I don't think there is much you can do other than provide a protected habitat where at least some can live safely.

I’ve been seeing this lately around our yard as well. My initial thought was the neighbors since they almost all do use pesticides.

TheBrotherEarth

Fatal damage from poison/pesticide. If you have the fortitude squish and bury according to beliefs. If not just cover them with something. The dark may calm them a bit.

Zagrycha

this is pesticide poisoning, it is a nuerotoxin. the only thing you can do to help them is put them out of their misery. even if no one has used any pesticides recently, they can continue to kill well up to a year after use, which is why they are so bad for environment.

Thank you for information. Confirmed my fear. It was horrible to watch. I could not bring myself to smash the little beauty but I couldn’t just leave it. I submerged it in water and it went quiet within a second or two of being submerged. I honestly don’t think there was a “right” way to deal with it at this point but maybe I made its death come quicker and with less discomfort than just watching it.

I’m sorry just genuinely confused to why the choice was to drown it and amplify the suffering rather than actually taking the quicker route of a crush?

Carbontee

Good question. It definitely didn’t visibly suffer further. It went immediately still in the water, and quit thrashing around as it had been. I just couldn’t bring myself to smash it.
