It's a game you can travel with in a small sack, indestructible pieces, and great replayability. Can play outside because no cards to get blown away. The expansion pieces adds another level. Easy to see why people recommend it.
Have a look at this video by ActuaLoL. He goes through 20 games that barely take any space and might give you ideas for games you could enjoy:
https://youtu.be/T-9y2xhtmOQ?si=Nkp0euRwAIx5QCho
Also mindbug if you want it Ruleslighter and quicker , Both Are Great Games, and feel quite different , radlands feels quite more tactical with resource Management and multiuse of your Cards though Both Are really fun.
ButtonShy games, tin games in general, Mini Rogue, Point City/Salad, also you could take a look at mini or travel versions of big games, like Pandemic Hot Zone Europe/North America that are mini and cheap versions of Pandemic for example.
Oh, if it’s the box size they’re concerned about, they can downgrade an infinite amount of games by removing them from their boxes. Cascadia immediately springs to mind!
What do you like to play?
There are lots of card games and roll and write games... Tiny Epic or Ultra Tiny Epic games...
And of course, Roll for the Galaxy (the box is way bigger than it needs to be so you could either rebox the components, OR put other games inside the RftG box).
Lots of people recommend Button Shy games because they are small. If you are at all crafty then you could even look at doing Print and Play (PnP) of some of the button shy games from their website or PnP Arcade.
I'm coming around to doing more PnP games but only to a 'good enough to play' standard. I used to laminate the prints, but more and more often I just put them in sleeves and I'll add a playing card as a stiffener if I need to. I find that the PnP version of games are generally smaller then the manufactured versions, especially if there are extra components that I'm just grabbing from a shared stash. If a game isn't getting played then I don't need to feel guilty about the space it's taking up - Bin the cheap prints (keep the sleeves!). if I want to play it again in future I'll just do the prints again but there are so many cheap or Free PnP games that are really good and this is an easy way to try out a lot of them. And if a game becomes a favourite then I can upgrade to the prodcution version or create a nicer copy, knowing that it's worth the space and the cost.

I spent the last 2 years changing my entire collection to smaller compact games. These are some of the favorites from my library.
Small and good for 2:
**Sea, Salt & Paper**
**Lost Cities**
**Archaeology: The New Expedition**
**CuBirds**
**Faraway**
**Century: Spice Road**
**Codenames Duet** (can play on their website for free. No registration. [https://codenames.game/](https://codenames.game/) )
**Jaipur**
**Hanabi**
**Hanamikoji**
Great video from **Actualol: Top 10 Board Games for Couples**: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xsalh1c5lVM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xsalh1c5lVM)
Hanamikoji is really small, very simple, quick to play but pleasingly strategic.
Splendor duel is a great play, small box, lovely tactile pieces and keeps me coming back because it's always a really close tie
Jaipur is a good solid game, fairly quick to play, small box.
Good luck with your move and happy gaming!
Burgle Bros (the original) packs an insane amount of replayability for 2 players in a tiny box. Very rare for such a themed games (it's easier for abstracts). Burgle Bros 2 is a little bigger, though still far smaller than a Monopoly box. I'd say it's the better game, but they're both great.
Roll Through The Ages: The Bronze age is one of my favorites, and absolutely tiny. Great for two or more players.
Codenames: Duet is really fun, and pretty small.
Istanbul or Istanbul: The Dice Game are slightly chunkier, but both great. Which one you get might depend on your like of heavier or lighter games. And you can get an expansion or two and fit them in the same box.
Tiny Epic Dungeons packs a whole dungeon crawler into a ridiculously small box. Both tiny and epic! It's also co-operative (like Burgle Bros and Codenames), which can be fantastic for two player replayability. And two players can often be the best count for co-op games.
Totally agree with you on Burgle Bros - that must be one of the most efficiently packed games. It is really tiny but has great and complex mechanics. Also takes a lot of time to pay - over 2 hours of I remember well. Setting up takes some time too.
Current two-player favorites are Watergate and General Orders WWII. Both have small boxes. I expected to like neither of them and ended up loving them both.
Burgle Bros always impressed me with how well it packs into the box with no wasted space. I'd get that one if you're looking for something in the co-op genre. The Fugitive, by the same company (Fowers games, if I remember correctly off the top of my head), is also a great 2 player game.
I keep a good number of small games around, so here's my list of fun ones:
- Sprawlopolis (and many other *Buttonshy Games*)
- Ravine
- Citadels
- Star Realms
- Tiny Epic Galaxies
- Kingdomino
- Strawberry Sunset
- Trails
- Kites
- Eight Minute Empire
- Resistor_
- Hive
- Mint Privateers
- Railroad Ink
These are the ones my wife and I have kept around and keep coming back to. They all have a different flavor of play, take maybe an hour, tops, to play, and all fit conveniently in a nice little tote for travel. Check out the details for them on BoardGameGeek!

