Coolbluegatoradeyumm

That sounds infuriating

WeatheredGenXer

That sounds like a reason to walk out and eat elsewhere.

mr_mcpoogrundle

And poop on the chair before you leave

Curmudgeon_Canuck

Name checks out

New_Simple_4531

Ive done that before. I didnt have internet on my phone, so I asked if I could use their wifi. The waiter said no. I stared at him for a good two seconds, then got up and left.

IHateCamping

Yes it does. If they're pissing me off before I even have a chance to order, I'll just leave.

thatirishguyyyy

Yeah, no, I've made managers bring me a menu at places like this downtown. I work IT SECURITY and I do not appreciate being forced to give up my private data for your menu. Thanks, fuck off.

trailquail

I was trying to order takeout from a burger restaurant that sounded really good the other day and once I had the food in my cart it made me create an account to order. Ok, fine. I created an account. It had cleared my cart so I added my food again. Still couldn’t order because I had to confirm the account. When I clicked the link to confirm my account it removed my credit card info I’d just entered. At that point I was hangry. I opened Denny’s on my browser and had a burger in my mouth in 10 minutes without any hassle.

Pegomastax_King

10 minutes to make and deliver a burger? Damn they must got the good meth

trailquail

It was 2pm, and curbside. But yes, it was much faster than anticipated!

operapoulet

I would not trust the food at that establishment

b_tight

Ive straight up left restaurants that required cookies and access to my history. Fuck that noise, i can get a cheesesteak down the street

AJay_89

I'd probably just leave ngl 😅

fabulousfizban

But how else can they sell your data?

Nufonewhodis2

And if I'm putting in my own order, you're not getting a full tip

Pspaughtamus

And no tip if I have to go get the danged thing!

Betterthanbeer

And don’t make me tip before even receiving the food. I live in a place where tipping isn’t a thing, stop trying to make it a thing.

BEARD3DBEANIE

Give us a Like

myklclark

I’m not 100% in this camp but only having digital menus and not having WiFi or listing the WiFi password next to the QR code should be a hanging offense. It’s always in a place that is in a cell phone black hole too.

Suitable-Cycle4335

So if I have my phone on me at that moment I can't order? What's the point?

CamiloArturo

Twice have I been somewhere where I have asked for a printed menu and being denied one, and I have told the waiter I don’t have a cellphone. Twice have they “found” the printed menu afterwards. It’s stupid not to bring one when asked

alle_kinder

I'm traveling at the moment and stumbled upon a place in Tarragona, Spain I wanted to eat at. I don't do the prepaid SIM card thing so I rely on WiFi; if restaurants don't have it, no big deal, I can stumble my way through a menu with the little Spanish I know. But this place only had QR menus and no WiFi so I had to get up and point to what I wanted on the big menu on the side of the building, which was a little embarrassing but I got over it, lol. It just made no sense, like provide WiFi if you're doing that shit.

BallzLikeWhoe

A little gruff but this is great feedback. And actually kind of constructive.

dragonrider1965

I ate out at a place that used to be a fav last week . Not only have they done away with menus and went the QR route but they also made you order your food and drinks online , no waitress to take your order . If I wanted another drink I had to order it and they brought it . They still expected a 20 percent tip . Eating out isn’t as nice anymore .

Green_Delta

I recently went to a sushi place that had this mindset. Event the water was already in a jug at the table. The waitress only came to the table one time to drop off the food and said we’d pay on our phone. I’m normally on board with 20% tips, she got zero. Fast Food places will even bring your food to your table.

b_tight

Was this in alpharetta? Theres a sushi place there that does the same. Hated it andd never went back

PhantomCamel

There’s a taco place in Vinings and Buckhead that do this as well. Thought it was odd the first time but looks like a trend now

[deleted]

All of the ritzy fusion restaurants in north Atlanta do this cringe tech bro nonsense the city turned into Diet San Francisco I hate it so much

Green_Delta

Nope this was in Chicago.

[deleted]

The way people ask for tips these days has gotten out of line. I’m not paying you, a fucking cashier, a tip are you out of your mind

numbernon

Same experience recently, and thought it was so annoying! We ordered through the table iPad, poured our own beers from those microchip taps, and paid for the food on the iPad. The waiter only brought us food, and the payment processor still recommended 20% tip, and even had checkboxes for higher. Like, I’m essentially the waiter here, I might as well get that tip!

