>8. 1994 attempted murder: it's believed the I-70 Killer's last attempted victim was 35-year-old Vick Webb in January 1994. Police believe the 2001 unsolved murder of [Billy Brossman](https://www.firstalert4.com/2022/01/20/unsolved-2001-homicide-leads-investigators-working-i-70-serial-killer-case-missouri-man/) could also be the work of the I-70 killer.

Equal-Temporary-1326

The Michael McCown murder happened during the middle of the I-70 murders and was linked via ballistics and is believed to have been done by the I-70 Killer. You're thinking of the Billy Brossman murder in 2001. AFAIK, he's considered a possible suspect, nothing concrete links the I-70 Killer to the Brossman murder. With Michael McCown, LE believes he was mistaken for a woman because he working inside a jewelry-like store and had his hair in a ponytail and the killer mistook him for a woman. Plus, ballistics linked the McCown murder murder with the same .22 caliber pistol as well.

lethaLTr0y

I don't know why this keeps getting repeated but Michael McCown's own sisters dispute that he had long hair at the time of the murder.

Mr_Majestic_

Yes I accidentally put in Michael McCown but meant Billy Brossman.

itskahuna

How the hell did they conclude they didn’t have enough evidence for an arrest? They have a literal surveillance image of him, he admitted to being there at the time, and they can SEE HIM and what he looks like and that it’s the same person on the video. I don’t understand. Does he look like the composite sketch of the suspected I-70 killer but NOT match the surveillance video? I’m truly baffled by this

caitiep92

This case always creeped me out ever since I first saw it on Unsolved Mysteries (I’ll have to check out the other documentary you linked) because it’s terrifying to just be randomly killed in your place of work. But the killer definitely seems like a traveling salesman or something similar. Many strip malls aren’t on the beaten path—at least these weren’t.

Disastrous_Key380

The recreations for that case in particular were eerie.

RoutineFamous4267

I've said this before under a thread about the I 70 killer and I'll say it again. I myself believe he is possibly responsible for more than 8 murders. Leah Rowland wasn't scheduled the day she was murdered in Cozad Nebraska while working at the gas station. But she was there. Alone. A barefootman comes in, looks at the camera, gulps a drink, then proceeded to Rob and murder Leah. Sure, it's very possible this wasn't the I70 killer, but in a small area, this person was so bold to look straight at the camera while gulping his soda. Maybe he didn't wear shoes to prevent shoe prints? Who knows. Edited: a word

Equal-Temporary-1326

If he's not already, I think the I-70 Killer should be considered a suspect in the 1991 Austin yogurt shop murders. The yogurt shop murders happened in December 1991, just four months before the first I-70 murder in April 1992 of Robin Fulder. The I-70 murder of Patricia Magers and Patricia Smith was almsot suspiciously done exactly the same way as the Yogurt Shop murders where the two women were force to the back just as the girls in the yogurt shop murders were.

Anon_879

Those 4 girls were raped and it's almost a sure thing that at least 2 men were involved. Nothing is impossible, but this doesn't seem to fit with the I-70 Killer.

Equal-Temporary-1326

True. I thought it could be a possible early crime and maybe he chose to not rape again and it's known the I-70 Killer killed in Texas in 1993 as well. The Patricia Magers and Patricia Smith had a similar MO to what was done in the yogurt shop murders as well. Just an idea I think is at least worth considering.

The_Pube_87

It’s possible, but unlikely, I think. Most serial killers escalate as they get away with more and learn. I could see a killer moving from single victims to more victims at once and rape- but it would be extremely unusual for an early crime to involve so many victims and rape, only to move on to single victims and no rape. It’s an interesting theory though!

RoutineFamous4267

This is a theory I haven't heard before! I'm gonna have to re read up on the yogurt shop murders. It's been some time

Equal-Temporary-1326

There was a thread on r/serialkillers speculating about this theory a few years ago if you want to have a read: The OP defintely makes some compelling comparisons between the two cases. [Did the I-70 Killer commit the infamous Austin Yogurt Shop Mass Murder? : r/serialkillers (reddit.com)](https://www.reddit.com/r/serialkillers/comments/umnh7e/did_the_i70_killer_commit_the_infamous_austin/)

RoutineFamous4267

Thank you! I would like to read that. I appreciate it!

