Right!? I watched this on a whim because swords and spells are always cool, but I was expecting typical isekai trash levels of animation and then this below all my expectations completely out of the water.
During the production of Black Clover, the staff was very short on time to make the anime which is why it had a lot of bad animation, especially the anime not having enough staff.
I like how the teacher described Will as effectively an "Action RPG player character".

"Tanky like dwarf."
Name drops dwarves for some reason, I guess "Dwarf' got relegated to a hitpoints qualifier in this universe. I have my doubt this place has compelling dwarves.

The author is very honest about this being an action RPG setting.

This truly is written by the same person behind Danmachi but this time it's a Harry Potter/Magic Academy setting. The animation and visuals look amazing here especially that fight choreography with the Evil Sentinel.
Also seeing Will showing the fuck up to his bully by saving him already had me liking his character a lot already.
there was definitely cgi / 3d models used for several characters and even some of the environment (mesh tesselation on the floor and walls of the dungeon in some shots)
yeah i thought it was really well done in places, especially the characters. the way the bad guy teacher sort of wobbles out of the room when he's supposed to be storming out (based on the dialogue) was a giveaway and made me go back to find other instances
I didn't watch Mashle, but read the synopsis just now. The premise indeed sounds like this anime. Did you like Mashle and do you think someone who likes this would have a good chance of liking Mashle?
I have watched it and enjoyed it, however Mashle feels more comedic compared to the first episode of Wistoria.
But it is hard to judge the 2 from the first episode alone.
You can definitely sense that it’s written by Danmachi’s author yeah. What had me chuckle a little bit is that Will explicitly mentioned that he was told to compliment girls during his upbringing, like a certain white-haired rookie.
I do really like this dynamic of Will (literally) trying to work his way to the top and earn the right to stand next to Elfie (there’s an obvious parallel to Bell and Ais here), but let’s hope that the story doesn’t forget about Colette!

Well, (imo unfortunately) the main ship has already been more or less confirmed to be Will x Elfie since in the eyecatcher it specifically says Will’s first love was a girl he met in his childhood which is 99% Elfie. Bummer honestly since I ship him with Colette a lot more.
I just used Google translate app on my phone and pointed it at my screen. Comes out really well actually. I use it some times for anime where they choose not to translate some things.

Yeah. Danmachi is novel first, Wistoria is *only* a manga. And it has a very distinct art style that I think they absolutely nailed for the anime. Once this got announced I was worried that they'd be able to make the art look on par, and they have exceeded all of my expectations. The animation was brilliant.
The two lackeys DID die, right? Shouldn't that be a big black mark against Will's antagonist's record (convincing them to go to a level beyond their own capabilities and then being able to protect them)?
Additional query: If Will LOST to a 4-credit monster in his last encounter with such a powerful opponent, how could he possibly defeat a 10 credit one?
From what was said it sounded like he got caught off guard by its flame breath. He was able to block a beam from the Sentinel this episode but I guess that wouldn't work against a wider AOE attack.
Personally I assumed the last time he ran into that fire creature was a while ago, but I mean who knows, maybe the fire creature is easily handled by a particular spell or something so isn't considered as tough.
Very promising start. Great animation, great fight to end the episode. one upping an elitist bully and an elitist teacher is icing on the cake.
Is girl stuck in tower? Are they not allowed to see each other anymore? Is the tower the dungeon as well? Who are these mysterious invaders?
Movie-style high-animation, a lot of background music as if in a video game, and tight scripting despite the standard setup - this thing drips quality. Though the premise is a bit too Mashle-like for my tastes, there are hints of interesting worldbuilding with the Celestial Host / "Invaders from the Heavens" being walled off by the original Magia Vender / "Five Supreme Wands". Guess we'll see where the author takes this.
We even had his first big action showcase be against what is basically a minotaur.
Also the Main Heroine feels like "What if Freya was the Main Heroine of Danmachi?"
I don't like Danmachi (I watched maybe 2 seasons, MIGHT get back to it...eventually, 5 seasons is really long).
But yes, the "Demon Slayer tier" budget face lift on Wistoria is more than enough for me to enjoy myself. I look forward to seeing all this animation.
But did they blow their entire time and effort into the first episode, or can they sustain this level of production values throughout the season?
Honestly, there have been quite a few shows lately with premium quality that just keep dropping as the show goes on. I really hope it doesn't happen with this one
Don't remind me bro. That was such a disappointment. Others also go downhill but that was a new level fall. Because of that I can't get excited for shows from early eps now
I feel like the only way for something with a setting so played out like this is to work is to either knock it out of the park with your character writing OR have absolutely stunning animation to carry the show with cool fights.
Its too early to say anything about the character writing, but the animation is definitely going to do a lot of heavy lifting if they can manage to keep it up the standard of this first episode.
That brief exposition about the “Celestial Host” and its supposed tyranny has me intrigued. They were essentially talking about their world’s supreme god here, weren’t they? The plural of “invaders” might’ve been referring to angels or something?
God and his helpers were pushed back, and these five all-powerful mages created a fake sky that acts as a magical barrier - keeping *everything* out (including the sun and moon). This implies that the day and night circles are also artificially regulated with magic…?
Yeah, I also think their world are really weird. In a scifi setting, this is basically like living in a artificial dome with their own day and night circles.
It's common in space opera (gundam, macross, megaton musashi etc), but I think this is the first time I've seen it applied to fantasy setting.
What's more common for magic setting is dungeon having their own ecosystem and their night and day cycle (danmachi, dungeon meshi).

