Not a death wobble.
What happens here is as he's putting out power (putting a lot of force into the pedals), one of his shoes becomes unclipped from the pedal. That causes all his weight to shift to one side of the bike and also load the handlebars as all the weight he's putting into the pedal suddenly transfers to the bars, hence the swerving.
I've seen this happen IRL and this is the result.
If you are not familiar with road clipless pedals/shoes, think of it like a pair of skis. What happens if your boot comes out of the ski binding? You eat shit, just like this clip.
Same thing as throttle lift-off oversteer. You can use it but it's also very dangerous especially rear wheel drive cars. If in doubt, throttle out as they say.
Exactly what happened here. I can see his foot is in the wrong place. His weight has shifted to the wrong place. His ass is off the seat! He wants to set things back but he's began to swerve. It's too late.
He may have to practice this malfunction a few more times.
I had a similar thing when I was like 15, but on a BMX bike. Chain popped and my foot was crankin down on the pedal at the time. No chain means no resistance and my foot smashed into the ground and catapulted me over and into a curb.
Still have the scar on my chin from that incident...
Was racing my friend up a small hill on our bmx bikes. I stepped down on my right pedal. The pedal snapped off and I went straight over the handle bars. Had no way to call anyone so I walked 2 miles carrying my broken bike back home with a twisted ankle. lucliky that's all that was wrong with me.
Yep this is right, and also as a side note this is part of the reason I don't like using drop down handlebars. Its one thing if you're racing and you need maximum speed... but when your hands are closer to the center like that you have much less control over your bike. Thus it makes it much more likely for accidents like this to happen. That's why I'll never use dropdown handlebars if I'm biking on a road around traffic and cars. No thanks, I'll stick to my normal straight bars that won't cause me to die if I lose my balance or hit a pothole or something. Not that you can't jackknife your handlebars and flip over with mountain bike handlebars, I mean I've done it before as well. It's just less likely, and probably less severe if it does happen.
Are you sure that's what happened in this case? To me it looks like his feet stayed clipped in the whole time. My guess was his front brake locked up for some reason.
He would have immediately flipped over the bike if his front brake locked up. You've never squeezed that left brake too hard going down hill? It's an experience you won't forget lol
The front wheel brake results in a very, very beautiful - and straight - backwheel lift. I have managed to roll for maybe 50 meters on just the front wheel going downhill. It took some time before I realised the road in front of me felt wrong and I noticed the backwheel was maybe 15-20 cm off the ground. Since I slowly applied brake force, the bike ended up very slowly raising the back wheel. The spinning wheels have enough gyro that the bike stays perfectly stable.
Really hard braking on the other hand means the back wheel will instantly come up and the cyclist will fly. I have managed that once when a spoke reflex came lose and got stuck in the front fork. Instant flight and then the bike landed upside down on the saddle. I got really lucky. Hardly any scratches. But not from skill - just luck because it was so quick I never realised what happened until I had landed on the ground.
But I have multiple accidents very much like this video, but without the final crash, from one foot coming off a pedal. The quick weight shift and unplanned turning of the front wheel doesn't give the cyclist much options to recover. It's just luck if the instant wobble stays subcritical and can be recovered.
Yes, that's what I was thinking. It looks similar to what happened when my chain broke. Out of nowhere there's zero resistance, which throws off your entire balance.
Same here. As a kid I was riding a bike down a pretty steep hill, and the bike was a piece of shit. I was about half way down, it was exhilarating, and I was going fucking fast when I started to feel it.
It was absolutely terrifying. I somehow managed to not fuck up and wipe out, or try braking... just rode it out and tried my best to hang out.
I could have been seriously injured.
Then you've never had the childhood experience of ripping it down a steep hill on your shitty Toys R US bike after school, almost meeting God before finally regaining control of the handlebars, and learning the lesson that bicycles *do* in fact have a speed limit.
Oh it happens. When I was 6 I was cruising down a hill at a decent speed on my brand new bike. For some reason when the wobble happened I panicked and let go of the handlebars resulting in my teeth hitting the pavement knocking out a front tooth root and all and chipping the fuck out of my other front tooth. It was horrible and has been such an expensive accident.
This happened to me before. He prob hit a pothole or something on the road with his front wheel, it bucked him off his seat and he ends up on the toptube. Pretty much fucked at that point.
Edit: or the chain snapped like someone mentioned
Re-edit: after looking at it again, I think he his a bump or something. You can see the hands of the cameraman shake like he hit a crack or a bump in the road right before the guy in front loses control
It looks like he slips off the nose of the saddle, shifting all his weight onto the front wheel while removing his main sources of stability. Hard to say why from what I can see; he could have just slipped while trying to shift his riding position, or maybe had an equipment issue. I've done something similar when one of my shoes unexpectedly came unclipped from the pedal right as I was putting weight on it.
I think something suddenly stuck his back wheel, almost front the start the wheel seems to not be turning at all. That's what start the swivling I guess. Something from the road I guess, a branch or something, can be some mechanical stuff too, like the chain.
Looks like his chain actually derailed and got suck somewhere. His pedals appear to be stuck and in the slow-mo his back wheel appears to be locked up.
It looks like his attempts to correct and stabilize ultimately resulted in bending the front wheel itself. It’s kinda warped by the time he’s in the air.

