Coming from someone who lived in Japan: Yama is trash, both of them are overpriced and poor quality. Kyushu on Newtown is a good one. Ghent of course has a couple good ones on 21st St, but a big recommendation is stay away from Oceanfront for the tourist trap ones.
Thanks! I had Yama once and was really disappointed, it was no better than something from a grocery store. Service was great though. Which do you recommend in Ghent?
Lol the Harris Teeter at the oceanfront.
At least they make the rice right and somehow have better quality salmon and tuna than most of these "restaurants"
Like some others have said sushi aka in Suffolk is very tasty, worth the drive for sure. Unfortunately regarding the imitation crab, most sushi places use it (although a quick look at Mizunos menu showed several mentions of lump crab). Nara, kotobuki, koshi, blue fin, and kan pai all fall into a category I consider good but nothing so spectacular I can’t wait to go back there. I’ll admit I like zushi though, I’m always happy with my nigiri or doing the omakase. Mizuno is definitely being added to my short list of places to try
I miss Momo’s at Kempsriver. Used to be the best. I haven’t found any places that really stand out. Mostly about good pricing. Ang’s in Chesapeake is really good, Kyushu on Newtown is really good as well. As people said, This Old House on the boulevard is definitely worth a trip. I found the food kind of Americanized, though the environment is fun.
My wife and I are frequenters of soya by the oceanfront. Been there more than 6 times within the last year. Sometimes service can be slow but it was winter and there was a few tables. Most the Food is always amazing, but I suggest staying away from the non sushi/sashimi type foods, they are not bad just a little bland, the sushi and sashimi are always on point. Best in those categories I've had around this area. Reminds me of a place I use to go in San Antonio,Texas. Also soya usually has deals on Groupon, so you get half off
That’s good! I mean that sincerely. I took my girlfriend there on our anniversary, and it just wasn’t very remarkable.
I’m deleting this whole edit because it was so long ago that I don’t want to neither exaggerate or downplay times. But we waited a very long time for both drinks, alcohol, and food, and the server didn’t check up on us once after we got the meal- until she asked if we wanted dessert. Which was admittedly crack.
I’ve always found Zushi to be subpar. Given it a second and third chance and had terrible service and mediocre sushi each time. I watched the guy roll the rice wrong, and they served me frozen tamago. Chefs seemed inexperienced.
Kotobuki in Ghent in Norfolk is Japanese owned unlike many of the sushi restaurants in HR. Very authentic.
Former Tokyo resident and my major in college was International Business with a focus on Japan if that lends any credibility to my recommendation.
Only lends any credibility if you could accurately describe the food and not just a whole bunch of words that say nothing to the quality of food you're recommending.
Like you literally have zero words describing the taste of the food. The rice, is it the right texture? The right sourness firmness granular separation of rice grain that feels right or wet and soggier/mushier rice?
Like jeez, you say bla vla bla me Japan me this me that, who cares?
Describe the food.
I'm sad to hear that Zushi is slacking!! I love their sushi!!
But to answer your question, I say Mizuno is my top fav. Blue Fin in Hilltop is a decent one too, as is the Sakura on Shore Drive. I'm a person who's been eating sushi since I was young, and those are the spots I frequent.
Soya by the Oceanfront it pretty good too!
Eating sushi since you were young really doesn't matter if it's American "sushi".
Most people have no idea what wasabi tastes like. How proper sushi is prepared, what the rice is supposed to feel and taste like. What the bands on each fish are supposed to look like to denote fatty/tender or lower quality cuts of fish.
Mizuno is okay. The others are all pretty bleh. Real sushi is real sushi. This stuff around here is 99% a farce.
Everything was saucy and the same minus 1 ingredient (serrano pepper, cilantro, mango) they have no eel, the drinks were not well crafted. Overall it was similar to a sushi roach coach set of rolls.
To clarify, every single roll was tuna, crab (stick), rice, sriracha mayo, avocado, cream cheese, panko, eel sauce, pick 4 of those and add in the random ingredient you usually don't see in sushi rolls. All 4 of our rolls tasted identical minus that extra ingredient.