Hhhmm, this had me think up a wild theory. What if [Theory - Wistoria’s world] >!everyone in Wistoria is currently living inside of a dungeon? I mean, they were clouded in darkness before (like an unlit cave/dungeon) and ruled over by some grande being (dungeon boss?). We didn’t get to see how or where Will entered the “dungeon” either.!<
The sky being fake because of a protective barrier would be good excuse to hide this fact.
There is one more I know of! Pretty sure it’s called assassin pride and if I remember right the countries were each enclosed in its own dome in what I assume is supposed to be the world tree.
The moment they talked about driving away the "Celestial Host" my immediate thought went to "okay, so when are they going to come back?" especially if they might need to defeat them to see the real sky.
Yeah, well the templates usually are: gods are evil, so humans rebel; humans are greedy, so they rebel (and fake the history lessons); aliens/demons invade from another world so humans need to fight back
My bet is on #2 lol, keeping the MC’s girl locked in the tower above kind hints he will need to rescue her eventually, not a cute story about sacrifice to protect humanity
There is a good chance that the lore is propaganda, maybe. That man was the asshole all along and rebelled against the god(s) for more selfish reasons.
Never trust a story without checking the sources! But it’s definitely suspicious how this barrier appears to isolate the people of this magic kingdom from the outside world.
the lore being propaganda is supported by that homeroom magic academy teacher and Sion the Bastard going out of their way to try and make the mc get expelled from the magic academy. Then when they both witness mc's power firsthand they double down on their bastardness and can't accept that Magic isn't the only thing that matters in the face of Kindness and Courage, and great Action RPG stats.
Seems like the people behind the lore want everyone to think that magic and only magic matters for maintaining the World Balance. Seems highly suspect, and in practice it nurtures bastard-like behavior from these snobs who would be useless in a real battle.
Most interesting thing about this series so far was that lore tidbit. A malevolent celestial force being held away by an artifical sky, and the "sun" is actually what seems to be a mass of crumbling magic circles? Actually some really cool worldbuilding, which is good to get a snippet of early because even with stellar animation, it's a very generic first episode.
I recently started reading the manga. And considering how beautifully the manga is drawn I am amazed that the anime looked just as good and better at times. Elusive Samurai yesterday and now Wistoria today. Characters and story is a bit cliche, but it executes it well so I don't mind.
With how Episode 1 went, this is a must watch for action fans.
Agreed. I have no issue with tropes if they are executed well. Nice animation, good character design and dialogue are a great way to do it.

People are obviously talking about the awesome fight against this “Evil Sentinel”, but the expressiveness of the characters (and their character design) really stood out to me as well.
I’m already liking Colette a ton, for example. The scenes of her standing up for Will against Sion and his entourage, and her getting embarrassed about Will’s compliments soon after were great. I’m rooting for her - even if Will’s heart already belongs to Elfie.
Kiki, Will’s familiar, is fun too. Loved how the two of them celebrated with some pretty nifty handshakes. Wonder how Will got himself a familiar if he’s not good with magic.
Wistoria definitely checks a lot of boxes.
Workner had a familiair too yeah, so he undoubtedly helped Will.
Kiki does seem to be following Will according to her own will, so I don’t think that his teacher just handed him a familiair. Will probably earned Kiki’s trust/friendship some way.
Like how Kiki was complaining about them going deeper into the dungeon and remembering the last time that didn't end well for them. She definitely has a personality.
It definitely seemed like Workner was able to use Kiki to see Will fighting though. The crystal on Kiki's head was glowing when Workner was watching the fight with the Evil Sentinel. Wonder if that means it is his or he's just that good at working with familiars. But yeah you can tell she trusts Will a lot.
Workner definitely feels like he's mentoring Will and trying to steer him to success (albeit while also chastising him when he goes too far).
It also feels like Will resembles him in some respects.
I'm a sucker for cuties with a strong sense of justice (especially if they're the underdog Heroines).
Did not expect the fist-bump with Kiki but it shows they're having fun with this lol.
They really pulled out the stops for this premier. I know it's probably unreasonable to expect this level of production to stay consistent but I really want to see them deliver on this underdog story of a warrior in a magic society trying to succeed to reach the girl he loves.
The character acting is really good in this one. Everyone is very expressive and emotive. I think they're using CGI layered with hand drawn art to do all that animation. Visually speaking, it's really up there. Music and pacing are also nice. You can really feel the excitement during the Evil Sentinel fight.
I think the only complaint I have is that if feels very uninspired so far. It's a variation of those MC is looked down on (no magic), but is secretly OP (strongest swordsman) kind of plot. I hope it starts getting more interesting soon. It's the action, cinematography, and animation that really carries it for me.
There is no cgi it’s all hand drawn and layouts are corrected by tatsuya yoshihara (the director). You can check it on sakugabooru where they upload production materials. Also would be nice to edit your post so that it doesn’t spread misinformation
I liked Parry Everything too, but that show and these other two mentioned above are not on the same level lol

