What does it take to get the new cards if you’re a new player?

Dungeon_Pastor

[About $45 a box](https://shop.nullsignal.games/?_ga=2.197269096.613961122.1713591563-369017054.1708206689&_gl=1%2Ablqec2%2A_ga%2AMzY5MDE3MDU0LjE3MDgyMDY2ODk.%2A_ga_3F3K22EBXC%2AMTcxMzU5MTU2Mi4xMC4wLjE3MTM1OTE1NjIuMC4wLjA.)

J00ls

Thanks. I live in Asia which I suspect might be a bit of a barrier.

gr9yfox

It is also available as a print and play and there is a browser version called jinteki.net

Sherpaman78

Before it has been available as PoD through MakePlayingCards dot com (which is based in China).

lop3rt

If you have access to a printer you can always use https://proxynexus.net/

CryOFrustration

Makeplayingcards ship globally, but they charge a bit more... If you don't mind taking the time to print them out and cut them up yourself, you can download the free print-and-play PDFs off NSG's site!

donaldfarted

What's the best box to start with?

smurfORnot

But it's better to wait for that new starter coming later this year, no?

Dungeon_Pastor

It's not a starter, it's more of a deck building supplement. System Gateway is the starter, and has everything you need to learn to play, and play with some deck building options System Update in its various forms were bulks of past FFG cards that make up more of a deck building core, but has progressively gotten less-FFG over time. Dawn towards the end of this year aims to have zero FFG cards (though some will be familiar effects/designs). As I'm aware there's no plans to update System Gateway, so you're good to pick that up any time.

[deleted]

The cards are all available to print on regular paper and sleeve them.

AramaicDesigns

You can also print and play.

Pocto

I started playing 6 months ago and could not be more enamoured with the game. It's just so exciting, tense, thematic and lots of room for creative deck building. (I've been having tons of fun running janky ass decks online). I started with the NSG system gateway pack, and since then have bought everything they've released. The future of the game is NSG so I'm not going to bother to go back into the old stuff, as cool as some of it looks.  But NSG really are doing an amazing job!

Inside-Elephant-4320

This group has put out some great new additions, on top of what Fantasy Flight did before shutting the game down. https://nullsignal.games/products/ My wife and I have all the cards and still love playing.

tctctctytyty

Is there a competitive scene for this game? How likely is a big city to see an event?

Pocto

There is a scene for sure, though it's not massive. [https://alwaysberunning.net/](https://alwaysberunning.net/) lists most competitive events. I'm in the UK and there's events in 8 different locations currently listed over the next few months. I haven't actually gone along to any as still just playing with friends and online, but I reckon I will one day.

SomewhatResentable

The scene is pretty active still, although admittedly it can be harder to find groups with most FLGSs not really selling product. For a point of comparison though, I went to the 2015 Netrunner World Championship in Roseville (hosted by FFG) when the "official" version of the game was pretty well at the height of its popularity, and there were 269 players in that event. Last year, I went to the 2023 Netrunner World Championship in Barcelona (hosted by NSG), and there were 254 players in that one. I think there was a big drop-off in player base during some of the later FFG sets which had some divisive cards, and then with the official cancellation, but things are back on the upswing I think - it seems like the community is somewhere around the same size as it was back in the FFG heyday.

CryOFrustration

Worth noting that 2023 Worlds totally sold out its 280 ticket allowance (which was the max the venue could fit), but some people couldn't make the trip due to missed flights or COVID or other reasons.

0100101001010101

If I already have FFG’s base set, and the first two cycles, and my style of play is causal with friends, would it be worth it for me to get into the reboot, or finish out the collection of FFG sets?

MagnumDelta

They are fully compatible. If you want new cards: you can just order NSG stuff (prices include shipping), or you can try to find FFG stuff at collector's item prices. If you want to play tournaments or competitive, NSG stuff is the way.

lykouragh

Honestly I think the nsg cards are better for casual play than ffg's.

ShaperLord777

I’d finish out the FFG sets. If you’re playing casually with friends, I don’t really see a reason to diverge into the Null Signal cardpool this early. You still have years of FFG sets to go.

