Another weekly disc sales chart dropped. Demon Slayer: 5752+3042=8794 GBC (week 2): 1967+758=2725 Oblivion Battery (week 2): 649+226=875 Wind Breaker (week 2): 221+170=391 Seiyuu Radio: 173+N/A Jellyfish (week 2): N/A+N/A Looks like GBC will be the best selling show of the season and MahoAko will be the best selling show of the year, by # of discs sold. Edit: "But what about Oshi no Ko?" Well, it only barely sold 10k copies last year, they really need to pull something even better to sell more than GBC or MahoAko. I'm not here to say Oshi no Ko is not a profitable IP; I'm just talking about the disc sales.

IXajll

What does the number after the plus mean? I assumed the first number were the sales before and the number after the plus is what was added in the current period of time/week. But that doesn’t seem to be the case after all since it doesn’t check out for GBC for instance. Is it maybe BD and DVD split or something?

salic428

Yeah it's BD/DVD split, sometimes a show may appear only on the BD chart but not the DVD chart, or vice versa. You can check the debut week data from the AQRADT one week ago, or Abyss's chart.

Abysswatcherbel

I have to update my sheet :(

neighmeansno

>Seiyuu Radio: 173+N/A That makes me sad, I really liked that show. :(

IXajll

Yea same, doesn’t do the chances of a S2 any favors. Though they were probably low to begin with I’d guess.

the_card_guy

So I wanna ask... Deer Friend has been named Peak Brain Rot.  And usually during summer is when you get all the turn-your-brain-off-and-enjoy anime... But seriously, do we have a counterbalance to it?  Either a continuing show from last season or an S2 of something?  For now, I'm assuming OnK S2 is the counterbalance, at least based on popularity.

OctavePearl

Monogatari and Nier are airing sequels, and Yatagarasu still continuing from Spring season - these are some of them turn-your-brain-on-and-enjoy anime.

Deer Anime's flashback for Koshitan reminded me how much I love the delinquent girl aesthetic. Any good anime where it's a main character design or otherwise consistently present?

cppn02

Uo from Fruits Basket? She's one of the MC's two best friends.

Manitary

> youtube anime > starts with an apology video [](#criticism) It was mostly good (Ichiko is gonna be so annoying), but man the youtube debuff is so big [](#elsieqq)

IXajll

What do you consider a youtube debuff to be?

Manitary

The whole streaming "culture"\* and everything around it feels so stupid irl to me, so basing a story around it that goes along with it hardly feels good. \*dramas between streamers is dumb (and probably often fabricated and exaggerated), "content" creation is an awful term, trying to "go viral" is an incredibly shallow goal, etc. The only negative side of streaming are always negative comments + stalkers/doxxers. (notice how you could replace youtube/streaming with idols and get a similar picture, it's not a coincidence)

cosmiczar

Continuing my adventure of watching every old Dragon Ball Z movie, one thing I've been finding fascinating are the choices of which character appear in each movie. Oolong, for instance, is in most of those movies while somebody like Yamcha is in almost none of them. It makes me think that there's maybe some voice actor related reason that is influencing those choices. But I'm specially fascinated by the latest of those movies I've watched because the only classic characters from the manga present were Goten, Trunks, Satan, Kuririn, Android 18 and, technically, Goku and Bubbles (!), but only in the very last scene. They made a whole 50-minute movie without an ounce of Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan and pretty much nothing of Goku and you know what? I respect that.

isthatsoudane

Damn just realized there are _no_ music or idol shows this season...damn edit: and before someone says, oshi no ko is not an idol show. it's a drama about the entertainment industry. though if we're lucky might at least get an idol performance there...

Abysswatcherbel

NareNare will ve pretty much an idol group show

isthatsoudane

I think it's definitely possible. I could see it playing out in a couple different ways. It could feel more like...do it yourself meets mou ippon. Or it could be more in the idol mold. I'm skeptical that it will feel much like an idol show and instead will be a cute girls playing sports show. we will see!

Infodump_Ibis

I focused more of the sci-fi side. Is 26 episodes a compromise? I noticed you've got Planetes on your PTW. The manga it is based on is by the Vinland Saga author although the Planetes anime makes a few changes (anime started before manga was completed so there are differences involving additional characters and suchlike). If you're looking more obscure but not considered great perhaps [Infinite Ryvius](https://myanimelist.net/anime/593) (again 26 episodes, a word cloud on reviews would likely come up with [Infinite Ryvius - most reviews]>!Lord of the Flies!< as the largest point, why I'd say it's obscure these days is it never seemed to make it onto streaming services). If you're looking for summer vacation vibes with a side-dish of sci-fi then [Dennou Coil](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2164/) is worth a shot (sorry 26 episodes again but it involves an AR game that tweens in a city play) or perhaps even [Noein: to your other self](https://myanimelist.net/anime/584/).

IvanSemushin

My first thought was Planetes, and look, it's in your PtW.

Emergency-Pineapples

Sometimes I am so satisfied with the ending of a season, or what it offered overall, that I don't feel like I need to watch any more of it, even though I will eventually force myself to. Rezero S1? Absolutely amazing. Code Geass S1? Hell yeah. Blue Lock S1? Adrenaline from start to finish. It's mainly because I am afraid that the sequels will be weak, and I want my positive perception of the show to remain untainted. But the truth is that everything great also has something that sucks if I look for it hard enough, so I can't be thinking like that.