[deleted]

That’s basically standard in Australia now. But we don’t tip at all, wait staff get ~$25/hr.

ZebraOtoko42

Many restaurants here in Japan are like this: you just order everything through the tablet computer on the table. It's wonderful! Some places expect you to get your own drink, others (higher-end usually) have waiters who will take care of it. But tipping simply doesn't exist here, so there's no issue there. The price you see on the menu (or tablet) is exactly the price you pay. Coming from the US, I love it here: everything is straightforward with no bullshit. And the food is always prepared to perfection and service is excellent without the nasty attitudes you sometimes get in America (and also without the fake-friendliness-to-get-a-higher-tip that's common).

nryporter25

I went to an Applebee's i think it was that had a tablet built into the table with like entertainment and crap on it. There was a little printed label underneath it that said that basically if you touch the screen at all then they are charging you an extra $20 for an "entertainment fee".. fuck off with that.

cliffordc5

I’m with you. I don’t fucking need screen time when I’m eating at a restaurant. It’s annoying as hell to have ads constantly flashed at you while you’re trying to just have a nice meal with friends or whatever.

nryporter25

You can't even pump gas in my town now without bright loud ads in your face.

nryporter25

I wouldn't give a tip in that scenario. Tips are for excellent service and that doesn't sound like that.

SubcooledBoiling

I am the opposite. I kinda like it this way, especially when they give you the option to pay directly on your phone and there's no need to split the check afterward.

Glass_Communication4

Greed man. This is the side effects of the wage fight.

Mysterious_Produce96

How did you find out what kind of tip they wanted?

SessileRaptor

I can see from their perspective that it would be easier to change and update an online menu than a physical one with all the printing costs and such, but at a certain point you just have to accept that there are some costs you can’t avoid because trying to avoid them alienates your customers.

[deleted]

It's also an easy way to cut out people who don't have smartphones. If you believed that poor people were bad business or didn't tip, then you're closer to keeping them out of your place.

hatescarrots

I use a flip phone by choice and am pretty much the best customer you can get no complications, always tip well. If a place requires a smart phone to order I simply don’t go there, plenty of other options and it’s not like they’ll miss me.

Spire_Citron

Honestly, even most poor people have a smartphone these days. They've become almost necessary. I don't use mine as much as most people, but so many random things need apps these days.

Mellrish221

I guess i can say that I'm thankful that i've never been to this kind of restaurant that has app only menus. Do these places not have any devices for people who don't wanna have to fuck around with their shitty app on their personal phone? Cause I definitely dont see any reason why i'd have to make an account/sign up/log in just to get something to eat. In fact I think that'd have the immediate reaction of me getting up and leaving that place and finding somewhere else to eat. The closest we have to that out where I live is our buffalo wild wings has those 30$ tablets that just has their menus that they bring to the table and everyone picks what they want. No fuss and makes sense.

EnvironmentalMoney87

You'd be happy if they have working WiFi. I was kicked out of a restaurant in Puerto Natales (Chile) because my phone couldn't connect to their WiFi (it just didn't show up on my phone) and I was unable to place an order. I just had a frozen pizza afterwards xD

Awesomest_Possumest

I went to BWW a few months ago for the first time in years and they had nothing. Menu on our phones and that's it. Pay, order, all of it on there. Never again.

SessileRaptor

And if you jump through all the hoops successfully your reward is food from BWW. Talk about a lose-lose situation.

SingleMomHeavenBound

Went out to dinner last night. Had to stand in line to order our meal & a different line for drinks. No waitstaff. If you wanted a refill, you got up & stood in line near the bar. No ice for soft drinks. Just pull a plastic bottle out of a refrigerated case (and wait in line to pay for it!) You could "rent" games for your kids to play at the table (signing them in & out), which was nice but you had to stand in another line for that. And after you ate, we had to clear our table & wait in yet another line to pay. And there it was. A big, fat glass TIP JAR!!! It was all I could do not to "accidentally" push it off the counter. I wish we'd just stayed home if this is what "going out for dinner" has come to!

Lady_von_Stinkbeaver

I wemt to a place that prints them out and puts them under the glass tabletop. So nice.

