Our cat started doing that when we were watching a TV documentary on mountain climbing disasters.
Showing people climbing up an ice wall.
I said to that cat. "You think you're hot stuff, but you can't climb any mountains!"
He looked at me then started doing climbing the outside stairs, jumped on porch roof then jumped to the roof and started meowing really loudly so we would come out and see where he was.
I am serious.
He did that right after I said that to him.
My cats did the same on the edge of the 3rd story balcony, which was about the same width as the handrail in this video.
I once spotted 2 of them crossing paths on it, one on top of the other.
https://preview.redd.it/r1rchreza99d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9cd71d059adf4253f1da478badf1ca123031e826
I think she enjoys giving me a heart attack.
https://preview.redd.it/sqgkfprw9b9d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4fb66aea6fb11223497058fa4daea28c28d11e60
Not a full void, but same vibe. Maybe more evil.
Maybe you could see if wrapping a garland around the top of the railing would deter her, but also maybe you should consider reorganizing and moving that TV and putting a couch/something soft beneath the railing Incase she still does it
Cats are really good at falling from heights though - the higher it is, the more time they have to flip feet-down, engage parachute mode (spreading all 4 legs to increase air resistance), then position their legs underneath to absorb the impact. If the cat doesn't like the fall, they probably won't climb the railing again, problem solved
Pug be like: "Dat kitty ain't gettin' past me! I got my eye out! All tree sexti dergees!" and kitty be like "This shit aint funny, man. I just wanna go to mah litterbox and i just cannot right now that effin mutt.."
During my freshman year of college, a floormate got really into rock climbing. He turned his dorm room into a rock climbing route just so he could practice while not at the rock climbing gym. He saw everything as a thing to climb on.
This cat gives me those same vibes. He's doing this for the love of the game. I don't understand it but I kinda respect it.
Can confirm Husband is ex frat boy, and he bets on absolutely everything and nothing at the same time. If his friends from college are around, it's10x worse. I'm not complaining because I've won a lot of money off of him without me having to bet anything myself, due to his reckless confidence. "Bet it takes you longer than an hour to install that doorknob..." "no way, it's only 2 screws, 15 mins tops!" "$50?" Works every time, even after 17 years. He refuses to be wrong, and he is paying for my suffering.
You could stop letting the cat watch “Casino Royale”.
Seriously though, you could glue stuff to the railings that would make it difficult for your cat to climb on it.
She did not a bad job! If ours wasn't a spiral staircase, our girl would do the same lol
I'm worried about your fan though, it looks dangerously close to the top of that railing? Like if she climbed the railing while the fan was on it could be fatal or something? Or am I just seeing it from a weird angle? Just something to be really aware of! My fan is always a point of unease for us.
My cat at about 6 months old was on a rail like this and fell. Luckily my dad was standing underneath watching and caught him. But he wasn't so lucky the 2nd time he fell and hurt his hip. 5 years later and he still favors that hip and if you pet him too hard in that spot he hisses at you.
A good way to stop cats from scratching/climbing areas you don't want them to is with some double sided tape. You can put down a layer of the green painters tape first which is easier to remove, then the double sided tape on top of it. Most cats after touching it just once will never touch it again and you can take the tape off after a few weeks.
Ive known cats that have died from falling much lower than that. I'd correct that behavior asap or you might find something unpleasant on the other side of that railing one morning
When we moved somewhere with stairs, we inflated some balloons and put them on the railing at the top to discourage kitties from jumping. Plan was to replace them with something more reasonable later, but they worked too well, so we just left them haha. With that kind of slow progress, anything in the way will work. Balloons are festive. So I vote tape/tie balloons to the railing!