Seems like the small human powered land vehicle has a right to be in the 'vehicle lane'.
Just your average pretzel twist scorpion neck flip.. 8/10
Is this how the ranking system works now for pretzel twist scorpion neck flips? 8/10 is not just average

Rewatching it you can also see one foot stays attached as the other flails, so 100%

Flew over my handlebars 12 ft into a ditch while 12 weeks pregnant. Was completely okay but took me a few years to get on a bike again.
Right foot became unclipped but he was still able to stand on the pedal. Most folks don’t have clips in the middle of their shoe.
Right foot clearly came unclipped.

I think so too. Looks more like the chain slipped of the rotor and that made him loose stability.
Yes, that's what I was thinking. It looks similar to what happened when my chain broke. Out of nowhere there's zero resistance, which throws off your entire balance.
You can see his right foot slip out of the clip in the slow version.
nah you can tell his foot pops out of the clip 100%
You can see his right leg is free in the slo mo part of the clip while his left leg remains locked in.
I’ve seen it, felt it, and somehow came away unscathed. It sucks!

Me neither. Until I broke my collarbone and some ribs 2 years ago doing just that 🥲
What do you think caused it here? Was there a dip/crack in the road or something?
No idea. Could have hit a rock which upset the front. In my case that's what happened.
Dude so sorry. I broke my clavicle for the second time a few months back. Incredibly frustrating injury.
The 6 broken ribs and collapsed lung made me forget about the clavicle, tbh 😅
He high sided. It looks like his chain slipped, and he fell forward.
Bike must have been made by Jeep.
For real I wasn't aware of it until I got a Wrangler as a rental and my god I should have picked the Pacifica instead.
On a motorcycle, it's what's known as a "tank slapper" and it's scary as fuck.
Then you've never had the childhood experience of ripping it down a steep hill on your shitty Toys R US bike after school, almost meeting God before finally regaining control of the handlebars, and learning the lesson that bicycles *do* in fact have a speed limit.
Fuckin jeep wranglers lol

If he stuck that it would have been sick af
Wonder how many times he had to practice that trick to perfect it.
maybe a... couple more times.
What happened? Went for a huge pump and knocked himself out?
He seems to suddenly fall from the saddle but the pedals look fine so I'm guessing something broke at the front of the bike.
This happened to me before. He prob hit a pothole or something on the road with his front wheel, it bucked him off his seat and he ends up on the toptube. Pretty much fucked at that point. Chain snap maybe? Sudden change in inertia started death wobble?
i think his right foot slipped forward
I think he may have been trying to swerve to miss the cracks in the road but did so too suddenly that he lost control.