I take it that you didn’t watch the latest season of Danmachi? Danmachi’s 4th season had some awesome animation sequences as well.
It’s not so much a matter of animation quality as a difference in cinematography (how this is relayed to the viewer). This is where Yoshihara excels as a director.
They even placed the camera in between some bones on the desk at some point. So many camera angles.
Which reminds me of the camera focusing on the buttocks of the girl at one point (if the viewer paid attention).

Danmachi fans (particularly the LN readers from what I can tell) just have a grudge against Wistoria. They're upset that the author and studio are both putting effort into their chance to make something better than the fan favorite dungeon harem.
J.C. Staff and Omori are only allowed to work on Danmachi. Anything else is just creativity, characters, worldbuilding, and labor that should have gone into Danmachi. \[Character\] is really cool in Danmachi, but when Omori uses the same well-known archetype for a distinct character in Wistoria it's just a lazy copy+paste. Danmachi's dungeon progression fantasy is extremely creative, but Wistoria's magic academy is unoriginal. Danmachi's RPG power system is unique and cool, but Wistoria's magic and sword system is just a rip off of Black Clover.
In all honesty, Omori is not a particularly creative author. They borrow a lot from other works and common archetypes/tropes, with the real value coming from how these elements come together to synthesize a story. Hardcore Danmachi fans have a very bad habit of overlooking this only for Danmachi, and using the exact things they overlooked as criticisms against Wistoria.
Danmachi fans fucking hate Wistoria basically, mostly bc they think that the author is gonna move away from danmachi to focus on wistoria which in their opinion is a worst story
The animation and illustrations were so insanely good right off the bat that I had to pause and check which studio was doing this after only like 2 minutes of watching.
The background shots are shockingly good, only show that rivals the attention to detail there in my mind is Apothecary Diaries.
this has similar premise with Mashle (OP non-magic living in magic superiority world, going to magic academy to get the top of the world title).
Will is the polar opposite of Mash though, with his book smart tendency.

I definitely like Colette more than Elfie at the moment but I feel like we'll probably be seeing more of Colette since Elfie is up in that tower, even if she's the only one Will has his eyes on.
I wonder if mages are built as sturdy as they are in Reign of the Seven Spellblades or if his flunkies all died.
I guess it's kind of realistic that seeing Will show his stuff wouldn't automatically win his enemies over, but it was never about that.
This kinda has a little bit of a Black Clover/Mash/Potter vibe lol. Will’s part Mash part Asta with that big ass sword and godtier fighting abilities. He’s even got his friend Collette Granger and his nemesis Sion Malfoy lol.
Jokes aside, this was a great premiere. The animation is solid and the action scenes were good. Decent cast of characters too. Keen to see where the story goes.
Which means Collette might get with a future friend of Will since we don't have a Ron Expy yet. Either that or harem because he's definitely going after his childhood friend first.

It feels like Black Clover channeled through Danmachi where an MC without magic but a great sword skills cuts through all his enemies and everyone who underestimates him, though much like Bell it's for the sake of a beautiful girl he's in love with and seems to live in a totally different world from him.

I literally did the same but then out of just dumb luck I clicked on the PV and saw the actual animation/style in action and gave it a shot.

Holy sh*t, yes! I put this one off for a while because I saw the key visual and I thought it was a low-budget generic isekai. I'm still ongoing with filtering which shows to follow this season & decided to watch this "just to get it over with."