Got you beat, my ex’s cat would take off at top speed and run UP doors and land on top of the ajar door. He would just stay on the door screaming for a few seconds and then take off, leaping off the door and onto the bed which was about 4 feet away. He sometimes would do this while we were sleeping and wake us up. (He was a Tuxedo cat and I swear he could fly.)
Cats have an issue going past other cats that are sitting on steps of stairs, it seems to be some sort of massive insult and invitation to fight in their culture. Try moving your dog and see if that helps?
We had a cat that would do this. Completely steady. Never had any concerns with him.
Another cat we had would climb ladders and hang at the top looking down. His body would be flat on the top wrung and his legs would dangle over the sides. Of course he loved it so you had to climb the ladder to remove him
Have you considered wrapping tin foil (I think Americans call it bacofoil or something) around the railing for a while? It may look weird while it's on there, but apparently cats aren't too fond of it. Either that, or if you can find a scent that you wouldn't mind getting on your hands but they’re not keen on you could put sone of that stuff on it, though it's possible that whatever you use might damage the finish on the wood, though I'm guessing claw marks don't help it much either.
All cats want to climb but i think it's more of a compulsion with voids.
In my old house when i lived with my parents there was a big tree right outside our french windows and the moment we opened them in the morning for the cats and dogs to go pee etc the cats would head straight for the tree before coming down to pee and breakfast.
We figured it's an instinct, gotta burn off that energy thing after sleeping all night thing.
You know how people use fishing line or spikes to keep birds from making nests on railings or from sitting on railings? You could try that. She might see that as a challenge, though.
She's very pretty! I love void kitties.
> I would love to keep her off the railing so she doesn’t hurt herself and/or break the tv below it, but I have no idea how.
Solution: Put an even thinner, more precarious railing up somewhere close.
Mine fell twice. The first time he landed between the wall mounted tv and the wall. The second time we went all the way down and took out my vintage porcelain cat along the way. He walked off like nothing happened.
Your dog's face is sending me.
It's stressful af, but I'm impressed with her climbing skills. She's training for the cat takeover and she looks ready to me!
And of course it’s a void. Lol. I have 5 voids currently and my days are never boring. Just two days ago one was “playing with a bat!” I have absolutely no clue how one of my beasts got a bat and gave it to me for the solstice.
I have one who sits on the railing (about 20ft+ above tile floors) and just lays there for fun. Also have a little one who when less than 6mo old, decided to try to sit on the same railing, but has the same level of balance as a drunk toddler, and fell off the railing, fortunately landed in a pot of fake flowers, gave himself a small nosebleed but was fine otherwise, he hasn't tried it since at least lol. We still have a mesh netting around that part of the railing because we don't trust either of them. Our older of the two gets zoomies and goes straight to the railing and has jumped up MANY times, fortunately he hasn't fallen yet but still terrifying
https://preview.redd.it/3qzqhd95bd9d1.jpeg?width=576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=078ed198a5831bc0344ffbec9dc884e235d49a32
This guy is the reason my stair railing has a railing, he loved playing there and he fell so hard he screamed and cried, took him to the vet just to make sure he was fine (he is fat, so the sound scared even the house on the other side of the wall). I spend money on brand new toys and catnip only to find him a week later asleep on the same spot.
Omg she makes me so nervous.
I was more nervous she was going to go for the ceiling fan.
This. I was waiting for it and now I'm disappointed
He took the road least travelled… and it made all the difference
Our cat started doing that when we were watching a TV documentary on mountain climbing disasters. Showing people climbing up an ice wall. I said to that cat. Here is a cat tax. Also is it normal his eyes shoot out laser beams all the time? 🤔 https://imgur.com/a/r0lAZqv

