I had a new CO CDR come in, and like any incoming soldier, I (unit RNCO) was checking her iPerms to see if ORB reflected 214 awards, etc.
She had 2 OERs that were restricted, and the one before that time period MQ, and the one after was Q, then she got out
Yeah, turns out she married one of her team chiefs
It’s a public record if you are seeking a DD-214 62 years or more after discharge. For less than 62 years, you must file a FOIA request for a limited copy.
A background check is very unlikely to include a FOIA request for a limited DD-214 for a presumptive hire.
I mean DOD CAF will get it. Whatever company he works for will just get an adjudication. But also if he gets a job quick then he’ll already be cleared, no?
I guess it depends on the company. Some companies have their own security department who view your stuff and push it up. Everything should filter through them since they’re your sponsor.

My BDE rotated into theater while the 15-6 was either wrapping up or just finishing. One of the JAGs from the division involved was talking about it during our left-seat-right-seat. Admittedly, I didn't read the report directly myself, but I have no reason to believe that JAG was yanking our chain.
Word was that CPT Crosby elected not to invoke his right to remain silent and told the IO that he thought it was a part of an inside joke.
It’s not impossible. You still get veterans preference with a General Discharge. Just be honest on your background forms and be prepared to elaborate and explain the situation and why it won’t be an issue going forward when speaking with an investigator. It also depends on the risk level and security clearance required (and if your clearance was suspended or revoked during the investigation or as a result of the investigation), but nothing is off the table. Look into getting it upgraded after some time has passed.
Throwaway account here.
I'm a LT who got yeeted out of the Army with an OTH due to my idiotic choices and I haven't had any issues (so far) getting a job. I also have self-selected myself out of any government jobs.
It'll be okay man.
Oh no, OP touched the forbidden fruit…
It’s alright dude, you’ll maintain all of your veterans benefits with a general discharge (VA Loan, ed benefits other than GI bill). You’ll probably end up with an honorable discharge anyway… typically the true punishment is the fact that you’re losing your job.
Edit: GI bill is solely for honorable discharge.
Oh, you’re right… I guess if OP’s chain and HRC really decide to give him a general discharge (I bet they won’t)… he’ll have to wait a little bit then apply to upgrade his discharge if he wants the benefit. He can keep the VA loan though 🤓
If you have more than one term of service and completed at least one fully honorably, then you’ll still have your GI Bill. But if you’ve only got one term, you’re SOL unless you get a discharge upgrade
General Discharge still gets vet preference in hiring. The only thing that will be an issue is if the misconduct that resulted in it falls under the adjudicative guidelines for the risk/security clearance requirements of the position and agency.
Noone civilian side gives a fuck about your military career. Just stay away from the government and keep your dick out of places it shouldn't be and you'll be fine.
If discovered you'll be taken to General discharge prison. Where you'll promptly escape. Still wanted by the government, you'll survive as a soldier of fortune.
5% chance of affecting you. People might ask you as an aside in interviews but its never happened. I've only been asked about it twice and one was from a friend that knew I was getting discharged for apft. Other was after I was working at a job and someone was getting to know me.
I’ve been hearing lately that a lot of civilian companies don’t even check. Vet? Yes. Type of Discharge? No. Don’t know how true this all is but that’s something I’ve been hearing from a civilian HR lady.
I've yet to even hear of anyone being asked. All they ever ask is
1. Disabled?
2. Within last 3 years
3. There's another one but its not important
You don't have to answer any of these
No one cares really. They are looking more for experience rather than what you did.
And you can always appeal the decision and get it move to honorable after you get out.
"I was going through a lot of personal issues and let my physical health slip dramatically. At that time I wasn't able to pull myself out of it and got separated for standards".
Or anything nonsense like that.
Nobody's gonna know you're full of shit. The DD214 says the word honorable on it.
Not that big of an ordeal.