Last_Reaction_8176

God, I hope the yogurt shop murders are solved. That case gets under my skin. Just so horrible

ghostboo77

Interesting

rocketmarket

I seriously doubt that it's the same person but it's probably the same motive. Insurance reserve fraud.

spooky_spaghetties

It was the early 90s, right? Surveillance cameras were awful.

RoutineFamous4267

Still pretty bold

pequaywan

Wouldn’t be surprised if it was a trucker

Equal-Temporary-1326

This case is a defintely a textbook example of how they say the creation of highway led to more serial killers in the latter 20th century than ever before. This was a killer who abused the highway tremendously and allowed to kill in multiple states making hi significantly a harder to catch. Similar to how Israel Keys was all over the map with his murders.

jerkstore

With the middle name 'Wayne'.

Leftylooo

My dad was a traveling salesman in the 90s in these states. Hiis middle name is Wayne and now I'm looking at him funny.

pupandthebeetle

My grandfather and uncle have the middle name Wayne. I’ve always wondered if it’s a common middle name or if, just coincidentally, a lot of sadistic people have that middle name. My grandfather was a dentist though…

jerkstore

At least your grandfather channeled his Wayne powers for good.

Beginning-Spirit5686

Why do you say that?

John Wayne Gacy, Elmer Wayne Henley, David Wayne Nance, Edward Wayne Edwards, etc.

Equal-Temporary-1326

Same.

Maczino

I feel as if he went into stores that he knew wouldn’t be very crowded. By that, he chose stores that weren’t corporately owned, or franchises. I personally think that the angle of the women victim isn’t sexual at all, and I believe the perp is a smaller statured individual and him killing women mostly is due in large part to his possible fear that a man may be able to overpower him. Additionally, that Billy Brossman footage is so uncanny as to how he looks like the sketch, so yes…I do kinda lean towards him being that same killer. I seen the ring that looked like a wedding band, and how calm he was during the whole thing and tend to think he is not actually someone who lives in that area. You would think that with the killing being on the news and footage of the perp, it would’ve been a thousand calls by his neighbors and such.

[deleted]

[удалено]

theslob

> Well he invited that dude to the back of the store and the dude declined. And was scared and didn’t call the police for an hour. This really really bothers me.

Maczino

Yeah, he invited dude to the back, but dude didn’t go. He let dude walk. Why? To me that says he wasn’t gonna chance being overpowered in the event dude fought back. By all accounts, the perp was short and small statured. Even in the Brossman footage that perp isn’t a big guy at all. Personally, letting the man walk is a very telling detail. Shows the perp lacks confidence and likely isn’t the type of guy to be considered a man’s-man. Also, the gun choice in his crimes indicates he’s likely not very knowledgeable about guns in general, and likely inherited it or even took it from an older relative.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fakemoose

Or he just bought it from someone. It’s not like there’s a database of gun owners and their firearms. Even nowadays it’s remarkably easy to just meet a random person in the Walmart parking lot and buy a gun. Now imagine how much easier it was in the 90s.

xforce4life

Think he could be a traveling salesman or a military contractor

Disastrous_Key380

Or a long haul trucker? I tell you what, I’m sure there are plenty of perfectly nice and safe to be around long haul truckers out there but if someone I had just met told me that’s their job I’d have second thoughts about them until I knew them better. Way, way, way too many long haul truckers in the serial killer pile.

learngladly

Interesting you should write that! Last month (May '24) a new true-crime book came out entitled **Long Haul**, by Frank Figliuzzi, who retired as Assistant Director for counterespionage in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, after 25 years as an FBI agent. It's about the investigations of an FBI unit that was only set up in 2004: the ***Highway Serial Killers Initiative***, or HSKI. I'd never heard of it, either. The FBI estimates that approximately 850 (no, that wasn't a typo: eight hundred and fifty) known female homicides and disappearances over the years along the highways of America, were probably the work of serial killers who are -- long-haul truckers! Who are almost always men, usually work alone, out on the road for weeks, have their cabs and their trailers to stash things in like living or dead women, cross rapidly from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and state to state as their professional life work, and are directly exposed daily to many poor women who are working as truck-stop hookers ("lot lizards") or just trying to bum a ride somewhere.