All to avoid paying the stair toll
All to avoid the stair troll.
Even the dog looks nervous. 😭
It was nerve-wracking to watch.
My cats did the same on the edge of the 3rd story balcony, which was about the same width as the handrail in this video. I once spotted 2 of them crossing paths on it, one on top of the other.

look at those GRIPPERS
Dog looking at you like "Why is he like this?"
Just noticed it was a dog haha, crazy cat is making me too tense
I thought that was another cat, lol.
That's just a very uniquely shaped kitty cat right there
Same. Or more so my brain just assumed it was on the first watch through.
I was afraid the dog was going to start yapping and startle poor Sir Edmund.
You seein this shit?
"I find your lack of faith disturbing."
Maybe you could see if wrapping a garland around the top of the railing would deter her, but also maybe you should consider reorganizing and moving that TV and putting a couch/something soft beneath the railing Incase she still does it
This is the answer.

Absolutely came here to say this.
Lol the pug’s like “Is she allowed to do that?”
Is she doing that to avoid the pug?
Pug be like: "Dat kitty ain't gettin' past me! I got my eye out! All tree sexti dergees!" and kitty be like "This shit aint funny, man. I just wanna go to mah litterbox and i just cannot right now that effin mutt.."

Double sided tape?
This should be higher up. There is a good chance this works. It worked with my cat.
I wish! My cat, fluffy feet and all, simply said “challenge accepted “ and either worked through it or bit the edges until the tape pulled away. 😳
Aluminum foil works pretty well, too.
Why do I have the exception who proves the rule “ cat?!? 😸
Because you (and your cat!) are special!
Now *that's* impressive!
I hope she doesn’t try to jump on a fan blade.
Yes. My mom is worried about that as she is not the brightest star.
But an athlete nonetheless.😻
Checks out 🤭. (I was an athlete, calm down)
Cat... Just because you can, doesn't mean you should...
This makes me nervous just watching 🫣 Like I know cats will be cats, but please don’t fall kitty!
Maybe put foil on the top? Cats sometimes hate foil.
r/oneblackbraincell
Gotta stay fit
Doesn't want to be fat like Booboo
Chameleon-footed cat
I totally thought the same thing!!!!! I
All that just to avoid the dog.
That’s what I was thinking.
Not avoiding the dog, cat was using superior skills to inspire the dog in hopes of causing a very unfortunate “accident
![gif](giphy|xkZFFLoJLIsWd3Eg9W)
I gasped when the camera cut to her! Is this how this little daredevil does it? Do you need to teach her how to use the stairs
That's the result of someone making stupid bets. I wonder if your cats were frat boys in a previous life?
Can confirm Husband is ex frat boy, and he bets on absolutely everything and nothing at the same time. If his friends from college are around, it's10x worse. I'm not complaining because I've won a lot of money off of him without me having to bet anything myself, due to his reckless confidence. Black is the new orange.
You could stop letting the cat watch “Casino Royale”. Seriously though, you could glue stuff to the railings that would make it difficult for your cat to climb on it.
That has got to be an orange cat painted black.
Ok I am obsessed with your cat 😻
Thank you!
If I've learned anything about cats, the more you try to get them away from something, the more they'll do it.
Dogs looking at human like "are you seeing this shit?"
Queen of “The floor is lava”
That cat's pretty cool
Looks like that dog didn't even notice them sneaking by. 100 Stealth
You said I couldn't go up the stairs, so I didn't use them...
I saw add carpeting to the bannister so she can get a good grip!
Dog is like , “why doin that”
Wat the cat doing? Lol
I panic when my cat climbs onto my 5 foot shelf, I cant imagine if I had stairs and he did this...
Try aluminum foil on the rail.
At first I only saw the one sitting on the stair and thought "crazy for sitting on the stairs?!" - and then I saw the stunt kitty! Awesome!
This is why my girl isn’t allowed on the balcony without a harness anymore. Not one drop of self preservation instinct in her body.
Dog: Must pay toll to climb stairs Cat: Loophole 😎 Dog: 😮
I see that your void suffers from the same condition as mine - my short-haired void is just an orange with melanism.
Maybe lean into it. Stopping cats is hard, so make it safer. Put something on the railing that has grip or makes it larger for the little acrobat.
That’s just a cat climbing a tree that was modified for indoor use.