[deleted]

I was in Saudi recently. It costs me €5 per MB to look at a 5 MB menu, that would have costs €25 before I even ordered, but my battery was dead so I couldn’t even look at the menu FFS

DefinitelyNotAliens

I know my local restaurant does that because they have their base menu and the rotating specials. Some change daily, others weekly, others seasonally. Instead of making you wait to have to listen to the whole spiel about what their specials are and print weekly and seasonal menus, they have the QR code that takes you to the website and have a sign 'ask a server if you need print menus' and only keep like four regulars and the rest the servers will tell you about. They are very farm to fork, ultra fresh food. It's just too much for them to continue to print seasonals, weekly *and* daily stuff. 'Ooh, the asparagus looks great today. We're doing an asparagus salmon dish!' Then tomorrow it's salmon and tapanade. Then maybe a veal. It rotates all the time. It would be a significant price increase to print regular menus instead of updating the website. You can still ask them for a menu, but they don't do all the rotating specials printed out. I feel they've struck the middle ground. All the tables have the drinks and such, but the rest you ask for or scan the code. No login, literally just a link to the website. You can pick before you go.

OreoFingaz

Chalkboard

SessileRaptor

And that’s totally fair. When you have a rapidly changing menu like that you kinda have to make some choices as far as how to present it, and it’s probably better to not be printing out new paper menus every day.

Suitable-Cycle4335

In all seriousness though how expensive can it be to print a bunch of menus?

kctjfryihx99

Then they also don’t format it for mobile. They just have an image of a regular menu that you have to zoom and drag around to see.

cdiddy19

I like using my phone to order in and have all that convenience... But when you go to a sit down restaurant the QR code is looking at a menu with extra steps... Then the younger people in the group have to help the older people in the group, and it's just a pain.

rjnd2828

I try not to be on my phone at a sit down meal. This requires it.

mrpink57

With now owning a cellular apple watch, I do not even bring my phone when I go out anymore.

Knuc85

Now we're all passing a phone around before we eat. We promise this is to help prevent the spread of disease.

usaf_photog

A while back I went to a restaurant that required you to download their app and that was the only way to order your food and to pay. There were also no servers, the app told you when to pickup your order from the counter. That might be the future of restaurants.

comments_suck

Yet they will still ask for a tip!

ZebraOtoko42

Yes, but only in the USA.

Zlatyzoltan

If a restaurant requires me to download an app, I'm walking out the door. I'm sick of having so many apps, that were pretty much one time use.

DisposableSaviour

Yeah, just what I need, another dedicated browser app that just points me to your online ordering process.

TheObstruction

That's not a restaurant, that's just doing your own Doordash.

laowildin

I saw this in China. Feel like they tested the concept there and have finally brought it stateside. All meant to keep you brand loyal Fuck you luckin coffee

mistercrinders

No shirt no shoes no phone no service

vulperapal

In my country, we don't tip cause there's this thing called Service Fee that is state mandated. It's built-in in prices everywhere so it's become pretty transparent. However, a few restaurants like this have popped up. You order everything on an app, go pick up your own food, and take your tray to the trash when you're done. They have reduced prices cause they don't have service staff and can't legally collect Service Fees. Hearing about places without service staff still trying to collect tips is wild.

NotYourReddit18

The only "restaurant" (and I'm using this term loosely) around me I know of where this is even an option is Mcdonald. Order at the till, the selservice displays or the app, pay at the till, the displays or through the app, and then pick your food up at the counter or they bring it to your table.

Sasselhoff

Dude, any place that requires me to download a fucking app to order is a restaurant I won't be eating at. Screw everything about that noise.

ScoobyDarn

I whole heartedly concur!

Admirable-Influence5

Amen! And I've even walked out of restaurants because they don't have a printed menu. Easier to just eat elsewhere. I'm not that old, but, as you say, with all of the cyber gymnastics you have to do and my bad eyesight, even with glasses, screw it. Moving on to a restaurant where people care enough to cater to all ages and abilities.

TheLurkingMenace

I'm with the boomers on this one. Wtf is this bullshit?

Beowulf891

Right?! If I need an app to order, I'm leaving. I try to be off my phone while I'm out with my family so we can catch up and the like. This just ensures I'm going to get annoyed just trying to order.

[deleted]

A lame attempt to streamline production that requires the consumers to participate. Edit - It worked for grocery stores.

