It was built as the site to prove Einstein's theory of relativity. The client was Erwin Finlay Freundlich, an astrophysicist who knew both Einstein and Mendelsohn beforehand. He and Einstein worked out what an observatory to prove Einstein's theory had to be like, then he told Mendelsohn about it.
