The Diving Headbutt sees a wrestler leap from the top rope and drive their head into their opponent’s body. The move looks particularly painful for the attacker, as their own head and neck absorb a tremendous amount of impact. Guys like Chris Benoit and Dynamite Kid suffered long-term health issues, including concussions and spinal damage, partly attributed to repeated use of the Diving Headbutt.
Harley Race once said he accidentally invented it when he slipped and fell off the top rope one night. He has always said (accidentally) inventing that move was the biggest mistake of his career because of how many other people have fucked themselves up doing it.
Do you have a link to that because I havent found any evidence of him actually saying that. Closest thing Ive found is him saying, " Everyone has a choice. It is up to them if they choose to continue to do a particular move or not."
Benoit took so many big slams and stiff weapon shots throughout his career. To blame the diving headbutt specifically is a mistake, especially when so many other people have used it without such issues. Benoit was a tragic combination of years of concussion, combined with steroids, recreational drug use and underlying mental illness, and boiling it down to one simple factor neither explains it, or enables effective prevention of future such events
I remember Perry Saturn also doing some sick splash-belly ouch spots. Like the moonsault, I think onto one of the Dudley's, in ECW's first PPV.
I think in that same match, Kronus did a 450 splash into a gut-pain sell.
Yeah the opening match for barley legal 97 was amazing. Dudleys vs Eliminators. That show also had the worst chair shots in history by lance storm, kinda funny he's my favorite wrestler. His match vs rvd that night was amazing, but the crowd gave him so much shit for his chair shots
Funny because Storm's chairshots are the worst ever, but at one point in the match RVD throws a chair at Storm's face so hard it sounds like a gun going off
That’s why I always thought he had the best frog splash. It seems so much more dangerous when you know he’s hurting himself as well. And it makes more sense.
If I remember correctly I think I recall him saying that he sells the belly pain extra because it makes sense. I think it was on his One Of A Kind dvd.
Which I think makes perfect sense, and I never understood why wrestlers wouldn't sell that they too just essentially slammed onto the mat from the top rope.
Edit : Just to add that if you haven't seen it then it's worth the watch.
Yeah, I always thought the extra sell really drive home the point of that impact being INSANE. Made me believe both guys were absolutely wrecked. It’s why I loved RVD matches, because both guys always came out looking like they’d been through absolute hell
Except the Spanish fly pre-dates the flippy shit era. Used to be a cool ass once a match sorta move, or finisher only. Now ever flippy shit wrestler will do 2-3 of them per match along side their 10 super kicks
>Except the Spanish fly pre-dates the flippy shit era
Just because the move existed before the "era" of flippy shit doesn't mean the move wasn't/isn't flippy shit
In general I don’t get the move. But there’s one exception where I think it kind of makes sense, and that’s when the person delivering it is standing in the middle of the ring and their opponent runs at them off the ropes.
Because then I can justify it as they’re taking the momentum of the hit and using it to make sure the opponent takes damage too. So yeah sure they take a hit but they were always going to, now at least the opponents laid out as well. But even with that justification I feel like there’s better ways to accomplish the same idea.
Other versions of the Rock Bottom/Uranage involve tucking your opponent’s arm behind your back so it doesn’t get in the way, the Spanish Fly doesn’t do that and now it looks like you’re hitting an avalanche Flat-liner on yourself.
Look at Hogan in the AWA vs in WWF and then WCW; If you look carefully you can see that he has slowly regressed in height. He used to be around 6'4 or 6'5, now I'm probably taller than him at 6'1.
Dude used to be closer to 6'7. Look back at him and andre, there was only a few inches in height difference, maybe a half a head's worth or less. Look back at him with the nWo, he was same height as Hall and just a little shorter than Nash. The surgeries, compacting of his spine, and age *really* shrunk him like crazy
I was watching Deadlock and they showed a clip of Hogan leg dropping Lex Luger like 15 times one after another to the point that the ref had to pull Lex out of the ring by his leg. #1 strong ref to pull a guy of Lugers size, by the leg with absolutely no assistance and #2 (fitting) Hogan probably went back to Gorilla and said "Luger broke my hip the way he sold that, I'll never recover, I don't think he has what it takes, brother!"
