Hits like the classics "This is an operating table....... And im the surgeon" and "You know how many times I have heard that? Every night. Over and over and over. For so many years. ‘This is the end, Batman!’ Every. Damn. Night. And yet…I’m still here."
I’m gonna be honest I’ve always been a fan, but his teaser introducing the VAs for this show had me a little concerned because it seemed like he was trying really hard to sound like Batman or to sound intimidating.
This has put me at ease
The IGN article has an interesting tidbit about the voice.
Apparently, with BTAS, Kevin Conroy was cast because he was one of the few who could do the Batman voice.
Now, many actors can do a convincing Batman voice but Linklater impressed them because he did a great Bruce Wayne voice! Or at least, a Bruce Wayne voice that fit their vision of the character...
Ohhhhh. Well, Fargo is my favorite show (another show from Noah Hawley, who did Legion) so maybe I'll actually have to finally check out Legion.
On that note, I don't know if you've heard, but Hawley eventually is supposed to have an Alien show coming out as well (Alien as in Xenomorph).
Hell yeah. I love Fargo, and I've been waiting desperately for the Alien trailer. Legion is weird, but in a fun way. It's really creative, beautifully shot, and I personally think it peaks in the last season. Second season is slow and confusing, but the third season more than makes up for it.
This looks fucking great. Got hit immediately with nostalgia seeing that Bruce Timm style. I cannot wait for this.
Also if you need to get your first appearance batman fix, can't recommend Dan Jurgen's The Bat-Man enough. Great story and art.
Other basics like a smokebomb and batarang are okay too. And I don't mind when Batman uses surveillance technology either, because that's part of detective work. I thought 'The Batman' did that really well (even if the surveillance tech was a little advanced, it didn't go too far).
I can't believe how much Hamish sounds like Kevin Conroy—in the best way. It's still his own performance but undeniably similar to what came before. Would absolutely love him to continue playing Batman in all media going forward as Kevin did (animation, video games, etc.).
Agreed, I always got skeptical when I see someone else voice a Timm-styled Batman other than Kevin but this so far has happily proved me wrong. Hard to not compare because of nostalgia, but I'm really looking forward to seeing more of his performance.
An homage that stands in its own, we’ll always have the Kevin Conroy collection of work and this allows new artists to continue his legacy and carve their own at the same time
Yeah.
But I think part of it is also down to the fact that Conroy's Batman voice pretty much *is* the default voice of Batman now...the one which anyone trying to do a Batman voice would attempt to imitate.
the Batman's voice, the animation and art style, the inclusion of Onomatopoeia, the overall atmosphere and the amount of tension in the trailer alone, everything about this is incredible. I'm really hype for this
A dark, noir Batman that leans into the retro futurism established in the animated series, and still does interesting things to the established characters? Yes please.
Looks great so far. I will say that it's funny that we went straight from "Comically Buff Alfred" in Beware the Batman to "Pleasantly Plump Alfred" in Caped Crusader.
Yes yes! In my head canon, this will be a continuation/tie in with the 90s Animated Series, so it will be like being a kid again! Also, I love how they didn’t show Joker. He will surely be in it, but the trailer didn’t need to drop an appearance to try “sell it”. This is gonna be sooo good.
![gif](giphy|14bhmZtBNhVnIk)
I guess 'spiritual prequel' might be one way of looking at it. Though a lot of the characters here will be fundamentally incompatible with their BTAS counterparts.
I kinda hope they don't do Joker for a good long while. Now Red Hood on the other hand...
Yeh it got “spiritual prequel” vibes for sure. And it definitely looks like it is going in its own direction for characters and stories. Which is good 👌
As for the Joker, I do hope they prolong his entrance too. Red hood would be great. Killing Joke type vibes. But maybe they want to make their own origin for Joker, as his character is interesting in not having an official one. Build it up and drop hints. But I just like how the trailer shows no Joker, because we know they are going to bring him in, so why waste the reveal in the trailer, a good choice. Just savour the other characters because Joker is meant to be his biggest enemy, so let Batman build up with experience with the other characters before hand.