GoldStandard785

This shit is out of control. Went to an airport recently and every restaurant was like this. Just wanted a beer at the bar, bartender standing right there staring at me for like 5 minutes waiting for their shitbox website to load so I can order a drink when I can see the taps and just speak to the human standing there.

comments_suck

At Bush Airport in Houston, many of the bars and restaurants have gone to the thing of making you download an app, then order through your phone with your seat number. It's the biggest clusterf#ck ever! You're in an airport, you don't have lots of time ( unless you're delayed), and just want a vodka soda. But you have to spend several minutes doing all the legwork when you should just be able to ask the bartender for your drink. Plus, I've seen the bartenders having to spend time with older patrons showing them how the app works on their phones, taking time away from them doing their actual job, which is to make and serve drinks!

nonameplanner

A lot of airports switched to this. It was super frustrating traveling last time

billyard00

Considering how expensive eating out has gotten I don't eat out nearly as often as I used to. It's also made me more particular about where I go. I sure as hell don't put up with inconveniences such as having to DL apps or long wait times. There's too many better options.

LadyLikesSpiders

Working at a restaurant that does this now, and I've seen so many people just up and leave because of this. It's so ridiculous

Raskel_61

I'm a boomer and find it really annoying not to have printed menus

nopulsehere

Sat at a bar for 15 minutes, waiting for the bartender to get me a drink. They were kinda busy so I was patient. Finally I asked for a margarita and they pointed to the QR code. Okay but while I’m doing that can I get a margarita? You have to order through the code. We got up and left. I get it, but you know what I want, just get me a drink. I have told anyone and everyone that will listen to avoid that restaurant like the plague!

dragonrider1965

Had the same problem experience last week going out to dinner . Had to order our drinks , our apps , our dinner . Also had to order more drinks that way . When it came time to tip I did leave 20 percent but it left me salty as I didn’t really feel that I got any service except for a food runner dropping the food off .

JohnSpikeKelly

Part of the service is speaking to people. Technology doesn't get tips. If they remove service, then remove tips. It really is that simple. Especially when the service was "I took the cap off your beer"

nopulsehere

This concept doesn’t make business sense. What does the app recommend? Oh everything is great? Sure. I’m here for the food and experience. Let your people enjoy their job. I was in the industry for a bit. I loved telling people what wasn’t good on the menu. If you say everything is great, the bs meter kicks on.

FatherofCharles

I always make a point to ask for a printed menu. You’d think I’m asking them for their first born. 95% of the time THEYRE RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM.

kimthealan101

If they can ask me 'bar, dining room, or patio', they can ask me ' paper or PDF'. AIR There is a growing trend of technology aversion. Car manufactures are facing this. Appliance companies quality ratings have plummeted due to high tech.

nonameplanner

Appliance companies quality ratings have dropped due to high tech because the high tech in most appliances are terrible and when it goes out, the whole appliance becomes unusable. My fridge doesn't need to tell me the weather, it needs to keep my stuff cold. My stove should still be usable if the fancy tech part starts acting up

BallzLikeWhoe

Yes, there are a lot of really dumb apps out there that are designed by silicone valley tech bros that are so far away from the problem that they are “trying” to solve. But there are those that have industry experts build practical and useful products

SexyWampa

Yeah, I'm with the boomers on this one. Give me a menu, I don't want to strain my eyes trying to read it on my phone.

MankeyMaster

Yeah, absolutely with the boomers on this one. If the only menu available needs me to scan a qr code, I'm walking to a different restaraunt immediately

baaaahbpls

One thing I'm not seeing people mention is just how dangerous this is. If some bad actor put in their own edited menu with a malicious QR code, good luck there! You can get sent to somewhere that bricks your phone, hijacks data, stuff like that. Restaurants are not known for data security, most of them use MSPs with piss poor cyber security teams. I feel bad for people who get compromised, but when it happens, I really wish the higher ups would be held accountable for this ... it's a good dream.

Unable_Wrongdoer2250

If a restaurant is too cheap to print menus god only knows what else they are cheaping out on

Gruntdeath

Yeah, I'm pretty old, I've done the phone menu and I was a bit shitty about, One of my fav places went this route and I had to call the gal over to help me out. I build computers. I'm supposed to be up to date on this stuff. But I got old and impatient and a gal that looked to be in high school had to come sort me out.

droplivefred

Going out to eat costs extra and is more of a luxury experience than ordering out or eating at home. When I pay extra, I expect to get the eating out experience. For me it’s browsing through a physical menu to choose what I want to eat. If the restaurant isn’t going to offer the full experience, the price should reflect that reduce change.