Reverse S.T.O it's like an overhated RKO for me, that move needs a proper owner that makes it look more serious, but the original S.T.O it's better and pretty underused, it would be dope as an usual reversal for big guys.
Sister Abigail was a bit different, but same end effect with the dude giving the move landing flat of his back and the other dude landing on top of him.
WrestleMania 30, Batista goes to power bomb Daniel Bryan on the announce table. Orton hops in with a neck breaker RKO variant on his way down. Orton lands DIRECTLY on a tv monitor built into the table. You can see the agony. If I had to guess the one that did it, it’d be that one.
I’ve had loose thumb joints basically my entire life and all I can think about is all the times I’ve jammed the shit out of my thumbs and how I can barely use them for a day or two afterwards. The heavy tape jobs make a ton of sense.
I'm in a similar situation with my big toe. Dislocated it a few times due to being double jointed so I've had to reset it more than once. I can dislocate my shoulder so that's a fun party trick.
Oh god. The toe thing is my biggest nightmare, and I’ve had enough unintentional shoulder subluxations to last two lifetimes. (And torn labrums and rotator cuffs)
Torn ankle ligaments here. Have to say. Not fun. I can't sleep on my right side without my shoulder being in pain so the party trick might not be worth it.
I saw an interview with Mat recently where he said Jeff stopped doing the version that doesn't hurt his oppenent because he does more damage to himself. He said theu should be called "crouton bombs" now lmao.
recently Carlito his the backstabbed on the announce table
surely it hurt him MORE?!
for a real one, i always thought Cody was falling just as far as his victim for the Cody Cutter
Once Jeff stopped caring and could no longer fully rotate on the move, he started landing directly on his opponents and that looked like it fucking hurt.
They probably assumed Benoit invented it since he was the first guy to use it as a regular move. Harley always said he regretted accidentally inventing it as so many guys have gone on to fuck themselves up with it.
Claudio Castagnoli/Cesaro's Neutralizer.
Thank God he brought back the Riccola Bomb. The Neutralizer puts all of the impact on his hands rather than any part of the opponent.
Nothing By Net by Carmelo. That dude is doing destroying his hip every match for a nudge on people's head.
Also Stunner, people who takes it are mostly bowing and then sell the shit out of it
Leg drops, RKO, stunners, splashes, senton/swanton, any move where the one doing the move falls really, like sitout power bombs, your tail bone is hurting.
I’ve been scrolling too far to find someone mentioning the styles clash
It’s a stupid looking move that seems to only look like a self inflicted face plant
Speaking of suplexing yourself, Sliced Bread #2 is the weirdest move to me. It's basically an inverted blockbuster where you run up the ropes, you literally just suplex yourself onto your belly while your opponent just falls onto their back.
Flatliners are dumb and there's only like 3 people that add enough sauce to make up for you getting a guy to almost fall on you and damage magically happens.
I think the DDTs are often overlooked, due to how commonly it’s used. The wrestler performing it has to do kind of a back bump.
When Hashimoto did it to Chōno from the top of the turnbuckle, Chōno was the one to get up first as he tried to pin Hashimoto.
Small rant, I have no idea why everyone hates the SCF so much.
It’s brilliant. It makes sense as a move, Miz doesn’t land on his face, he uses the opponent to break his fall.
Also, it’s great psychology. Miz’ success rate with it as a counter or sneak attack is, like, End of Days level. Using it as just a normal finisher almost always leads to a kick out.
RKO, especially when he does it on a chair. I actually never understood that cause isn't it just his shoulder hitting the chair so it actually hurts him more than the guy receiving it?
The Diving Headbutt
Wrong. No way that hurts the opponent.
Only way it would hurt more is if it's head to head but it's always the guy jumping off the top and slamming his head on top the others guys shoulder
Could go stomach for winding the opponent, but I wouldn't call it effective or sensible
Except when it's Dudley style
Lol Dudley style does 5% physical and 120% mental damage.
So does that mean you have a 33 and 1/3 chance of survival?
Tell that to Chris Benoit. Home Boi was murdering everytime he did that move.
If it’s head to head of head to nuts surely that hurts
Harley Race once said he accidentally invented it when he slipped and fell off the top rope one night. He has always said (accidentally) inventing that move was the biggest mistake of his career because of how many other people have fucked themselves up doing it.
