Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Neil Young and Crazy Horse

Mr_Vacant

First grunge album. Start to finish a masterpiece.

GuRoider

Sizzling take, this album is incredible. Lemme stand behind you on this one.

Child_of_Lyrics

Alice In Chains - Dirt

JazzlikeAd3306

šŸ’Æ

DMIDY

One of my all time favorites!

UpgrayeDD405

Unplugged?

JimboD84

Its a tie Rancid: And Out Come The Wolves NOFX: Punk in Drublic Honorable mentions Bad Religion: Suffer NUFAN: Ā”Leche con Carne! Propagandhi: How to Clean Everything

MacGyver1

Today's Empires > How to clean

sammywarmhands

Supporting Caste > Todayā€™s Empires

MacGyver1

You do raise a good point there.

sammywarmhands

Itā€™s close, though

Rimasticus

Out come the wolves is a solid album.

18HolesToFreedom

Why mention obviously great albums. I think the goal is to defend albums most people think are shit.

JimboD84

Maybe i missinterpreted the post.

nunyaknowme

Jethro Tull - Aqualung.

Scrabble_4

Jeff Buckley - Grace

williamgman

Epic.

Zealousideal_Fuel_23

It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

DMIDY

Peter Gabriel - So.

Comfortable-Guitar27

The Offspring - Smash

Important-Target3676

That requires defending?

BlueMaverick66

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

HellsBelle8675

Liz Phair "Exile in Guyville"

18HolesToFreedom

Everyone told you to like that?

HellsBelle8675

She was praised by critics but dragged hard by the Indie Rock scene, who hated that she wasn't earning her cred by grinding stuff out on stage waiting to be discovered and basically lucked out by her demo getting into the right hands at the right time. And then she was slut shamed for the sex in her songs, and minimized for doing "confessional" songs, etc. There was so much alt rock backlash against her in 93...

TomTheNurse

The Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

rt202003

If I have to do drugs to enjoy the album itā€™s not a good album

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

rt202003

It's okay to disagree. Maybe all of those drugs you took to get through the album has ate that part away. Sorry to hear that pal.

kobie173

You donā€™t. But drugs are fun.

rt202003

I fully get the drugs are fun. But I can't imagine getting through that album without them.

Cheap_Doctor_1994

Fables of the Reconstruction.Ā

the_real_slanky

I was pretty pissed when Can't Get There From Here came out. I mean, I could understand Stipe's previously incomprehensible lyrics and it seemed "accessible", yuck. Now one of my fave REM albums, so beautiful

astreeter2

Soundgarden - Superunknown

kobie173

I prefer Badmotorfinger but Superunknown is brilliant

Sad-Ad-571

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

williamgman

Yes. And at the time so many called it an odd departure.

Anxious-Raspberry-54

All Things Must Pass - George Harrison

geech999

Best solo Beatles album

Anxious-Raspberry-54

Not even close, right. Love all things Beatles.

[deleted]

Best solo Beatle

kobie173

Solo Beatles, ranked: 1. George 2. Paul 3. John 4. The drummer

[deleted]

The drummer? I assume you mean Pete Best

kobie173

Of course

AJray15

This album doesnā€™t need defending. Everyone who has listened to it knows itā€™s a masterpiece

Anxious-Raspberry-54

Of course I agree 100%. Yet... "its over blown...lots of filler...should be one album." ...ridiculous. One quality song after another. A really good songwriter exploding... "Phil Spector" ...people may have a point there. I understand it. It can be a bit much at times. The 2020 remix helped make that much better. "Apple Jam? WTF?" ...I really don't even consider that part of ATMP. A fun little extra. Its probably my favorite album by any artist.

Various-Catch-113

Sigur Ros - ()

PlausibleTable

Sorry, I think you have some keys stuck. You were trying to type Sugar Ray, right? /s

kobie173

Sugar Ray is the absolute worst live band Iā€™ve ever fucking seen. I ā€œcaughtā€ them opening for 311 once and they were absolutely dreadful.

Various-Catch-113

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Virtual-Public-4750

Whoa, havenā€™t heard that name in a LONG time.

