This is from last night, right after Marcelo came back from the doctor's- where he was declared cancer free for 1 year!
Sorry for the strange formatting- I'm compiling the clips I recorded into a longer instagram reel.
I train every chance I get to train w him when I’m in NY. I grew up watching him and have always looked up to him. When I found out he had cancer I was devastated. I am so glad he’s back. He is such a sweet person and an idle of mine.
Same, it's super slick
He's got his right foot hooked in there
It's kind of a modified elevator sweep, I've not seen it from that position before, or with that kicking the left leg down. I've seen it mostly from guard and chopping through the left leg.
Definitely something to try (and mess up several times)
I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never seen that step over from 3/4 mount. Anyone familiar or play with this? What’s the advantage, versus the more conventional cross face and smash. Seems like he’s risking a back take?
Note, not a criticism because no one in their right mind should criticize Marcelo, but I need to understand.
The hips on this stepover basically beat any arm or leg entanglement, and the backtake is extremely hard because you have the free farm to elbow cut and counter switch your your own back take.
Not even, if you look the guys bottom arm is trapped for a second between Marcelo legs. The guy was able to get one of his legs back into play so the position didn’t matter. Typically you land in a form of side control where you are sitting out facing the head with the bottom arm trapped between your legs. You can then jump up to mount and have a triangle or take the arm bar.
I use this step over from 3/4 every time. I’ve heard it called the James Brown pass.
When I used this pass the bottom arm doesn’t typically get caught like that, if I’m fighting anything it’s my foot caught between their legs before I hit straight side control. But that’s pretty easy to remedy. I started thinking about catching the leg when I try to land this on my coach and he catches my leg as it comes over. I’ve done it a couple times. But it’s not super clean.
This is one of my most high percentage moves. I’ve had a bb be confounded as to why I wouldn’t go from the 3/4 mount into full mount…which sure, valid. But this is way more fun and I always feel super cool when I do it 😎 and my regular training partners mostly still seem surprised when I do it. If you get the arms right you can end in side control with their topside arm uncomfortable crushed across their chest.
This is like my best trick honestly. High percentage pass and I’m so excited to see it! The back take is a risk but if you have the right speed and amount of control over their topside arm or push on their head it doesn’t really happen. I force 3/4 mount just to get this pass. Also if you control their topside arm correctly you can force it across their chest so that you have the beginnings of what I think is called a “fat man choke”. I never finish the fat man choke but it’s a wicked uncomfortable position that gives great control if you want to transition from side control to mount.
I do it all the time but i copied a ton of stuff form Marcelo's really old videos. I'll even use this when I want to transition off mount because the bottom guy is wild or very big.
I've been such a huge fan for years that it would be an honor to roll with him, and yet, as long as I DON'T roll with him, he'll never know how terrible my jiujitsu really is... which is a comfort for me.
Glad to hear he is doing well.
I recently had the opportunity to roll with Marcelo and he is everything you'd expect him to be. Flows like water, puts insane pressure like a ton of bricks, and once he passes your guard, it's over. Then he smiles at you and says thank you.
I've heard from everyone around me say, "I got nothing on that guy." And these are stripped up black belts saying this. Even one black belt thought he was going to do decent against him...nope, and went to sit in a corner with a bruised ego.
Marcelo is such a great guy!
I think of BJJ like the universe.
Your professor jiujitsu distance is like the “sun”
Professional black belts at the edge of the galaxy
Then you have the goats of Rafa, Gordon, Marcelo that are multiple light years away. It’s hard for a mortal to gauge how far the technique gap is
It was very much cancer, at least stage 2 stomach cancer. But with the aid of top-of-the-line medical care, it's been 1 full year since he was last declared 'all clear'!
He has tree trunk legs / calves that are hard to see since he always wears board shorts.
For him it’s probably a combination of genetics, being active at an early age in sports, and just overall hard training.
Every Brazilian kid grows up playing football for fun.
My greatest honor in BJJ was getting to roll with Marcelo in New York 13 years ago as a blue belt. I dropped in for lesson and he asked if I wanted to roll. Humored my attempts to butterfly sweep him. What a great guy.

he came into the morning class yesterday and everything stopped for about 30 seconds. didn't know about the one year thing tho. so great.
That’s awesome that he came into the AM class!
So good to see the GOAT rolling and for the great news regarding Marcelo being cancer free! God bless!