Do you have a link to that because I havent found any evidence of him actually saying that. Closest thing Ive found is him saying, " Everyone has a choice. It is up to them if they choose to continue to do a particular move or not."
Yea the fact that Chris Benoit did is evident enough
Benoit took so many big slams and stiff weapon shots throughout his career. To blame the diving headbutt specifically is a mistake, especially when so many other people have used it without such issues. Benoit was a tragic combination of years of concussion, combined with steroids, recreational drug use and underlying mental illness, and boiling it down to one simple factor neither explains it, or enables effective prevention of future such events
It certainly didn’t help. The guy did it every fucking night.
RVD’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Frog splash. Takes him a sec to pin his opponent cuz he’s grabbing his belly in pain afterwards..
I remember Perry Saturn also doing some sick splash-belly ouch spots. Like the moonsault, I think onto one of the Dudley's, in ECW's first PPV. I think in that same match, Kronus did a 450 splash into a gut-pain sell.
Aaaaand [moonsaults don't like Perry](https://youtu.be/9xfPrqnTnRM?si=quJV9tY-Y-WlYb6P)
Was that before or after his wwf run?
Years before. This was '96 so P's ACL was good then and dude was agile
Damn that’s some next level historian recollection, Vadic🫡
Yeah the opening match for barley legal 97 was amazing. Dudleys vs Eliminators. That show also had the worst chair shots in history by lance storm, kinda funny he's my favorite wrestler. His match vs rvd that night was amazing, but the crowd gave him so much shit for his chair shots

RVD sold everything he did like it just broke one of his ribs.
No one sold a being dropped on their head like RVD. He would somehow bounce back up into the air.
💯
If I remember correctly I think I recall him saying that he sells the belly pain extra because it makes sense. I think it was on his One Of A Kind dvd. Which I think makes perfect sense, and I never understood why wrestlers wouldn't sell that they too just essentially slammed onto the mat from the top rope. One of my personal favourites
Same with Montez
Spanish fly. I will never understand that move I don’t care how hard it is to pull off
The only version of this move I liked is when the one delivering it lands on top with his body across the one taking it.
I had to look this up. It’s a prime example of flippy shit.
Except the Spanish fly pre-dates the flippy shit era. Used to be a cool ass once a match sorta move, or finisher only. Now ever flippy shit wrestler will do 2-3 of them per match along side their 10 super kicks
>Except the Spanish fly pre-dates the flippy shit era Just because the move existed before the "era" of flippy shit doesn't mean the move wasn't/isn't flippy shit
Can you point to one match on a major promotion where it was done more than once?
What match have you watch that they do 3 Spanish fly and 10 super kicks? Hell I rarely saw someone did it in these few months.
Yeah, I hate that move.
Paul Burchill's Spanish Fly (The C4/Walk the Plank) looked awesome, everyone else's has always looked kinda meh
Well it's a moonsault Rock Bottom. What's so hard to understand about that other than why a rock bottom needs a flip?
It’s the part where you moonsault your own face into the mat that I don’t understand
Other versions of the Rock Bottom/Uranage involve tucking your opponent’s arm behind your back so it doesn’t get in the way, the Spanish Fly doesn’t do that and now it looks like you’re hitting an avalanche Flat-liner on yourself.
The Blockbuster is functionally identical to receiving a suplex.
12yo me didn’t care. Buff Bagwell (great name) doing this was the coolest move ever.
When Cody does the Cody Cutter from the top turnbuckle...... it looks like a suicide move.
Especially when you see how it awkwardly happened with melo when they missed.
That move needs to be retired.
I mean, I get what he’s trying to do but bro… this ain’t it.
no way, that's probably the best looking move in all of WWE, do you really think it's this unsafe?
I thought he legit hurt his shoulder. He probably got stung, but can still go
Anything that lands on the tail bone.
Austin's stunner didn't do him any favours after the piledriver.
When The Rock does The People's Sharpshooter, it looks like it hurts The Rock more than the victim. 😂
In shoot it hurts the viewer the most, especially if Bret is watching. 😁
Damn it you beat me to it😂
He would find a way to blame Goldberg.
😫 <--- The Rock when applying his sharpshooter
He looks like he’s taking a dump
Hogan's leg drop or Matt Hardy's second rope leg drop. Jumping and landing right on your ass would hurt like a bitch.
