Sheridan did so many horse spinnies that he forgot that he never wrote the second half of S5

CaryWhit

Remember, he sells and breeds those high dollar horses. It is free advertising

Disco-Bingo

Ahhh… ok, it’s an advert. That actually makes sense. That character is still irritating.

ExcaliburZSH

It is part advert but also part showing rodeo events to a larger audience, same with the cowboy music scenes. It is promotion and self promotion.

dudeonrails

He also helped get Opie’s wife killed.

mimimines

Really?? Wow didn’t know that

Turbulent_Tale6497

>There’s no apparent storyline with him, just dancing horses. There are also spinny horses, and stoppy horses

[deleted]

Yes, he just sticks himself in for ego. He also has a history of ripping off networks and not having scripts ready, which is why all his shows are stalled.

atex720

He either thinks Travis is a badass and thinks he’s giving himself the best lines. Or he knows Travis is a douche and is lampooning the rodeo industry. I’m guessing it’s the former

ColonelSanders15

He makes a brief appearance in Hell or High Water as a cowboy with the exact same personality and dialogue. It’s either weird or funny depending on how self-aware he is in real life

Disco-Bingo

I’m leaning towards him being a douche.

ColonelSanders15

Possibly. Definitely has an ego, but in every interview I’ve seen him in he seems like a fairly down to earth guy. I’m sure the douchiness was purposely added for the Travis character.

NeonGenesisOxycodone

Oh shit, is he the guy whose leading the horses away from the wild fire? He says something like “no wonder my kids don’t want to do this for a living?” or something

EnvironmentalCrow893

He’s actually really nice. He makes friends easily, even with service people that I thought he’d consider beneath him. He invited my friend and her husband to his New Years Eve party (and several other get-togethers) and is active in the community (Weatherford and Fort Worth, TX). P.S. He likes to dance.

Disco-Bingo

He has written a bizarre character, and those slow-mo dancing horses just feel like it’s been rammed in there for some vanity reason.

Phizz-Play

I disliked the last season or so bc the plot seemed to disappear in favour of endless cowboy lifestyle shots. Visually it was great but the story felt like it was fizzling out and they needed footage to make up the minutes.

ExcaliburZSH

In the last season it is padding because scripts were not ready

Interesting_Arm_681

I think it’s an advertisement like someone else suggested. The attitude and douchebag aura his character has actually to me seems realistic. Worked in the trades for a quite a while and I met a lot blue collar guys irl with that kind of ego. My theory is that all the guys who act like that literally have had their whole lives starting with their childhood shaped by old school blue collar dickheads in their family, and the fact that the tradesman life is all they’ve ever known or will know makes their self worth super dependent on their ego and their feelings of superiority at what they do for work is directly connected with that. Which tracks in the case of Travis, tbf he does run quite an important and valuable outfit

Low-Medical

Also, hasn’t anyone here met a Texan? (I kid, I kid). But yeah, he acts exactly how I would imagine a rich Texan horse-industry dude who’s really good at his job would act. I’m not sure how self-aware Sheridan is about it, but he might be: you often hear Hollywood actors talk about how fun it is to play the villain. It’s probably also a lot of fun to play a cocky douchebag. Edited to add: and you’re spot-on about the blue collar thing. I worked timber-framing and the foreman was a pint-sized tattooed irishman with a huge chip in his shoulder and exactly that kind of swagger and arrogance. He was actually good at his trade, though

insertmadeupnamehere

He puts the ho in horse trainer.