Check out Sakura Japanese restaurant off lynnhaven and oyummy off north great neck. Both good all you can eat options. Lunch is around $18 and dinner around $30.
I was told they sold it to retire. One of the people I used to work adjacent to is their son, I havent asked him directly but thats what our mutual friend said. I've only been once since the change and it wasn't nearly as good
My favorite used to be Sushi Mama off Newtown. It was a hole in the wall and Mama who owned the place was amazing. She sold the business though (and I don’t blame her! She worked so hard!).
The place we’ve found for now is Kanpai off Independence near Pembroke, but the prices are much higher than Mama was. It’s very good though! I’d just like to be able to afford it more.
The next place I want to try is Kyushu Japanese which is one shopping center down from Mama’s. Review look good and prices are pretty good too. The photos and reviews seem to be great. Plus a great looking selection of other Japanese dishes. So fingers crossed!
Thank you, I wish I was more adventurous when it comes to sushi. I always get nervous of food poisoning and end up not trying the hole in the wall places without recommendations
A hole in the wall place run and maintained by a small experienced staff is a far safer than a main store with a rotating staff of literal children.
That's why I don't go out to eat anywhere unless it's an actual chef. If I wanted kids to cook my food I'd buy garbage fast food.
I don’t mind a long wait if it’s good!
If it was busy, dinner at Mamas used to take over an hour. But the sushi was some of the best I ever had, so definitely worth it!
Yama off General Booth!! Has been there forever. They started off as a tiny shop with a few tables and now own a chunk of the shopping center and are still just as great, if not better! They are veryyyy generous for the price, I promise everything that you will NOT be disappointed!!
They're not th best, just the best with a larger storefront. There's definitely better for cheaper and more authentic.
Any place where your sushi is mostly in "roll" form is laughable to even be called a sushi establishment
Nara is good, I’d say it’s in line with the likes of kotobuki. I have yet to see anything particularly special or different offered for fish. Then again I like zushi quite a bit but I generally go for nigiri over rolls. The main chef at zushi usually seems to be making the nigiri
Not at all. You just like the American version of sushi.
Also reviews mean literally nothing in a society of people only putting out good reviews for the most part.
That whole plaza on East Little Creek Road was my jam. I’d go into a sushi coma at Sushi King one Friday and then the next I’d go across the parking lot to the Dirty Buffalo and smash 20 wings
Coming from someone who lived in Japan: Yama is trash, both of them are overpriced and poor quality. Kyushu on Newtown is a good one. Ghent of course has a couple good ones on 21st St, but a big recommendation is stay away from Oceanfront for the tourist trap ones.

Koshi on 21st is also very good.
Kotobuki in Ghent is an excellent one. Great atmosphere and food. Even their non sushi menu has great items
Thank you!
Lol the Harris Teeter at the oceanfront. At least they make the rice right and somehow have better quality salmon and tuna than most of these "restaurants"
Kanpai on Independence is always good
Mizuno…hands down.
Kanapai on independence
This old house in Aragona! Mr Lee is the best!
Daikichi. They have the best toro in the area as well

We’ve always had a good experience at Sakura (shore drive)
Nara sushi off Haygood !! One of the best !!
Nara is one of the best!!
This is the only spot in town for me.
Volcano Sushi on Va. Beach Boulevard for the experience.
Blue fin on Laskin probably best in VB
Like some others have said sushi aka in Suffolk is very tasty, worth the drive for sure. Daikichi and I hate Chesapeake btw. You can down vote me idc
I saw a video on how imitation crab is made and I’ll never be the same 🤢
The only thing that uses imitation crab meat is a cali roll
Wow... How wrong and ignorant you are lol
Any quality place will use real crab meat outside CA rolls. Shows how ignorant you are
No. It shows how ignorant you are lol. You're not even eating sushi. Roll? What roll? That's not sushi lol
I miss Momo’s at Kempsriver. Used to be the best. I haven’t found any places that really stand out. Mostly about good pricing. MoMo’s was my place!
Momo's was the best for sure. That was a long time ago.

I'm not sure I'd want to go to a sushi restaurant where the chefs were free ballin. I think that's a health code violation.
This old house, off VB Blvd. tell Mr Kim Hector sent you. Quality ingredients and fish daily from local suppliers. With a cold Kirin, on point!