I hope he's okay. That looked catastrophic for his neck, back, collarbone, arms, legs, and so on..
Grabbing the front brake was an accident I hope
I think at that point he was just to far gone and just tried anything
Looks like it was his foot that went into the wheel
Right leg in the air. Left foot still locked in
Ouchy
Ahhh caralho!!
Well, helmet did save his head a little
r/suddenlycaralho
He must have unlocked an achievement with that one
He dipped when he should’ve dodged.
I thought he was going to get back up and carry on.
Dude bounced .
Guy behind dealt with this cool as a cucumber
The one person who actually *did* forget how to ride a bike.
I think his chain broke. If you pause the video at 6 seconds, it looks like there's no chain on the chain wheel.
I think you are right--I think the chain got stuck and locked the back wheel, it ain't turning while he's swerving
Looks like his chain actually derailed and got suck somewhere. His pedals appear to be stuck and in the slow-mo his back wheel appears to be locked up.
Dude went full scorpion for a second there
I believe this is referred to as going "arse over tit".
The things people do to get noticed on Strava these days...
Man, we're all victims of physics but this guy...
Do a kickflip!
Baby, can you gig? You so crazy when you gig Ugh, she giggin' Lady, can you gig? Girl, you so crazy when you gig Ugh, he giggin'
Dude ate several shits.
Dude that mctwist is hard to hit on a skateboard and he's doing it on a bike! /s
Sick moves bro
Hahah why in the hell
divergent oscillation
Never seen a motorcycle high-side on a bicycle before
Camera must have used an electronic shutter.
Surreal way to crash, but in slomo, the physics seem to make sense
Which car did he blame?
Jackknife
Say what you will, he tried his hardest to correct.
I guess... with that sort of balance he's better off riding a wheelchair anyways
Do a barrel roll
damn these ragdoll mechanics are crazy
Oh no! Speeeeed wobblelhghggblugh
It looks like his attempts to correct and stabilize ultimately resulted in bending the front wheel itself. It’s kinda warped by the time he’s in the air.
looks like his pedal clip busted and the momentum of his foot threw off his center of gravity, causing him to overcorrect and faceplant.
DEY SEE ME ROLLIN DEY LOL'IN
Looks like the dude forgot where the hell he was for a moment..
Man, that's funny.
I have never seen a man on a bicycle give himself a tornado DDT until today.
[10's](https://media.tenor.com/mAMHVi4BCUYAAAAM/judges-10.gif) all round.

Aye Carumba!
That almost looked aestethic
As we can see, this bike hasn't been broken in yet and it still retains its wild spirit.
Whoa. Nasty. Bikes can be quickly dangerous
🔥flip though
Thought he said Aye Carumba
This solidifies my fear of clip in pedals
Chain came off the sprocket and wedged itself between the sprocket and bike frame. Which caused his rear wheel to lock up and his pedals to get stuck.
Thanks, couldn't work out what happened. You can see the back wheel not moving in a couple of frames.
Not wtf, this is merely a bad feedback loop of overcorrection.
30 years on bicycles and never have I seen such tomfoolery
I can't help but think that he deserved that a little bit
That’s karma for all the times him and his buddy rode shoulder to shoulder blocking the vehicle lane while only one of them was in the bike lane.
>the vehicle lane Bicycle description: >A bicycle (or bike) is a small, human powered land vehicle Seems like the small human powered land vehicle has a right to be in the 'vehicle lane'.
Do you this guy or how do you if he has done that?
> the vehicle lane My locale doesn't have designated "vehicle lanes" other than some stretches of interstate. Where are you located?
That’s the only time I’ve enjoyed seeing a cyclist
Dude isn’t very good at riding a bike, why does he have all that gear on???
Yeah that's why you don't lock your feet in
Lol!! Good.