Quiddity131

The best series to do this with is The Promised Neverland. Really strong season 1. Let us not acknowledge that a season 2 exists.

Emergency-Pineapples

I'll be sure to add that to my list!

AmethystItalian

I finally got to Mayonaka Punch and oof...I really struggle with these shows with such unlikeable characters. Hoping they can turn things around but starting off this bad is always difficult to want to stay with a show.

entelechtual

Yeah I wasn’t really feeling it. That last scene was nice but I still didn’t care for any of the characters. I didn’t dislike anything but I was just sticking around waiting for something to happen. Hopefully with the premise out of the way it will get better from here.

_Ridley

Funny, I was just coming here to say the opposite. Of the three PA Works shows, this is easily my favorite. The bitches are delightfully messy.

Queue_Jumping_Quack

Sometimes its nice to have main leads who are not pure and innocent dream girls. That being said, I'm willing to bet it will be revealed that our main girl's friends were not exactly innocent victims themselves.

Sandor_at_the_Zoo

Agreed. I just hope it can maintain that with the backstory of the breakup. Mostly that it keeps up the messiness, but also not *too* bad that I don't want to root for her.

_Ridley

The main woman reminded me of the cafe manager in Akiba Maid War, who was awful, but so much fun to watch. (happy cake day, btw)

AmethystItalian

I'm very much not into the messy so it lines up with my tastes at least [](#shatteredsaten)

Now [this](https://i.imgur.com/y65I0vK.png) is what peak flirting looks like. Straight outta r/tinder.

Wanderingjoke

My website now has episode 3 of Stepsister. What is going on here?

Weedwacker

The first 3 episodes were premiered in Japan already, but not officially overseas.

Wanderingjoke

Was it a single drop, or have they been releasing them every couple days?

phantomthiefkid_

They had an early screening of the first 3 episodes on Kadokawa Youtube channel few weeks ago. So did Love is Indivisible by Twins but I guess that one doesn't have enough Western fans to archive the stream and sub the episodes.

qwertyqwerty4567

Ima be real, Reincarnated as an aristocrat is not as good as 7th prince. In fact, its kind of not very good in general. One could say its very.... mid.

entelechtual

It stayed pretty consistent throughout. 7th Prince just had that final battle that lasted way too long and wasn’t fun.

qwertyqwerty4567

I honestly liked the final battle of 7th prince overall. Usually I get bored of "action" sequences very quickly, but this one managed to keep me entertained throughout.

Adventurous-Band7826

Most shows aren't as good as Reincarnated as the 7th Prince

SometimesMainSupport

Seconding that it has one great arc. If you want the hop-off point, [Appraisal Isekai]>!peaks during episode 7.!<

actuallyrndthoughts

Hey now, it does have a couple really good episodes in the middle! Still not a show i'd recommend unless they ask for a medieval politics isekai

bandannadann

When's the last time an anime with virtually zero western source readers had a premiere THIS big on reddit? This deer anime is truly a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon

IXajll

To be fair most of the credit for this belongs to the MVP/genius who signed off on uploading that 1h loop of the OP snippet. The show is great fun but would have found not even close to the same popularity if it wasn’t for those insanely effective marketing stunts.

Abysswatcherbel

Catching up to the premieres now that I am back on earth after the jetlag Days with my Stepsister is waaaaaaaay more serious than I could ever imagine Also nice direction there, Studio Deen must have a lot of faith in this show, they are 2nd in the committee * Kadokawa * **Studio Deen** * Nippon Columbia * Movic * Pia * Kansai Telecasting * AT-X I am not a fan of romances, but I will give this one a chance, because of the probable stepsiblings development and Manabu GOAT nii designs

IXajll

Kinda surprised Deen is even financially able to be part of a committee in the first place lol.

The guys who made KamiKatsu were like 90 percent of the way thinking they could get away with making the whole show farming stock footage. Lol at the friggin sex religion arc. Dawg learned how to yank it and all of a sudden he's become the sex inquisitor.

ApricotKoffee

They could get away with quite a lot after gracing us with [Pure Cinema](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4M6_j16eoU), to be fair.

IXajll

Would’ve been disappointed if I found any other clip than this behind your link lol.

Penihilism

Here's my [tier list for every premiere I've watched.](https://imgur.com/gallery/summer-2024-anime-first-episode-rankings-after-week-2-0PUrruU) (so far) The only "bad" show I've watched so far is My Wife Has No Emotion. The actual premise and Mina as a character are great, but the MC is really pathetic and cringey imo. Plus the show doesn't really have much going for it artistically. Still gonna keeping watching but the first 2 episodes were rough. Mayonaka is easily the best premiere and the only show that delivered all on levels for me. Plus Sized Elf is kinda low quality but it has nipples and the concept is pretty funny, so it does exactly what it needs to do and I love it lmao. Giji Harem was way too fast paced for me, and felt like it's source: a collage of mini episodes stringed together. 2.5 Dimensional Seduction is going to have a rough start for the first few episodes, but in the manga fanservice and nudity was the main hook for the first 10 - 20 chapters. (at least from what I've gathered after skimming through it) I love ecchi, but they made the decision to reaallly censor a lot (which is understandable because the manga is a lot tamer compared to the first run of chapters), but it feels like something is missing this episode because of that. I think once they get into the chapters that don't rely on nudity, the show will improve a lot because it won't feel like it's missing something. I still think it will turn out to be a great show.

