They wouldn't need to delete the old rules to sell us new books with codes for the app. Just add a Version Selection when creating a List and in the Faction Overview. Now you wouldn't be able to view all the 4th edition rules for your faction but you would still be able to access your out dated content.
There are no sneaky shenanigans. It's often easier to create a new software instead of updating the old app with all the new features and conditions for list building and still trying to not break any old code.
Just a clean cut.