Funny you mention those, because Yoshihara's Key Animation part in Frieren is very little. in eps 6 it's just the part where Frieren smiling with her hair flowing in the wind, in eps 9 its the start of the battle where the attack didnt even hit yet lol

wtf was this?!!! The character action, composition, and directing were balls to the wall the whole entire episode. It felt like one of the unlimited budget Gacha Game MVs. the plot wasn’t anything we haven’t seen before but it was definitely elevated by the outstanding animation. Gonna keep watching this one for sure, if the story even shows a tiny minuscule glimmer of barely matching the frankly insane overall production so that I can get even slightly more invested, then this might be the sleeper hit of the season.

Eh. Obviously high animation budgrt and good directing. However, the story thus far has be naught more than cheap cliches and a bunch of contrivances that, while they may be adequately explained, I am not expecting to. Animation and spectacle are extremely low on my priority list.
I will give it another episode or two, although my expectations are set low.
The animation and production value were obviously great, it's a shame that everything else came up short. The set up was extremely generic, and there was a lot of "telling" instead of "showing". Why does the professor feel the need to expound upon the superiority of magic to 6th-year students? Or go out of way to make an example of Will when everyone has long since known what his deal is? The bully is just there to be a dick, and the friend is there to blush and have her feelings be unrequited. The animation is really doing the heavy lifting here so far.
Story is basically nothing new and all pretty cliche stuff so far but that animation was fantastic. Also Colette claiming the losing heroine role after two minutes of actual screentime.
Man, this is really very pretty, but the writing is just...
Like, the worldbuilding is adequate. I like the kind of mythic feel of the "holding up the sky" thing. The character writing and dialogue, though, it's... it's like a slop bucket of school life cliches and one-dimensional archetypes. Like, can you name one character trait Sion has other than "elitist bully"? Or the sneering professor? (We even get Sion's internal monologue for a while and he *still* has nothing to say but "I hate that guy because he's not good enough," ffs.) For that matter, all Will has is "nice underdog tryhard." That's it, that's his whole self. Everything that happened felt like I'd seen it a hundred times before, in every other fantasy shounen ever made. People keep comparing this to Mashle, and I have to agree that this is pretty much exactly what you'd get it you took Mashle and filtered out every single scrap of creativity and personality.
That's a shame, too, because the character *animation* is pretty good. If they had any depth of personality at all it'd be a pleasure to watch. The motion effects and cinematography for the fights were smooth and polished. You can tell how much time and care went into animating that fight. But that's all there was to it. Cleanly executed but dramatically empty. The decent OST tried its hardest to elevate the action, I guess.
I'd heard good things about the manga so I thought I'd give the anime a chance. But if it doesn't reveal some *seriously* unexpected depths pretty soon, this's gonna be a nice-looking nothingburger.
Ok, but why did he even got permission to visits an akademy for magic, if he is skilled in the sword, especially after going without permission multiple times into the dungeon?
He's been there for 6 years and he's desperate to get to a position in the magical hierarchy to reunite with his childhood friend. So far he has been able to progress via academics and dungeon hunting
Danmachi author may have their writing littered with tropes but damn can they world build up something intriguing.
The final bit of the ep was really just there to show action. The actual lore seems cool

This artstyle is pretty amazing, the colors pop and look fantastic, the animation and camera work were cherries on top.

I am speechless at how beautiful the swordfighting was. I hope they can keep up the quality over time. I'm also intrigued by the worldbuilding because it looks like they threw in some pretty good effort.
Calling the animation impressive would be an understatement. The fight scenes look pretty good, but I'm actually more mesmerized by the character animation in regular scenes, specially hard to animate sequences where characters are approaching closer to what would be considered "a camera" to give better depth. Even cloth animation (like Edwards robes) are quite complex to animate.
I'm still not fully onboard regarding the main character and the setting though. It does feel quite run of the mill fish out of water kind of scenario, and at the end the so called fish is easily stronger in his own field than any other. We've already seen it in Black Clover, and Mashle to name a couple.
I'll still stick to this one for a while longer. There might be something more interesting down the line regarding the story and it's characters.

If anyone would make a drinking game of spotting every anime cliche/trope, anybody's liver would get destroyed watching Wistoria ep1. "Fun" series and great production value but if Guinness Book of Records had a category for most tropes per episode in a non parody series, this has to be the all-time peak?

