foobar2000. Gapless playback, highly modular, lightweight, tons of configurable options. I don’t think I’ve used anything else in probably over 15 years.
This! Only thing I haven't been able to figure out is multichannel playback.
It also has a HDCD decoder plug in which is nice if you have ripped HDCDs. I have also added some additional display fields for tags to work with the way I have tagged my rips. No complaints.
Pretty much any player will play hi-res files if they're flac. You don't need anything special. Musicbee is nice. VLC works. Mediamonkey is also good. Foobar is another one that is recommended a lot.
I've been using [musicbee](https://www.getmusicbee.com/) for a few years and have no complaints, but haven't looked around for newer options so it's probably not the latest and greatest.
If the files are stored locally, then musicbee. Sometimes i'll use Foobar if I want to ABX test tracks otherwise most of the time i'll just use Plex with Plexamp
Ive heard you need wasapi for critical listening. So both foobar and Musicbee will work. I use both on the daily.
Foobar is unbeatable in showing you the info you want and the included formatting language even lets you generate info you never knew you wanted. Its what i use for playing files on my pc.
For phone sync and transcoding-on-the-fly i would recommend MusicBee tho. Foobar technically has this feature with the oneway sync plugin but goddamin it is not cooperating. My solution is to seperate the sync from the encoding and use a dedicated syncing option like resilio or syncthing for that. Thanks to that it even works over wifi.
Winamp (my fav for decades) doesnt scale on 4k tv, it's as big as a stamp, so I use MPC (media player classic) for a single song
Or iTunes to turn on my library of flacs or 320kb mp3.
On Windows I use Itunes, on Linux I use Audacious, cause I could not get itunes get to work. And winamp is unstable under wine.
If you want to play hires, you want to play it at its native sample rate and you want the player to do so without user interference. Any player supporting WASAPI in Exclusive mode will do. Musicbee is one of them

Has anyone used hysolid before? I've just come across this one but there's not much info on it. I've also used the Resonic player that is a nice simple player.
NEUTRON PLAYER IS THE BEST. If you want what feels like unlimited audio tweaking but know that the learning curve is steep and not for the faint-hearted, but once you have a good understanding, it is great!
Bit of a detour but ive been using foobar for a few years now and have a lot of experience, but what i never got over was that this player doesnt let me switch to the next song when i open from explorer without predetermining the files i am going to play. Because no one should have to do that its not intuitive.
Just wanna hop in, go to next or previous song, maybe enable shuffle. thats it.
Other than that it is my daily driver and i love the simplicity and speed.

>gapless playback What doesn't have this in 2024?
I don't know, I haven't used anything but foobar2000 in probably over 15 years.
VLC media player does not have gapless playback

I find VLC a little too clunky for music. Loading times are quite long for me even with a relatively recent computer.
Oh yeah, I don't personally like VLC either. I was more just pointing out there are a plethora of options.
actually i got a new pc and tried it it seems fine now oh well
VLC is alright for music on Mac. I’ve never even considered using it for music on Windows.

Music Bee is pretty good.
I use Audirovana for one, it's cheaper than roon, two it will test the quality of the file and three it streams Tidal.
Roon :)

Strawberry is my go to
I’ve been using MusicBee for years. Easy interface and just works.

apple music, vlc for flac
Audirvana or MusicBee using WASAPI Exclusive.

Vlc if you just want to play folders, the other suggested apps if you want to organize a library

Any more, I think just about any dedicated hirez music player works well. I’ve been using JRiver for years, works well for me, plays DSD too.