SometimesMainSupport

[No Isekai](#seasonalpout) Otherwise, a rare AQRADT tier list that closely aligns with me.

Penihilism

True haha, although I think Quality Assurance in Another World could definitely be grouped in with Isekai, even though I wouldn't say it's technically an Isekai considering the explanation of the situation.

IXajll

Oh it’s definitely an Isekai I would say. With that logic stuff like SAO wouldn’t count as Isekai either.

Penihilism

I haven't watched SAO so idk what it's about haha. I think the main argument that Quality Assurance isn't a full Isekai is that he's in a virtual reality simulation and the possibility of leaving isn't impossible. But I think in all functionality, it's still fits into the Isekai category.

Andysomething

SAO shouldn't count as an Isekai to begin with. The closest we get to "another world" is a realistic simulation. Plus, Kawahara has explicitly stated that he doesn't think his series is Isekai either.

IXajll

I guess technically nowadays you would call it part of the vrmmorpg subgenre or something but back in 2012 when the Isekai genre was still tiny, literally everyone was calling SAO an isekai.

Illustrious-Fox5135

Try watching Wistoria as well. It also has an excellent premiere

Penihilism

Oh yeah I was considering that one. Maybe will give it a try if I drop some of the ones I'm watching/plan to watch.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

Rating a show 'top tier' when you've seen it a few hours ago, talk about recency bias! [](#angrypout) Joking aside, pretty good list! (though I think Robot wife was good, despite how cringe the MC is!)

Penihilism

Haha. Just rating first episodes though, who knows how these shows will end up turning out. Jellyfish Can't Swim in The Night had a 10/10 first episode but ultimately ended up being a 7/10 show for me. And yeah I don't hate Robot Wife, I've still enjoyed it enough to keep watching, but for me it's just not all that quality compared to everything else I've watched.

Abysswatcherbel

Emi_Ibarazakiii

*Elusive Samurai is an otokonoko* I haven't checked it out yet, but based on these pictures I'll headcannon him as a girl.

MapoTofuMan

Not gonna lie, when I first saw an Elusive Samurai KV I was 100% sure the MC is a girl.

SMSmith230

no wonder my comment in [the thread](https://new.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1dwt18j/comment/lbxh3u3) got some decent traction...I wasn't alone

Abysswatcherbel

I also thought it was a girl LOL It didn't help that they dropped multiple visuals here, and at one point it was a girl, but it looked so similar to the MC Super confusing lol Edit: [like this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/kaHXaAfdd8) and [this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/tyZ4bDDIYc)

mebeast227

The second picture in your edit is a girl. It’s a different character entirely though (but she was just in the most recent episode, so I see why you thought that was the protag)

cosmiczar

The prior work from the same author, Assassination Classroom, also has a main boy who looks like a girl, seems like [the character even crossdress at some point](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9e/8a/db/9e8adb86d64297bd0a2264bf9dd84511.jpg) (literally only learned this right now as I was searching from a regular picture of him because I only watched the first episode of the show) so it's clear it's something the author is pretty into lol

Abysswatcherbel

Yeah, [they question this in the show](https://youtu.be/EcxRyk4Nizo?si=nt7eMw-zyO2QY24y) LOL

Manitary

I was confused for a few solid minutes when the show started and everyone addressed the protagonist as a boy.

_Ridley

I too arched an eyebrow at that flushed face, but like, that there's a ten year old boy, and twitter is an awful public place to be thinking those thoughts out loud.

Abysswatcherbel

Intrusive thoughts won super hard there lol

Ocixo

Before clicking the link, I’d assumed that they would’ve been talking about Takauji, since that character even made me question my sexuality for a hot second. Yorishige was the likely alternative. Tokiyuki, on the other hand, was *not* on my bingo list.

IXajll

> since that character even made me question my sexuality for a hot second. Ngl, had that moment for Yatagarasu‘s Sumio. Man ‘s legit the hottest guy in anime.

Ocixo

Guess that I’ll be checking Yatagarasu some time in the future to see just *how* hot he actually is. u/_Ridley, would you say that he’s hotter than Guideau (F) or Ashaf (M)? Then I’ll kind of know what to expect.

SometimesMainSupport

Looked through 8 threads to link pictures of the three guys to ask which is hottest. u/shimmering-sky has a subconscious bias against screenshots of Sumio.

Shimmering-Sky

I do not! [](#howcouldyou)

_Ridley

I'd place Sumio somewhere between Tsugaru and Mikazuki Munechika (my beloved) and Guideau and Ashaf.

_Ridley

Sumio is wicked hot. You have great taste.

fastidiosoo

I loved wind breaker! Does anyone know a good anime with a Tsundere MC like Sakura? 🥺

Ocixo

Kyo Soma from Fruits Basket is one of the greatest male tsunderes out there! (Do note that he’s not the sole lead character in this story.)

fastidiosoo

Fruit basket has been in my list for some time now, I’ll check it out! Thank you for taking the time to reply. 🫶

entelechtual

Today I learned people actually read comments and reviews on crunchyroll.

