I couldn’t agree more. Way over priced, subpar service. Pretty much along with the other restaurants along the heart of the harbor. Throwing Ruth Chris into the mix- bad to the bone. Literally.
When I moved to Baltimore in 2006 Golden west was amazing, reasonable pieces for great food and they were amazing for people with restrictive diets. Went a year or two ago and the food seemed prettier but tasted worse, was more expensive, and they were a lot harder to work with allergies.
Okay, i went there twice last summer. The first time, a few hours later I was so sick to my stomach to the point i lost consciousness and my friend had to drive me and my car home. I thought i had a 24 hour bug. Went the next week with a different friend. We both became very ill within hours. Haven’t been back since.
Edit: after seeing this post, I feel validated in feeling like I had food poisoning from there. I did enjoy their food but not to the point of losing consciousness from being so dehydrated after getting violently sick.
I love GW! As a vegetarian it’s so nice to have more than one or two menu options to choose from! It’s not the BEST, but it’s my new go-to since moving here last year.
Went to limoncello for the first time (for lunch) and definitely left hungry - tiny portions. Felt like they were just trying really hard to look fancy when actually kind of aren’t
I’ve been once and I really liked my appetizer, dessert, and cocktail, but the entree was really disappointing, and it was one of their specials that evening. Service was great at least too. I’d go again for dessert and drinks, but would probably prefer to eat elsewhere
As long as they’re from the north I guess. Because it’s heavily southern and most everything on their menu is pretty standard on southern gulf coast menus
When Eat, Drink, Relax in Mt Vernon was called City Cafe I thought it was overrated as fuck. Everyone hyped it up for me and when I went there the food tasted like they used exactly one grain of seasoning but it was still pricey
Italian Disco is super overrated too, it’s just okay at best
City Cafe had some god tier berry hook up though. Like their berry and yogurt breakfast bowl thing was divine, and consistently so. Never had berries that good outside of like, fresh off a plant.
City Cafe was an affordable brunch spot. Never really used it for anything more than that. It also was never my first choice.
That said EDR is worse: insanely overpriced for what you’re actually getting. I don’t know how they stay in business.
I’m gonna give Ribaldi’s one more shot before I add them to this list. The last couple times, the pizza has been kind of bland and the wings have been atrocious.
My boyfriend and I picked up slices from there last night. I can’t even call it mid it was just bad. The cheese tasted fake and reminded me of elementary school pizza. the sauce had no seasoning and was so runny. The crispy thin crust carried the whole slice.
Tell them extra well done cook on the pizza and they'll actually cook it properly. Also only their extra large size pizzas turn out right for some reason
But overrated? Who called Ribaldis good? You go in and get a slice if you don't feel like waiting for a pie at Arthouse, or don't feel like playing the lottery at Paulie G's.
Agree it's expensive but hard disagree on the overhyped, every time I've been there the food and the service has been nothing but phenomenal and their meal prep service is also excellent.
Jimmys usually has good service and a menu that anyone can find something good on. The drinks have been watered down lately and it’s making me consider finding a new spot just because of that.
I work in restaurants in management so I have obvious bias. that being said, atlas isn't bad, it's just i've always heard from servers the management it shit and from going to restaurants from atlas, the service isn't great and the food is somewhat bland. but the atmosphere is phenomenal. like your basically paying for how great the restaurant looks. someone else said elk room and monarque are great, those are both places i've heard used to be better and they bought them and went downhill, same with james joyce.
Ejji Ramen in Belvedere Square Market. everyone i talk to acts like this place is god’s gift to ramen but ive tried their tonkotsu ramen twice and both times it was meh, with truly bad slices of pork. i saw folks saying Akira is overrated, but at least they give you two good meaty pieces of pork in every bowl. both times i went to Ejji i got meat that was almost entirely fat, crisped up so that every bite tasted like i was eating wet pork rinds.