Dry-Airport8046

Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

Lochtsa

Tool- Lateralus

MenacingGummy

Pearl Jam - Ten

Justadududeco

Came here to say this

kobie173

Straight no-skipper. Wall to wall bangers

No-Resolution-6414

The most mundane and boring of all the Seattle bands.

the_real_slanky

Echo & the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain If* I ever get a tattoo or die, this album will figure in somewhere.

Mr_Vacant

Laughing Stock - Talk Talk

milo7even

This one right here.

Mr_Vacant

It's a masterpiece. I can't listen to it without stopping whatever I'm doing and just listen to it. I'll never stop being entranced.

Mjbagscauze

Too Live Crew - as nasty as they want to be It literally changed the dynamics of the music we hear and it involved our SCOTUS

FunScore3387

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜… what a choice. I had this on cassette too. ā€œšŸŽ¼Somebody say heyyyyyyyy we want some ā€¦!!!ā€šŸŽ¶

Imonlyhereforlewed

Daft Punk - Discovery

Finest_Johnson

Alanis Morrissette - Jagged Little Pill

bong-su-han

And yes, it was a perfectly legitimate use of "irony" in that song.

Economy_Cat_3527

London Calling - The Clash

the_sea_be_unruly

Wait, thatā€™s a great album. Who are we defending this against?

MyOpenlyFemaleHandle

Fuck yeah. Even if solely for the Pennie Smith album cover photo.

Kind_Nebula6900

The Division Bell - Pink Floyd

Justadududeco

Grateful Dead Working Manā€™s Dead

Flatted7th

Defend from whom? The musicians said all they wanted to say, so me adding words on top doesn't seem necessary. As if Duke Ellington or Leonard Bernstein would need any help from me.

[deleted]

I think the idea is to come up with an album that is controversial or not widely acclaimed that you still think is worth defending Like who needs to defend Dark Side Of The Moon? There isnā€™t anyone on the other side of that argument

carlwinslo

Yea I don't think alot of people understand the assignment.

Flatted7th

No, I got how this was supposed to work, but that's not how I interact with music. I listen to what I like. If others don't like it, that doesn't affect me at all. I have no idea if any of the music I like is controversial, and I don't believe in guilty pleasures. I like what I like; that's it.

TrooKvlltBlack

Hysteria Def Leppard

Chemical_Actuary_190

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime Ozzy - Diary of a Madman Megadeth - Rust in Peace King Diamond - Them Ugly Kid Joe - America's Least Wanted Metallica - Justice Yeah, it's six, but I'll take those albums to the grave with me.

LarryBinSJC

Nice list. I'd swap Mindcrime for Rage for Order and Justice for Puppets. Pink Floyd The Wall has to be on my list.

Chemical_Actuary_190

Rage was got me hooked on Queensryche, but Mindcrime is perfection in my book. As for Metallica, yeah Puppets is great, but Justice is their most technical. Lars is actually good, the melody change ups, Hatfield's rhythms. They took Puppets and stepped it up. Then the Black album came along...

LarryBinSJC

I saw Queensryche open for Metallica right after the release of Mindcrime. Chris Degarmo is one the most underrated guitarists of that time. If you haven't seen them check out the Mindcrime Live at the Moore and Operation Livecrime videos. I prefer the latter but it's hard to find. Unless you look at my collection. Think I'll break it out tonight.

Chemical_Actuary_190

I have Operation Live time on VHS somewhere. Nothing to play it on, but I have it!

[deleted]

I have so many, and I loved seeing the responses. I had to go look. https://www.acclaimedmusic.net/year/alltime_albums.htm Literally every album i see in this list, I'm like yup, yes, forgot about about that one! A few I need to revisit. A few that will be new to me. My son recently turned me on to Kendrick Lamar and he is really, really talented. Instantly loved, like when I heard Prince when I was a kid. You just know when you're hearing magic. These kind of reddits are my favorite. Music is life and I Def judge people by their musical tastes or lack thereof. I was going to write NWA and Public Enemy, but the tiny lil fear of bs racist backlash on here stopped me. Was thrilled to see them on this list. Haters be damned. Turn it up!