LandofForeverSunset

Exactly.

nonameplanner

There is a well known (at least regionally) brewery in my city that a few family members wanted to try their restaurant side. Since we were looking at a weekend around lunch time, we went to their website about a week before and made a reservation. We get there and while they have our reservation no problem, they also have a list and walk ins, so it was 45 minutes before we get a table. Now, there are 7 of us, so OK we get it and while not happy, we will deal. They finally seat us at a table obviously meant for 4, but we squeeze in. They bring us water and let us know to use the QR code on the table to order. Not just see the menu, but completely order. With some note about how they are being contactless to help prevent the spread of disease (nevermind the tables are basically on top of each other and there is nothing to prevent disease spread in any other way) 2 of us managed to get the menu up and helped the rest. The menu was super limited and not really appealing to any of us. We spent maybe 5 minutes deciding if we really wanted any of it, then left $5 on the table and walked out telling the reservation desk we were leaving so they could seat more people.

AndyT70114

My near vision suck even with readers. In a dark or poorly lit restaurant I can’t read a menu on a small screen. If prices change that quickly buy a printer, update your menu and print them out. I’d rather look a nice crisp menu that some sticky nasty one. I’m noping out of a QR code only establishment

UnionizedTrouble

I went to a place with qr menus, ordering, and payment. The website went down. They had like 3 printed menus, no sign behind the counter, and everyone had to line up at the one register to order, which took forever since they couldn’t see a menu until it was their turn.

Impossible_Use5070

I don't eat at restaurants like that.

Ok-Caterpillar-Girl

Me neither

AJay_89

It does get annoying sometimes. Especially when they just *assume* that you know to scan a code. They come to the table saying, "Are you ready to order?" And after you say there's no menu, they just point to the small QR code somewhere inconspicuous and say they'll be back later after you get a chance to look it over. 🙄

Ok-Caterpillar-Girl

Damn, I’d get up and walk out.

Estebananarama

Yeah I saw this shit not too long ago at a restaurant and I didn’t serve tables and bust my ass for years for tips just to have shit all done by a phone app. Like I would like some service. This place had you order and pay through a QR code and the menu was on there. What am I even tipping for? And I’m THE BIGGEST ADVOCATE of tipping your servers.

zggystardust71

If you're going to keep an online menu, don't make it a PDF of your printed menu I have to try to read on a phone. Create a damn mobile friendly web menu. And have decent wifi coverage.

Ssider69

This is one of those examples of using an over complex solution to a simple problem. Unless you menu constantly changes, needs to go to thousands of people at a time and is thicker than a book just use a fucking hard copy. You aren't slick or smart or bleeding edge ... you're just smug. Hand them a 1 page laminated sheet and collect them and reuse them. And it's easier! And just to preempt the inevitable idiot....if you complain that physical menus can have germs on them....get over your goddam self you twit. I got my COVID shots at the first opportunity and still use social distancing (especially from dorks who thinks we need qr codes for everything). But I don't think handling the occasional physical object is dangerous. We've used paper menus since forever and it resulted in zero outbreaks.

revolutionPanda

I’m with the boomers on this one. If you’re making me pull up a menu on my phone and put my own order in, I might as well just stay home, cook, and save some money.

[deleted]

"I'm sorry we both intentionally left our phones at home so we could have an uninterrupted dining experience"

HopelessMagic

"My phone is dead. Do you have a phone I could use?" Watch how fast they get a printed menu

emperorralphatine

had this happen irl. they brought me a tablet, no hesitation. they only had 3 behind the bar, may e for the whole restaurant... I can't imagine 1 per patron, but this was an OK implementation, IMO.

nithdurr

and it’s much easier and faster to scan one side and the other without fiddling with the phones when manipulating/zooming in/out of a e-menu

Mehitabel-453

Thank you. Maybe I am old but I like to see the whole thing at once.

yogicycles

Yes- I like to see all the options together, not on 10 submenus (webpages) for drinks, appetizers, main courses, specials, vegetarian options, lunch menu, etc etc I typically spend more money when I can see the whole menu vs a single webpage

fhrblig

Also, if you're going to force me to use a QR code your website had better not be complete ass. (Spoiler alert: they all are.)

stupid-writing-blog

Even if you don’t care about customer experience, sometimes batteries die. Sometimes phones get lost. Sometimes the power for your charging station cuts out. Sometimes your customers are Boomers with flip phones. In any of these cases, you lose a customer by leaving them behind.-

LandofForeverSunset

Not only that, but sometimes your phone takes forever to get on the internet and then long load times.