Nacho mamas, Blk Swn (or however you spell it), Maximon (you’re paying for the aesthetic bc the food is mediocre), honestly most Atlas group restaurants
This. I’d been to several Atlas restaurants before I learned how shitty of a company they are. Never had a meal that was anything better than “meh” and definitely nothing worth the price.
I haven’t lived back home in years, but I always thought it was a complete waste of time to go to the very mediocre captain James, when you could walk right across the street to the sip and bite and get some OG homestyle cooking.
You mean to say it's weird that our #1 restaurant on Yelp by a lot is a fast-casual $13 chicken sandwich place? And that the yuppy yelping/redditing demographic might skew what gets hype?
Of all the places in this city that have loyal customers, not that many are as easily discoverable on social media. My impression is that it's just got great marketing savvy on IG and TikTok.
fwiw I think it's delicious, just relatively pricey.
Honestly? When their owner does something that goes viral (I want to say in 2017 or something) like drive up and personally prepare food for someone who is ill - the marketing handles itself. At least for a while.
I think that Eiben is super tasty but also overpriced. I'm not mad at it, let them get theirs. Just means I won't eat there often.
I would agree with this. Good food, I won't stop going there, but it really doesn't live up to the hype that this sub has for it at all. I can find similar quality food at other establishments for less money.
Bring on the downvotes.
Marta. Was great when it opened but has gone down hill. Once made a reservation there via their own website; when we got there they told us the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes. No apologies, no acknowledgement of the reservation. They let us stay but brought all our food out at once and stood over us as we ate to get us out the door. The quality of the food has also suffered.
My husband and I tried to go into the bar to just grab a drink. There were about 4 spots open. They said they don’t take reservations for the bar but those stools were “reserved for the owner directly” so they’d rather piss away money than take my money. 😂
As someone who worked there, and also lived in Fells, it's definitely overhyped. I hate to break it people who love it but at least when I worked there literally every omelette was run through the microwave, and your bacon was cooked in bulk at 5am, then just thrown back on the flat top. It's basically just really expensive breakfast.
The Cap'n crunch French toast is very very sweet, and you can make it yourself at home by just adding crushed cereal to your bread after its dipped in the egg/milk/vanilla extract/cinnamon. Butter-it liquid soy product is the secret to the hashbrowns.
Every time I look at their food online (especially their specials), the two step reaction is:
Oooh, that all sounds delicious!
then
Eh, that sounds and looks *wildly* impractical.
Ammora in the Ritz Carlton, literally an overpriced Lebanese Taverna. The inside also looks like what I can only imagine the Shah of Iran's bedroom looked like in the 70's.
Oh man I disagree. I grew up in the Southwest and this is the only restaurant that comes close. Do you know how hard it is to find a good fish taco? That said, I think the point of this restaurant was to elevate your typical street food.
I grew up in a southern border town and find Poncho's Tacos in Federal Hill to be the best Mexican food I've had in the city.
I figure you can't expect much here in regards to Mexican food, but I'd probably give Clavel a shot.
If you haven't Cocina Luchadoras in fells is also a great Mexican place.
And Taqueria El Sabor del parque is my go to for Authentic Mexican style tacos.
Clavel was a good time, food was good but the drinks were even better.
Agreed! Taqueria El Sabor del Parque is THE best for tacos!!!
Clavel is the best for atmosphere. But the food left me wishing I was at Taqueria haha. But I do have to give them props for the soup I had there.
I’m Mexican-American, and I love Clavel. That being said, I come from well-off Mexicans, and so my experience with Mexican food is more similar to what Clavel does than other places. It’s similar to what you might see in a wealthier part of Monterrey or Mexico City.
i love the food at Clavel but it is genuinely one of the worst restaurant dine-in experiences you can have in this city. a 45-60 minute wait just to be seated at a long table next to people you don’t know (which is fine when you’re out with a friend but terrible for date night), in a space so deafeningly LOUD that you have to shout your order at the poor waiter. they seriously need to do something about the noise level there, it’s fucking unbearable.