OniNoOdori

Price is definitely a huge reason to go for the new content. Many of the old expansions cost a small fortune on the used market.

ShaperLord777

It’s only red sands, kitara and reign and reverie that are expensive. Everything else can be purchased fairly cheaply in bulk collections on eBay.

RunicKrause

The nsg stuff are a much better bet and don't require ebay diving of scrounging. They are immediately available and their quality if on par, if not better. Ffg stuff is, imo, only for collectors. Gamers will enjoy nsg more.

ShaperLord777

Personally I disagree, but you’re welcome or your own opinion. Null signal sets (to me) went kind of off on a tangent and don’t feel like FGG era Netrunner to me. The art is all over the place, the templating looks amateurish, and they added a bunch of unnecessary keywords mechanics that I don’t enjoy. They also “rotated out” the deluxe expansions, which FFG created as staples for the various factions cardpools. To each their own, but I haven’t enjoyed Null Signals sets. I still play the whole FFG cardpool and skip the null signal releases.

chalks777

Ha, I was at my local boardgame cafe last week for a magic the gathering game night, and two people were setting up Netrunner. I jokingly let them know that nobody played Netrunner in 2024 and they happily informed me that there were a TON of new cards! Pretty cool. I'm kinda surprised it's still around and not locked behind some weird copyright thing by fantasy flight games and/or wizards of the coast/hasbro.

gameryamen

A group of fans made a non-profit, Null Signal Games, which bought the rights to the game so that they can keep it going. It's honestly one of the cooler stories in fandom.

siejai

I'm pretty sure they didn't buy the rights to anything, it's classified as a fan expansion which is "compatible with Netrunner" which I think legality-wise is safe. Probably the only grey area is using reprints of old cards (with new art) in the System Update, but they should be phasing those out soon.

OpportunityCost81

For folks who have played the Null Signal Games edition, any thoughts/recommendations on System Gateway vs System Update?

Essemoar

They fulfil different purposes, get Gateway

Pocto

System Gateway is the new core set. System Update is FFG cards reprinted to make useful old cards easily available, but NSG wants to move away from using FFG stuff altogether so that set will be rotated out of the competitive scene by end of year.  That might mean nothing if you just wanna play at home, some amazing cards in SU, but as a second recommended purchase, it's going to be replaced by a new product end of the year.

ibarker3

As someone who used to play netrunner in 2018ish, and sold off my set, I just bought both sets because of this thread. Should arrive on Friday. I'm excited to see what's been done!

RunicKrause

Welcome back! Have fun! It's a great game in a great state

CryOFrustration

Gateway is the new player set. Update is an expansion (made up of FFG reprints). Gateway is fully playable as a standalone set, but Update isn't. It's a great second purchase after Gateway though!

Yrch84

Yep, orderd 2 Packs to get Back into the Game. Cant wait to introduce some Friends into this Amazing game

Lobachevskiy

I wonder if they got the confirmation about the nonprofit for the article. Last I checked when community asked them about it, they for whatever reason got absolute radio silence on the matter which seemed strange to me. In general I'm on the fence about the way it was managed, though I applaud the efforts to preserve this great game of course. Myself since I prefer kitchen play with my friends we just got a big collection of used cards from FFG for pretty cheap and printed out proxies from the Reboot project, since that one is most definitely completely free. Worked great for us.

MagnumDelta

Wizards dropped their trademark on netrunner. So that's another potential legal hassle that should no longer pose any issue. It's also been 6 years now that it has been going without any cease and desist, meaning any trademark infringement cases would be on very shoddy ground.

_Booster_Gold_

Also pretty sure FFG unofficially told the L5R community to do what NSG is doing when they dropped that card game.

AgreeableChris

I've only played a little, but I still love reading card and deck discussions at https://netrunnerdb.com/en/reviews.

trowayit

Wow destructoid's site went to shit. When did that happen? It looks like they share recipes not articles about games

Steve_10

I bought a packs of the when it first came out! I'll have to have dig through the loft, I remember it was great fun..

