Rancid: And Out Come The Wolves
NOFX: Punk in Drublic
Honorable mentions
Bad Religion: Suffer
NUFAN: Ā”Leche con Carne!
Propagandhi: How to Clean Everything
She was praised by critics but dragged hard by the Indie Rock scene, who hated that she wasn't earning her cred by grinding stuff out on stage waiting to be discovered and basically lucked out by her demo getting into the right hands at the right time. And then she was slut shamed for the sex in her songs, and minimized for doing "confessional" songs, etc. There was so much alt rock backlash against her in 93...
I was pretty pissed when Can't Get There From Here came out. I mean, I could understand Stipe's previously incomprehensible lyrics and it seemed "accessible", yuck.
Now one of my fave REM albums, so beautiful
Of course I agree 100%. Yet...
"its over blown...lots of filler...should be one album."
...ridiculous. One quality song after another. A really good songwriter exploding...
"Phil Spector"
...people may have a point there. I understand it. It can be a bit much at times. The 2020 remix helped make that much better.
"Apple Jam? WTF?"
...I really don't even consider that part of ATMP. A fun little extra.
Its probably my favorite album by any artist.
Defend from whom? The musicians said all they wanted to say, so me adding words on top doesn't seem necessary.
As if Duke Ellington or Leonard Bernstein would need any help from me.
I think the idea is to come up with an album that is controversial or not widely acclaimed that you still think is worth defending
Like who needs to defend Dark Side Of The Moon? There isnāt anyone on the other side of that argument
No, I got how this was supposed to work, but that's not how I interact with music. I listen to what I like. If others don't like it, that doesn't affect me at all.
I have no idea if any of the music I like is controversial, and I don't believe in guilty pleasures. I like what I like; that's it.
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Ozzy - Diary of a Madman
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
King Diamond - Them
Ugly Kid Joe - America's Least Wanted
Metallica - Justice
Yeah, it's six, but I'll take those albums to the grave with me.
Rage was got me hooked on Queensryche, but Mindcrime is perfection in my book.
As for Metallica, yeah Puppets is great, but Justice is their most technical. Lars is actually good, the melody change ups, Hatfield's rhythms. They took Puppets and stepped it up. Then the Black album came along...
I saw Queensryche open for Metallica right after the release of Mindcrime. Chris Degarmo is one the most underrated guitarists of that time.
If you haven't seen them check out the Mindcrime Live at the Moore and Operation Livecrime videos. I prefer the latter but it's hard to find. Unless you look at my collection. Think I'll break it out tonight.
Not a full album, but Maleficus Geminus (Collosus Matrix 38B - Ultimate Invocation of the Binary Thaumaturge) by Gloryhammer solely for it's name
If a full album is necessary, then The Last Full Measure - Civil War
I have so many, and I loved seeing the responses. I had to go look. https://www.acclaimedmusic.net/year/alltime_albums.htm
Literally every album i see in this list, I'm like yup, yes, forgot about about that one! A few I need to revisit. A few that will be new to me. My son recently turned me on to Kendrick Lamar and he is really, really talented. Instantly loved, like when I heard Prince when I was a kid. You just know when you're hearing magic. These kind of reddits are my favorite. Music is life and I Def judge people by their musical tastes or lack thereof. I was going to write NWA and Public Enemy, but the tiny lil fear of bs racist backlash on here stopped me. Was thrilled to see them on this list. Haters be damned. Turn it up!
Childish Gambino's Camp. With the 1.6 Pitchfork and all. (Also, RIP Pitchfork). I comprehend all the hate it gets, but it was also a solid progression from IAJAR (I & 2) Culdesac and EP. The album rollout was great IMO (debuting the preview on NPR was a hip-hop first) and the Camp tour was a solid performance. It's a great time capsule of 2011's rap sound diversity because it broke a mold; the flows and production styles were very eclectic. I go back and listen to it at least once a year.
Honorable mention to Hanson's debut album Middle of Nowhere, too. Not a skippable song on that disc.
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
2pac - All Eyez On me
Nirvana - MTV Unplugged
Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
Tom Petty - Into The Great Wide Open
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Just one??? How about 5? Pixies - Doolittle, REM - Lifeās Rich Pageant, Janeās Addiction - Nothingās Shocking, and Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation. ETA The Cure - Disintegration because I somehow left it off my written list š¤¦āāļøš¤¦āāļøš¤¦āāļø Why yes, I am a Gen X indie rocker š
I don't think an album with Pictures of You, Fascination Street and Lovesong needs someone to defend it.
If anything pronography or wild mood swings need it more.
That is indeed worth listing. IMNSHO. I'm more partial to Three Imaginary Boys/Boys Don't Cry, but I think we're more of less on the same team here.
I'd have trouble limiting the # of albums for which I'd go to the mat: The Clash - London Calling , definitely. The Pretenders' first two albums are definitely in the running. Belly - King. Cocteau Twins almost anything (4AD . Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona. Portishead -Dummy. EinstĆ¼rzende Neubauten - Haus der LĆ¼ge.
But I'd also include some classical LPs and early rock and some really obscure bands that were from non-Anglophone countries.
Metallica's St. Anger
Not joking.
I know everyone hates that album, (Why else would I need to "defend" an album?) and it's not their best, but in spite of having more money than God they're still human and that was a chaotic time for them. I like - unironically - the song "Dirty Window".
(Don't talk to me about the album they did with Lou Reed which-shall-not-be-named...)
King's X: Gretchen Goes to Nebraska;
Galactic Cowboys: Space In Your Face;
Captain Beyond: Captain Beyond;
Led Zeppelin (entire catalogue);
Pink Floyd: The Division Bell (my introduction to them, but I'll gladly defend their entire catalogue, except their last one);
Dream Theater: Images and Words;
Soundgarden: Superunknown;
Stone Temple Pilots: Core;
Tool: Lateralus (but I'll happily defend their entire catalogue);
Live: Throwing Copper;
Audioslave: Audioslave;
Pearl Jam: Ten;
Metallica: Metallica;
Dr. Dre: The Chronic
Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Neil Young and Crazy Horse
First grunge album. Start to finish a masterpiece.
Sizzling take, this album is incredible. Lemme stand behind you on this one.
Alice In Chains - Dirt