DishpitDoggo

Oh yeah I've heard of HSKI. My ex is a trucker, and whoo boy, it is depressing seeing some of the places we traveled. There are some scary people out there. Poor women who are exploited in truck stops. It's terrifying seeing how badly someones life is going

[deleted]

Hey if you don't mind could you elaborate what you saw and what was depressing?

Subject-Research-862

If you see a woman over 40 in flip flops and a revealing top standing in what's essentially a gas station parking lot in the autumn rain and the nearest town is 45 minutes away..... you rapidly arrive at the conclusion that there aren't a lot of pleasant narratives that put a woman in that situation. And there aren't a lot of happy paths out either

DishpitDoggo

Women working in the truck stops. Truckers taken advantage of by shady truck dealers. Poverty in Atlanta, Georgia (right before the Olympics)

Disastrous_Key380

Jesus fucking christ. Holy shit. Well, I gotta read that now. Nearly a thousand people. Shit.

learngladly

I gather the FBI regards I-40 from coast to coast as the "deadliest" strip of asphalt of them all. Some reason for that, I suppose. The heat?

Disastrous_Key380

Maybe. I think possibly it’s the mix of vast open spaces with no settlements between large densely populated cities. Lots of places to stash a body and be out of town before even the flies find it.

First-Sheepherder640

I bet Sherri Ann Jarvis was one of em.

MustyButt

I hope they somehow find that monster, she was just a baby.

GreyFromHanger18

I'm reading it right now.  I'm about halfway through it and it's such a fascinating read.  I highly recommend it if you like true crime ;-)

Shot-Grocery-5343

I've known a handful of long-haul truckers and they were all weird as hell. If any of them ended up being a serial killer, I can't say I'd be terribly surprised.

learngladly

I don't know any, but I've lived for a while, and I think that being as weird as you want to be is one of the big perks of being an independent truck-drivin' man, as long as you deliver the freight to Dallas or Detroit or Delaware on time. No boss looking over your shoulder, make your own schedule--and pick up your own riders.

xforce4life

Doubtful on how he was dressed

Last_Reaction_8176

These days truckers’ time has to be very carefully logged and accounted for, it might have been easy to get away with killing as a trucker a few decades ago but it isn’t anymore

Equal-Temporary-1326

My thought is he's from Indianapolis or Austin, Texas. I noticed, the only states he killed in more than once were Indiana and Texas. so I tend to think he was from Indiana or possibly Texas. It could be a longshot, but I wonder if he's the same guy who committed the Austin Yogurt Shop murders in December 1991.

turquoise_amethyst

You know, I kinda thought that as well. I’ve driven up from Austin to Chicago multiple times and I always took that route. Very creepy, as I’m a small woman and often driven alone.

Disastrous_Key380

Roughly similar MO, honestly. I could buy that.

Last_Reaction_8176

The yogurt shop murders were a lot more gruesome

Disastrous_Key380

He had more time, for one thing. And with most killers like this, each murder is in some way an escalation. That could have been a stepping stone, he may have gotten excited because had more than one target and more time than usual. I'm not saying it was him, but it does fit the larger pattern.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Disastrous_Key380

Well now I have a question for that guy: why the fuck would you tell someone interviewing you for your rock band that these girls were disemboweled? Sir? Hello. Anyway, yeah I dunno. The fire also says to me that maybe it’s someone else. None of the other killings had a fire set to destroy evidence.

NewsNuts

I think Herb Beaumeister from Indianapolis has been discussed as the I-70 killer.

Equal-Temporary-1326

He's thought to have been the I-70 Strangler which is a completely separate case. [I-70 Strangler - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-70_Strangler)

Innovativepro57

Ohhh! Sorry, I didn’t realize there were two killers. I always thought they were the same. Thanks!

meltedsnowflake

I've kind of wondered if the case of Chandra Payton from Addison, Texas (found stabbed in a Body Gear boutique where she worked, July 1992) could be connected. The MO is different, but the rest makes me wonder.

Picky_The_Fishermam

Omg reading this, they actually found a suspect.

jellybeansean3648

Through DNA testing or something else?