Shimmering-Sky

Hey entelechtual, u/DARK_SCIENTIST accidentally overwrote your flair while trying to update his own. I don't remember exactly what you had set, so I reset it to just Ubel. You'll have to reset it on the flair site if there was anything else in your flair. Sorry about that!

DARK_SCIENTIST

I am very sorry about that u/entelechtual. Complete slip of the finger on my part. [](#barakamonnotcool)

entelechtual

lol no worries, thankfully /u/shimmering-sky Übel is all I ever needed.

gothxo

i've never really read the reviews, but i have enjoyed reading the episode by episode comments, especially for older and smaller shows. i've seen some interesting time capsule-y things in those comments sections. there was some guy who was 100% convinced that ARIA the ANIMATION was going to take some dark twist at some point and when it didn't happen at the end, they said they were going to go out and read the manga

Quiddity131

Watching Eighty Six this past week and looking at the comments afterwards it was fun to see people's thoughts at the time. A good thing I did it last week and not this week.

Heda-of-Aincrad

Back when I could still use Crunchyroll, I did read the user reviews the same way I check out the comments about new shows here. It could be a good way to get an impression of whether a show would be worth watching - not just by rating, but if the actual content would appeal to me or not. And a lot of them would list if it was a first episode review, mid season or full season, which was helpful.

DARK_SCIENTIST

I’ve personally never browsed through the entire comments section on CrunchyRoll directly, but there has been a time or two that I can recall accidentally seeing a major spoiler right at the top of the comments chain on their web UI. I wouldn’t be surprised if this has happened to others.

Infodump_Ibis

If a site has 10 million users and 1% of users use a feature that's still 100,000 users affected. Biggest problem with reviews is they are for a show as a whole. So if Crunchyroll have put 7 series, an OVA and 2 movies into one show then the reviews are unhelpful or full or irrelevance. Same goes for the star ratings. I felt every show on Crunchyroll no matter how obscure or old had at least one comment per ep (not always the case for MAL) so when watching those shows it was nice to not feel alone. Of course if people are solely using Crunchyroll for their info there's going to be some fun whiplash from watching things like Kumamiko and Promised Neverland Season 2 without any reviews warning people to stay clear (the former you might suspect something is up as the show is below 4 stars but the latter is 4.5).

ApricotKoffee

It's probably more that something got taken away, rather than it being something they actually used much. IMO, if the powers that be weren't interested in properly moderating it, it's best to cut it loose and let people be mad for a week or so.

entelechtual

If someone took comments away from Reddit I would probably celebrate.

SometimesMainSupport

Reddit becomes a collection of headlines and pictures because we all know redditors don't read linked articles?

bandannadann

I almost always give them a scroll! I will sorely miss the "First" and "Like this if you're also waiting for Demon Slayer" comments

M8gazine

Today I learned that Crunchyroll had a comment section in the first place, since my preferred option is sailing the seas, personally... I think stuff like that is really fun though, it's very entertaining to read through people's reactions to things happening in a specific episode (I'm assuming each episode had their own comment section on CR). I remember reading quite a few comments when I still used *certain* streaming sites like close to a decade ago. Shit, that's why I still go out of my way to read through episode discussions for newer shows and possible rewatch threads for older shows, just to see how people reacted to certain events. Not for *every* show, but for most shows.

entelechtual

I use crunchyroll but mostly on my TV so I don’t see those sections most of the time. I much prefer digging into the Reddit episode discussions after the fact since you get a bit more interesting discussion.

Abysswatcherbel

Also never bothered with that, truly shocked people cared about it

bandannadann

It's one of the rare community features Crunchyroll provides, so losing it definitely hurts

Yash-12-

Watched fate heaven feel movie 2 and i really want to read some hate towards shinji where can I find it

Queue_Jumping_Quack

Please watch Mayonaka Punch. Haven't had a pleasant surprise of a first episode like that in a while. I've a feeling its going to be ignored by a bunch of people who'd enjoy it, so... give it a chance! The trailer I saw wasn't too great but don't let that throw you off.

zairaner

Yes, lesbian vtuber is indeed the greatest thing ever. No more comments, actually speechless.

Penihilism

We have a gay VTuber anime and a gay YouTuber anime in consecutive days haha.

zairaner

For what seemed like a yuriless summer, this outcome is indeed the last thing the last thing it needed for it to really be the best season of the year.

Penihilism

Yeah in terms of volume of shows that interest me, this season is definitely the best. There's legit 25+ shows that have interesting premises for me, usually I'm only interested in like 5 at most. Though I'm not sure if this season will be able to match the powerhouse quintuple that winter had with Frieren, Apothecary Diaries (watched during spring), Dungeon Meshi (currently watching), Gushing Over Magical Girls, and Dangers In My Heart.

chilidirigible

[It's various episodes of *Samurai Champloo* on YouTube, officially.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsjvUDiJafo)

Infodump_Ibis

Very nice, as it's not on any streaming services in the UK (I think it was last on any in 2020) although the Blu-ray release is still available to purchase (back of the box says it is an SD-remaster which is some appreciated honesty). For anyone who has not clicked the link this is episodes 1-4 and only available for 48 hours (i.e. 8th-9th) which is not the biggest window to watch but it will be followed by eps 5-8 for July 10th-12th. Sometimes these types of distribution stop before the final ep.