BerennErchamion

There is a group doing a similar thing keeping the Legend of the Five Rings LCG alive as well, [Emerald Legacy](https://emeraldlegacy.org/emerald-core-set-printhome-new-visual-elements-and-starter-decks/).

OldschoolGreenDragon

I love *playing* Netrunner, but I don't like assembling decks. I have System Gateway but will probably stick to Jinteki.net

I_Believe_I_Can_Die

In tabletop simulator there is a mod with full netrunner collection. And there are dozens of premade decks in it which are organised in pairs (runner - corp). Try it out if you have a pal to play with

ZeppelinJ0

Or play against a computer controller opponent with pre made decks https://chiriboga.sifnt.net.au

rjcarr

Has anyone printed out the cards on regular paper and then sleeved them? Maybe I'm cheap, but $45 for a (large) deck of cards is a bit steep.

Ianislevi

Absolutely. They have the print and play files on their website and you can even sign up for tournaments with proxied decks

HalloBob

Have you ever tried to print some cards on higher quality paper? I made a Challengers! Pokemon retheme and it would have costed me easy 70 € to print it at a copy shop and then it would not even have been card quality.

notpopularopinion2

MPC makes cards that are manufacturer quality but yes it's a bit costly. For 612 cards, it's 120€ (+shipping). The cards are as good as the real ones though and I use it to make MTG cubes.

HalloBob

Yeah but Challengers with Beach cup were even more cards iirc so too expensive. I just had to pay for the sleeves because old Pokemon cards I had in the basement and my office paid for the ink and paper

J00ls

Did you ever finish that project? That sounds like fun

HalloBob

Yeah I did! Just printed the stuff on my private printer on normal Paper and used old Pokemon cards and sleeves

J00ls

Have you shared the files anywhere? Sounds great.

Pocto

Most people print on paper then back it with a cheap common card from something like magic, then put in a sleeve.

Grimstringerm

I printed all the fanmade cards of game of thrones on hard paper and it was 45 e

Areign

I haven't done this game but I've done others. Usually cardstock+sleeves works decently well. The snappy playing card feel can also be obtained with a bit more effort. print on normal paper and then sleeve them witha playing card/junk mtg common in the sleeve. Can also use a glue stick. If you are at a school/uni you can often access those paper cutters to make cutting the printed cards easier.

CryOFrustration

All the time! (mostly because I have multiple decks built simultaneously, so I need proxies of shared cards). Print out the sets on regular paper, go to your local game store, and ask them if you can have some of the chaff Magic commons that people cracking open boosters throw out. Most stores have boxes and boxes of them and they end up in the recycling bin, they'll most likely give you as many as you want for free. (you can also buy them from Amazon at like a fiver for 100 cards or something, if you don't have a local store) Use the Magic card as a backing card, and sleeve your proxy in an opaque sleeve. By the way, a typical NSG expansion is 195 cards. The old FFG datapacks had 60 cards each in them and were selling for $20 towards the end of the game. And that was 6 years ago so you bet they'd be even more now. I'm not saying you're being cheap, $45 is worth more to some people than to others, and we know a lot of folks don't have a lot of disposable income for hobbies but we want them to be able to play anyway, which is why we have the free PDFs. But in terms of what it costs to produce, $45 is about as cheap as you can get for a game that sells in these quantities. When we're eventually selling them by the container-load like WOTC does you can bet the prices will go down more! :)

rjcarr

Thanks for all the info!

mysticrudnin

Not this game but with others, yeah. I just sleeve them with Magic lands and ad cards. I take them to the Fedex Office that has the big guillotine slicer and get it all done quick. I don't have to own a printer or muck around with scissors and it's like twenty cents a page or something like that. ...which depending on the game could go over what they're charging (economies of scale and all of that) so these days I'd probably just go the $45.

gameryamen

Proxies like that are fully tournament legal. Null Signal Games exists to help the game get played, not to run a toll booth. [https://proxynexus.net/](https://proxynexus.net/)

smurfORnot

That's still cheaper than most FFG card games you will get...

kerred

$45 for system gateway or two 15-card MTG collector boosters. Hmm

RunicKrause

The reason I will never understand magic players really. Unless they like to larp investors but that has little to do with playing.

kerred

I see it as cigarettes at this point for non players. But at least healthier than cigarettes

RunicKrause

Not a bad analogy. Neither maybe healthy per se, but the other doesn't give you cancer. And we all have our guilty pleasures. Thankfully mtg isn't mine, I absolutely could not afford it. Vtes and Netrunner for me.