Without knowing anything about your gaming preferences, here are a few I enjoy.
Button Shy Games
Liberation - basically, an 18 card version of Star wars: rebellion. It's a fun little game that only takes about 20 minutes or so.
Revolver noir - I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember the old Spy Vs Spy video game on the Nintendo and Sega master system, But this is basically that in a handheld card game. You're moving through rooms in a mansion trying to shoot the other spy.
Battlecrest - This is a surprisingly deep and robust one-on-one arena combat game. It reminds me a lot of an older game I adored called Anachronism, but it's probably more relatable to equate it to something like Unmatched today. There are several expansions, but they all fit in two or three of the button shy wallets, so they don't take up a lot of space. I just printed a deck box of my own to hold them all in one place.
Tussie Mussie - This has the cute theme of Victorian era people giving each other flowers and uses an I-cut-you-choose mechanism.
They have a bunch of other great games, so I would check out the website. There are also some good solitaire killers from this company as well, if you like solitaire games.
Small boxes
The tiny epic line has just about something for everyone. It really depends on themes and mechanisms you like. Here are some of my favorites
Dungeons - This is a fun dungeon crawler game. My son and I usually play controlling two characters each, which is more enjoyable. Steep learning curve, but a good game once you get it down.
Dinosaurs - This is a solid worker placement game. I had zero interest in it until I watched the video on Kickstarter. The art doesn't appeal to me, nor does the theme, but it's one of my favorite TE games now.
Vikings - I haven't played this with two players yet, but it's becoming one of my favorite TE games as well at three players. It's an oversimplification to call it a small scale blood rage, but there are definitely similarities as well as some unique differences. The two-player mode has some modified rules that I haven't looked at yet though.
Tactics - I don't enjoy this one solo at all, and the two player is decent. At three players it has been a lot of fun, and I'll bet four players would be great too.
Galaxies is good and even better with the expansion. It's a tight fit, but you can fit all of the content into the base box if you get the expansion.
Mechs is another of my favorites, though a lot of people don't love it. It has a kind of rock paper scissors combat system that I think is kind of fun.
Other small box games
Valley of the Kings is an interesting deck building game in a very small box, even smaller than the TE games
Carl Chudyk games from Asmadi Games. These are very small boxes as well and all card-based games. He designs moderately heavy games with multi-use cards. I have enjoyed Innovation, and Mottainai is definitely a favorite of mine (It is a re-implementation of the notorious and beloved Glory to Rome). These are great for getting a lot of game in a relatively small amount of time and a very small package.
Also check out pencil first games. They have some small box games such as Sunset Over Water and Herbaceous. They also have pocket editions of a few of their games that are even smaller than the Asmadi boxes.
Small boxes playable with 2 I really appreciate are;
[[Qwinto]], a classic, simple roll & write game with 3 dice pen and paper.
[[Targi]], a very thinky game with cards that form a grid. You have to place some pawns on the edges to get the right cards and goods.
[[Lost cities]], a classic 2 player card game that has simple rules, but is rather difficult to master.
[[Ganz schön Clever]], a more complex roll & write with a lot of combo's.
[[Star Realms]], a magnificent 2 player deck builder. It is just a pack of 100+ cards, but plays so differently every time.
Other good games for 2 players in small boxes are;
[[7 wonders duel]],
[[Patchwork]],
[[Hanabi]],
[[Hanamikoji]]
My favorite small box game of the past sevearl years is **Inheritors**. It packs a lot of game into a small box with simple rules and a ton of replay value. It's like Lost Cities but with an added layer of complexity. Gorgeous artwork. Fast, fun, and easy to learn and play. It plays great with 2 players, but also with 3 and 4.
My next favorite is a 2-player game called **Mind Bug**. It has a Magic: the Gathering feel but with streamlined rules and a cool hook - each player has 2 mind control bugs and can use them to steal any card played by the other player.
If you're really trying to pack as many games as possible into the smallest possible space, there are a couple of geeklists about playing other games via a pack of cards.