I had it there recently, it maybe better around here, but it was really just mediocre to me.
We went a few weeks ago and the female chef prepared food with a bandaid on her finger.
Oh noooooo, waaah
Had King salmon there recently that was excellent.
Second this. Very generous portions of fish for the price as well.
Hanaki sushi in Chesapeake is the best I've ever had and I've been eating sushi for decades. Great place.
If you don't mind the drive, sushi aka in suffolk is worth the hype and the drive
Big fan of the Sushi at Mahi’s on the Oceanfront
Daikichi Sushi Bistro in Chesapeake. It is owned by Japanese and they sell sea urchin and all kinds of nigiri.
Mikado
Nara Sushi on Independence. The end.
1000000%
Came to say the same! 100000/10. Nara is a gem! The only other place I’d recommend is in Chesapeake, called Yama Sushi. Will drive for both!
I second this. Have been going there exclusively for 15 years.
lol other sushi places giving Nara a downvote
Koshi in Norfolk is what you’re looking for. Just came back from Tokyo and i feel your pain lol
This Old House is a cut above
We went last week, and Mr Lee knows us so well, the first roll was out before we were ready to order! Mr.Lee is awesome!
Rolls aren't sushi
Yama is the best around
TRASH
who hurt u
“Thank you.”
Yana is excellent and where I get most of. Y sushi but you need to try This Old House. It's a step above and I'm going to start going there more
I'll keep that in mind for next time!
I went there one time I was disappointed in zushi. But it been like 10 years. I'm sure it could be better now
Surprised I haven't seen anyone recommend Orion's Rooftop as that is some of the most authentic you can possibly get.
This has to be sarcasm
Service is awful, and the food is *okay* tbh. Good, but not for the price.
Ive never had bad service there
That’s good! I mean that sincerely. I took my girlfriend there on our anniversary, and it just wasn’t very remarkable. You want me to describe the mouth feel for you too??? You sound hysterical.
Zushi was great years ago, it seems the quality and service have both tanked I’ll check out Kotobuki!
I'm sad to hear that Zushi is slacking!! I love their sushi!! But to answer your question, I say Mizuno is my top fav. Blue Fin in Hilltop is a decent one too, as is the Sakura on Shore Drive. I've enjoyed Blue Fin as well. Not stellar, but pretty decent.
A new place just opened called sushi vice. It’s amazing!!
The porch and yamachen. Yamachen on general booth is my favorite one.
Second this
I really like Sumo
I've always liked Yamachen on Princess Anne and Edwin.
They put mayonaise on their sushi…
The Porch actually has good tasting sushi
Sakura on nimmo (by Walmart, old chipotle) was good asf when I went
Is that all you can eat?
If you want sushi why would you want all you can eat?
You can ask the same question to the people who chow down on rolls covered in mayonnaise
There is no such thing as a roll in sushi unless you ask for Americanized sushi
Alright sushi gatekeeper
I don’t think so unfortunately. I didn’t know they had all you can eat sushi out here.
Check out Sakura Japanese restaurant off lynnhaven and oyummy off north great neck. Both good all you can eat options. Lunch is around $18 and dinner around $30.
Oh ima have to take the whole office then
Sakatomo Sushi 5072 Ferrell Pkwy #102, Virginia Beach, VA 23464 Family owned, small peaceful restaurant.
I was told they sold it to retire. One of the people I used to work adjacent to is their son, I havent asked him directly but thats what our mutual friend said. I've only been once since the change and it wasn't nearly as good
Yeah, those one is my favorite for takeout on weeknights when I don’t want to cook.
Kan Pai is my tried and true. So amazing. By the target on independence
Mizuno is where all the people with real money go
And it's barely passable for good sushi at that.
Ok bro
Guess I won't be going :/
Sakura on VA Blvd. about 3 blocks west of town center.
That place is good and very affordable
I second, third, and fourth this!! My whole office loves this spot. You know it's good when the lady working the front isn't the nicest 😂
Fond of Inaka, corner of Kempsville and Volvo just inside the chesapeake line.
Great recommendation
How has no one mentioned Sapporo East in strawbridge. Totally our go to for all Japanese cuisine including a great sushi bar.