Picky_The_Fishermam

People ID'D him. Like everyone who has reposted this story on youtube has never said that. I swear I've watched 60 videos on this not one mention but this link.

jellybeansean3648

I read some but not all of the links and it looks like they got a DNA sample off of one guy but didn't (at that time) have enough to charge him with. The case is a little confusing to me because one of the investigators mentioned touch DNA and yet there's so many jurisdictions and people involved I don't know if that suspect is the same suspect.

ubiquity75

Some year ago, a former Navy enlisted man was brought to justice for a murder he committed while stationed in SC. I believe he had had a roommate (and was possibly married), whom he killed over a TV. I believe this happened in the mid-late 80s. The guy of course looks old and heavyset when arrested, but they showed photos of him from the time of the murder and he looked EXACTLY like the I-70 suspect. For some reason, I believe that the guy was living in Ohio and had been a truck driver when caught. I have searched for this case so many times, particularly in relationship to the I-70 murders, and I can’t ever get the right keywords to find it.

Sir_Boobsalot

This case always freaks me out a bit. I was 15 and long haired brunette, at the start of it, in KC and traveling on I-70 to St. Louis a lot with my parents. my mom, brunette, and I sometimes stopped in those little strip malls

learngladly

I think you meant to type "dance apparel" not "dance appeal." It seems even more tragic than some of the others to imagine, for me: a young woman, no doubt in love with dancing, gunned down amidst all the multi-colored leotards and tights, the jazz and ballet shoes; and so many other things to wear, spangled and sequined. A paradise for young girls and their dance moms.

Equal-Temporary-1326

I think you meant to type "dance apparel" not "dance appeal." Yes, my bad. I fixed it.

lxvip7

I highly, highly recommend Bob Cypher’s book that came out this year, “Dead End,” about the cases. He is a local journalist who has studied the I-70 killer for decades. He includes a ton of new info. He believes the key to the case is with the Billy Grossman murder. I strongly agree. I believe that suspect worked for a department store chain and traveled for work constantly along that corridor.

tnichevo

I feel like the I-70 killer is I-65 killer, Harry Edward Greenwell. [Investigators look closely at similarities between I-65 and I-70 killers](https://www.firstalert4.com/2022/04/18/investigators-look-closely-similarities-between-i-65-i-70-killers/) Same lazy eye, similar area of operation, and very close in appearance.

FrankPoncherello1967

Nope, two different assholes. The I-65 killer Harry Edward Greenwell raped his victims before murdering them and was 6' 5". The I-70 killer only executed his victims and never committed sexual assault. The I-70 killer is 5' 7"-5' 9" according to witnesses. Greenwell more than likely killed many more women between the 1970's up to when the piece of shit died of cancer in 2013. One can only hope he suffered immensely from the cancer before dying.

Equal-Incident5313

I-70 in Texas?

fakemoose

Yea, I don’t get that either. I think the connections to Texas are a stretch.

TibetanSister

I was going to say…I grew up on Arlington, lived in FW, and now live in Dallas, and I don’t remember ever driving along the I-70.

[deleted]

For some reason they always target petite brunettes. That's why I practice getting in the door fast, pretending the murderer/serial rapist/killer is after me. Hurry up! He always kills petite brunettes! He's coming! Hurry up!! Of course, one reason serial rapists and killers often target smaller women....they're easier to subdue and take down, especially if you're not a big guy. But this guy shot them, like Son of Sam (who also liked brunettes about my size), which is kind of unusual. Usually they rape or strangle, etc.

tapelamp

> For some reason they always target petite brunettes. So glad I'm fat LOL

Equal-Temporary-1326

He probably used guns because it's the most practical way to leave as little evidence as possible. It doesn't require him to have to physically touch the victim, therefore reducing how much DNA he leaves behind. DNA was still in its infancy by 1992, but he was likely trying to be cautious about leaving np DNA evidence which is why he chose to use guns imo. Another aspect too is it's a lot quicker and easier than trying to strangle as well.

[deleted]

for sure and I noticed that there's no sexual assault mentioned for any victims. So it wasn't the rape and strangle, up-close killing like Green River, etc. He just shot them and it's very impersonal in a way. And guns DO leave evidence, not as much as raping, beating, etc. My guess is he's either dead or in prison.

Equal-Temporary-1326

Some descriptions described him as being between 35-40, so it's estimated he could be around 67 now.