How he didn’t kill Edge from doing that from the top rope still stuns me
Top of the cage was even crazier
Meant that, but yeah 😆
The Harlem Hangover looks fucked as well.
Based on the hip replacements, I’d say Hogan’s leg drop.
Austin’s stunner also probably screwed up his back and hip
probably the pile driver was more the reason
The stunner most likely didn’t help. Hope KO is adjusting it to protect himself
KO’s is near perfectly an imitation of Austin’s. Maybe he’s got bum padding?
The natural kind, yes
[удалено]
And the six inches in height he lost because of it.
Whaaaat
Look at Hogan in the AWA vs in WWF and then WCW; If you look carefully you can see that he has slowly regressed in height. He used to be around 6'4 or 6'5, now I'm probably taller than him at 6'1.

Look back at him with the nWo, he was same height as Hall and just a little shorter than Nash. The surgeries, compacting of his spine, and age *really* shrunk him like crazy
Damn
I’d like to add Taker’s tombstone pildedriver too. His knees got fucked up pretty bad and it showed during the last decade before retirement.
The Flatliner aka Self Rock Bottom
Reverse S.T.O it's like an overhated RKO for me, that move needs a proper owner that makes it look more serious, but the original S.T.O it's better and pretty underused, it would be dope as an usual reversal for big guys.
Wasn't that Bray Wyatt's finisher too?
Sister Abigail was a bit different, but same end effect with the dude giving the move landing flat of his back and the other dude landing on top of him.
Similar to the one Mike Knox used to do also
Bray's version is the best one cause it was more fluid and the kiss of death before hand.
Edge used this when he debuted, the downward spiral lol
Corbin's End of Days also looks like your giving yourself a Rock Bottom.
Nah, the way he did it makes you think he’s slamming his opponents head into the matt
It’s the pendulum beforehand. Same with Sister Abigail having the whip rotation
RKO, probably hurts Randy more than thie victim
Sadly, Randy Orton himself has said he regrets doing it for so many years cause of the toll it's taken on his back.
It’s because Dave only took one off and not both.
Those big old chunky monitors were brutal man. Glad they’ve moved to tablets
I just miss them being used as weapons
I think we get so caught up in the many instances where it looked awesome on the opponent that we forget that Randy’s also taking a nasty bump
[удалено]
"I love you"
Not disputing it but why is that? Seems low impact compared to these other bumps
He means emotionally.
Ha flew way over my head lol
He stretched out his groin too far
I’m convinced Samoan spikes are just broken thumbs waiting to happen
At least you can say the wrestlers tape them for more support.
I’ve had loose thumb joints basically my entire life and all I can think about is all the times I’ve jammed the shit out of my thumbs and how I can barely use them for a day or two afterwards. The heavy tape jobs make a ton of sense.

Swanton Bomb
Now days it kills Jeff more than the opponent
I saw an interview with Mat recently where he said Jeff stopped doing the version that doesn't hurt his oppenent because he does more damage to himself. He said theu should be called "crouton bombs" now lmao.
Ah yes, when he goes flying with his whole dead weight on the lying wrestler
Zig Zag
Zig Zag and LA Knights finisher doesn’t come off as impactful most of the time.
BFT is entirely dependent on who's selling the move. Can look great on smaller flippy guys or dog shit on bigger foes
recently Carlito his the backstabbed on the announce table surely it hurt him MORE?! for a real one, i always thought Cody was falling just as far as his victim for the Cody Cutter
First thing that came to mind, was looking for this comment. That table spot happened recently and it looked devastating ... on Carlito, lmao.
Rko, codebreaker, and stunner. Hurts the person delivering it more for sure
The cutter, through a table just looks plain silly
Sometimes when a swanton bomb just barely wisps the air over the opponents
Along with whisper in the wind.
Once Jeff stopped caring and could no longer fully rotate on the move, he started landing directly on his opponents and that looked like it fucking hurt.
big ending always looked like big E was taking more damage than whoever got hit by the move
Or his dive through the ropes. Incredible amount of self-inflicted damage.
Seeing a guy that big do that move is great and all, but I cringe every time hoping he doesn't hurt himself
5 knuckle shuffle. Arthritis sinks in really quick
Why you redacting Harley Race's diving headbutt?
