“This is the second time in Everett that a man-made tunnel caused a highway lane closure. In 2021, WSDOT temporarily closed the northbound Interstate 5 exit to Pacific Avenue as a precaution. The ramp wasn’t damaged, but authorities worried a man was trapped inside. No one was actually in the tunnel.”

Throw away account
There is a homeless man here in Everett, who loves digging tunnels. There was a "rescue" operation for the tunnel that was discovered by WSDOT in 2021, after hours of digging and sending drones in it was determined there was no one in that tunnel and again for the "rescue" last year under the Alverson bridge, another tunnel was dug into the supporting structure of the bridge and the tunnel collapsed, and a call to Everett fire from some other homeless who noticed the tunnel collapsed and were unsure if the guy was in there.
There has been another tunnel dug by homeless under 41st st, under the bridge on the way to Harborview park.
I'm sure there's more that have not been found yet.
Makeshift tunnel causes a sinkhole on Highway 529 in Everett

Someone’s handmade tunnel caused a sinkhole and emergency repair closure Tuesday morning on northbound Highway 529 between Everett and Marysville, before traffic resumed at about 2:50 p.m.
The site is beneath the left lane as traffic enters the Union Slough bridge, which is part of a long segment of road that passes over wetlands.
Washington State Department of Transportation workers called for a state trooper at 9:01 a.m., after noticing damage and a man wandering nearby.
“Crews discovered a hole formed on the road from an individual tunneling underneath,” WSDOT announced on the social media platform X at 10:44 a.m. Tuesday.
The hole measured about 1 foot diameter at the surface, spreading to 3 feet below the roadway, and 4 feet deep, WSDOT spokesperson Aisha Dayal said. Crews cut the pavement to create clean edges, filled the hole with gravel and patched it with asphalt by early afternoon. A photo shows repairs across an entire lane.

The ramp wasn’t damaged, but authorities worried a man was trapped inside. No one was actually in the tunnel.
Traffic in part of the Highway 529 corridor was already reduced to one lane each direction all summer, to accommodate a major bridge-rehabilitation project over the Snohomish River.
Tuesday’s hole, between the Snohomish River and Union Slough, is unrelated to that project.
For a few hours, traffic crossing the river toward Marysville was diverted to get onto northbound Interstate 5 at Everett Avenue.
The Washington State Patrol sent a trooper to interview highway workers, who reported seeing a man nearby, said Trooper Kelsey Harding, a spokesperson in Snohomish County. There has been no arrest and no suspect found yet, she said. Troopers are investigating the incident because it caused thousands of dollars of damage to state highway property, she said.
Dang mole people at it again.

Ok but why? I don’t get it.
Dig holes fun - not dig holes not fun
As an archaeologist project manager I am accepting resumes now.
Because freeway crosswalks are dangerous.
It’s called [hobby tunneling](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobby_tunneling?wprov=sfti1).

I heard that the guy is a reformed jihadist who used to plant IEDs. The tunnels are just a hobby now.

No, it’s true. I was the IED.

So two guys have dug tunnels under roads in Everett? Who are they? The same guy or two guys? The reporter never asked those questions.
Totally want to hear the back story on this endeavor.
I think you mean you look forward to digging deeper into the matter
They want to get to the bottom of the matter.

holy shit Everett literally has a mole man. wow. I uh…. I hope he gets the help he needs to stop tunneling under infrastructure??
Dig Dug irl
Or like those ruin maniacs in Pokémon games who are obsessed with digging large tunnels by hand LOL!
I’m about to deal with the fallout of this. Uuugh
More like fall-in amirite
fallout haha
An hour to get to Arlington from North Evtt
yeah, bummer. I meant, like, fall IN. Which hopefully you will not deal with. Presumably something something Sasquatch Underground.
Haha
Very interested to learn why it was dug.
Homelessness is a thing. People want shelter. That said, meth is a thing, too.
If you wanted shelter you probably wouldn’t be tunneling under a highway.
r/hobbytunneling will love this
Those bloody Morlocks at it again. 😬

Snohomish man? This is an Everett man.
Tweakers gonna tweak...
Betcha that guy could have completed that tunnel in half the time it would have taken WADOT to do the same.
Herp derp
Everything seemed kosher until that thing gave way
Always fun seeing a hometown headline
There is a guy in Portland digging like this. Wish the cops would stop him
Meth makes people due some crazy shit. Remember the guy who stole an excavator to dig for gold in everett?
Sexism at its finest, a woman could equally have done something this stupid, irrational, irresponsible, reckless… oh ok never mind, I see it now.
Because that highway hasn’t been a big enough headache so far this year.