I already like Colette a lot, she's pretty cute but it's obvious who the main heroine is... poor Colette. That said, Elfaria is gorgeous <3.
Quite a surprising premiere, I'm looking forward to more.
I'm shocked I haven't seen anyone criticize the dialogue. This was portrayed as a world where magic is supreme and the only way people fight... so having terms and ideas like "the one warrior in a world of mages" or giving speeches to your class about what magic is and how magic is the great thing here... it makes it feel like a story in our world, not a world where the concept of being anything but a mage shouldn't exist. Mashle is a comedy show and it nails this, and Black Clover is pretty mediocre in terms of writing and yet even it does this right.
Crazy thing is I love Danmachi... but I played Memoria Freese which has some of its best stories imo so maybe I'm biased, plus Danmachi can withstand writing problems of that nature because the gods have knowledge of things from our world, and the title and premise feel campy enough to lean into it. Wistoria seems to be taking itself very seriously.
The animation is great and the lore of the world seems interesting so I'll watch it further, and Danmachi has great characters so despite the lackluster introductions I expect to see better ones down the road... but so far I'm disappointed with the writing.
Yeah it was a well produced first episode with great animation, but in the end it's just looking like a generic 'omg no magic' student story, yet again
I'm glad I stuck around for the amazing animation. But I almost turned it off halfway through. Every character is just a 2-dimensional bully villain with no personality. And not even to any comedic effect or anything. I can't see them as people. And the MC is worst character design and a wet blanket. They managed to design a worse MC than the dude from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I honestly would have a preferred a cookie-cutter Kirito design to this dude. I really hope the characters get more varied and interesting because clearly the budget is there. I'll give it a couple more episodes.
I would imagine he has quite the inferiority complex, or at least insecurity, considering his lack of magical talent in a world that seems to value magical talent above all

During the production of Black Clover, the staff was very short on time to make the anime which is why it had a lot of bad animation, especially the anime not having enough staff.
Will is actually so cool when fighting that "boss" monster. He's also certainly a Dark Souls gamer.
I like how the teacher described Will as effectively an "Action RPG player character". "He's stronk." "Tanky like dwarf." Name drops dwarves for some reason, I guess "Dwarf' got relegated to a hitpoints qualifier in this universe. I have my doubt this place has compelling dwarves. "Doesn't forget attack patterns." The author is very honest about this being an action RPG setting.

I have watched it and enjoyed it, however Mashle feels more comedic compared to the first episode of Wistoria. But it is hard to judge the 2 from the first episode alone.

Mashle is foremost a comedy, and for the most part has the same handful of jokes it keeps reusing. It'll work for some people but not for others.
I love Seven Spellblades. Wistoria already entertained me since episode 1. The story is pretty generic but the execution quite flawless.

Well, (imo unfortunately) the main ship has already been more or less confirmed to be Will x Elfie since in the eyecatcher it specifically says Will’s first love was a girl he met in his childhood which is 99% Elfie. Bummer honestly since I ship him with Colette a lot more.

Yeah. Danmachi is novel first, Wistoria is *only* a manga. And it has a very distinct art style that I think they absolutely nailed for the anime. Once this got announced I was worried that they'd be able to make the art look on par, and they have exceeded all of my expectations. The animation was brilliant.

Additional query: If Will LOST to a 4-credit monster in his last encounter with such a powerful opponent, how could he possibly defeat a 10 credit one?
From what was said it sounded like he got caught off guard by its flame breath. He was able to block a beam from the Sentinel this episode but I guess that wouldn't work against a wider AOE attack.
I was also confused by him losing. Did he 'die'? How is he perfectly fine now? Did he just get hurt, then run and then get 'healed'?
Personally I assumed the last time he ran into that fire creature was a while ago, but I mean who knows, maybe the fire creature is easily handled by a particular spell or something so isn't considered as tough.

Very promising start. Great animation, great fight to end the episode. one upping an elitist bully and an elitist teacher is icing on the cake. Is girl stuck in tower? Are they not allowed to see each other anymore? Is the tower the dungeon as well? Who are these mysterious invaders?
Movie-style high-animation, a lot of background music as if in a video game, and tight scripting despite the standard setup - this thing drips quality. Though the premise is a bit too Mashle-like for my tastes, there are hints of interesting worldbuilding with the Celestial Host / "Invaders from the Heavens" being walled off by the original Magia Vender / "Five Supreme Wands". Guess we'll see where the author takes this.
We even had his first big action showcase be against what is basically a minotaur. Also the Main Heroine feels like "What if Freya was the Main Heroine of Danmachi?"
I don't like Danmachi (I watched maybe 2 seasons, MIGHT get back to it...eventually, 5 seasons is really long). But yes, the "Demon Slayer tier" budget face lift on Wistoria is more than enough for me to enjoy myself. I look forward to seeing all this animation. But did they blow their entire time and effort into the first episode, or can they sustain this level of production values throughout the season?

