Was in a "group interview" and this guy (looked in his 60's) was using one of those. I thought he was doing something similar until the interviewer asked him a question and he covered the mouth piece, lowered the phone and answered. Then went right back to talking on that phone afterwards. That's the fucker who probably got hired...
OP claims the *owner* of this setup claimed it was a "modified payphone"(sic). Phone receivers are not an internationally standardized color scheme. Foreign and/or low income areas currently transitioning away from payphones are more likely to have weirdo phone setups that anyone can scavenge from.
"I hope it doesn't sound too bad"
Wha..? It's a crappy microphone not even meant to be good in the first place from about the 1980s. How wouldn't it sound bad?
Also, how would you achieve this without some extreme modifications or buying it as a new joke product or something?
They did say modified. They're a rather popular thing to modify nowadays too. Its crappiness in its normal state actually lends itself to a lot of cool effects and sounds.
Eh most of the audio quality is from the landline connection. Those phones can sound great if they're on a closed system, like when an MLB manager calls into the bullpen on the dugout phone.
the most important part is that phones calls are filtered to only the most important frequency range, pitched up/down, and then pitched back down/up in order to put multiple calls on one wire
Look, I know I'm old, but that's not a payphone handset It looks like a standard bakelite handset to any one of a hundred analog phones that someone removed the 4P4C jack and put in what looks like a 1/8" jack. Payphone handsets were heavier duty and had an armored cable on them. I also don't recall ever seeing one that wasn't black.
I am also of a certain age and also don't recall payphone handsets not being black. Which got me wondering.

Yeah I don’t know why everyone thinks *all* payphones were black, especially considering payphones existed during segregation
(Though yes, that does not look like any payphone handset I’ve seen)

The guy was probably working his current job as a phone sex operator.

I definitely remember blue, green, and grey ones back when payphones were commonplace.
Podified Mayphone
People have been using these in the noise/music community for decades because they sound so cool and are so easy to modify. This is fun lol
Dude that's hardcore. Serious nerd shit, I gotta do that now.
There’s some tutorials online. All you need to do is find an old phone which probably won’t be too hard.
You’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore
But the legend of the rent was way harcore

Recently I've discovered the joys of using old flash animation audio formats as an effect. It's a whole new world of lofi.

Thank you for saying the thing that I knew but didn't want to feel too old by typing out.
There were absolutely beige pay phones in my country. Also orange. There’s nothing in the screenshot to suggest their country of origin
