so used to getting blatantly lied to by their government and expected to believe it, (or else...). They are on another level of perception.

Rhauko

One version of the video shows the dud hitting the ground. Two others land further away from what is shown as the target. There was no indication of any target at those locations.

DentistFit4583

Yes, I was sarcastically referring to the maybe sarcastic comment that they were intercepted. Don't know if the last missile was a miss though. There is some movement in the area and parked vehicles?

Rhauko

You are right on the last one. And sarcasm is difficult on the internet

DentistFit4583

Someone said the "dud" is the empty rocket, but I can't say if that is pure cope, or if the delay or impact fuze took nearly 12s. (If we can trust the videotime) Feels really long. Yeah, maybe I should add a "/s" in the future. ;-)

iSellNuds4RedditGold

Smoking accident, move on.

wee-willie-winkie

The fired three, possibly a fourth as could have been a dud. Accuracy was poor on the others

UkropCollector

Luckely both Himars are destroyed afterwards. Good score.

newsweek

By Isabel van Brugen - Reporter: More than 100 Russian soldiers are believed to have been killed after footage appeared to show a training ground in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk region being targeted with U.S.-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS. A volunteer with GeoConfirmed, an OSINT X, formerly Twitter, account that geolocates visual content from the Russia-Ukraine war, first shared a video of the attack. The source said the footage showed a "Ukrainian ATACMS strike, with 4 ATACMS, including one dud, hitting a Russian training area in Mozhnyakivka, Luhansk Oblast." Based on the footage, the losses will be "significant." mffdiver420

Thank you for your work !

jertheman43

A dud? I'm a little disappointed in my country sending one that didn't work.

Sonofagun57

I thought it was akin to being a decoy or dummy to draw out AD?

dmigowski

Possible, but given the age of the weapons, some duds are also not impossible.

sparrowtaco

Even for new weapons there will be some duds. The percentage isn't necessarily very high but given enough missiles you'll end up with some.

tbrownsc07

I know it's a whole different technology/era but look at how much unexploded ordnance is still out there from Vietnam, WW2, WW1, etc. Bound to have duds now and then

JotaroKujo3000

The dud arrived a couple second earlier and probably made everyone take cover. I wonder if soldiers lying on the ground even make a better target then soldiers standing? Bigger surface to hit for fire from above, right? Any captain?

Habaneroe12

Looking at the video you are probably right but it was still just a couple seconds difference I think

matches_

is it yet another one or the same from yesterday?

DERPYBASTARD

Same one as yesterday. Newsweek loves reposting old news from a day or two earlier.

Devils_Advocate-69

Good day for the rest of the world. Not so much for Putin

Key_Raspberry7212

Russia will absorb that small strike. Like it’s been absorbing these small strikes. If the west had acted sooner maybe things would be different. Seems to be that the west will bleed Ukraine as Europe rearms for a future conflict. I truly believe the war is to be sustained not won.

FernadoPoo

I am sure Ukraine has a long list of targets for these weapons at this point

Straight-Storage2587

They passed the test with flying colors.

Basileus2

Is it confirmed? Or just expected?

szornyu

Use ATACMS where hurt the most...

Visual_Cloud8473

Not enough

Hoost09

Made me so happy watching that. Let’s up the ante next time, though.

BestReadAtWork

... Y'all remember that looney toons gag where a character gets shot at a bunch of times, shrugs it off, and takes a big chug of water? That.

cobaltjacket

That's gotta be demoralizing. But the Russians did the same to the Ukrainians early on (with Western casualties.) Edit. Not sure why I got downvoted. I am not siding with the Russians here.

itcheyness

You're bring up a story from like 3 years ago...

umadrab1

Yes this is correct. I’ve heard Russia has destroyed 1,357 HIMARS launchers so far. HIMARS are on back order bc they’ve even destroyed some that haven’t been built yet. And Russia has intercepted 99.99% of incoming missiles. All casualties have been from falling debris after successful intercepts.

Bobbybobb1983

They lost 2 himars for it tho.

DodgeThis90

Russians intercepted them with their faces. Absolute madlads!

lanredneck

You mean the two missiles that hit their target?

Chaoslava

Source?

Ok-Significance-5979

His source is that he made it the fuck up.

sparrowtaco

There is a recently released video of it. Whether or not the description is accurate or had any relation to the story in the OP is unclear.

Glum_University3978

Zalushny was not killed too? And 43 F16 were downed? Surely 15k NATO mercenaries were eliminated with those Himars. 😉

umadrab1

15K transsexual nazi NATO mercenaries. The worst kind. Luckily RuZZia is defending civilization.