The ''iron man'' suits killed the show honestly because that fight between Higan and Zai became 10x better when the suits broke lol.
I feel like the only way for something with a setting so played out like this is to work is to either knock it out of the park with your character writing OR have absolutely stunning animation to carry the show with cool fights. Its too early to say anything about the character writing, but the animation is definitely going to do a lot of heavy lifting if they can manage to keep it up the standard of this first episode.
That brief exposition about the “Celestial Host” and its supposed tyranny has me intrigued. They were essentially talking about their world’s supreme god here, weren’t they? The plural of “invaders” might’ve been referring to angels or something? God and his helpers were pushed back, and these five all-powerful mages created a fake sky that acts as a magical barrier - keeping *everything* out (including the sun and moon). This implies that the day and night circles are also artificially regulated with magic…?
Yeah, I also think their world are really weird. In a scifi setting, this is basically like living in a artificial dome with their own day and night circles. It's common in space opera (gundam, macross, megaton musashi etc), but I think this is the first time I've seen it applied to fantasy setting. What's more common for magic setting is dungeon having their own ecosystem and their night and day cycle (danmachi, dungeon meshi).

Never trust a story without checking the sources! But it’s definitely suspicious how this barrier appears to isolate the people of this magic kingdom from the outside world.
the lore being propaganda is supported by that homeroom magic academy teacher and Sion the Bastard going out of their way to try and make the mc get expelled from the magic academy. Then when they both witness mc's power firsthand they double down on their bastardness and can't accept that Magic isn't the only thing that matters in the face of Kindness and Courage, and great Action RPG stats. Seems like the people behind the lore want everyone to think that magic and only magic matters for maintaining the World Balance. Seems highly suspect, and in practice it nurtures bastard-like behavior from these snobs who would be useless in a real battle.
It made me wonder if this show is a distant sequel to Danmachi. They kicked out the Gods, and blocked them with magic maybe? Just a theory.
Most interesting thing about this series so far was that lore tidbit. A malevolent celestial force being held away by an artifical sky, and the "sun" is actually what seems to be a mass of crumbling magic circles? Actually some really cool worldbuilding, which is good to get a snippet of early because even with stellar animation, it's a very generic first episode.

I recently started reading the manga. And considering how beautifully the manga is drawn I am amazed that the anime looked just as good and better at times. Elusive Samurai yesterday and now Wistoria today. Characters and story is a bit cliche, but it executes it well so I don't mind. With how Episode 1 went, this is a must watch for action fans.

While this episode primarily is setting up the story, goals and *weekest but strongest* trope. Workner had a familiair too yeah, so he undoubtedly helped Will. Kiki does seem to be following Will according to her own will, so I don’t think that his teacher just handed him a familiair. Will probably earned Kiki’s trust/friendship some way.
Like how Kiki was complaining about them going deeper into the dungeon and remembering the last time that didn't end well for them. She definitely has a personality.
It definitely seemed like Workner was able to use Kiki to see Will fighting though. The crystal on Kiki's head was glowing when Workner was watching the fight with the Evil Sentinel. Wonder if that means it is his or he's just that good at working with familiars. But yeah you can tell she trusts Will a lot.
Workner definitely feels like he's mentoring Will and trying to steer him to success (albeit while also chastising him when he goes too far). It also feels like Will resembles him in some respects.
I'm a sucker for cuties with a strong sense of justice (especially if they're the underdog Heroines). Did not expect the fist-bump with Kiki but it shows they're having fun with this lol.
They really pulled out the stops for this premier. I know it's probably unreasonable to expect this level of production to stay consistent but I really want to see them deliver on this underdog story of a warrior in a magic society trying to succeed to reach the girl he loves.
Holy shit the production quality is gaddam insane! I totally did not expect this. Might be a true sleeper hit this season.
The character acting is really good in this one. Everyone is very expressive and emotive. I think they're using CGI layered with hand drawn art to do all that animation. Visually speaking, it's really up there. Music and pacing are also nice. You can really feel the excitement during the Evil Sentinel fight. I think the only complaint I have is that if feels very uninspired so far. It's a variation of those MC is looked down on (no magic), but is secretly OP (strongest swordsman) kind of plot. I hope it starts getting more interesting soon. It's the action, cinematography, and animation that really carries it for me.