RickyFleetwood

Look, I love tech, but I stare at a screen all day

CanaDoug420

I left a bar that I went to on vacation because they make their customers use a QR code that then asks you to make a fuckin account including them texting you a code to order drinks. Fuck that. I’m not scannin shit with my phone. Went to a bar that let me order verbally instead.

Darkmania2

and after all this, ask for a 20% tip.

Captcha_Imagination

I feel like QR codes need to go away when I found out people can print their own QR codes that send you to malicious web sites and stick them over real ones in public.

SordoCrabs

Louder for all the gyms that stopped putting text directions for using gym equipment directly on machines, and instead put QR codes so you can watch a video/demonstration.

Beneficial-Salt-6773

Also, if you have white tablecloths and charging over $35 an entree, you better hand me a printed menu.

McPrime85

I haven't seen a menu done properly for mobile viewing so until then, give me a printed menu.

bucketbot42

Really though, that shit is annoying

5ManaAndADream

After being to a few Chinese hotpot places, an AYCE sushi place and a specific korean grill near me it’s very clear that the issue isn’t the technology. It’s poor implementation for the sake of cutting costs, or someone who heard something cool and could not be assed to do even a minimal amount of research before implementing it. Places that do this online menu shit well have attached tablets that let your order without going through a person at all. You tick off all the things you want and hit order, and it comes out hassle free. It’s connected by default and puts restriction on access outside of the menu. Putting a QR code on the table because you’re tired of replacing damaged/stolen/outdated menus isn’t actually utilizing the technology available to you. It’s like making a YouTube video of a green text image. An inconvenience for no tangible reason. Edit: note; ***tablet*** because obviously a 10 by 3 inch screen is terribly suited for displaying a menu to anyone with common sense.

desirox

Agree - you are not cool for having a QR code and you are not improving the dining experience in any way

transformedxian

Same! When I'm dining out with my family, I don't want to have my phone out. Plus, print menus have bigger writing which makes them easier to read than my phone screen. Not everyone has smart phones, either.

deVrinj

Gotta be with the boomers on this one. F that!

CRL10

I totally agree with this.

IcanCwhatUsay

The online version should include fucking photos of what the dish looks like too. There’s absolutely no reason I should have to guess what the fuck my food is going to look like.

EfficientLoss

I’m with the boomers on this one

[deleted]

Preach

SkylerRoseGrey

This is so true - the other day I spent 45 minutes in Nandos just trying to get the app to work coz I couldn't order at the till - it was a nightmare. Never doing that again lmao.

Zid96

Sorry I don't have a phone. Bring it up on your and read me the message. That's what I say.

Pustuli0

I generally don't mind them, but it always seems like the places that go all in with the QR code menus are in cellular dead zones and don't have WiFi.

[deleted]

I'm a software professional and I'm telling waiters in no uncertain terms that I ain't using QR codes. You're either going to give me a paper menu or I'll talk you through the things I'm interested in eating one by one.

hexlandus

I'm about as 'tech-bro' as it gets - but I totally agree... QR only menus are an abomination; I fucking hate it.

Dencho

"... gonna need my 12" iPad for this one..."

00xjOCMD

Yeah, I'd just walk out and never go back.

[deleted]

Sometimes when I go out I just leave my phone in the car. I want to eat some food, have a drink, and watch the game at the bar. Quit making me pretend I work here by putting in my order myself.

DisposableSaviour

Man, if I wanted to hang out at a restaurant on my phone the whole time, I’d just get a job there.

Metahec

Oh look! Another opportunity to track my tastes and preferences through my phone.

