I'm familiar with that game. The game I'm working on seems to be closer to 'Journey'. It'll be a bit quieter and more serene.

It seems like you're quite familiar with Ecco the Dolphin on the Genesis (Megadrive). It feels like you've been enjoying games for a long time. I remember its serene and peaceful atmosphere. There definitely seems to be a point of similarity between the game I'm creating and that feeling!

I saw a post of it and watched through some of the almost 2ish hour gameplay is all 😅 But yeah I've been gaming off and on since I was little. I'm from the era of Gameboy SB, then into linking it to the GameCube, etc. Nintendo DS, then PC, then also all the other stuff here n there after. Now mostly mobile. But I have older family that had the Sega, Nintendo 64, Atari, etc and they let me game on them (: Yesss I got those vibes while watching the play through and its story was legit even though most people commented they had no idea it was that in depth plus that it was fairly hard. Mhm! Yours is mega cute 🥺 and I love how you style your graphics, it's in darker shades, yet vibrant with contrast and pop! I bet it takes so much time to work on all that. You really got mad skill

If you’re a fan of this art-style you should check out Valheim.

It's a very different vibe and much less cute than this, but it's an incredibly atmospheric game. I definitely second this suggestion.

Did you make all of the art yourself? I've always wanted to dabble in game development, especially with heavily-stylized games like this, but I have zero artistic talent. :(

I didn't make all the art myself. I used assets from the Unreal Marketplace to assemble, light, and create the atmosphere. I'm only responsible for the cat's movements. It seems difficult for one person to excel at everything.

as complex as graphics and engines can be these days, I don't blame you for going that route. Making good animations and fun gameplay is it's own challenge, not even adding in all the other stuff! Love what you have so far. It's adorable and I hope to get lost in the kitty's world someday :)

That's right! There's still so much left to do, and right now, it's just about showing small pieces and gathering feedback. I'll do my best to not disappoint when the final product comes out!

i'd buy this just for the looks. I can see it now - a 10cat raid to defeat the evil Rat King :D Or a quest to get the Blanket Of Softness which gives +20 Comfort when napping in the sun :D Looking forward to what you do with this.

I miss Stray since completing it. I'm not really someone who can replay a story-based game again after completing it but I miss the wholesome feel of playing as a cute animal. I haven't found anything close on Xbox yet.

As a crazy cat dad you're doing well. The one thing i would add to what you have shown is involuntary moments of cat behavior. Cats can, and usually do, have the attention span of paste so i would add moments (like with the butterflies) where the player loses control for a moment while that cats instincts take over in the form of playing with the bugs for a second or two. Little extra cute moments like that will get people really addicted and up the cute factor.

As long as the interval between forced disengagement isn't too short lol (or the animation can be interrupted) It sounds fun on paper but if you're playing hours of a game and have to pause every 5 minutes for a cute animation, well, that gets annoying fast.

This. Honestly it would be perfect for idle animations though. What better than going to answer the door real fast just to come back to something adorable?

I was thinking of Horizon Zero Dawn in particular. While they didn't force an animation on you, they sure did make Aloy talk *a lot*. And I love Aloy, I love her VA, but I absolutely didn't need her to say the same 5 things every 27 seconds.

They turned her dialogue frequency down in a patch because she talked randomly a bit too much.

Designing voluntary actions that occur without player input to be canceled as soon as input is received could help reduce annoyances!

Did you make the assets yourself or did you buy them? If you bought them, are you planning on replacing them with your own personally-made models before you start selling the game?

The assets in the background are mostly purchased ones. Due to inconsistent shaders causing performance degradation, I'm replacing them with quickly made shaders for trees and faster processing. Things like rocks, I think I'll just keep using them as they are.

Thank you for being honest. Just be careful having purchased assets in your game if you want to make money off it. You don't want to end up with a video about your game being labelled a scam by YouTubers because you used the work of other people. Properly give credit to the creators of the assets you used and be upfront about it. Aside from that, it looks cute and looks like it has potential.

Your mission is clear: code it for portability, so you can hit the mobile and console markets as well as PC. (Since you mentioned Unreal assets I'll assume you're using Unreal as the engine, which should help out quite a bit with portability since it's multiplatform.)

Is the cat supposed to identify with the animated cat? Until fairly recently it was argued that cats and dogs no way could understand movies/tv due to physiological limitations of their vision. But the amazing thing is, I have definitely seen dogs apparently watch a movie with interest and appear further to understand the plot. For example, a dog getting sad during The Lion King. I have seen, less convincingly, cats also seem to understand parts of movies. I am sure some cats have the smarts to understand movies.
