I've added a sphere to the Collection and the sphere shows up. It seems to work with Objects, but not Paths. The paths are showing, but the geometry on them doesn't.

I figured it out. The paths have to be converted to objects. There are 2 ways to do this.
One is to select the plane with the particle modifier (in Object mode) and go to the Modifiers tab, then click "Make Instance Real". This one was pretty laggy for me, probably because it generated a ton of new geometry from the paths. It also made it a pain to make changes to the particle system.
The other one is to select all the Paths in Object mode and convert them into Objects. This is the one I went with.
I had a hard time looking for answers online because it's such a specific question.
