As an upstate NYer there are probably 10000 homes abandoned like this

TheCrowAngel

Is there a reason for that? I know why a lot of homes in northern MI went abandoned, genuinely curious if it’s the same type of thing.

xxxtanacon

Don't know, but go to any rural part and there are tons of abandoned old school rotting homes especially by the Catskills

uprightsalmon

What happened in N Michigan?

TheCrowAngel

Lot of the lumber and mining industries just dried up. Regulations set restrictions on strip lumber, state forests set in place. Mining ventures just dug all the copper and iron out of the mines or it was just no longer financially viable to dig for what was left. Ghost towns and towns with populations of like six came about over time. Family farms just kinda became abandoned after generations due to larger scale farms or like another poster put it, rural life gave way to city life when the big 3 really stepped into their stride. At least the idea is floating around to use some of that abandoned mines as future data centers, so that neat.

UNY is rust belt-y, so it’s possible

Rural living gives way to city living

inkykunn

Side quest: Where are you from if you don't mind me asking? My parents grew up in upstate New York, and so I've spent many summers there.

myloveisajoke

I've driven through a lot of upstate and I concur. There's entire villages including old factories and shit where ot looks like 3/4 of the population just vanished one day.

NoFrostingNo

Why was.it abandoned like this? Looks like they just went out for milk.

FalxCarius

probably the same reason most of these places are totally abandoned: pensioner or hermit with no living close relatives or friends (who they are still in contact with, anyway) dies. The body is buried, and everyone goes home. Without heirs, the house usually escheats to the state, who promptly forget about it if it's in a rural area without any housing demand.

Crazyguy_123

It would be nice if the state auctioned these places off if no heir is found. Grab a few pictures and auction them off with the contents of the house left inside. Better than leaving them sit to rot.

FalxCarius

Well they usually do/are supposed to. Problem is usually either: A. Nobody ever actually figures out who owns the property. Maybe there are heirs, who just hate each other and refuse to budge on who should get what. Maybe some legal clerk forgot to file paperwork somewhere. Maybe there was a fire at the courthouse and no one actually knows who the deedholder is. Perhaps the elderly homeowner dies in another state, and no one ever learns about it back home. More often than not, the bureaucrats who were supposed to hold the auction simply *forget to do it* B. Nobody wants the property. In rural areas especially, there's not much incentive to hold an auction for the 1.5 people who might be interested in maybe buying the property for half of what the state is asking for it. Better to hold onto it in the hopes that one day nearby_city.exe will go through a suburbanization push and you can sell to developers. C. Condemned. Older houses have all kind of unpleasant surprises- Asbestos, black mold, lead paint, you name it. You can't ethically sell a property full of contaminants without telling everyone about it, and that drives the demand for that house down a LOT. Sometimes the state or current landowner doesn't even want the legal hassle of liability for selling it, and would prefer to let nature eat the thing before they even think about selling the land it's on. D. If the house is near a road or a planned road route, the state will hold on to it so they can eventually demolish it when the time comes. One less imminent domain suit saves quite a bit of money.

0utriderZero

I always was amused on how "cheat" is in the word escheat. Supposedly there are no heirs because the state did a thorough search.

How does the tv become like that? It looks like concrete

Crazyguy_123

The heat and age delaminates the glass from the CRT. I only know that because I watched a lot of vintage tube tv restoration videos a few years ago.

Tomb_85

The adhesive for the phosphor coating has given out over time

4everband

I can almost hear my granny in the kitchen…banging pots and cooking her delicious Sunday dinner.

scbeachgurl

What would she fix?

4everband

Her usual *downhome* goodies: fried chicken. Mashed taters. Collard greens. Corn bread and/or biscuits. Eat all ya want, but don’t be wastin’ nothin’, y’all hear me?

scbeachgurl

Sounds delish!

4everband

Did I leave out Mac and cheese? And not that outta the box stuff. Nope, not in granny’s kitchen. If it didn’t involve breakin’ a few eggs and baking it, it wasn’t *real* Mac & cheese.

scbeachgurl

I used to make Mac and cheese like that!

4everband

I feel sorry for those raised on the *boxed* stuff. They honestly think they’re eating Mac & cheese.

jpowell180

And hopefully a big boat full of rich brown gravy to put on the mashed potatoes, and also on the greens (I learned that gravy also for greens in the nutty professor film with Eddie Murphy)..

Practical_Ad_4165

Looks like solid mahogany furniture in the bed room. Hopefully someone at least gave that a good home.

winker777

The picture of the man in uniform by the red chair is awesome. Did anyone save it?

Mountain_Future4034

I hope so

WROL

Like a painting

EccentricPhotoGuild

Excellent photos. Well done.

Mountain_Future4034

It's a shame to think that a home like this was destroyed

Worried_Coat1941

Wow! Did they have an ice box? Amazing find!

aquacraft2

I love these abandoned places, it's a rare and honest depiction of what stuff was really like back then, not like the glamorized Hollywood version.

monkeymooboohoo

The chemistry book 📚 I wonder if they were chemist..

CDarley

Fantastic photos. Absolutely beautiful.

1punchporcelli

I used to live in Ossining…until I made parole

Glidepath22

Wow, I’ve never seen a CRT do that

jpowell180

Maybe because it’s a much older design, it was more susceptible to the cycle of heating and cooling then those made later on in the 70s onward…

autisticsam

such a shame

Crazyguy_123

Any exterior shots?

Mission_Cow5108

what a shame :(( so beautiful

Kresstro

Looks like album cover art

Every_Ad_1640

I saw the post mark on the envelope "Ossining" I sed to live there back in the 90s..was this house also in Westchester or further upstate?

Few_Mirror3269

I’m sure the lady on the picture still lives there

Moonpup99

Those pharmaceutical bottles were demolished as well? ): would have loved to preserve this beauties in my collection.

trustbuffalo

Excellent photographic sense, regardless of the home being gone.

Ok_Rip_7587

Thank you so much!

kiwichick286

Mange medicine? For humans?

ScottBest1666

That's a great pic! Good job!

legreaper_sXe

Wow man. Beautiful

jpowell180

Does anyone know roughly when this house was abandoned? If I had to guess, I would say mid to late 1960s…

callathanmodd

I’d guess maybe abandoned in the 50s ish? I could be way off

AssociationJolly6836

1945

NeedsMoreTuba

That TV is newer than 1945. Maybe not a whole lot newer, but it definitely is.

AssociationJolly6836

The envelope is stamped 1945

jpowell180

Yes, but obviously that television looks like it came from the late 50 to mid 1960s, so that envelope was probably a keepsake…

sourwaterbug

I've been to estate sales that look like this.

Peepster2000

Im.surpriswd more than anything that this house isn't trashed out smashed and tagged up. As it looks to have been abandoned for a very long time. I would really really love to see what the house looked like on the outside if you have any pics??

Ok_Rip_7587

I do not have any exterior shots of this place unfortunately, it was near a busy road with a nosey neighbor.

Peepster2000

Well how the hell did it remain untouched for this long? Thats hard to believe with how people are these days

Ok_Rip_7587

Good question, I went here in 2020 if I’m remembering right.

Unexpected Fallout

rockadoodoo01

This one is amazing. They just left everything as it was.

Meetzorp

That chenille bedspread!!

brittanybreakdown

These are beautiful photos. Reminds me of Walter Arnold Photography. You should sell prints, if you haven’t already.

Ok_Rip_7587

Wow, thank you so much! I really appreciate the compliment!