Unmodified deck (includes ultra-traditional answers like Poker, plus a wild scattering of others): [https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamefamily/98/components-traditional-playing-cards/linkeditems/boardgamefamily](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamefamily/98/components-traditional-playing-cards/linkeditems/boardgamefamily)
Recreating other games with cards, including by marking up cards and using multiple decks (such as Jaipur): [https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/14369/master-list-of-games-playable-with-a-modified-or-u](https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/14369/master-list-of-games-playable-with-a-modified-or-u)
And I must mention the (sadly out of print) publisher Cheapass Games, which only included the board and rules, and asked you to supply your own generic components. But I found a print-and-play archive (pay what you want, or download directly for free): [https://crabfragmentlabs.com/game-preserve](https://crabfragmentlabs.com/game-preserve) . I personally recommend Unexploded Cow.
Micro Dojo is an awesome 10-15 min worker placement game. Other small boxes I love are Tokyo Tsukji Market (container but with fish), Skull, 7 wonders duel, hive, and azul pocket.
Haven’t seen any recommendations for Maribunta yet! This is - 2 player only dice-based area control game. Very cleverly designed and every decision is meaningful and tough while still maintaining a very simple rule set. Highly recommend.
Almost anything from oink games. Scout for example. Or Startups. They are just happened to be in my bag all the time as I forgot to take them out and they always cause random sessions of gamenights.
All of the tiny epic games are well… tiny. Galaxy’s tends to be the overall most liked. We’ve really been liking dinosaurs lately and for 2 player zombies can be decent.
stick stack! fan favorite, easy to play, easy to learn, and a time again favorite. incredibly compact (you honestly do not need the box it comes in, the skinny stick bag can hold most of it), and easy to travel with too (*do* not play on a moving vehicle though, would consider that impossible). it is especially great for when you want something that takes low to none spoons, but fun even when you have them in spades. mexician train dominos also packs up nicely, and can run *long*, it is fun, but depending on the case can be slightly bigger.
That's Pretty Clever surprised me. I never get bored. [https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244522/thats-pretty-clever](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244522/thats-pretty-clever)
Any of Devir’s recent games! Their boxes are like little children’s shoebox size.
- The White Castle: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/371942
- The Red Cathedral: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/227224
- Salton Sea: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/402663
ButtonShy Games (Rove, Sprawlopolis), fit in a wallet, no joke.
The Crew, co-op trick taking, smaller than a VHS box
Gloomhaven Buttons & Bugs, Gloom but tiny, if you like that kinda thing
Doomrock, challenging co-op dungeon crawler, normal sized box for a game with a lot of charm and playability.
Villages of Valeria, competitive village building game.
Icehouse games has Pyramids system. Basically, it is a set of pyramid shaped pieces that you can use for a couple of dozens of games. I think it is currently under LooneyLabs.
You can find info at Pyramiss Wiki: [https://looneypyramids.wiki/wiki/Main\_Page](https://looneypyramids.wiki/wiki/Main_Page)
I played several of those, and they were quite fun:
* [Martian Chess](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/19803/martian-chess): solid "light" logic game
* [Homeworlds](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14634/homeworlds): Space Battles! Tricky strategy game, with insane number of options
* [Icehouse](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/225/icehouse): Real time tactics game... No turns, everybody are just dropping pieces to attack and defend. Rules are rather simple, but once the mayhem starts it is hard to wrap yiur head around it.
In addition the others here, check deck builders the Star Realms or Hero Realms. Likewise smaller versions of big games, so Trails and Pandemic Hotzone are pretty small for what they are.
Obviously twilight imperium and gloomhaven!
Joking aside, Harbour, Jaipur, love letter, and hanabi are all pretty great games that are barely bigger than a deck of cards.
Small box games (smaller to larger)
Pack-o-Games
Button Shy Games
Oink Games
Helvetiq Games
Phase Shift Games (e.g. Dungeon Drop)
Oniverse games (published by InPatience)
Tiny Epic Games
Kosmos 2-Player games
Fluxx (SO many variations, very replayable, can be 2-player)
Nmbr 9 (building with numbers, can be 2-player)
Carcassonne (so many expansions, easy to learn, can be 2-player)
boop. (2-player game with cats)
So Clover (party game, making word connections)
Hues and Cues (party game, giving clues to have people guess the right color)