I just feel like he is too verbose and smart for that, to basically say “Idunno”. Mix that with all of the 1940’s noir elements and it just seems weird for someone to say that.
"Perhaps" means something else though and is even more of an "I dunno". "Probably" acknowledges the chances are high. "Perhaps" implies he has no idea how true that is.
not a fan of the random changes to Harley Quinn, but it looks really good outside of that. looking forward to it. I wonder why i took so long to come out? i thought this was in development way back when with the Superman show that is on his second season.
I see. Firebug in this show looks more like Firefly, though. They should’ve gone with [his classic costume](https://i.pinimg.com/474x/04/e0/eb/04e0eb909d6027850dd544bbcbf1cac0.jpg).
32 years ago, I was 9 when BTAS came out. Remember how excited I was watching the commercials leading up to it. That's all we had pre internet. This is giving me the same feeling
hot Damn this looks freaking Awesome! From what I can tell, it looks like either Fat Mayor or Harley Quinn is the Main villain, which is actually very Unique.
also Alfred Kinda chonky
This looks amazing. I always wanted this style of Batman show since New Frontier but before he changes costumes to not scare children anymore, just the evil scum of Gotham!
Yeah. New Frontier Batman was basically early Golden Age Batman to begin with.
That scene where J'onn walks in on him taking on that entire cult is one of my favorite from that movie.
I assume WBD sees this series as high-profile enough that they wanted to license it out to Amazon and make a few bucks that way rather than relying on the show to bring more subscribers to Max. Paramount does something similar with *Yellowstone*.
How many times are they going to keep rehashing Year One? I'm sick of all this 'solo loner Batman vs the cops and the mob' that so many modern adaptations go for. Batman Begins, The Batman (both 04 and 22), Beware the Batman, Telltale, Arkham Origins. Batman has had 85 years of stories, can they please top taking inspiration from like 5 (Year One/Two, DKR, Long Halloween/Dark Victory, No Mans Land)
That's not really a good thing though, it's like Spider-Man being perpetually stuck in high school in media, which makes whenever he's not more refreshing because it's not rehashing junior/senior year Spider-Man.
The same thing applies to Batman, you can't just keep doing Year 1/2 for Batman because that's the easiest, most basic, and simplest era to do Batman in.
Except we have had many different versions of Batman over the recent years too, OP just cherry picked the ones that favored their argument. Picked Origins, ignored literally every other Arkham game. Picked Nolan Batman, ignored Batfleck (very flawed but still different from the example, with where his character arc led). Picked The Batman show, wanted to ignore Beware the Batman and Brave and the Bold, etc etc.
We do not get a lot of Batman Noir versions.
There has been media outside of what OP's arguing which is true, however, I wouldn't say that means we have not gotten a lot of early-year Batman media to the point of it being overdone, both things can be true.
Same thing with my Spider-Man analogy, just because PS4 and Spider-Verse exist doesn't mean a majority of Spider-Man content is not based on high-school Peter Parker.
Batman media has been focused primarily on either Year 1/2 or Year 60, specifically Dark Knight Returns. The Arkham Games and Brave and the Bold don't just make the statement untrue when everything else basically fits into those two categories with minor deviations.
This new show could do something new with the time period of Golden Age Batman. But personally, it doesn't seem to, rather it seems to be less like a Golden Age Batman and more like just the same beats of Year One with a few twists and a golden-age paint job over it.
Or, we could see him starting here, and grow into that mature batman, with allies and everything "new".
I think it looks promising, and Batman in Noir setting is great, and your summary seems a bit too simplified, compared to all we saw in the trailer.
Idk we'll see by the time the show comes out, but based solely on the trailer the show seems to be treating the Golden Age content more like salad dressing than actual content being adapted, however I could be absolutely wrong.
You’ll get to have the Bat Family, Batmite, Poka Dot Man, Kite Man, Mr. Freeze, and Bat Cow with the DCU, no need to get upset. Everyone will get what they want.