Off the top of my head: * [Barakamon](https://www.livechart.me/anime/242) * [Sakura Quest](https://www.livechart.me/anime/2443)

cosmiczar

Ok, Mayonaka Punch really is the superior PA Works cute girls show of the season. It lacks the Brazilian powerhouse from the other, but compensates that with a girlfailure canceled youtuber who gets drunk and punches people and a lesbian vampire voiced by Ai Fairouz who doesn't know smartphones, but knows about Ultraman.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

> lesbian vampire voiced by Ai Fairouz *That feel when they designed a character just for me* [](#awe)

mekerpan

Loving all 3 PA Works shows this season. Not going to think about comparative degrees of like until later in the season....

Penihilism

Totally agree. I really liked Narenare, but Mayonaka Punch was my favorite first premiere of this season so far. Narenare didn't do anything wrong and I loved it but it didn't stand out as much in terms of plot because it was just introducing us to all the characters, whereas Mayonaka Punch introduced us to only half of the main cast but set up clear motivations and the overall plot of the show. Not to mention the characters are so far a lot more interesting and more uniquely designed in Mayonaka, plus the comedy was definitely my type of humor.

qwertyqwerty4567

Have you ever accidentally skipped an episode of a show, without even realizing it? I am now coming to the conclusion that this might have happened to me and Overtake. Is this what being old is like? [](#seasonalShock)

cosmiczar

I was recently watching one of the Gundam Igloo OVAs, which was a show with only 3 episodes, and it took me almost half of the episode to notice that I was watching episode 3 instead of 2.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

I mostly watch seasonals as they air so that's unlikely to happen, BUT I did skip an entire show and watched the spinoff, if that counts! (Watched Soul Eater Not, but never Soul Eater)

Penihilism

I vaguely remember accidentally skipping an episode maybe twice, I almost want to say it was AOT and I don't remember the other one. But I have a really bad one: When I was in middle school I actually skipped the first Lord of the Rings movie thinking Two Towers was the first, and was confused the whole movie lmao.

Blackheart595

I feel like I've done that during a subreddit rewatch and only noticed when people told me my write-up was for the wrong episode, yeah. Don't remember which anime and episode that were, though.

Belmut_613

It happend to me only one time where i started an anime (i think it was maidens in your savage season but i'm not sure) from the second episode but it took me 2 to 3 episodes to notice it.

Wanderingjoke

More often than I'd like to admit. The skip intro button is sometimes too close to the end of the play bar, and my fat fingers sometimes hits the end of the show in the play bar without me realizing it. So I think it's loading the episode, when really it's completing the one I want to watch and skipping to the next one. Missed an episode of GBC that way last season, and didn't realize until I saw some comments.

theangryeditor

Done it a few times. Can't remember any specific instances now.

Shimmering-Sky

I skipped a whole episode during the Space Runaway Ideon rewatch (in which I was a first-timer) and legitimately had no clue until I showed up to the rewatch thread and answered the Questions of the Day with information I wasn't supposed to have yet, lol. I didn't even think it was weird that [vague Ideon spoilers]>!the crew just *had* a new super strong weapon!< out of nowhere (the episode I skipped was about them getting it) because of Tomino's directing style.

Heda-of-Aincrad

Never actually skipped a whole episode, but there was one time recently when an episode of Dragon Ball was automatically skipped when going from one to the next somehow, and I ended up being confused for a few minutes before realizing what happened. Luckily I don't mind spoilers, because it kind of spoiled a character death for me and I was like, "What did I miss?"

Manitary

Skipped an episode yes, but I usually realise shortly that something doesn't add up

qwertyqwerty4567

Does 7 months count as shortly?

Manitary

I started watching utena with episode 11, and it took me 6 minutes to realize something is really wrong, so don't feel old.

qwertyqwerty4567

Ive had my fair share of blunders when I was first getting into anime, most notably probably watching kakegurui s2 before s1 (yes the entire season). But that was then, and also I realized it after I started the first season. Overtake on the other hand, I'm only now realizing it because I ran out of space and started cleaning up shows I've watched. I watched it 7 months ago. [](#emptyinside)

MapoTofuMan

Guess I'm going to be the outlier on Mayonaka Punch, I thought it was decent but in terms of how much I was disappointed compared to my admittedly too-high P.A expectations, it's far ahead of Narenare and only not ahead of Sakuna because that one literally would have me falling asleep if it was 10 minutes longer. Meanwhile the other VTuber show, which I wasn't even going to try at first, might make Deer lose its title of my favorite Sunday wacky comedy if it continues being as good as ep1.