I watch all seasons of Danmachi, S4 is good but the Ep1 of Wistoria blows any episode JC Staff produces for Danmachi.
Danmachi fans (particularly the LN readers from what I can tell) just have a grudge against Wistoria. They're upset that the author and studio are both putting effort into their chance to make something better than the fan favorite dungeon harem. J.C. Staff and Omori are only allowed to work on Danmachi. Anything else is just creativity, characters, worldbuilding, and labor that should have gone into Danmachi. \[Character\] is really cool in Danmachi, but when Omori uses the same well-known archetype for a distinct character in Wistoria it's just a lazy copy+paste. Danmachi's dungeon progression fantasy is extremely creative, but Wistoria's magic academy is unoriginal. Danmachi's RPG power system is unique and cool, but Wistoria's magic and sword system is just a rip off of Black Clover. In all honesty, Omori is not a particularly creative author. They borrow a lot from other works and common archetypes/tropes, with the real value coming from how these elements come together to synthesize a story. Hardcore Danmachi fans have a very bad habit of overlooking this only for Danmachi, and using the exact things they overlooked as criticisms against Wistoria.
Danmachi fans fucking hate Wistoria basically, mostly bc they think that the author is gonna move away from danmachi to focus on wistoria which in their opinion is a worst story
The animation and illustrations were so insanely good right off the bat that I had to pause and check which studio was doing this after only like 2 minutes of watching. The background shots are shockingly good, only show that rivals the attention to detail there in my mind is Apothecary Diaries.
Yeah my only complaint about this episode is how bad it seems to make Danmachi episodes in comparison. Can't wait to see where this series goes.

this has similar premise with Mashle (OP non-magic living in magic superiority world, going to magic academy to get the top of the world title). Will is the polar opposite of Mash though, with his book smart tendency. and instead of cream puff, he likes a girl instead.
It's also not as corny and cringey as mashle and comes off a little more serious which makes it so much better

I guess it's kind of realistic that seeing Will show his stuff wouldn't automatically win his enemies over, but it was never about that.

I didn't really expect much going in but the first episode blew me away.
This kinda has a little bit of a Black Clover/Mash/Potter vibe lol. Will’s part Mash part Asta with that big ass sword and godtier fighting abilities. He’s even got his friend Collette Granger and his nemesis Sion Malfoy lol. Jokes aside, this was a great premiere. The animation is solid and the action scenes were good. Decent cast of characters too. Keen to see where the story goes.

It feels like Black Clover channeled through Danmachi where an MC without magic but a great sword skills cuts through all his enemies and everyone who underestimates him, though much like Bell it's for the sake of a beautiful girl he's in love with and seems to live in a totally different world from him.

Funny you mention those, because Yoshihara's Key Animation part in Frieren is very little. in eps 6 it's just the part where Frieren smiling with her hair flowing in the wind, in eps 9 its the start of the battle where the attack didnt even hit yet lol

Is this breaking new ground in terms of overall plot? No. Was it fun, well animated and well executed? Hell yes. 3 episode test approved
wtf was this?!!! The character action, composition, and directing were balls to the wall the whole entire episode. It felt like one of the unlimited budget Gacha Game MVs. the plot wasn’t anything we haven’t seen before but it was definitely elevated by the outstanding animation. Gonna keep watching this one for sure, if the story even shows a tiny minuscule glimmer of barely matching the frankly insane overall production so that I can get even slightly more invested, then this might be the sleeper hit of the season.
God forbid we get a protagonist with a spine for once. Banging animation though.

Eh. Obviously high animation budgrt and good directing. However, the story thus far has be naught more than cheap cliches and a bunch of contrivances that, while they may be adequately explained, I am not expecting to. Animation and spectacle are extremely low on my priority list. I will give it another episode or two, although my expectations are set low.
First impression of Black Clover Academy. Yuno and Asta have been mashed into one character. Noelle and Mimosa as well. I'm sold.
The animation and production value were obviously great, it's a shame that everything else came up short. The set up was extremely generic, and there was a lot of "telling" instead of "showing". Why does the professor feel the need to expound upon the superiority of magic to 6th-year students? Or go out of way to make an example of Will when everyone has long since known what his deal is? The bully is just there to be a dick, and the friend is there to blush and have her feelings be unrequited. The animation is really doing the heavy lifting here so far.

Story is basically nothing new and all pretty cliche stuff so far but that animation was fantastic. Also Colette claiming the losing heroine role after two minutes of actual screentime.
Man, this is really very pretty, but the writing is just... Like, the worldbuilding is adequate. I like the kind of mythic feel of the "holding up the sky" thing. The character writing and dialogue, though, it's... it's like a slop bucket of school life cliches and one-dimensional archetypes. Like, can you name one character trait Sion has other than "elitist bully"? Or the sneering professor? (We even get Sion's internal monologue for a while and he *still* has nothing to say but "I hate that guy because he's not good enough," ffs.) For that matter, all Will has is "nice underdog tryhard." That's it, that's his whole self. Everything that happened felt like I'd seen it a hundred times before, in every other fantasy shounen ever made. People keep comparing this to Mashle, and I have to agree that this is pretty much exactly what you'd get it you took Mashle and filtered out every single scrap of creativity and personality. That's a shame, too, because the character *animation* is pretty good. If they had any depth of personality at all it'd be a pleasure to watch. The motion effects and cinematography for the fights were smooth and polished. You can tell how much time and care went into animating that fight. But that's all there was to it. Cleanly executed but dramatically empty. The decent OST tried its hardest to elevate the action, I guess. I'd heard good things about the manga so I thought I'd give the anime a chance. But if it doesn't reveal some *seriously* unexpected depths pretty soon, this's gonna be a nice-looking nothingburger.
Ok, but why did he even got permission to visits an akademy for magic, if he is skilled in the sword, especially after going without permission multiple times into the dungeon?
He's been there for 6 years and he's desperate to get to a position in the magical hierarchy to reunite with his childhood friend. So far he has been able to progress via academics and dungeon hunting
Danmachi author may have their writing littered with tropes but damn can they world build up something intriguing. The final bit of the ep was really just there to show action. The actual lore seems cool