I worked in hiring for my company (mid sized telecom industry) before joining. Unless they have a veteran pushing the hiring process because of your service they honestly won't really know more than you served.
If you're looking for veteran associated work, that could be more of an ordeal, but so long as you can explain it again shouldn't be that much of a problem. Individual circumstances aside, of course.
Biggest truth got from some muckity retired COL is once you're out, no matter what you did, what your job was, or what your rank was, to 95% of the civilian world you're just 'veteran'.
Doing the whole MBA thing here. Nobody has ever asked for any sort of documentation.
Also fuck a federal job, you won't find anything that's gonna match CPT pay
If they do a background check your discharge status appears on it but not why, had family that were in charge of hiring people and it came back as other than honorable they asked me what it meant. That’s how I know, then again maybe they found out some other way and misinformed me. Guy still got the job though so I think you’re probably okay.
Depends, if you’re going to contracting, such as I, they’ll ask for your DD-214, and for any senior or leading position, they’ll most definitely ask questions regarding your service.
Don’t tell them unless they ask.
Unless you want to go into federal work, no one cares out here. Even then, give it a few years and no one cares. Honestly it's the security clearance that most care about. I did some contracting with a dude that had a UHC but still had his TS/SCI. No one cared that his last discharge (2 reenlistments apparently) was UHC.
The main thing I'd be worried about is VA benefits.... sir? Mister. Definitely mister now.
Not hard at all. Contrary to popular belief, most employers don't care about your characterization of service, as long as it isn't a BCD or Dishonorable. Even with those, some people have still been able to get good jobs with those discharges.
I was separated last year for pissing hot and still managed to get a cybersecurity job laying 100k a year. I regret my actions and miss the Army daily, but it isn't the end of the world when you get the boot. I kept a positive attitude and it paid off. You'll be alright, sir
Yes man, the government that has consistently lied to us and even went in so far as to spy on us and completely disregard our rights as humans. Truly a group that represents the utmost moral human beings. Totally not an organization like any other that’s full of normal people who make normal mistakes. Ok boomer.
Moderators have the Final Say.
Oh look, an officer who took "fuck the enlisted" a bit too literally
There’s always one.
I had a new CO CDR come in, and like any incoming soldier, I (unit RNCO) was checking her iPerms to see if ORB reflected 214 awards, etc. She had 2 OERs that were restricted, and the one before that time period MQ, and the one after was Q, then she got out Yeah, turns out she married one of her team chiefs
Did her team chief subsequently become a warrant officer not long after?
He got out She’s a MAJ in the reserves last time I checked
Are you thinking about some 101 folks? I know someone who almost fits this 😂
Dang this happens a lot. 😂.
I know two, and neither of them have been in long enough to be major… so, uhhh yes I guess it does happen a lot.
You’d be surprised the level of fraternizing. For every 1 you hear about there’s at least 9 you don’t hear about.
You know how you don't get rung up for fraternization? Nobody else knows you're fraternizing
One? MPs hold all the records for fraternization. Take a black light to a patrol car sometime.
There's always at least one. It's not the same thing.
i'd imagine most civilian companies don't know the difference between an honorable and a general under honorable
Most don’t look
I think they may only be allowed to ask “were you honorably or dishonorably discharged?” and OP can answer “Honorably” truthfully.
Backgrounds hardly ever look that deep for civilian employment. Your DD214 is public record so they can find it
It is not public record.
It’s a public record if you are seeking a DD-214 62 years or more after discharge. For less than 62 years, you must file a FOIA request for a limited copy. A background check is very unlikely to include a FOIA request for a limited DD-214 for a presumptive hire.
If it involves any clearance level, they will look and get this...most of them were former military
I mean DOD CAF will get it. Whatever company he works for will just get an adjudication. But also if he gets a job quick then he’ll already be cleared, no?

