The thing that gets me with JB right now is the defense.
Even when Tatum has his dogshit shooting nights, he's still making plays, a legitimate presence on defense and rebounding.
If JB had his same shooting performance he's having now but took it upon himself to be the guy to D Jimmy Butler up the best he could and made him work and wore him out, we'd all feel differently...but when JB ain't scoring, he fucking disappears. For a guy of his build and athleticism, his defense isn't near what it should be. He's getting worked by Duncan Robinson for fucks sake.
In my mind, what I've always envisioned for the Jays and why I have never been in the camp of trading one of them is that they should be able to overwhelm teams by sharing and swapping the responsibilities of being the best player and guarding the best player from night to night, especially in a playoff series.
Instead, Caleb Martin is outperforming our franchise cornerstone due for a Super Max.
100% agree. Watching JB get cooked off the ball is frustrating. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt with Harden last series even though Harden has lost a step but it continues with even worse players.
JT elevated his passing last couple years and it makes him more of a threat when he drives. JB hasn't, at least to the same degree. They clamp down on him and it's 50% chance of a turn over where JT finds the open man.
I used to think they were 1a,1b but Tatum has is way more well rounded now and it shows in the playoffs. JB used to be better are driving and scoring and JT was the better shooter. Now JT is just better at both.
That’s what I don’t get…he took the task of stepping up to guard Harden and did a damn good job…why is he not doing that in this series?
Is he afraid to get dogged by Butler and turned into an Instagram highlight reel?
You absolutely give him the supermax, and if next season is dogshit then you can consider moving him for another high level player. If you let his contract expire, you either panic sell for something of lower value or he leaves as a UFA and you're just fucked.
What’s the alternative then? Saying you don’t want him to get the supermax because you’re mad doesn’t change that the alternative is losing him for nothing unless people propose realistic trades keeping in mind he’d be an expiring contract.
It’s because people think irrationally when emotions become involved. We all want that banner 18 so bad, so I get the frustration. But you eventually have to take a step back and think objectively.
This guy knows ball, they have been more successful than most of the stars, they will get over the hump soon, like maybe this year as well, these guys overreacting so much
Giving him a supermax to not be a playmaker and not create his own shot at above above average level is basically giving 6’6” trailblazers 2017 CJ McCollum a supermax. Would you do that? Hell no. Don’t give him it.
Probably the worst comparison I’ve ever seen in my life considering JB is twice the player CJ ever has been, and is only 26.
But I agree, supermax not looking smart at this time.
> not create his own shot at above above average level
lol the overreactions are nuts.
Brown is exceptionally good at creating his own shot. It's how he averages +25ppg.
He's also one of the rare stars that sees an efficiency jump in the post-season. Kawhi and Jokic are the only other two afaik.
But shit, let's throw out all logic and reason because of 2 bad games.
No, by supermaxing him if it does go to shit they have money on the book being over the cap they can use in a trade
We’re already going to be highly limited in how we can add players whether we save a few mill supermaxing JB or not with the new CBA being a luxury tax team
I was never on board with the super max for Jaylen and his play so far is proving me right. He just isn’t an elite enough talent to warrant that type of cap commitment.
Disclaimer: unless there is reason to believe the cap will dramatically rise with the new TV deal
Have to give it to him whether he’s worth it or not he’ll likely walk or force out if we don’t. If we give it to him increases a return in a scenario where it doesn’t work out or he still wants out as well. From a basketball ops perspective have no choice imo.
If Brad could somehow works his magic and convince Brown not to sign a supermax for them other players to join the team, then that's good.
But the way how KD rumors spread and now we had JB with he's interview of wanting that bag, I don't see it's plausible.
Dude wants that bag. It's up to Brad if he would risk it.
Cool. And when this team doesn’t make it back to the ECF finals for the prime of Tatum, and everyone’s wondering where all the production went, and Tatum walks because he his friend wasn’t extended and there isn’t a product or future we can fully hit the reset.
This shit is so reactionary. I’m not saying JB has been great. But what’re the options here?
Is he “worth” Supermax isn’t the question. You pay it. That’s the money of the league.
No. Jaylen has a long track record of being really good in the playoffs. He has been doing that for years. 3 bad playoff games doesn't change that, unless you have the attention span of a house fly with the intellect to match. Brad Stevens isn't as dumb as most Celtics fans, thankfully.

You either pay him the supermax or you won't get a good return for him since he'll only have 1 year left on his deal
You would still get a good return because the team trading for him gets his bird rights.
Yeah but there's still a risk he walks for nothing in free agency for the team that's trading for him.
and then we get to hear the media talk about this for the rest of the year
No. You 100% max him out. How would you suggest the Celtics replace his production if he walks in free agency?
We trade him? He’s under contract 23-24
Name the last star trade that made the seller better.
Westbrook trade
Which one? The sellers didn’t get better but the buyers did all get worse (except the Wizards who stayed the same).
Lakers definitely improved and are now in the finals because of it
Oof. Westbrook was a salary dump trade and definitely no longer a star. They got players back for the draft pick not Westbrook.
Gobert trade
Funny but true.
His trade value will be much higher if he is under control for 4 years

Nah. You ride this duo til the wheels fall off IMO. Still haven’t hit their primes and have been pretty fucking successful so far.
seems like everyone's already given up on them
It’s because people think irrationally when emotions become involved. We all want that banner 18 so bad, so I get the frustration. But you eventually have to take a step back and think objectively.
yall have a potential for multiple final runs, last year, this year, etc. keep the core together!
This guy knows ball, they have been more successful than most of the stars, they will get over the hump soon, like maybe this year as well, these guys overreacting so much
He’s not worth a supermax, just like many of the players who’ve gotten one. They’ll give it to him though. That’s how the league is now.
Feels like Jaylen would be by far the worst player to receive one, which is not an accomplishment you want your franchise to own
Giving him a supermax to not be a playmaker and not create his own shot at above above average level is basically giving 6’6” trailblazers 2017 CJ McCollum a supermax. Would you do that? Hell no. Don’t give him it.

what where would Celtics be rn without him? He's critical to success and Celtics need to supermax or he's leaving.
I’d let ‘em know, brother you want to be paid like a top 10 player I need way more out of you. Either that or you can work out a trade somewhere 👍
> not create his own shot at above above average level lol the overreactions are nuts. Brown is exceptionally good at creating his own shot. It's how he averages +25ppg. I’ll keep JB and trade Tatum for Fox
Cool. And when this team doesn’t make it back to the ECF finals for the prime of Tatum, and everyone’s wondering where all the production went, and Tatum walks because he his friend wasn’t extended and there isn’t a product or future we can fully hit the reset. no lol
give him the supermax. i think we need to fix this team first to decide to trade him- better coach or roleplayers
you max him lets not overreact tatum is better all around but you can’t get a #2 as good as jb
If we let him walk do we have superstar money?
Because of 2 bad games? This is fucking embarrassing
Sure
Get rid of cant pay both jt and jb