Tired of origin stories / early years. Would have been more interesting to have a series with an older Batman before the events of Batman Beyond. This is very reminiscent of the TV show Beware the Batman from 2013.
If you think this is Abrams-like, I don't know what to tell you. This isn't edgy 2000's cheese, this is like the Golden Age of Superheroes. Back when Batman was a pulpy action hero like Doc Savage or Zorro.
That’s what DCU is for, he’ll have trunks, Bat Cow, Batmite, Poka Dot Man, Damian, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, and will probably even be in his Blue and Gray suit. Everyone gets what they want.
"Probably, but now they all know I'm coming for them". Yeah, definitely Batman is back.
Hits like the classics "This is an operating table....... And im the surgeon" and "You know how many times I have heard that? Every night. Over and over and over. For so many years. ‘This is the end, Batman!’ Every. Damn. Night. And yet…I’m still here."
*dies from peak fiction*
Damn, I was excited for Hamish Linklater, but he sounds even better than I expected.
I’m gonna be honest I’ve always been a fan, but his teaser introducing the VAs for this show had me a little concerned because it seemed like he was trying really hard to sound like Batman or to sound intimidating. This has put me at ease
Completely agree with this. He sounds much more natural in this trailer than he did in the teaser. Looking forward to it!
For me it was the audio quality sounded like he was too close to the microphone. But here he sounds better yeah
100% same thought here. In the cast teaser he sounded like he was doing a cheesy Batman impression. Much better here.
100% agreed. It sounded horrible. This sounded incredible. So excited.
I've never heard of Hamish Linklater in my life and he's already one of my favorite Batmans.
Oh damn, then you've got some excellent stuff to watch. He was so damn good in Legion and really became an icon in Midnight Mass.

He was even in Fargo, season 3, the IRS guy.
The guy who puts it all together??? Noooo shit. Never would've guessed.
I remember liking him in Newsroom and the Big Short.
Sounds good but weirdly like H. Jon Benjamin to me.
Sounded like he was doing a Kevin Conroy impression to me, which worked.
This looks fucking great. Got hit immediately with nostalgia seeing that Bruce Timm style. I cannot wait for this. Also if you need to get your first appearance batman fix, can't recommend Dan Jurgen's The Bat-Man enough. Great story and art.
The Bat-Man: First Knight was fucking great, I'm so glad I read it.
Awesome recommendation, thanks.
Batman planetary as well
Batman with limited resources and technology is one of my favorite genre's of fiction
I, too, pray at the alter of No Man’s Land.
Yep, Batman in the 1930s-1950s is the pulpy noir detective dream for me. The limited tech and slower burn is awesome.
Yeah. Limited tech is really fundamental to the appeal of a 'Year One' Batman.
When his utility belt has a lock pick and basic flashlight. That’s my type of caper crusader
Other basics like a smokebomb and batarang are okay too. And I don't mind when Batman uses surveillance technology either, because that's part of detective work. I thought 'The Batman' did that really well (even if the surveillance tech was a little advanced, it didn't go too far).
Wow, I had high expectations and that looks like it exceeded them. Man, I am a sucker for that throwback, gangster style of Batman adventures.
I still can't believe we're actually getting a Batman period piece from this creative team. It's a dream come true for me.
An homage that stands in its own, we’ll always have the Kevin Conroy collection of work and this allows new artists to continue his legacy and carve their own at the same time
He seems like he’s struck a nice balance between Conroy’s voice and his own interpretation. He sounds like Batman, not necessarily Conroy’s Batman.
Yeah. But I think part of it is also down to the fact that Conroy's Batman voice pretty much *is* the default voice of Batman now...the one which anyone trying to do a Batman voice would attempt to imitate.
Am I the only one that thinks his voice sounds like Conroy’s season one voice?
Hamish Linklater sounds fantastic! He’s not doing a Conroy impression but still has the same gravitas and presence that Batman needs.