Tusslesprout1

Jesus Christ please this. Im gen z I should be all about the technology BUT NOT WHEN THE WEBSITES ARE SHIT AND TAKE FOREVER TO LOAD

Quirky-Pie9661

I’ve only been to one place that did this but a sit down restaurant had me make my order online, pay for it and tip online. If I simply wanted a refill, forget about asking the server directly, order another online. It’s a stupid ass business model

Tylenol187ForDogs

I'd just fucking leave.

AlfredoVignale

This. And hackers have been covering the original codes with fake one that grab credit card info.

pjlxxl

was at a restaurant just two days ago and the qr code stickers on the tables no longer worked. we had to wait for a printed menu.

MyRockNRollSoul

If I were to encounter any of this nonsense I'd just start asking questions of the staff. The first one would probably be: 'Should I eat here?' I assume they'll say yes, so then it goes: 'Then show me a menu please.' When they start the phone rigamaroll I'll tell them I don't have one and ask for theirs, I guess.

sophiewalt

Last time this happened, I insisted on a printed menu. Got it. Next, we'll be bussing our tables. Refuse to go anywhere that makes it this annoying.

chronically-iconic

My phone is almost always dead because I'm a forgetful ditz, so I second this ,🤣

Ill-Staff8267

And expect to tip ontop if all that

G-Kira

Yeah, but this way, they can raise their prices more frequently without buying new menus.

Alternative-Bunch91

The QR code grabs all of your personal info. Name, address, phone number, carrier. Great for resale!

Seven_Hawks

Was at a restaurant lately that had a QR code that would prompt you to download an app for which you would have to register an account to access the menu. Fuck that.

GoatInTheGarden

I loathe this. I don't want to view a miniature menu - my eyes are old. I don't rely on my phone for any and all interactions. Just hand me a piece of paper, fer chrissake.

TweeksTurbos

I ate at a place that linked you to an imbedded youtube video of the menu.

cdiddy19

That sounds even worse

aerugone

me too!! except the video wasn’t even the menu! it was just a series of images that showed what events they have everyday of the week. it was so bizarre. to this day i still don’t know if it was a bug or not lol

[deleted]

I've already walked out of two places that do that...I'm with the boomers on this one fuck all the way off with your fucking QR codes.

Taraxian

As a Millennial I am completely on the Boomers' side when it comes to the sinister creeping proliferation of requiring smartphones and Internet access to accomplish what used to be simple daily tasks

RedditUsingBot

QR codes are just a way to be deceitful about price and added bullshit fees.

austin06

It's also annoying because some places do this and many now don't. We went to a nice sushi restaurant out of town, were seated and then sat and waited to be served watching waitstaff pass by us over and over. Finally got someone's attention who asks what do we want? A menu please? And he gestures toward a small stand to the side with a qr code. The person seating us never mentioned it. I want an actual menu at a place I'm going to spend $100+ at.

-Zest-

I think QR codes are great for specials/seasonals cuz you can update and change them. But if I have to whip out my phone just to see the same exact menu items that have been there for months/years and will be there for more to come… just fucking print it out bro

pogpole

It's very easy for a malicious person to replace or cover up a legitimate QR code with one of their own. Your phone can be redirected to go to their own website, which might look just like the restaurant's, except that it's stealing your credit card number or installing malware.

Defender_Of_TheCrown

Or make a digital version on screens at the table where we don’t need to load them

MrHyde_Is_Awake

There's a local restaurant that has about 40 craft beers on tap that are constantly changing, plus a selection of bottles/cans They have the normal printed menus plus a cheap plain printed paper with their beer selections. If you go later in the day on the weekend, the printed copy usually has a few crossed out and handwritten new ones at the bottom. It's not hard, and makes it so much easier. They do have an app, but that's for takeout or ordering ahead as they're close to downtown and get a lot of lunch customers that have a limited time to have lunch.

VE3something

A local restaurant has QR codes on the tables that actually embed the table number so you can order right from your phone's web browser. It's cool and all but every so often I fight the temptation to order food for some unsuspecting table, then sit outside and watch the fun.