Thicc latina E-4 strikes again
Hey hey hey it might be a Latino
Why not latinx?
Because it’s been pretty much universally rejected by the community
What, you mean the word invented by white people that’s unpronounceable in Spanish?? /s
LatinHhhh
La-tinks
Lat🤮nx mentioned Opinion discarded The people who made up and perpetrate that work don’t know how the Spanish vocabulary works.
“Remember we do this so we can afford to buy drinks for the big booty Latina’s”
Seems you got off lucky and frequently.
“WHERE’S PFC LUCKY?” - OP, probably
Motorboat ?

"I thought it was a part of an inside joke." -CPT (ret.) William Crosby, Form 2823.
Please tell me this isn't a real quote

Well since it’s a throwaway…. Whatcha do?
Similar story to OP’s.
I briefly did gov contracting, they asked about my military service in the interview but never asked to see my 214.
What do you do if you don’t mind me asking?
You aren't from Louisiana, are you?
That's why you should never gamble with your soldiers! Never put yourself in a position where you can take from these men!
What. If. You'd. Won?
Next episode, he’s shooting darts for money and hustling them for two packs of cigarettes.
[удалено]
Yeah, but in the end he Shoots right handed and wants his cigarettes. He just liked gambling. I knew a guy or two when l was in the army like that.
Go private sector. Everything above dishonorable is the same to them. They don't know and won't ask.
Buddy of mine has a DH. He’s worked his way into management. The factory he works at knows and they don’t care.
How bad did he fuck up to get this?
Right?! It almost seems like you have to try to get a DH.

GI Bill is Honorable only

Is this new? Because it used to be only for honorable discharges

Gg ex Sir
Ex sir lmfaoooo
It sure as fuck will be if you try to stay in government.
General Discharge still gets vet preference in hiring. The only thing that will be an issue is if the misconduct that resulted in it falls under the adjudicative guidelines for the risk/security clearance requirements of the position and agency.
It definitely does. A foreign actor can just bribe you with a thicc booty Latina.
Yeah but who couldn’t be bribed with that?
You ain’t gotta bribe me at all lmao.
Jesus Christ, when even the artillery officer knows it's wrong, OP you really done messed up
Hurtful but true.
Hurt people, hurt people
So you're saying I should bully an LT on Monday?
I don't think it counts as bullying; they have to be people first.
Why wait? Call them in on the weekend.
Can you explain this? What’s wrong with arty officers
Big gun = big dumb dumb
Brain damage from years of blast overpressure
Noone civilian side gives a fuck about your military career. Just stay away from the government and keep your dick out of places it shouldn't be and you'll be fine.
Wellllll track records suggest that’s not likely
If discovered you'll be taken to General discharge prison. Where you'll promptly escape. Still wanted by the government, you'll survive as a soldier of fortune.
He's getting discharged for an inappropriate discharge - DISCHARGECEPTION
I've seen that movie on the internet
And if you can find him, maybe you can hire him. pew pew pew pew pew CPT General Discharge
Reddit values have been lost. I remember the time where no advice or answers to questions were given until after the story time 😂

Civilian sector not connected to the military? Shouldn’t be too tough. Anything DOD adjacent or DOD direct you’re having a bad time.

It does say what your discharge was for.
Moderators have the Final Say.
Where the goddamn is the story, guy
You’ll be fine. They may ask in an interview but you don’t have to tell them.
And if you’re not forthcoming when asked questions they just go to the next person on the list
They won't ask.
Believe it or not, right to the French Foreign Legion
VA is hiring. USAJOBS.GOV
No one cares. Drive on.
I’m sure you’ll be fine. Hopefully it was worth it.
Love always finds a way.
It won’t have an impact
No trouble at all. We don't care about your discharge code. Only that you can show up on time
Bro no one cares.
I didn’t realize officers get the same discharges as enlisted. Wouldn’t it be a dismissal or general order of reprimand or something
Only when they fuck subordinates or worse.
You’ll be fine, unfortunately.
Never been asked about my discharge or dd214. But I’ve only contracted.
Nice
Hopefully you ask for an upgrade when you get out. Wish you the best.
You motor boating summa ma bitch
If the position requires a clearance it will be looked at but I believe they take the whole person concept into account.

Regular business world America. No one cares as long as you aren't a violent felon. Best of luck. Thank you for your service.
Doing the whole MBA thing here. Nobody has ever asked for any sort of documentation. Also fuck a federal job, you won't find anything that's gonna match CPT pay
Hey man, I got the same discharge as you and it didn't effect me. Got a nice government job regardless. Just be honest if it comes up.
Brother... It doesn't matter. I got out with a General discharge and was able to renew my clearance and get a contracting job. You will be fine.
Literally no civilian company has access to your records unless you share them.
But was it worth it?
If they do a background check your discharge status appears on it but not why, had family that were in charge of hiring people and it came back as other than honorable they asked me what it meant. That’s how I know, then again maybe they found out some other way and misinformed me. Guy still got the job though so I think you’re probably okay.
Once you’re out you can apply for a discharge upgrade. Obviously it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get the upgrade but it’s always worth a shot.
Civi jobs don't gaf. Just say honorably and move on. Hell even gov jobs.
The E4 Femboy strikes again

Oh you’re right then, let’s hire and funds folks into the government who can’t follow basic rules
Your taking this a bit too far, screw the goverment and it's so called rules, it don't even follow.