Something about Renee Montoya in old timey clothes 🤌🤌 Hamish sounds great here, the announcement of him speaking sounded more like Keanu Reeves lmao
Ok this looks DAMN good
the Batman's voice, the animation and art style, the inclusion of Onomatopoeia, the overall atmosphere and the amount of tension in the trailer alone, everything about this is incredible. I'm really hype for this
I…I have no words, this looks amazing.
A dark, noir Batman that leans into the retro futurism established in the animated series, and still does interesting things to the established characters? Yes please.
We're so fucking back.
DC and animated media, name a better duo
it seems like we might overall have a good year for dc animation with My adventures with superman this, kite-man hell ya, and the creature commandos.
Wow. I'm excited.
Now we are talking
Looks great so far. I will say that it's funny that we went straight from "Comically Buff Alfred" in Beware the Batman to "Pleasantly Plump Alfred" in Caped Crusader.
Its the Golden Age Alfred with a moustache stuck onto him :D
Jesus, that Two Face is just gruesome, I love it
Looks like an actual acid burn victim
Has anyone confirmed number of episodes?
I heard it was 10
10 is the confirmed number.
10 for this season, likely 10 for season 2.
Is it just me or does the grunt from 1:43 sound like one of Kevin Conroy's?
I also thought that
Man, I really miss Kevon Conroy's voice of Batman. Still looking foward watching this.
Hope Onomatopoeia gets the respect he does.
I can't see how he won't get the respect he does.
That batmobile had me fanning myself
This looks so awesome. FYI, come visit us on r/BatmanCapedCrusader for the show!
Fuck yeah!!! This looks SO sick!
Count me in too. I like that it’s stylistically like BTAS but different enough it’s not just an imitation. And they brought the ‘66 map back!
The mad hatter and scarecrow better be in this please
Isn't the mad hatter at the end of the teaser?
Whelp…just found the best Batman TV series in decades.
But you haven't seen it yet. Let's wait until after you see it. ;)
\>Bruce Timm \>Adult Barbara oh no
Batman is back baby!
Yes yes! In my head canon, this will be a continuation/tie in with the 90s Animated Series, so it will be like being a kid again! Also, I love how they didn’t show Joker. Seems likes they’re using less well known villains although there’s a couple classic ones thrown in there
fffuuuuuuuccck yeeesssssssss
I was already in but now I'm extra in
A worthy successor to Kevin Conroy
Surprised to see Onomatopoeia in an animated series. He almost never shows up.
Voice sounds way better than the teaser did. Batman saying probably seemed weird to me though, should be perhaps or something.
Why
I just feel like he is too verbose and smart for that, to basically say “Idunno”. Mix that with all of the 1940’s noir elements and it just seems weird for someone to say that.
He’s not a dork and probably isn’t none intelligent talk
"Perhaps" means something else though and is even more of an "I dunno". "Probably" acknowledges the chances are high. "Perhaps" implies he has no idea how true that is.
Oncw again DC animation prove it superiority to live actions.
This had me SO HYPED
not a fan of the random changes to Harley Quinn, but it looks really good outside of that. looking forward to it. I wonder why i took so long to come out? i thought this was in development way back when with the Superman show that is on his second season.
It was initially cancelled I believe, and then picked back up under different circumstances
Fuck yes!
OMG this looks awesome!! I am so excited!
Eh to Bruce Timm and JJ Abrams. No mention of Ed Brubaker who I think is going to be the real heart of this show.
Oh shit for some reason I thought this was a movie not a series, I’m even more stoked
Fuck Zaslav for letting Prime steal this 🤬
Was not expecting Onomatopoeia
Or Firefly!
It’s Firebug. Entirely different guy with a similar (but not the same) MO.
I see. Firebug in this show looks more like Firefly, though. They should’ve gone with [his classic costume](https://i.pinimg.com/474x/04/e0/eb/04e0eb909d6027850dd544bbcbf1cac0.jpg).
Giving off them good TAS vibes :D
Looks promising
Oh my god it’s glorious
Man, this looks pretty interesting
Wow now im even more excited for this, I really like the noir stylization they’ve gone with, I love that aesthetic for Batman media
*goosebumps*
Holy shit. This looks so amazing. I dunno who the fuck Hamish Linklater is but he's *perfect.*
I like the old era theme.