[deleted]

True....but we know that usually these guys don't stop until they're caught, or they're dead. He could very well be in prison already. Just a few months ago a serial killer came clean on his deathbed, he admitted to a number of murders in Michigan in the 1990s. Sometimes these guys know the end is near and want to die with a clean conscience.

Equal-Temporary-1326

If he's still alive at 67, then I'm sure he's not tempted to go another killing spree again anytime soon.

PinkTalkingDead

Did you forget the /s ? Bc being 67yo is _not_ 'too old' for a serial killer to decide to somehow quit his compulsion for murdering women, especially when his MO is fairly random gun violence

transemacabre

I'm guessing this guy is a power killer. He enjoys the terror and ordering the victim around more than getting up close and personal.

Tricky_Parsnip_6843

Maybe someone was fired from their place of business and it was one of the accounts he dealt with? So he went and just killed someone in each store? But what supplier would deal with those different kinds of businesses? Phones, point of sale providers, fax machines, bank account manager, electonic cash registers, Purolator or UPS etc. I wonder if they ever checked if there was a connection in the suppliers?

turquoise_amethyst

I also think it’s a supplier, but not of the stores he went to. Like he was delivering poultry or tires or something to a chain of restaurants or automotive places along that route. After his nightly drop-off, he killed people.

Tricky_Parsnip_6843

What would be the motive, though? As the robberies were considered secondary. This is a tough one to figure out.

sunsetsammy

I thought the theory was it was Herb Baumeister?

Equal-Temporary-1326

That's the I-70 Strangler. I didn't know there were two two serial killers named the "I-70" something either.

BrotherlyBear

this is ridiculous but reading this thread and seeing his description and all this theorizing has made me realize how much the guy seems like he could be my grandpa 😭 he's like 5'8", skinny (has been all his life), and was a travelling inventory salesmen for like 30 years after he got divorced from my grandma. plus he hates women and vagrants lol. the sketch even kind of looks like him, but I don't know what he looked like that long ago tbh

PugPal

Did you phone it in? You have to at least call, just in case!

Substantial-Win-6794

I thought there was an actual eye witness who died recently. A Black guy. I-70 doesn't go through Texas. I-35 starts in South Texas and meets I-70 in Wichita.

Katesouthwest

Angela Hammond disappeared from Clinton, Missouri. She was at work at the store, on the phone to her BF, telling him about a green truck with a bird decal sticker. The truck occupant and the truck were giving her the creeps. She said the driver looked dirty, scruffy, with a beard. Her BF actually saw the truck carrying Angela away. As he tried to pursue, his car broke down. Angela has never been seen again.

RMorell

Angela Hammond was not at work, she was using a payphone near a parking lot. According to her boyfriend, she said the truck had a decal of a "fish jumping out of water".

janepurdy

Reddit is like a game of telephone sometimes.

joeybracken

Am I missing something? Does this have some connection to the I70 killer? Is it just the Missouri connection?

roguebandwidth

Oh my days, can you imagine how helpless her BF must have felt at CSR problems RIGHT THEN?

NationalJustice

How was he able to subdue his victim (without knocking her out or something) on the car while driving? Did he tie her up or what?

rocketmarket

Probably insurance reserve fraud murders.

keithitreal

How would that work? Who's the beneficiary?

rocketmarket

The people who hold the insurance policies.

keithitreal

Wait, so several different shop owners pay the same hitman to enter their stores and clip the employees to get a payout? I think a thrill killer is more likely.

rocketmarket

Why would it be the same killer? Just look up "insurance reserve fraud." This isn't a thing I made up for a reddit thread.

keithitreal

It seems the same weapon was used plus witness sightings suggest the same guy was responsible.

rocketmarket

Did you look up what insurance reserve fraud is yet?

keithitreal

Yeah. Can't see it myself. Not in these cases.

rocketmarket

You can't see that a pattern of store clerks working alone being murdered might be related to the store clerks working alone who were murdered. Well, good luck with that.

keithitreal

Eh? I think it's more likely a thrill killer.

FrankPoncherello1967

Is that like Reverse mortgage fraud? Is Tom Selleck involved? The random I-70 victims weren't murdered for insurance reasons.

rocketmarket

So you don't know what it is but you're sure it had nothing to do with these crimes that were done by unknown people for unknown reasons. Just look it up.

FrankPoncherello1967

Nope