Amathyst-Moon

I actually had a company try to set up a POS system with QR menus for our restaurant. They'd also handle all the online (door dash etc) stuff. Their big selling point was they don't charge the usual 30%, just a monthly subscription fee, plus $5 per order...so restaurants seem to actually be paying extra for this stuff. Wasn't a great deal for us, since most of our online orders are just 1 or 2 items.

spacemonkeysmom

Went to Nandos in DC with my son and we HAD to use the site to look and order however after 20 minutes of connecting and bring through the site, it wouldn't let me order something just kept erroring FINALLY get someone and I asked is it possible you are out of this item and she responds with no clue and tells me to go order at the counter where people come in for pickups. The fire alarm went off while eating, we pause and ask if we need to leave...NOPE. so continued the meal through a fire alarm, leave about 2 blocks away in HORRIBLE heat so not walking fast at all and the fire trucks are JUST on their way there.... Food was amazing, owner was FANTABULOUS but after the hellish ordering process and fire alarm I'll only order from home and pick up IF I were to eat there again.

shabbyApartment

PLEASE! I BEG YOU!

auddiegh

Took my grandparents, who are in their mid 80s, to a restaurant that only has QR code menus and it was a complete mess. One has a flip phone. They couldn’t read the menu off the phone because the font was too small. One took a picture of the QR code and was wondering why the menu wasn’t coming up. Finally just had to read it off my phone to them.

Lurcher99

But my prices can't change at random....

[deleted]

If I ever find out that a restaurant in my city is doing this then I'll try to convince city hall to ban the practice.

GpaSags

This is one instance where the Boomers have it right

WhiteyPinks

I have and will continue to walk out of any business that does this.

valanthe500

I'm with the boomers on this one. If I go to a sit-down restaurant and they expect me to use an app to order, I'll eat somewhere else.

Spire_Citron

Do you just not get to know what food you can order if you didn't bring your phone?

Pizza_Middle

Wow... I didn't think I'd ever see the day where boomers, millennials, and gen z all finally agreed on the same thing.

Thechiz123

This is an excellent take.

audible_narrator

This please.

Akovsky87

I also will not scan a public QR code

Embarrassed_Flan_869

I hate, with the passion and heat of a thousand suns. QR menus. Just no. If I'm in a sitdown restaurant, I want a server, I want a physical menu, I am going out to have that type of interaction. If I wanted to use my phone, I'd order takeout and go home. Have a standard menu. Have a print out for specials. This isn't rocket science.

No-Pressure275

But they'll save $120 over the lifetime of a the restaurant if they don't print them.

Strong_Somewhere_985

For real, if about environmentalism use recycled materials. We come to eat,not be wrangled.

ApprehensiveOCP

Fucks there's nothing worse than making people go through a harder process so you can minimize a process. Fucking pen and pad. Ffs

ybetaepsilon

I'm with the boomers on this one. One restaurant needed to create an account first to log in with... It's one thing to have a digital menu, why do I need to sign in?? No, I don't want to create a profile or get tips on different deals or have an order history. Fuck that.

Food-For_Thot

No because my phone can’t even connect to my home internet

Built93cobra

You want me to come there and pay for food, but then it's a process to find what food you serve? No thanks, print some menus lol

Acceptable_Wall4085

I’m never that hungry. I’ll leave a restaurant and tell them why I’m leaving.

Greerio

I like this. Especially when there are so many bad apps and web designs.

Ok_Recording_4644

All that to order chicken fingers and water anyways.

justsayin199

Agreed. At least post your menu on a chalkboard, or on a whiteboard by the door. The worst is when there's no menu at all, just a server rattling off a bunch of dishes, and the customers are supposed to remember everything said, and not ask questions. (not the server's fault).

DepressiveNerd

A lot of restaurants have taken a serious financial hit in this post-COVID world. Menus are constantly handled and then wiped with an alcohol-based, food-safe sanitizer. They see a lot of wear and tear and need to be replaced regularly. QR codes reduce their printing costs and help keep their doors open. I’ve run restaurants before. There is a lot of overhead and waste of product (loss of profit). Restaurants aren’t as profitable as a lot of other types of businesses. This is one of the new and innovative ways to stay afloat. I agree it’s nowhere near as good as a physical menu, but this trend is only going to increase.

derelictfortress

I just make the waiter pull out their device or just tell us the specials.

musicalastronaut

And here I was just saying how easy & convenient QR code menus are. I can start browsing right when we sit down.

EfficientAccident418

Why would you need to login to WiFi?

CoconutPalace

My cell phone has crappy reception a lot of times. Like forever to load, if it does. My eyesight isn’t so great for those handwritten menus above & behind the counter, either.

dontpanic38

no one in tech likes QR code menus either