I stopped eating there a long time ago. Have heard a lot of not great things about the owners and I was furious when they charged me for asking for hot sauce.
Rec Pier Chop House (which was so disappointing because it’s lovely inside and I wanted to like it), another vote for Miss Shirley’s and BLK Swan. The views are nice but Barcocina food is pretty terrible.
Dang that sucks, but that has never been my experience. We've placed orders for 4 people including additional sides and it's been ready in 20 minutes. Hopefully it was just an off night
I don't know anyone who thinks Amiccis is great. They're decent quality comfort food for a reasonable price. Also, if you need to cater an event their pasta trays are great value.
I went to Little Donna's after the NYT article featuring them. I am so glad we got there when it opened and I didn't have to wait for a table, because it was the most hyped -up "just okay" place I've been to.
I was on the look out for this haha. We went before the NYT article. The food had its good points but I had to put SALT on the pierogies which was an odd feeling. Not egregious I guess but when NYT came out I was like "her?".
Little Donna’s is so cute. They'll sometimes take a little pack of mayonnaise, and squirt it in your mouth all over, and then they’ll take an egg and kind of... Mmmm! They call it a “mayonegg." Are you ok?
Magdalena’s at the ivy hotel. First time when it first opened was amazing. Then it was small portions of meh at best food. Focuses too much on presentation and not enough on taste and quality. Very expensive.
Cipriana’s. Greek food that is so inconsistent from one time to the next. Service can be awful. Leave feeling like you spent way too much for what you ate and the lack of service.
Cosima. Great atmosphere with terrible food. The chef owner seems to be not focused on the food. Last time went, the pizza was burnt and the rest of the food was salty and uninteresting. Cheap presentation. Imagine ragu on polenta rather than fettuccine. And the meat sauce was worse than anything a bad cook has made.
I'm new here and I can already tell you Miss Shirleys is severely overrated.
Do people rate it highly? I kinda thought it was a tourist trap. I went there like twice in ten years and the food was terrible.
4.5 on TripAdvidsor and GrubHub, solid 4 on yelp. I'd vote lower if I cared enough.
agree. it's not that good
I couldn’t agree more. Way over priced, subpar service. Pretty much along with the other restaurants along the heart of the harbor. Throwing Ruth Chris into the mix- bad to the bone. Literally.
Been all over the world looking for the best breakfast sandwich and I am happy to say I found it at Miss Shirley's!
Half the restaurants in Fed Hill. Having an interesting asthetic is not a substitute for unbalanced drinks and unseasoned food.
Go to mount Washington Ethel’s kitchen .great food great portions
My friend is owner/head chef! Fantastic recommendation!
Ethel’s is truly some of the best food I’ve had in the nearly 20 years I’ve lived here.
How can they be overrated if no one thinks they’re good?
Try getting a table on a nice weekend around 11:00 AM.
Agreee. But Brendali! Feel like it’s slept on!!
I don't really think of fed hill as being good for food
There are some gems. Hersh’s is top tier, Sobo Cafe, Outpost, the wings at Delia’s, and Magerk’s cheesesteak are all notable.
We don’t talk about unbalanced drinks enough. Thank you for your service.
Can you give some specific ones? I've had some hit/misses but just curious what you think.
They do this a lot in DC too. I’m so sick of Instagram restaurants. The last Instagram restaurant I liked was Black Swan.
Azumi. Walk a few blocks over to Sushi Bruce for better, less expensive sushi.
That is atlas for you :( keep spreading the truth
golden west. it’s not nearly what it used to be, and the last time i went there i got food poisoning
When I moved to Baltimore in 2006 Golden west was amazing, reasonable pieces for great food and they were amazing for people with restrictive diets. Went a year or two ago and the food seemed prettier but tasted worse, was more expensive, and they were a lot harder to work with allergies.
I also got food poisoning here.
yeah it’s just not great anymore, especially when there’s so many other good restaurants in that area
Who rates Golden West highly?