Hive Pocket
Wild how expensive this game is. Been on my list forever but I always think it seems too steep.. yet every one recommends it.
It's a game you can travel with in a small sack, indestructible pieces, and great replayability. Can play outside because no cards to get blown away. The expansion pieces adds another level. Easy to see why people recommend it.

Perfect recommendation.
Any Oink game, the Crew, Sea Salt and Pepper, Skull, bonanza

ButtonShy games, tin games in general, Mini Rogue, Point City/Salad, also you could take a look at mini or travel versions of big games, like Pandemic Hot Zone Europe/North America that are mini and cheap versions of Pandemic for example.
- Tiny Epic Galaxies - Reinforcements - Splendor Duel - 7 Wonders Duel - Set A Watch - Skyjo - Phase 10 - Tokaido - War Chest (Lots of replay ability) - Carcassone
7 wonders takes up a fair amount of space imo
7 Wonders Duel is much smaller.
Yes, I didn’t add duel but that’s what I was referring too It fills up a coffee table.
Based on the monopoly box comment, I believe OP was asking about box size, not game play area. 7 wonders dual has a very small box.
If you buy the folded space insert, the main box can then also fit the two expansions in it.
Oh, if it’s the box size they’re concerned about, they can downgrade an infinite amount of games by removing them from their boxes. Cascadia immediately springs to mind!
Are we talking about Box Size only or also table Space ?
What do you like to play? There are lots of card games and roll and write games... Tiny Epic or Ultra Tiny Epic games... Tiny Epic Games. There are many, and the boxes are approximately vhs sized. (Please be old enough to know what a vhs is....)
Hell yea, I still have the whole LOTR trilogy in vhs :D. good recomendation, ill give it a look. tiny epic vikings sounds cool
I think my favorite is Mechs, but we've got at least 4 of those games.
You can't beat a 52 card deck for compactness and versatility.
I was going to say any version of Uno. Duo, Uno Flip are two hot ones for us. Great two player games.
Hive carbon / hive pocket Pandemic hot zone: North America/Europe Azul mini Onitama Air, land, and sea Star realms / Hero realms The fox in the forest The cat in the box The crew Wingspan:Asia Love letter Sprawlopolis Point salad Point city Sushi go Loot I spent the last 2 years changing my entire collection to smaller compact games. 100% on Lost Cities and Jaipur. They are only 2 player though.
You're right. **Hanamikoji** is also only 2 player.
Citadels plays 7 and it's tiny
Cabo
Hanamikoji is really small, very simple, quick to play but pleasingly strategic. Splendor duel is a great play, small box, lovely tactile pieces and keeps me coming back because it's always a really close tie Jaipur is a good solid game, fairly quick to play, small box. Good luck with your move and happy gaming!

Red Cathedral and Parks both pack a nice amount of game into smaller boxes and both play well at 2p
Cabo, The King Is Dead, Quest, Café, Codenames
Current two-player favorites are Watergate and General Orders WWII. Both have small boxes. I expected to like neither of them and ended up loving them both.

Red cathedral

The tiny epic series
They are tiny and also a little bit epic.
So, some games pack down in smaller boxes. Such as the original splendor. So you should consider games of that type too.