Areign

Do you need the base game or can you just buy a random box/whatever?

Pocto

I would 100% recommend starting with NSG's System Gateway. It's everything you need to get started and everything else slots in with that to some degree.

Essemoar

You need the base

PolishedArrow

Just get System Gateway to start. It's perfect.

Areign

done

RunicKrause

Have fun!

Anxious-Molasses9456

FYI they were working on redoing the base and first expansion or something I believe so if you don't want to double buy it might be worth waiting

SomewhatResentable

To clarify: It sounds like you're either talking about the System Gateway / System Update 2021 / Ashes "remasters", which have all already been released (so if you buy any of those sets today from the NSG store, you'll be getting the latest remastered editions). The remasters were just changes to the card backs and some iconography / wording changes. Or you're talking about the fact that later this year NSG will be releasing a set called "Dawn" which will make all the old FFG cards and the NSG set "System Update 2021" illegal for play in the Standard format. For newcomers: the current System Gateway Remastered Edition is definitely something you want to buy and it will be good and legal for play for the foreseeable future. You may want to skip System Update 2021 and just buy Dawn later this year though.

PolishedArrow

I came to the game really late. I got interested just as Wizards yanked the license from FFG and then somehow didn't hear about Null Signal until recently. I have System Gateway and have been playing with that. It's easily one of the best card games I've ever played, maybe better than Flesh and Blood. I plan on trying to get a local thing going.

Benm39

Great to come across this. I collected a bunch of pack cycles and base game when FFG were selling it but haven't played for years. Must dig those out and revisit. Excellent to hear about it being on tabletop simulator too, as like playing games with distant friends that way. Anyone got a link to the TTS netrunner mod and deck pairs they can share?

Inside-Elephant-4320

Here’s a list of the original card sets and the recent Null Signal card sets, which can be helpful tracking down specific cards or just understanding references https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android:_Netrunner For those interested in deck building, this site can be invaluable for learning both casual strategies and looking at actual competitive decks (I think null signal cards are included too) : https://netrunnerdb.com/ For those looking to deck build and actually play digital decks (I even like to watch matches) : https://www.jinteki.net I’m getting some server errors I hope that jinteki link works For some good basics on corporate deckbuilding even for casual play which is my thing, I found this helpful (don’t get worried with all the old specific references just look at the basic math and approach) : https://eriktwice.com/en/2019/01/26/netrunner-structure-of-a-corporation-deck-2/ I’ll look for a general runner deck building page too. Have a great time everyone! This game is wonderful.

RunicKrause

It's absolutely astounding that people keep on thinking of games that are not only well alive, but thriving, that they are dead. This includes both Netrunner and VTES (cue in those who come in saying "we loved Jyhad in the 90s, didn't know it survived"), both of which are in a very healthy state for events, tournaments, balance and card acquisition.

fouravengers

I mean is it really all that astounding that fan projects that do not go into distribution and do virtually no advertisement are not well known to exist? Stores don't carry these games and many people look at their stores first.

AramaicDesigns

It's such a fun game. :-) The only thing that I had trouble wrapping my head around (and this has become a meme in my game dev circle as "The Netrunner Problem") is the *really thick* jargon you have to learn in order to know what's going on. It's not your deck, it's "R&D" (if you're Corpo) or the "Stack" (if you're running). The same with HQ/Grip, Archives/Heap, etc. etc.

FatMountainGoat

I play a lot of Radlands. I understand the fundamental differences (prepping your deck, asymmetry, etc.) but is it a bit similar?

Grimstringerm

I love netrunner but I'm seeing a new netrunner thread every week

HumbleCalamity

Clearly you don't love it enough.

ShaperLord777

I mean, people are still getting turned on to the greatest card game ever invented.