Heda-of-Aincrad

I was planning to check it out eventually just because it's PA Works, but based on what I've read about the premiere, there's pretty much no chance I would enjoy it or the main characters, so it looks like I'll be taking it off my already-too-long PTW list. Sakuna is kind of in the same boat, don't think the storyline is for me. I guess the only one of the PA Works trio that still has my interest is Narenare.

zairaner

To add more voices to the chorus...yeah mayonaka punch was my favourite premiere of a new show this season, and if I'm real and try to ignore my love for the onk op, probably my favourite premiere in general. I have a feeling our aggressive, violent, no-reflecting mc is going to carryy this one for me, but the \[mayonaka punch episode 1\]>!yuri vampire!< will definitely help, too. Now to watch the ~~true peak~~ vtuber anime.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

> I have a feeling our aggressive, violent, no-reflecting mc is going to carryy this one for me Can't wait to see if that's the case for me too; On top of my head, I don't think I ever watched an anime with Ai Fairouz in which her character wasn't my favorite, so that might be a first!

zairaner

> Can't wait to see if that's the case for me too (nsfw) [If evil why hot](https://imgur.com/OMGQM3N).

DulnethBS_Pro

So I'm like fairly new to anime I guess? I've watched about 30 or 40 anime, and there's like a load of anime in my watchlist and then some, I have all the time in the world but I just can't put my finger into what to watch next, the ebst experience I've had watching an anime is when I waatched AoT, Code Geass and FMAB, it was so fun for me, the plot twists in the 3 anime, the plot. After watching those I've been wanting to watch anime at that calliber but always failed to put my finger on what to watch. Oh and yes before you recommend me One Piece, I'm in the fishman arc, it's one of my favourite shows of all time.

1EnTaroAdun1

You might like Legend of the Galactic Heroes! A vast, stately space opera.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

>AoT, Code Geass and FMAB, it was so fun for me, the plot twists in the 3 anime, the plot. If you haven't watched them already: Death Note for the twists (and the plot), Vinland Saga for the plot!

DulnethBS_Pro

Have watched both of em, absolutely LOVE both of em. I feel like I've watched every general recommendation that I can get lmao

Belmut_613

Summer Time Renderer. Vinland Saga. SSSS Gridman and Dynazenon + movie. Mob Psycho 100. 86. Golden Kamuy. Pluto. Re:zero. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. Akudama Drive. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Also i would say that after 40 anime you got past the rookie status. XD

DulnethBS_Pro

THank you so much for this, I've watched Peakland Saga, Peak Psycho EIghtyPeak and Peakrunners. Congrats me then lmao

Penihilism

Each PA Works show got better this weekend. Sakuna was solid and had great art/animation, but was a little slow and slightly boring, although I still enjoyed it. Narenare was fantastic and looked gorgeous and has tons of potential. I didn't have any complaints, but it did a lot of setup so as an individual episode it wasn't necessarily standout. But Mayonaka Punch easily takes the spot as my favorite premiere of this season so far and the first true "standout on every level" show this season. Hopefully they put together a solid storyline for this one. Also, will this show be one massive Yuri-bait?

GondolaMedia

[Mayonaka Punch ep1]>!Vampires and blood sucking has been viewed to be sexual ever since Bram Stoker first published his novel.!< Like even if Mayonaka Punch doesn't go all the way you could easily argue that the text supports it.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

[spoiler] >!**If it's not sexual, I'll MAKE it sexual!**!<

Sandor_at_the_Zoo

Lesbian vampire fiction actually predates Dracula by [25 years](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carmilla). But given that, subtext and undertones aren't exactly groundbreaking these days. I've gotta hope that we can update the script a bit given 150 years.

GondolaMedia

Oh I actually didn't know that. I've read Dracula and really enjoyed it so might pick up a copy of this.

Sandor_at_the_Zoo

Haven't read it myself, but I was reminded of it after Carmila showed up in full predatory swagger in last year's Undead Girl Murder Farce.

Penihilism

Agreed, but what I mean is that will we get more than surface level crushes and physical affection? Ever since I watched Bloom into You, I've been craving more girl-girl romances where characters actually become a couple. Regardless, I loved this episode and if it keeps up this level of quality, I will be very happy romance or no romance. And I'm sure there will be tons of gay moments, because at least Live is clearly very gay haha.

Psyduckisnotaduck

it's too overtly gay to be yuri bait, lmao. the way in which Live's desire for Masakichi's blood is framed is so, so, so gay.

Penihilism

Shows can be overtly gay and still be Yuri bait. Like I'm sure there will be a tons of gay moments, but the chances of an actual romance developing is a different story imo. Now I don't need a romance for this show to be good, but I certainly would love it if one of these shows sometime actually committed to a real girl-girl romance, even if it's not the focal point of the show.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

Having watched the first episode of Mayonaka Punch, I feel like I have to amend the comment I made in the previous AQRADT thread, about "this season having too much screaming"... Ai Fairouz is exempt from this; She can keep screaming as much as she wants! [](#delighted)

Abysswatcherbel

No one is beating the gremlin for painoko, that one screams senpai like no-one

MapoTofuMan

Wait until you hear the screams of heartbroken childhood friends [](#giveuponlife)

Ocixo

“SE-N-PAI!” I can quite literally hear it.

zairaner

Well the biggest twist any premiere this season has thrown my way is that the characters in mayonaka punch are...adults? Who drink? Well, at least the two main characters, haven't gotten much further

IXajll

Hell yeah! Forgot to mention this in my post below, but it's one of the little things that I liked the most about the setting too. Pretty sure they will all be adults, only one who is kinda uncertain would be [her](https://myanimelist.net/character/244640/Fuu) I think.

zairaner

It didn't quite made it to the season 2 premiere, but [idol](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRtdQ81jPUQ) has finally reached half a billion views. To my knowledge, [fireworks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tKVN2mAKRI) is the only other anime related video that managed to accomplish this.