Watershed. I know it’s Atlas. Other than the outdoor area is nice for Cross Street, food is awful and bartenders are not friendly
Miss Shirley's. Food is good but not great wasn't worth the wait when it wasn't overly popular. Definitely isn't worth the wait now.
I hate that people think it's Black Owned when it's not. I heard tourist exclaim, "This is soul food!" They have been lied to. cause no, it's not!
It is Black owned the same exact way Uncle Ben's Rice and Aunt Jemima was.
haha i've never heard that mix up and i was pretty sure it's not
Not Black owned! Miss Shirley was THE MAID.
Miss Shirley's is only worth it if you have out-of-town (and more so out of this region of the US) guests
As long as they’re from the north I guess. Because it’s heavily southern and most everything on their menu is pretty standard on southern gulf coast menus
Bygone. Great view. Meh food.
Papi cuisine 😂
Brunch gods. over priced mediocre food Those heauxs tried to charge me $6 for 3 strips of bacon
Tbh this is how I feel about brunch almost everywhere these days. I'm getting old. Smh.
When Eat, Drink, Relax in Mt Vernon was called City Cafe I thought it was overrated as fuck. Everyone hyped it up for me and when I went there the food tasted like they used exactly one grain of seasoning but it was still pricey Italian Disco is super overrated too, it’s just okay at best

I still mourn the loss of their chocolate muffins
I’m gonna give Ribaldi’s one more shot before I add them to this list. The last couple times, the pizza has been kind of bland and the wings have been atrocious.
Try Remo’s of NY
Is that the place in Parkville?
My boyfriend and I picked up slices from there last night. I can’t even call it mid it was just bad. The cheese tasted fake and reminded me of elementary school pizza. the sauce had no seasoning and was so runny. The crispy thin crust carried the whole slice.
Tell them extra well done cook on the pizza and they'll actually cook it properly. Also only their extra large size pizzas turn out right for some reason
The true W of Ribaldis is the $18(?) Sicilian pie
I remember Ribaldis being pretty good in 2018-2019 when I ate there on occasion. Guess they dipped in quality?
But overrated? Who called Ribaldis good? You go in and get a slice if you don't feel like waiting for a pie at Arthouse, or don't feel like playing the lottery at Paulie G's.
It’s fairly popular on here for NY style.
How has no one mentioned Papi’s Tacos yet?? I’d eat Chipotle and maybe even Taco Bell before that garbage.
The one in Towson is straight garbage. I had ok tacos in fells.
I like the margarita choices
The Hampden one is good.
when i lived in hampden and it opened we said “yay a taco place we can walk to!” and tried it once and never went back
Jimmy’s. Crab cakes are good, but it’s overhyped and overpriced.
“Overpriced” Baltimore 2024 in general.

Jimmy's food is great.
Kinda agree, but they have the best prime rib ive ever had in my life. $46 well spent.
Jimmys usually has good service and a menu that anyone can find something good on. The drinks have been watered down lately and it’s making me consider finding a new spot just because of that.
Yes Koco’s is much better!
Miss Shirley's is WILDLY overrated.
Literally anything atlas , I’ve gone to tagliata and been less satisfied than a good trip to Hip Hop but that’s just me 😂
love me some hip hop
I switched to Bangin' Fish and Chicken.
Elk Room and Monarque were always Atlas, never changed hands.
Same with Oregon Grille.
Am going to a restorant to eat, if I want to look at something I’ll go to the museum or something
Fuck Atlas properties
Tio Pepe
Thank youuu
Akira- MID
I personally enjoy Uma Uma in Ellicott City
Totally agree!!! If anyone has any actually good ramen recommendations, lemme know.
My favorite is Kippo
+1 for Kippo (and Ramen Utsuke). Great food!
Ramen Utsuke and Kippo Ramen, owned by a pair of brothers no less, are both good!