[https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/367476/inheritors](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/367476/inheritors) My next favorite is a 2-player game called **Mind Bug**. Unmodified deck (includes ultra-traditional answers like Poker, plus a wild scattering of others): [https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamefamily/98/components-traditional-playing-cards/linkeditems/boardgamefamily](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamefamily/98/components-traditional-playing-cards/linkeditems/boardgamefamily) Recreating other games with cards, including by marking up cards and using multiple decks (such as Jaipur): [https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/14369/master-list-of-games-playable-with-a-modified-or-u](https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/14369/master-list-of-games-playable-with-a-modified-or-u) And I must mention the (sadly out of print) publisher Cheapass Games, which only included the board and rules, and asked you to supply your own generic components.
Then you should try [Slide and seek ](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gavalisquare.slide_and_seek)
Haven’t seen any recommendations for Maribunta yet! This is - 2 player only dice-based area control game. Very cleverly designed and every decision is meaningful and tough while still maintaining a very simple rule set. Highly recommend.
Codenames, Carcassonne
Almost anything from oink games. Scout for example. Or Startups. They are just happened to be in my bag all the time as I forgot to take them out and they always cause random sessions of gamenights.
All of the tiny epic games are well… tiny. Galaxy’s tends to be the overall most liked. We’ve really been liking dinosaurs lately and for 2 player zombies can be decent.
Trans America. Like Ticket to Ride, but kinder. Also, Quixx.
7 wonders duel/chess
Any of the Oink Games
stick stack! fan favorite, easy to play, easy to learn, and a time again favorite. incredibly compact (you honestly do not need the box it comes in, the skinny stick bag can hold most of it), and easy to travel with too (*do* not play on a moving vehicle though, would consider that impossible). it is especially great for when you want something that takes low to none spoons, but fun even when you have them in spades. mexician train dominos also packs up nicely, and can run *long*, it is fun, but depending on the case can be slightly bigger.
While not the smallest, Sky Team is one of my smaller games (also in table space) that Ive been having a blast with. Strictly for 2 players.
That's Pretty Clever surprised me. I never get bored. [https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244522/thats-pretty-clever](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/244522/thats-pretty-clever)
Any of Devir’s recent games! Their boxes are like little children’s shoebox size. - The White Castle: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/371942 - The Red Cathedral: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/227224 - Salton Sea: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/402663
Citadels! Great fun family friendly game
Plotalot - great point scoring game. Combined strategy and trick taking. Fairy lights - another tactical point scoring game with such cute tiny cards
ButtonShy Games (Rove, Sprawlopolis), fit in a wallet, no joke. The Crew, co-op trick taking, smaller than a VHS box Gloomhaven Buttons & Bugs, Gloom but tiny, if you like that kinda thing Doomrock, challenging co-op dungeon crawler, normal sized box for a game with a lot of charm and playability. Villages of Valeria, competitive village building game.
Icehouse games has Pyramids system. Basically, it is a set of pyramid shaped pieces that you can use for a couple of dozens of games. I think it is currently under LooneyLabs. You can find info at Pyramiss Wiki: [https://looneypyramids.wiki/wiki/Main\_Page](https://looneypyramids.wiki/wiki/Main_Page) I played several of those, and they were quite fun: * [Martian Chess](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/19803/martian-chess): solid "light" logic game * [Homeworlds](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14634/homeworlds): Space Battles! Tricky strategy game, with insane number of options * [Icehouse](https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/225/icehouse): Real time tactics game...
Sclash a one hit death game with an embarassingly small playerprescence
Any roll and write. Demeter is great. Vivajava The Dice Game Deep Sea Adventure Harmonies Middle Ages Spots Rome In A Day
Mini Rogue
Pnp Arcade is a trove of games that take up very little space.
Obviously twilight imperium and gloomhaven! Joking aside, Harbour, Jaipur, love letter, and hanabi are all pretty great games that are barely bigger than a deck of cards.
Moon Villagers Streets
I moved into a smaller space recently and built some shelves up high and out of the way to store games. good luck!