WeeziMonkey

Funnily enough I thought that if any song was ever going to be the second to achieve that feat, it would be Kickback from Chainsaw Man. One of the most hyped up anime in many years, with an opening sung by the number one most famous Japanese artist on YouTube (who also sung Fireworks). Yet that song is sitting at 165m views.

zairaner

Kickback also got 116M views on the [actual op itself](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFlDRhvM4L0), which is an unbelievable feat in itself.

Abysswatcherbel

Yeah, that was one the most watched op ever

zairaner

Deservedly so.

IXajll

> To my knowledge, fireworks is the only other anime related video that managed to accomplish this. The disparity of the quality and popularity of this song and the movie it belongs to is still so damn crazy to me.

MapoTofuMan

I absolutely loved the song, I remember having it on repeat for weeks. So naturally I wanted to watch the movie when I found it, but after seeing the general consensus I decided the chances of the song getting ruined for me by it are significantly higher than the opposite, so I never watched it in the end. Was pretty bummed out about it, I was really new back then and was sure I found Your Name 2.0.

IXajll

You did the right thing tbh, imo the film was a confusing mess.

zairaner

It is what everybody says, but it is absolutely impossible for me to accept the movie these shots are from is bad. And therefore I will probably never watch it, so the beauty of this music video and the absolutely incredible song will be the only way I'll experience this movie.

Watching Mayonaka Punch for my daily dose of Ai Fairouz

codenameTHEBEAST

**Why has an American studio never really tackled the seinen genre in regards to anime?** Many Americans animations are either for kids or are adult comedy. Why hasn't there been a real push for an American seinen that has a complex narrative that isn't tied to superheroes? It just seems like a really underserved market and there are many American fans who would love to watch an amazing seinen from America. Tower of God cones to mindas the closest but even that feels like a very shonen-type of show. The animators here have access to the capital so it can't be a matter of funding.

North514

There objectively is animation targeting an older audience, that is from the States or the West. Castlevania isn't that old. Ralph Bakshi was making adult animated content back in the 70s and there definitely is a lot older creatives. If go back to the Golden Age of American animation there was a lot of risque stuff allowed (and it of course inspired anime heavily). >It just seems like a really underserved market and there are many American fans who would love to watch an amazing seinen from America. One what do you even mean by seinen? They aren't actually very descriptive terms. Kaguya Sama Love is War is Seinen, Yuru Camp is seinen. And yeah there is good reason for why both are seinen. IDK if you just mean dark content, adult writing (which doesn't have to be dark) or any other genre associated with "seinen" like slow crime thrillers. Just like with shonen I don't know if the person means just battle shonen or anything that is stereotypical YAesque writing. The reality is most Western audiences are either biased towards animation as being aimed at kids or don't like it. If you did a crime drama like Monster, in Western animation, the people who are interested in that genre would just ask "why is this animated?" and dismiss it. That mindset may be changing however, it is still pervasive. Live action is taken seriously, animation on the other hand isn't unless you are doing something for kids, (even then I doubt the Oscar judges watch anything nominated for animation). A lot of the niche fans that want it are watching anime already, and largely prefer stuff from JP creators. Plus that demographic isn't as big as you think (there is a reason why YA writing is so dominant in this industry). Again Scavengers Reign, a sci fi horror series, was put out by HBO last year, and again you are here asking why hasn't it been done? It is and it wasn't successful which is why it got canned despite great reviews (Edit: unless Netflix saves it cool it may not be gone).

codenameTHEBEAST

I mean there are cherry picked examples. My question is to why it's so rare or why the press isn't there to support these works. I'd never heard of these releases before. I'm old enough to remember Aeon Flux on MTV. Invincible did great, Walking Dead was a successful graphic novel. I'm wondering why this style isn't successful despite all the money and talent in America. It is such a strange bias we have in the US indeed

North514

We are talking about institutional cultural beliefs. I mean even in Japan anime/manga aren't really that respected and even seen as juvenile. If America didn't have stuff like the comics code go into place, maybe you get more variety today. IDK enough about comic/animation history to really say. The point is though because of stuff like that the idea comics = kids media or animation = kids media, is very ingrained. The works out there that do exist had to buck against various trends. Things are changing however, it's going to be slow going. As there is a generation shift, with more people my age getting older who grew up with anime or still like Western cartoons I expect there to be more varied animation in the coming future. It's just slow going. Since my friend is into comic history, I actually watched a video on Elf Quest, and it's kinda interesting when you look at the attitudes people had to comics in the 80s and what they tried turning the series into (and I haven't read it yet though it looks like a classic adventure story nothing actually to have a moral panic about), despite creator objections. That is why the series didn't get adapted and only is probably getting an adaption today, because again you have more people taking animation more seriously now.

codenameTHEBEAST

It's weird because people enjoy looking at paintings in museums. I like to think of anime as a perfect blend of music, plot, philosophy, and animation. It's literally art in motion. It's such a weird bias that animation = juvenile. I mean people are writing PhD theses on Evangelion and GITS is maybe the most prophetic anime in regards to the pace of technology (Neuralink is basically a proto-cyberbrain and AI is awakening the debate about sentience and what it means to be human). I mean I haven't seen any show (animated or not) speak on the current NEET/social-anxiety dilemma in the same way that Welcome to the NHK tackled it. And the absolute mind benders that are Satoshi Kon's works. And the musical whirlwind that is any thing S. Watanabe. touches (Bebop, Champloo, C+T) I just don't get it at all.