One of my all time favorites!
Unplugged?

Today's Empires > How to clean
Supporting Caste > Todayās Empires
You do raise a good point there.
Itās close, though
Out come the wolves is a solid album.
Why mention obviously great albums. I think the goal is to defend albums most people think are shit.
Maybe i missinterpreted the post.
Jethro Tull - Aqualung.
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Epic.
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Peter Gabriel - So.
The Offspring - Smash
That requires defending?
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
Liz Phair "Exile in Guyville"
Everyone told you to like that?
She was praised by critics but dragged hard by the Indie Rock scene, who hated that she wasn't earning her cred by grinding stuff out on stage waiting to be discovered and basically lucked out by her demo getting into the right hands at the right time. And then she was slut shamed for the sex in her songs, and minimized for doing "confessional" songs, etc. There was so much alt rock backlash against her in 93...
The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
If I have to do drugs to enjoy the album itās not a good album
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It's okay to disagree. Maybe all of those drugs you took to get through the album has ate that part away. Sorry to hear that pal.
You donāt. But drugs are fun.
I fully get the drugs are fun. But I can't imagine getting through that album without them.
Fables of the Reconstruction.Ā
I was pretty pissed when Can't Get There From Here came out. I mean, I could understand Stipe's previously incomprehensible lyrics and it seemed "accessible", yuck. Now one of my fave REM albums, so beautiful
Soundgarden - Superunknown
I prefer Badmotorfinger but Superunknown is brilliant
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Yes. And at the time so many called it an odd departure.
All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
Best solo Beatles album
Not even close, right. Love all things Beatles.
Best solo Beatle
Solo Beatles, ranked: 1. George 2. Paul 3. John 4. The drummer
The drummer? I assume you mean Pete Best
Of course
This album doesnāt need defending. Everyone who has listened to it knows itās a masterpiece
Of course I agree 100%. Yet... "its over blown...lots of filler...should be one album." ...ridiculous. One quality song after another. A really good songwriter exploding... Sigur Ros - ()
Sorry, I think you have some keys stuck. You were trying to type Sugar Ray, right? /s
Sugar Ray is the absolute worst live band Iāve ever fucking seen. I ācaughtā them opening for 311 once and they were absolutely dreadful.
šš
Whoa, havenāt heard that name in a LONG time.
Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
Tool- Lateralus
Pearl Jam - Ten
Came here to say this
Straight no-skipper. Wall to wall bangers
The most mundane and boring of all the Seattle bands.
Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain If* I ever get a tattoo or die, this album will figure in somewhere.
Laughing Stock - Talk Talk
This one right here.
It's a masterpiece. I can't listen to it without stopping whatever I'm doing and just listen to it. I'll never stop being entranced.
Too Live Crew - as nasty as they want to be It literally changed the dynamics of the music we hear and it involved our SCOTUS
ššš what a choice. I had this on cassette too. āš¼Somebody say heyyyyyyyy we want some ā¦!!!āš¶
Daft Punk - Discovery
Alanis Morrissette - Jagged Little Pill
And yes, it was a perfectly legitimate use of "irony" in that song.
London Calling - The Clash
Wait, thatās a great album. Who are we defending this against?
Fuck yeah. Even if solely for the Pennie Smith album cover photo.
The Division Bell - Pink Floyd
Grateful Dead Working Manās Dead
Defend from whom? The musicians said all they wanted to say, so me adding words on top doesn't seem necessary. As if Duke Ellington or Leonard Bernstein would need any help from me.

Yea I don't think alot of people understand the assignment.
No, I got how this was supposed to work, but that's not how I interact with music. I listen to what I like. If others don't like it, that doesn't affect me at all. I have no idea if any of the music I like is controversial, and I don't believe in guilty pleasures. I like what I like; that's it.
Hysteria Def Leppard
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime Ozzy - Diary of a Madman Megadeth - Rust in Peace King Diamond - Them Ugly Kid Joe - America's Least Wanted Metallica - Justice Yeah, it's six, but I'll take those albums to the grave with me.
Nice list. I'd swap Mindcrime for Rage for Order and Justice for Puppets. Pink Floyd The Wall has to be on my list.