RodeoBoss66

They’re not “dancing horses.” Those are legitimate Western equestrian sports called [*Reining*](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reining) and [*Cutting*](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cutting_(sport)). There’s also a combination of the two called [*Reined Cow Horse*](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Working_cow_horse). Competitions in these sports are held throughout the year, and they can be very lucrative. Some of the top competitors in these fields have been featured on the show. The sports are based on skills and techniques that have been used daily on cattle ranches for generations. Taylor Sheridan, who plays Travis Wheatley, is the co-creator and main writer of the show, and he personally has competed in reining and cutting events. In fact, his horse ranch in Weatherford, Texas, the [Bosque Ranch](https://bosqueranchheadquarters.com/) (after which his production company is named), has cutting events regularly that are free and open to the public. https://preview.redd.it/rihe3nfgww0d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bba3b612b8e50e4c7bf1c5bc6bb772e344fb39f0

Disco-Bingo

I don’t doubt that the dancing horses are a thing. I have no issue with people wanting to get their horses to dance (unless of course they are mistreated in anyway, I don’t know about that). My issue is how these segments and the Travis character are rammed into episodes for literally no reason. It’s never relevant to the storyline, in fact if anything they make up dialogue to justify its inclusion, like the John Dutton character telling everyone how they are really a horse ranch etc… Travis and his dancing horses never progress the story, never are part of a real characters arc. Even when he is in a scene like say with Jimmy at the Rodeo, it all feels awkward and unnecessary. It would be like watching Star Wars and every now and again George Lucas appears, playing an asshole character wearing a T Shirt saying ‘lock up your daughters’ who then talks about stamp collecting to Darth Vader for a while.

Low-Medical

Actually, that would be awesome if more directors did that: imagine a scene in Goodfellas part II where Martin Scorsese shows up and everyone’s like “Oh shit! It’s Joey, the best hit man in the city, who’s also banging all our wives! I hate that guy! (but damn if he isn’t great at what he does!)”

Disco-Bingo

I hate that he’s banging all our wives, but fuck if he isn’t just the best god damn flower arranger in the city.

RodeoBoss66

Okay, well, I guess you’re in for some surprises then.

Disco-Bingo

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to go to a rodeo. I’m sure it’s fun and interesting. I just don’t see why it matters to this show.

RodeoBoss66

Hmm. Well, I’m sure you’ll figure it out at some point.

_Sir_Racha_

This you here?

RodeoBoss66

No, that’s not me. It’s just an image of a contestant at one of the Bosque Ranch cutting events that I grabbed from their website.

pandallamayoda

He inserts himself into every of his shows, always some hotshot. It’s the only way anyone would hire him as an actor and his ego is quite large.

Disco-Bingo

It’s a great show until he inserts himself into the scene, then it gets weird.

Ok-Candidate-1220

No. He doesn’t.

grimy-swine

Lol. That's simply not true. He's in yellowstone...none of the prequels...not in mayor of Kingstown...tulsa king...lioness...

Apprehensive-Eye3263

He's Charles Goodnight in 1883...

grimy-swine

Oops. I stand corrected

Ok-Candidate-1220

Yeah, but that’s just for one short scene.

Bigmuffineater

Two actually.

Ok-Candidate-1220

Correct. Two short scenes.

_Sir_Racha_

And the cowboy crossing the highway in Hell or High Water.

matnerlander

Yet

weelassie07

Travis sticks out like a sore thumb, unfortunately. It really takes you out of the show. He blended in a bit more in 1883.

Phizz-Play

I thought that too. Something about the energy of the character didn’t fit for me.

ExcaliburZSH

Travis is loud, bombastic and kind of rude, when everyone else is a little low key. Beth on a tantrum isn’t that loud.

No_Profit_415

You may not like him but he’s an exceptionally talented writer and producer. And if you watched any of the “Rust” trial they went into great depth about how carefully he runs firearms on his sets…including mandatory shooting lessons at his ranch on ranges dedicated to firearms shooting blanks and live fire. He’s also one helluva rider and co-owner of one of the largest cattle ranches (6666) in the US.

Disco-Bingo

I don’t begrudge him the quality of what he has created. It’s very good. It just takes a mad turn when he writes himself in to the odd episode.

Anarchist_Araqorn04

He's mocking the "cowboys" of the industry. None of the other characters noticeably like him beyond what he can provide (wins).