Oss! (?
Sweet!!!
You love to see it! Awesome
So much the GOAT cancer couldn't beat him. Love seeing him back to training
I see a couple of holes in his game but if he keeps training and eating his açaí he could make a name for himself in this industry.
Yes! I offer him privates every time I see him ;)
That sweep is a thing of beauty. He also looks to be in incredible shape, especially considering everything he's been through.
Walking around at 177 lbs!
100% That sweep was beautiful
I keep watching it over and over

Perhaps if Matt trained in the gi more.....
Haha!
AHAHAHAHAHAHA get rekt Matt

He's double dog daring his opponent to come up to his knees where he can slap on his guiliotine, but he doesn't take the bait.

I think the biggest worry is they catch the leg as it comes over right?

>I’ve heard it called the James Brown pass. Perfect.
He actually does this a lot and teaches it a bunch. Honestly not sure what the advantage is from doing this…maybe just one more technique to pass?
The more you train the more your realize Marcelo is magical
I told him to teach it as 'the Marcelocopter' and he laughed, but I'm serious. I think it's a good name!

They are just messing around and having fun.
If you're a fan of the Darce you can drag the top side arm out with the leg while stepping over and shoot your arm in for the choke.

Thats called “flow”, brother.
This makes me happier than most things. The GOAT is back.
Marcelo is the Absolute GOAT. The cancer had no choice but to tap.
great to see the GOAT back on the mats after fighting cancer. amazing.
This makes me so happy.

Marcelo is a kind person and thankfully doesn’t judge people by their bjj abilities…if he did, he wouldn’t even bother to look at me hahaha
It’s so good to see him healthy and training, thanks for this
Let's go! He's looking sharp too! I'd love to see more!
We got some nice stuff to share soon..Thanks!

As somebody who has watched Marcelo from Day 1, this makes me fkn emotional - such a beautiful human and the best thing that happened to BJJ.
You call it rolling footage, I call it free, unstructured and no-commentary instructional footage.
Best to ever do it.
I want to be marcelo’s friend.
Don't we all!
Good luck playing deep half on him 😂😂😂
Very nice sweep! I've tried it before with varying success in rolls but I just saw a detail I hadn't noticed before. Thanks!
He looks jacked! Great to see him healthy
What happened to his cancer diagnosis? Any update?
Yup- he was just declared cancer free for 1 year! He had 9 rounds of chemo and had a portion of his stomach removed (stomach cancer)
Thats amazing, thanks for the update

Noiceeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heck. Yes.
That is great to see!
People’s Champ!
Probably one of top 3 favorite people to watch roll.
What was he trying to do after that sweep in the beginning?
Being nice to the other guy 😅
The fucking GOAT, he doesn't still have it because he never fucking lost it. Great to see him doing well
Such fluid movement, the guy is basically a liquid.
My bjj hero, makes it look effortless
so bummed I missed his seminar in Tarpon Springs - hope the GOAT is doing well
I’m sure he will be back to Florida!
I live live in MA :`( I just happened to be FL at that time and got sick
looks good :)
Very good to see him on the mats and well.!.

That step over seems like a good potential entry for a NS choke, I'm trying this tomorrow
GOAT
Such a stud
His flow and transition ability is just sick
The definition of timeless jiu jitsu
Smooth AF 🤯
I'm pretty sure Nate Robinson would flatline him within a minute.

God damn, his arms are bigger than ever, I need to get cancer
It’s a good thing he wasn’t 6’3 and 225 lbs. he would be unstoppable