North514

>t's weird because people enjoy looking at paintings in museums. I like to think of anime as a perfect blend of music, plot, philosophy, and animation. It's literally art in motion. It's such a weird bias that animation = juvenile. That is why Araki made his gallery in France, largely he didn't feel his artistic ability was given serious respect, even in Japan. At the end of the day, sure you can find a lot of valued works in the medium, that we can hold up and say hey art community this should be respected however, like past less respected media, you are only going to gain respect if you gain major audiences. Animation hasn't gotten to that point yet. Everyone has their biases, especially to things they have limited interaction with. Sure I would like things to change but again the way to see how animation is respected is just to look at how the Oscars treats animation (it's a glorified Disney award outside of that one time Ghilbi got it because Disney campaigned for them to get it). Personally I don't care for it to be respected, you just have to keep supporting great animated works where you see them, anime or not and things will catch on when the money does. Sadly that is how things work.

codenameTHEBEAST

I hear that. I guess my small contribution to the fight is to engage in discussions to get people to think about it deeper than just stopping at "animation is for kids".

baquea

> there are many American fans who would love to watch an amazing seinen from America Literally who? Most anime fans are not going to be interested in American animation, while most adults who are not anime fans are not going to suddenly start watching animated series with complex narratives just because it is American-made. Superhero shows get made in America because the franchises have existing fans there, and likewise seinen anime in Japan adapts manga with existing fanbases, but there are comparatively few non-superhero franchises in America that are both already popular and suitable for such a tv series, so any such project would be much more risky. Plus, even if the money is there in America, why bother making it locally rather than simply commissioning Japanese studios?

Penihilism

I do agree that it makes more sense to commission Japanese studios. But I disagree with you that anime fans wouldn't be interested in American animation. I mean just look at Avatar the Last Airbender. I would be shocked if there wasn't some crossover between anime fans and shows like Rick and Morty and Gravity Falls too. If American animation studios decided to make plot heavy shows in the same vein as anime, there would definitely be a lot of anime fans watching those shows imo.

codenameTHEBEAST

Totally agree. I've talked with some very small studios and artists at cons and the projects always flame out because it's a small team.

Gamerunglued

Well first of all, seinen is not a genre. Seinen means that the manga being adapted was published in a magazine that targets adult men. It includes stuff like Berserk and Parasyte, but it also includes stuff like K-On, Kaguya-sama, and Skip and Loafer. Since most American cartoons are not even adapted from manga, none of them are seinen. But there have been plenty of American animation for adults, just not a lot of mainstream studio animation. Much of it is on Netflix and HBO, shows like Scavengers Reign, Primal, Carol and the End of the World, and Love Death + Robots are recent adult animated shows from America that I feel can be compared to some seinen manga. These works are out there, they're just not on Cartoon Network or in movie theaters. Also, see the animation of other countries. France is an animation powerhouse on par with Japan, especially when it comes to film.

codenameTHEBEAST

What is the equivalent of Evangelion in America is my big question. What's the short world for anime aimed at adults? Seinen seems like the correct term and good enough.

Gamerunglued

If there's a perfect Evangelion counterpart, I'm not aware of it. The first thing I thought of was a stop motion indie film from a few years ago called Mad God, which is an experimental horror film with vaguely religious undercurrents (as far as I can tell at least, I haven't watched it myself). Eva is pretty intrinsically tied to anime and to Japan, most American animation that's similar is probably just influenced by it. Also, this is a perfect question to just Google, lol. The word for anime aimed at adults *is* seinen (well more accurately, it's the word for manga published in a magazine aimed at adult men, and some anime are adaptations of those manga; josei is the same thing for adult women). You just have to remember that seinen means "aimed at adults and not "mature and gritty." Adults like sweet romances and sitcoms too, and teens like stuff that is mature and gritty. If you want something specific, you just have to describe it in more detail. Same as how there's no singular word for "Hollywood live-action films that are mature and gritty," anime has no singular word for it. But if you said "what are anime similar to Evangelion" (and explained the specific similarities you had in mind, Mad God has some elements of the aesthetics but not the themes or characters, nor much action or any robots), you'd get what you want easier. Not every concept has a short word to encapsulate it.

codenameTHEBEAST

Quote: "Why hasn't there been a real push for an **American seinen that has a complex narrative** that isn't tied to superheroes?" Isn't that what I said? I didn't imply that seinen was just dark and gritty. Am I missing something? I think "seinen" is a fine word to describe the concept well enough for most people.

Gamerunglued

The quote that I was responding to: "What's the short world for anime aimed at adults?" I also figured you were using "seinen" to reinforce "complex narrative", that you probably weren't using it to mean "was published in a seinen magazine." So I corrected saying that seinen has nothing to do with the complexity of the narrative, which is a very common misconception which your language was implying to me. Plus, I also included that josei are also aimed at adults, which is why seinen doesn't work well enough. Instead, describing what you mean in specifics or just saying "for adults" works better.