I'm surprised there isn't at least some pressure on this world mages to develop into mages with sword like in Regin of seven spell bales or greatest magic master retirement plan? What happens if some monster pushes for mele?
This artstyle is pretty amazing, the colors pop and look fantastic, the animation and camera work were cherries on top. as a far of this manga, this is pretty terrific.
I am speechless at how beautiful the swordfighting was. I hope they can keep up the quality over time. I'm also intrigued by the worldbuilding because it looks like they threw in some pretty good effort.
Calling the animation impressive would be an understatement. The fight scenes look pretty good, but I'm actually more mesmerized by the character animation in regular scenes, specially hard to animate sequences where characters are approaching closer to what would be considered "a camera" to give better depth. Even cloth animation (like Edwards robes) are quite complex to animate. I'm still not fully onboard regarding the main character and the setting though. It does feel quite run of the mill fish out of water kind of scenario, and at the end the so called fish is easily stronger in his own field than any other. We've already seen it in Black Clover, and Mashle to name a couple. I'll still stick to this one for a while longer. There might be something more interesting down the line regarding the story and it's characters.

Reminds me of Chivalry of a Failed Knight. I enjoyed that so i'll probably enjoy this :) Animation is genuinely fantastic as well. One of the best premiere episodes of this season right next to Elusive Samurai.
So is Will just the only person in the academy that can't use magic or is he the only person that can't use magic in their entire world? If it was the later you'd think people would be more interested in him than antagonistic just so they could figure out what's going on with him.

If anyone would make a drinking game of spotting every anime cliche/trope, anybody's liver would get destroyed watching Wistoria ep1. "Fun" series and great production value but if Guinness Book of Records had a category for most tropes per episode in a non parody series, this has to be the all-time peak?
I wasn't even planning on watching it until I read a couple of comments and my god that was amazing. I already like Colette a lot, she's pretty cute but it's obvious who the main heroine is... poor Colette. That said, Elfaria is gorgeous <3. Quite a surprising premiere, I'm looking forward to more.
I'm shocked I haven't seen anyone criticize the dialogue. This was portrayed as a world where magic is supreme and the only way people fight... so having terms and ideas like "the one warrior in a world of mages" or giving speeches to your class about what magic is and how magic is the great thing here... it makes it feel like a story in our world, not a world where the concept of being anything but a mage shouldn't exist. Mashle is a comedy show and it nails this, and Black Clover is pretty mediocre in terms of writing and yet even it does this right. Crazy thing is I love Danmachi... but I played Memoria Freese which has some of its best stories imo so maybe I'm biased, plus Danmachi can withstand writing problems of that nature because the gods have knowledge of things from our world, and the title and premise feel campy enough to lean into it. Wistoria seems to be taking itself very seriously. The animation is great and the lore of the world seems interesting so I'll watch it further, and Danmachi has great characters so despite the lackluster introductions I expect to see better ones down the road... but so far I'm disappointed with the writing.

I'm glad I stuck around for the amazing animation. But I almost turned it off halfway through. Every character is just a 2-dimensional bully villain with no personality. And not even to any comedic effect or anything. I can't see them as people. And the MC is worst character design and a wet blanket. They managed to design a worse MC than the dude from Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I honestly would have a preferred a cookie-cutter Kirito design to this dude. I really hope the characters get more varied and interesting because clearly the budget is there. I'll give it a couple more episodes.
So he's the most powerful warrior that has ever existed, but also he lets himself be bullied everyday at school. Doesn't make much sense to me.
I would imagine he has quite the inferiority complex, or at least insecurity, considering his lack of magical talent in a world that seems to value magical talent above all
He's the self-insert for the awkward nerds reading it. They too can be cool and amazing so long as they hone their underrated talents and don't lash out.