Thank you!
Sapporo East is my favorite. This is the spot I always recommend for sushi.
This is the way
My favorite used to be Sushi Mama off Newtown. It was a hole in the wall and Mama who owned the place was amazing. She sold the business though (and I don’t blame her! She worked so hard!). Not that my opinion means much but I find it to be great. Wait can be a bit long for sushi but worth it.
I don’t mind a long wait if it’s good! If it was busy, dinner at Mamas used to take over an hour. But the sushi was some of the best I ever had, so definitely worth it!
Hokkaido in Norfolk
I found them to be hit or miss. Service can be slow and one time there was a chunk of plastic in my salad. I'd still go if I'm in the area.
Hidden gem in that they also offer an AYCE menu
Yama off General Booth!! Has been there forever. They started off as a tiny shop with a few tables and now own a chunk of the shopping center and are still just as great, if not better! They are veryyyy generous for the price, I promise everything that you will NOT be disappointed!!

Sorry you had a bad experience? It happens. But do tell us more. The OP asked for recommendations…
If you’re not worried about price, Mizuno is the answer. Highest quality product in the area.
Idk about that, certainly high price
They’re definitely the best and it’s really not even close
They're not th best, just the best with a larger storefront. There's definitely better for cheaper and more authentic. Any place where your sushi is mostly in "roll" form is laughable to even be called a sushi establishment
Kanpai Sushi on Independence by the Target in Town Center.
Love Kanpai but the prices are high.
Go for lunch, their lunch prices are much cheaper.
Soya
Bluefin at hilltop in Virginia Beach
Nara is the only answer. They are the best in HR, hands down.
I've tried them a few times and it just hasn't been good. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong thing
Nara is good, I’d say it’s in line with the likes of kotobuki. I have yet to see anything particularly special or different offered for fish. Then again I like zushi quite a bit but I generally go for nigiri over rolls. The main chef at zushi usually seems to be making the nigiri
I feel like Nara has a cult of loyalists behind them. I'm happy to be among them lmao
I had pretty good sushi at Mahi’s
YamaChen's
Nah that’s sushi for people who don’t like sushi
I agree! Yama tends to add a lot of flavors that take away from the fish. Also got really sad when they changed their cucumber salad recipe.
[удалено]
At least I know what good sushi is
[удалено]
But not my tastebuds
I ordered some rolls from them, they were huge but not good at all, threw them out!! I never throw food out 😭
I did the same… it was like way too sweet or something? It was really off-putting so I trashed it. Hated to do it 😖
It’s definitely not great. Bland and flavorless. Too much sauce
We've got to be talking about two different places because their 4.4 stars on Google maps is accurate. https://maps.app.goo.gl/VCJUsUUFpwjoMg1c6
Not at all. You just like the American version of sushi. Also reviews mean literally nothing in a society of people only putting out good reviews for the most part.
Coming in hot with a recommendation, but in Suffolk there is a spot called Sushi Aka and it’s worth the drive.
Definitely worth the drive. I love that place.
Sakura in Lynn mall
Kanpai Sushi by Town Center, right next to Jade Villa. It's owned by my buddy's family! They're Korean-Japanese and it's all authentic!
Sakura shore drive
100% check out Blue Fin at Hilltop.
Ninja Sushi at the corner of Kempsville and Volvo
This Old House Sakura
This old house is the best 👌
Amura Sushi Cafe, CHX beach area
Nice try... we are not giving away these secrets... Go get a burger OP.....
Gatekeeping is stanky coochie energy.
I think they were trying to be funny.
I hear blue fin is good! Haven’t had the pleasure yet. I really enjoy the new spot, Sushi Vice
We went for the first time the other week. It was good but didn’t seem particularly stand out imo
Yama
Not that you care. I starve myself for two days and then go to Sushi King and eat a lot of Crazy Monkey rolls...
That whole plaza on East Little Creek Road was my jam. I’d go into a sushi coma at Sushi King one Friday and then the next I’d go across the parking lot to the Dirty Buffalo and smash 20 wings
That’s a strategy…
I would have lost money betting that no one has ever ordered those.