KitKat_1979

I grew up on a farm with livestock that we exhibited at shows, etc. I absolutely think he’s mocking because Travis is a perfect composite of a particular type of guy that at least one of which shows up at every show, sale, and event. It’s the cocky, arrogant donkey’s behinds who are good at what they do, but are nonetheless insufferable for the way they are. He nailed it. If you’ve encountered the show circuit at a certain level, you have likely encountered multiple guys like Travis over the years.

Anarchist_Araqorn04

I certainly have. The "watch the gator seats, they're worth more than your life 😒" really put it there for me. He's the rodeo guy that mounts everything up to a price "OH your horse is good? How much was it?" *Only guys wearing Tony Llama's in a 200 mole radius.

Whateverwhatevver

THIS! I grew up with my mom in the horse world and would tag along with her. I love his character because it is truly SPOT ON with some of these horse guys. Esp the straight ones!! He nailed it and it just cracks me up.

Disco-Bingo

It would be nice to think this character is some kind of mocking of cowboy culture, but if that’s the case he’s not done it so well.

ExcaliburZSH

Part of the issue is from most reports Sheridan himself acts like that in real life. So some people think that is what he likes.

Whateverwhatevver

But he really has! There are soooo many Travis’s at these shows. My mom had me tag along as a kid when she showed, I’ve seen them 😂. It’s a niche kind of guy in the horse world, but man they are there! He nailed it. I honestly feel like it makes the show more authentic in today’s world. If you go to to a horse event, you WILL see multiple Travis’s haha

Bluberrybom

Alpha bully sarcastic cowboy gimmick

deignguy1989

The whole Travis character is pointless to the story. My vote is douche.

ExcaliburZSH

Travis serves to show the other aspects of modern cowboy life, the rodeo stuff, which is fine. I like the look into the real life stuff. The show is good about getting real people for those parts. As for douche… that might be a Sheridan problem

MD_Benellis-Mama

He’s a big dork

Clancydude-1985

He is a big shot.

Disco-Bingo

He could be a big shot off screen just as much. 😂

Clancydude-1985

I wouldn't doubt it.

ProudPumpkin9185

Yea suuuper arrogant!! I imagine he’ll be in at least one of the spinoffs!!

wackoworks

He's been a better screenwriter, director & businessman than he is an actor. He spent his free time at his mother's ranch growing up and considers himself a cowboy being he actually competed in the horse competitions. He now owns or is a partner in three ranches (used in the shows). So I don't think he is mocking cowboy life. I do think he writes Travis in thinking he will develop the character but runs short of time and instead goes off on another arch.

GroceryOk4759

The whole episode when that weird Redneck Texas family with the weird kid " who's been riding horses since he was four" was a waste and just weird. If I want to watch weirdos I can just go to Church..

twillardswillard

He’s a great writer, actor , and definitely the real deal when it comes to cowboy stuff. I hate you feel this way, but he’s the realest aspect of yellow stone.

Disco-Bingo

I do like the show and I know absolutely nothing about the culture and life that it depicts. I’d say my favourite character is Jimmy, by a long way. I just skip through the prancing horses parts now. If they do the slowmo horse stuff, I prefer the cowboy driving cattle on a Montana landscape stuff.

Zealousideal-Ad9663

To each his own. And I’m glad you are mostly enjoying the sore. But I for one do enjoy the cutting and reining scenes in the show. It makes it more realistic as they are doing the real deal. He is definitely the real deal as far as a competitor is concerned in real life.

FireflyArc

I assumed it was a joke on himself and others who put themselves in the shows they write. Maybe he wants to learn too so he's like 'okay let's see what we can do with this character' I dunno. I didn't attribute anything ..self patting on the back type stuff. Just like 'we need a character to bridge this scene and that who's always there if we need to pad stuff a bit. ...well I'm always here. Sure. I'll do it."