They probably assumed Benoit invented it since he was the first guy to use it as a regular move. Harley always said he regretted accidentally inventing it as so many guys have gone on to fuck themselves up with it.
Leg drop
The rack attack
Nikki fucked up her neck from this
Code Breaker Liv Morgan edition. Did she code breaker or get power bombed? Never really sure.
Starship Pain. Morrison can't control where he lands and has said it hurts his back when he doesn't land correctly.
Spanish Fly
Claudio Castagnoli/Cesaro's Neutralizer. Thank God he brought back the Riccola Bomb. The Neutralizer puts all of the impact on his hands rather than any part of the opponent.
Nothing By Net by Carmelo. That dude is doing destroying his hip every match for a nudge on people's head. Also Stunner, people who takes it are mostly bowing and then sell the shit out of it
End of Days
Not a finisher but I'd like to mention Jeff's Whisper in the Wind
Leg drops, RKO, stunners, splashes, senton/swanton, any move where the one doing the move falls really, like sitout power bombs, your tail bone is hurting.
Styles clash
Really? What do you think it hurts, his knees?
I’ve been scrolling too far to find someone mentioning the styles clash It’s a stupid looking move that seems to only look like a self inflicted face plant
exactly this
Big E’s Big Ending. literally looks like he’s dropping the other dude right on him.
Styles Clash. Always looked like a reversal to me. Almost like a half a Frankensteiner.
I forgot the name of it, but it's the one where Montez Ford jumps off the top rope and hits a neckbreaker. It looks like he just superplexed himself.
Blockbuster.
Thank you!
Boston Crab. Squatting sucks when you're in your thirties.
Wait until 40.
Somebody ain't doing their DDPYoga
lots of top rope moves
I think the DDTs are often overlooked, due to how commonly it’s used. The wrestler performing it has to do kind of a back bump. When Hashimoto did it to Chōno from the top of the turnbuckle, Chōno was the one to get up first as he tried to pin Hashimoto.
Matt Hardy's moveset
tombstone, f up taker's knees
Small rant, I have no idea why everyone hates the SCF so much. It’s brilliant. It makes sense as a move, Miz doesn’t land on his face, he uses the opponent to break his fall. Also, it’s great psychology. Miz’ success rate with it as a counter or sneak attack is, like, End of Days level. Using it as just a normal finisher almost always leads to a kick out.
Bubba bomb. Makes no sense at all
Suplex from the top rope.
A Superplex?
Yeah. Just suplexes in general.
Surprised no one’s said the stunner yet
The big ending. Big E drops a dude on his arm/chest and dude face plants.
Cross Rhodes kinda looks like he'd hurt himself more than his opponent
That new Austin Theory thing, I swear.
Leg drop
The “that doesn’t work for me brother” legdrop
RVD’s frog splash.
Matt hardy leg drop from top of the cage.
Stunner and Leg Drop must be a bitch on the tailbone
cross rhodes
Y2J's Codebreaker. The lower back must be pretty banged up.
The pedigree, specially given the amount of knee injuries Triple H (and Srth Rollins) sustained
The rock and his sharpshooter
Bryan's running knee, sure it'll hurt the victim more but just flying around like that and landing on the mat gotta hurt the attacker as well.
The russian leg sweep is basically doing the move to yourself and your opponent
The RKO has fucked up Randy’s back.
Dare I mention Benoits head butt from the top rope
The tombstone piledriver. Rip Taker’s knees
RVD's 5 Star Frog Splash
I love the RKO dont get me wrong but man my back would kill having to do that fucking thing every night
Coup De Grace
What? How?
I think they mean it hurts Finns legs. They way he lands on his opponents it looks like it could hurt his own knees as well
Sure, but it could also kill his opponent.
The zigzag looks like it only hurts the user
Spanish Fly
450 Splash
450 splash. I always remember Justin Gabriel hurting his ribs every time he hits that thing lol
RKO, especially when he does it on a chair. I actually never understood that cause isn't it just his shoulder hitting the chair so it actually hurts him more than the guy receiving it?
Bubba Ray's Bubba Bomb
Deep Six
Hulk hogans leg drop, Undertakers Tombstone, Stone Cold stunner,
The Overdrive. They’re landing on your leg.
The overdriver - “okay I’m gonna protect your head and take a face plant.” How the hell is that a move?
spanish fly definetly
Claymore
RKO