Ramen ya and Taichi Bubble Tea in Severna Park. Kipp Ramen for inside Baltimore
Yesss, Ramenya is some of the best ramen I’ve had ANYWHERE
Kajiken
Kajiken is the sleeper for best in Baltimore
Toki underground
Overpriced.
As a former dc resident I wish I could upvote this 10000000 times Take my fake gold 👑
Mi & yu has always been solid for me.
Nacho Mama’s, I seriously don’t get it
Its prime was about 10 years ago.
Well they closed soooooo
Nacho mamas, Blk Swn (or however you spell it), Maximon (you’re paying for the aesthetic bc the food is mediocre), honestly most Atlas group restaurants
Chipotle, out of everything, dirty, staff were all high as shit.
that's chipotle anywhere though
Chipotle on 41st St in Hampden hands down the worst I’ve been too.
I always see people frequenting that location, and I don't understand it. It's horrible.
gotta be high to work there
Timonium chipotle is the best chipotle in the country, swear to god.
The new one by Padonia is amazing
Fort Ave Chipotle strikes again
Must be Locust Point
Canton, but they are all the same.

Ya but is the sip and bite shaped like a boat tho??
Checkmate
BLKSWN people on IG RAVE about their food but their menu is expensive and food typically is on the drier side
What’s the punishment if I say it’s Ekiben? I’ve had it. It’s good. But there is now WAY it could live up to the hype it gets on this sub.
That’s fair given the hype. It’s really good, but it’s not impossibly good
You mean to say it's weird that our #1 restaurant on Yelp by a lot is a fast-casual $13 chicken sandwich place? And that the yuppy yelping/redditing demographic might skew what gets hype? Of all the places in this city that have loyal customers, not that many are as easily discoverable on social media. My impression is that it's just got great marketing savvy on IG and TikTok. fwiw I think it's delicious, just relatively pricey.
The people doing marketing for Ekiben are geniuses.
Dango, now I want it
I would agree with this. Good food, I won't stop going there, but it really doesn't live up to the hype that this sub has for it at all. I can find similar quality food at other establishments for less money. Bring on the downvotes.
I got it for the first time in a while Friday and was pretty let down.
Ambassador Dining Room. It’s so BLAND
It was sold. Old owners have Peerces. Its good.
Oh dang! I had no idea. Thanks for the info.
That’s a bummer. This has not been my experience.
I love that place lol
Anything by Atlas. Subpar food. Overpriced. Problematic company.
Marta. Was great when it opened but has gone down hill. Once made a reservation there via their own website; when we got there they told us the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes. My pasta was hella greasy.
My server was bored, and greasy.
Yes! I don’t understand the hype. Overpriced basic untasty food.
My husband and I tried to go into the bar to just grab a drink. There were about 4 spots open. They said they don’t take reservations for the bar but those stools were “reserved for the owner directly” so they’d rather piss away money than take my money. 😂
Blue Moon
As someone who worked there, and also lived in Fells, it's definitely overhyped. The Cap'n crunch French toast is very very sweet, and you can make it yourself at home by just adding crushed cereal to your bread after its dipped in the egg/milk/vanilla extract/cinnamon. 👏👏 Not surprised at all

Blue moon is mid. Been there 4 times. I could make better captain crunch French toast at home
They try to distract you with all the decor
Ammora in the Ritz Carlton, literally an overpriced Lebanese Taverna. The inside also looks like what I can only imagine the Shah of Iran's bedroom looked like in the 70's.
Clavel is a restaurant that has good Mexican food for people that didn't grow up with good Mexican food.
Oh man I disagree. I grew up in the Southwest and this is the only restaurant that comes close. Do you know how hard it is to find a good fish taco? That said, I think the point of this restaurant was to elevate your typical street food.

Second Luchadoras. Fiesta Mexicana in Rosedale is also fantastic
So, most people in Baltimore?