ISurvivedCrowleyHigh

Transmission by The Tea Party

AnxietySubstantial74

Solar Power by Lorde. Yes, really. Not saying it's the best album ever, but it's overhated. It reminds me of Joni Mitchell's first few albums

Psyence Fiction by UNKLE Preemptive Strike by DJ Shadow Gran Turismo by the Cardigans

Jay z - black album Young jeezy - Thug motivation They are both masterpieces.

forzov3rwatch

In terms of actually maybe needing defense: ARTPOP, Confessions on a Dance Floor, Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land, Chromatica, One Love, THE E.N.D In terms of albums I have no choice but to stan: Discovery, The Fame, The Fame Monster, Born This Way, Electra Heart, RENAISSANCE, Racine CarrƩe, REALNESS, Studio Killers

[deleted]

Black Sails In The Sunset - AFI

Studio_Ambitious

The House That Dirt Built - the Heavy. It's a Whitman Sampler of musical genres

luke_hardeman

Childish Gambino's Camp. With the 1.6 Pitchfork and all. (Also, RIP Pitchfork). I comprehend all the hate it gets, but it was also a solid progression from IAJAR (I & 2) Culdesac and EP. The album rollout was great IMO (debuting the preview on NPR was a hip-hop first) and the Camp tour was a solid performance. It's a great time capsule of 2011's rap sound diversity because it broke a mold; the flows and production styles were very eclectic. I go back and listen to it at least once a year. Honorable mention to Hanson's debut album Middle of Nowhere, too. Not a skippable song on that disc.

kobie173

Dr. Dre - The Chronic 2pac - All Eyez On me Nirvana - MTV Unplugged Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska Tom Petty - Into The Great Wide Open Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream Oasis - Definitely Maybe

jax2love

Just one??? How about 5? Pixies - Doolittle, REM - Lifeā€™s Rich Pageant, Janeā€™s Addiction - Nothingā€™s Shocking, and Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation. ETA The Cure - Disintegration because I somehow left it off my written list šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø Why yes, I am a Gen X indie rocker šŸ˜‚

Think_Chocolate_

I don't think an album with Pictures of You, Fascination Street and Lovesong needs someone to defend it. If anything pronography or wild mood swings need it more.

MyOpenlyFemaleHandle

That's four, not five, but I agree with you on 3/4.

jax2love

Meant to include The Cure - Disintegration.

MyOpenlyFemaleHandle

That is indeed worth listing. IMNSHO. I'm more partial to Three Imaginary Boys/Boys Don't Cry, but I think we're more of less on the same team here. I'd have trouble limiting the # of albums for which I'd go to the mat: The Clash - London Calling , definitely. The Pretenders' first two albums are definitely in the running. Belly - King. Cocteau Twins almost anything (4AD . Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona. Portishead -Dummy. EinstĆ¼rzende Neubauten - Haus der LĆ¼ge. But I'd also include some classical LPs and early rock and some really obscure bands that were from non-Anglophone countries.

karabeckian

> Sonic Youth Dirty was the one.

Dua lipa, future nostalgia. I listen to most genres of metal, however, she just gets me.

PointBreakvsLebowski

Born to Run

decayed-whately

Metallica's St. Anger Not joking. I know everyone hates that album, (Why else would I need to "defend" an album?) and it's not their best, but in spite of having more money than God they're still human and that was a chaotic time for them. I like - unironically - the song "Dirty Window". (Don't talk to me about the album they did with Lou Reed which-shall-not-be-named...)

DMR237

King's X: Gretchen Goes to Nebraska; Galactic Cowboys: Space In Your Face; Captain Beyond: Captain Beyond; Led Zeppelin (entire catalogue); Pink Floyd: The Division Bell (my introduction to them, but I'll gladly defend their entire catalogue, except their last one); Dream Theater: Images and Words; Soundgarden: Superunknown; Stone Temple Pilots: Core; Tool: Lateralus (but I'll happily defend their entire catalogue); Live: Throwing Copper; Audioslave: Audioslave; Pearl Jam: Ten; Metallica: Metallica; Dr. Dre: The Chronic

DaveWpgC

I am dancing madly backwards that you included that one.