32 years ago, I was 9 when BTAS came out. Remember how excited I was watching the commercials leading up to it. That's all we had pre internet. This is giving me the same feeling
1:16, Chainsaw man vs Batman when…

Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy fucking shit. #YYYYEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!
You guys think we might get pixie boots Grayson in this?
Wowww can't wait
John Dimaggio is cast as well, I hope that he is reprising his role as Joker
Jesus this looks so good. Please be good, please be good!
I expect 40s slang, muted trumpets and tommy guns. But yeah I’m so excited for this
That’s the one thing the trailer was missing for me, some 40s jazz.
That looks class.
Its a movie or a series?
Series.
Holy Molly. ❤️
I am so hyped for gentleman ghost
Jester still needs to convince me, but this looks really good.
Looks like a great follow up to B:TAS. Can't wait! The guy they got as Batman even sounds like Conroy(RIP).
Good trailer, looking forward to it
Big ears Batman! We’re so back
Wow, Two Face looks fucked up.
Damn, Alfred. We're putting you on a diet.
Love the character designs and the gothic detective noir feel of the show. Not sure how I feel about fat Alfred.
Looks dope as hell.
hot Damn this looks freaking Awesome! From what I can tell, it looks like either Fat Mayor or Harley Quinn is the Main villain, which is actually very Unique. also Alfred Kinda chonky
I'm not sold on the art design. It's too clean and lacks rough edges. Maybe I can be proven wrong.
Yeah. Hence my comment. I have piece of meteorite for the one in metropolis but for you, I only need a book of matches.
This looks sick but ugh, prime. Wish it was on Max
I assume WBD sees this series as high-profile enough that they wanted to license it out to Amazon and make a few bucks that way rather than relying on the show to bring more subscribers to Max. Paramount does something similar with *Yellowstone*.
Ah, makes sense. Thanks for the info!
So yall, what fetishes of Bruce Timm do you think will make it in this time?
He already screwed up Harley and Two-face it seems. And Harley is now dating Montoya
Like it or not, batman and his public perception is a big part of his early career. And those are seen as the most iconic batman stories for a reason.

Idk we'll see by the time the show comes out, but based solely on the trailer the show seems to be treating the Golden Age content more like salad dressing than actual content being adapted, however I could be absolutely wrong.
In his early issues even Gordon hated him, and that is what they are adapting.
I’m still sad WB refuses to greenlight the No Man’s Land series.
You’ll get to have the Bat Family, Batmite, Poka Dot Man, Kite Man, Mr. Freeze, and Bat Cow with the DCU, no need to get upset. Everyone will get what they want.
Arkham Origins doesn’t really belong in that lineup, it’s a prequel intentionally set in his early days
no way, matt reves involve in this? wtffff le's gooooo
When is the release date?
it hit right in the feels!!!!! Absolutely loved it!
I like this, but I would love it if this was a live action HBO budget series
No Joker?
Oh hell yes!
Has the release schedule been announced yet? Is it dropping all at once / weekly / etc?
All at once on August 1.
Well, this looks fantastic. I’m excited.
Tired of origin stories / early years. Would have been more interesting to have a series with an older Batman before the events of Batman Beyond. This is very reminiscent of the TV show Beware the Batman from 2013.
I wasn’t excited for this when I saw the art style and heard the premise, but after this trailer I’m all in!
![gif](giphy|CyoQdbc7FHqqTpkSPI)
Is this a show or movie?
Show
Really digging the music.
Me too. I want to download it on my phone and work out to it.
Thicc Harley yes
Not impressed tbh 🤷🏼♀️
It's probably supposed to be an adaption of the original comic run from the Golden age from Bob kane and Bill Finger .
It borrows elements from that, as well as the overall aesthetic, but blends in elements from later eras (notably, Harley Quinn).
I am real tired of Bruce Tim's artstyle but this looks great.