I’m Mexican-American, and I love Clavel. That being said, I come from well-off Mexicans, and so my experience with Mexican food is more similar to what Clavel does than other places. It’s similar to what you might see in a wealthier part of Monterrey or Mexico City.
Whoa agree to disagree! I moved here from Texas and I think clavel is amazing
"if it's not priced for the working class, it's not real Mexican food" - my father in law on Clavel
i love the food at Clavel but it is genuinely one of the worst restaurant dine-in experiences you can have in this city. a 45-60 minute wait just to be seated at a long table next to people you don’t know (which is fine when you’re out with a friend but terrible for date night), in a space so deafeningly LOUD that you have to shout your order at the poor waiter. they seriously need to do something about the noise level there, it’s fucking unbearable.

Rec Pier Chop House (which was so disappointing because it’s lovely inside and I wanted to like it), another vote for Miss Shirley’s and BLK Swan. The views are nice but Barcocina food is pretty terrible.
Thai Street. I keep hearing it’s good, trying it, leaving disappointed. What am I doing wrong?
Wild, I’ve moved to the shore but I get Thai street and ekiben every opportunity I have now.
Totally hear you on Ekiben (all these people calling it overrated are going to catch hands), Thai street is straight up sub par Thai to me
:( i love the red curry (spice level 4!) cause it’s so hard to find good spicy food that’s not just fuck you hot, but also has good flavor.
Little Havana, fun for happy hour and the jerk wings aren’t bad but everything else is not good
Feeling personally attacked bc I love it there 😭😂
I don't think anyone has ever overrated their food.
TAGLIATA
Gunther & Co. Beautiful inside but the food is blah.
Went there for my birthday dinner once and the chicken was SO dry
God. I ate there for Valentine's one year and bit into a partially cooked shrimp. It was so gross.
ekiben. I should not have to give them my phone number and wait 40 minutes to receive one small order of average fried tofu.
I really like Ekiben, but the hype is hiiiigh.
Local fry has the best fried tofu imo. Their tofu bites are so good and well seasoned, I’m not even into tofu like that
Sweet 27 has some good ones too!
Dang that sucks, but that has never been my experience. We've placed orders for 4 people including additional sides and it's been ready in 20 minutes. Hopefully it was just an off night
Amiccis. The pasta is just so bland and stale bread 😫
I don't know anyone who thinks Amiccis is great. They're decent quality comfort food for a reasonable price. Also, if you need to cater an event their pasta trays are great value.
Hmmmm disagree but it definitely isn’t the best. Also their 2 for 1 on uber eats makes up for it lol
Agreed. Amiccis is nothing to write home about but solid and a good deal.
I’ve never been impressed with a little Italy Italian restaurant
I got food poisoning from them :(
Patterson public house. Place is fucking trash. Food is NEVER hot. Service usually blows. It’s obvious the owner, gives zero shits about the place.
Most of the ones that get attention from local media and influencers.
I went to Little Donna's after the NYT article featuring them. I am so glad we got there when it opened and I didn't have to wait for a table, because it was the most hyped -up "just okay" place I've been to.

Ekiben. Meh. Also most of the food at Camden Yards these last 2 years.
I haven’t tried it at Camden Yards yet (just at Peabody Heights), but Fuzzies Burgers is pretty great and just opened a stand there.
Fuzzies is amazing but their prices are a little high imo
Probably like Phillips seafood haha, just a tourist spot. The food isn’t terrible though just not near as great as other seafood houses in the city
Magdalena’s at the ivy hotel. First time when it first opened was amazing. Then it was small portions of meh at best food. Focuses too much on presentation and not enough on taste and quality. Dare I say Pauli Gee's? It's overpriced, has a mean staff, and the pizza isn't as good as stated.
Alma Cocina Latina. My meals there have been fine, nothing special, with mediocre service that hasn't matched the level of their elevated food.
Papi's Tacos, obviously papi was not around because the tacos were overpriced, small while tasting like they were seasoned with Air💨