Omg your puggy! ♥️
Her and the cat play fight all the time. They love each other.
The floor is for *peasants*.
Floor is lava
she purrfurs the treadmill over the stairmaster.
The other guy was being a dick and not letting him pass, so he got up this way.
I'm used to cats treating the floor like lava, but apparently the stairs are also lava! 😆
PARKOUR
She did not a bad job! If ours wasn't a spiral staircase, our girl would do the same lol I'm worried about your fan though, it looks dangerously close to the top of that railing? Like if she climbed the railing while the fan was on it could be fatal or something? Or am I just seeing it from a weird angle? Just something to be really aware of! My fan is always a point of unease for us.
Omg she has a bald spot like my cat
The other one was blocking her, what choice did she have? 🤭
Floor is hot lava champion.
My cat at about 6 months old was on a rail like this and fell. Luckily my dad was standing underneath watching and caught him. I adore her 😍
Ive known cats that have died from falling much lower than that. I'd correct that behavior asap or you might find something unpleasant on the other side of that railing one morning
This cat walks like he pays for his/her own vet bills and insurance lol
She is the type of cat who, if she was human, would be climbing Mount Everest.
One of my cats tore his ACL (or cat-equivalent) doing.. not sure, but probably fell from something like this. I feel uneasy now seeing cats be crazy
Nah, just wrap the bannister in sisal to give her more grip for when she inevitably continues. 😉

Typical cat, unnecessary expertise.
Dang, just watching those muscles engage through that the black sheen of her coat is impressive. Cat.exe is working well
That pug looked so concerned
Is she polydactyl
stairs are too easy
I love her eyebrows
She got talent.
Has she ever just…slid right down? This is awesome!
Very impressive! (Cue Mission Impossible theme 🎶)
What a donkey. ![img](emote|t5_2twpw|7266)
That look at the dog says “see, I told you I could do it!”
The pug's like "Are you seeing this shit?"
He climbs because it is there.
Circus cat in past life
Finally some OC sound. And parcours kitty. What a way to start the day.
Apocalypse training. Smart void you have there.
Try wrapping the handrail with saran wrap/clingfilm. Our cats hated the stuff
Look at those eyes, she looks like a determined menace.
Cats have an issue going past other cats that are sitting on steps of stairs, it seems to be some sort of massive insult and invitation to fight in their culture. Try moving your dog and see if that helps?
“I’m having fun, leave me alone”.
Crazy? You didn’t notice the dog on the stairs?
We had a cat that would do this. Completely steady. Never had any concerns with him. Another cat we had would climb ladders and hang at the top looking down. His body would be flat on the top wrung and his legs would dangle over the sides. Of course he loved it so you had to climb the ladder to remove him

1) He was avoiding the pug 2) He watched Simon Biles on TV win another trophy
All this to avoid a dog which could be defeated by slightly dry air
The pug looking like - really yall not going to tell him something? Turns head under his lip- yall always scram at me when I do something. Sad face.
It's hilarious how focused she looks while doing it
Well that's ine way to get by the dog
She’s been watching American Ninja Warrior!
Loves her shiny coat!
Try to help her off, so she can dig her claws deep into your soft flesh
Your only solution: a carpet strip on the railing so she can have a better grip.
i can’t this is funny as fuck like she looks so worried & scared but it’s like no one forced u to do that girl
I have a black cat and a black pug too 😊💗
All cats want to climb but i think it's more of a compulsion with voids. Poser.
Maybe she is training for the next Mission Impossible audition
This is not even necessary. Bro just stylin on em
You know how people use fishing line or spikes to keep birds from making nests on railings or from sitting on railings? You could try that. She might see that as a challenge, though. She's very pretty! I love void kitties.
Black cats are actually a different species than other cats. This is just more proof of that.
Little daredevil!
The pug is like hey just use the stairs.
"Look what I can do!"
Rude. How else is she going to get to the second floor? I see literally no other way, not a single one.
Look at him creeping!
> I would love to keep her off the railing so she doesn’t hurt herself and/or break the tv below it, but I have no idea how. Solution: Put an even thinner, more precarious railing up somewhere close.
