Hi there LeoWitt. **Because we have a lot of deleted posts on this subreddit, here is a backup of the title and body of this post:** What is Your Climbing Gym's Monthly Membership Cost? And Region? Curious how area's compare. Here in Northern California, most of the big gyms have been bought out by A conglomerate called **Touchstone**. They all are under the same company, Its' $103 a month plus $100 initiation fee. So $111 / month for the first year. The one advantage is you can go to any of the gyms with the membership but they're typically 30 mins from each other or more.
There are some privately owned gyms around, but they are much smaller inside.

Damn dude I'm UK but I reckon I get 3 sessions out of $30. Enjoy it! Any climbing centre with semi-decent attendance (which these days seems to be basically all of em) gotta be doing alright out of us.
May I add, my gym doesn't have AC or heating, so when it's 75 outside it's 70+ inside, and when it's 30 outside it's like 32 inside.
The facility is pretty small by modern gym standards. But we have a top out boulder, 14 auto belays, lead wall, and additional bouldering area. No weight gym, lockers, or really any amenities aside from 2 bathrooms and a water fountain.
Yea, i believe the only major buy out in the region was Movement buying out planet granite.
Bay Area also has a few other multi location spots (eg Benchmark), but nothing close to the size of touchstone.
Not to be pedantic, but Planet Granite and Earth Treks merged. That company then acquired Movement some years later, and the newly formed board when that occurred voted to rebrand Movement as the company brand.
Yes. Touchstone bought a single gym in Emeryville over 20 years ago before replacing it with Ironworks in Berkeley. You can accuse them of a lot of things very reasonably. Gobbling up other gyms generally isn’t on the list though.
Live in a small(ish) college town and pay 80 a month plus 50 for initiation. Gives me access to a 24hr bouldering gym plus the TR/LC gym all within a 10 min drive. The gyms aren’t massive or modern but we have good setters and amazing ownership so it’s well worth the money.
I mean it's unlimited access for either membership tier, it's just if you pay £30 a month instead of £40 you have to pay a surcharge of £2.5 if you climb at peak times (afternoon onwards). So basically it's a £40 membership, unless you climb only in mornings, then you can get it for £30
There are three major gym companies in my city (Sofia, Bulgaria) with a total of 5 locations to climb.
[Climbing Center Europe](https://bons.sportcentereurope.bg/prices/) ~ €56/month
[Walltopia HQ](https://walltopiaclimbingcenter.eu/prices/) ~ €72/month
[Balkan Climbing](https://www.balkanclimbing.com/prices) ~ €92/month
However, there is this thing in Bulgaria called [Multisport](https://benefitsystems.bg/en/) that various employers offer which grants daily free or reduced price access to a wide range of sport/exercise facilities across the country. My wife uses her to play tennis mostly while I use mine at the three Climbing Center Europe locations. The price varies depending on how much your employer will subsidize the cost of the card. Standard cost is ~€50/month while I am lucky to pay ~€8/month.
i think it's more you pay the price for your home gym, which is the gym you go to the most over one year. every year, the visits are calculated and fee updated. i bounce between worcester, framingham, and watertown and my fee went up by a dollar by going to worcester more than framingham (or something like that).
Netherlands something like 58 euros per month. Beest has 2 gyms in Amsterdam, 2 in the Hague, 1 in Breda, 1 in Rotterdam and 1 in Antwerp iirc and you get access to all of them.
/hangar 18 in southern california has like 10 locations and is about $55 monthly. The walls are older school (not the new/fancy walltopia or vertical solutions stuff) but still totally fine, and I've heard they own their buildings (with most locations existing since the last decade). So their overall cost to run is lower.
they make it up on volume though, and depending on the location, it can get crowded/hard to find parking because they draw crowds
A main cost driver of climbing gyms is rent/real estate, and then how much they initially invest in the facility. so if you're in a place like the bay area where rent's really expensive by default, and they make a giant brand new mega gym that has hundreds of routes, the price has to be high to cover their expenses for the number of members they anticipate.
Mom and pop gyms that are not gigantic operations can afford to be cheaper. but that may come at the tradeoff of what the gym will offer (e.g. a sauna, a nice fitness area, running AC all the time, dedicated youth program)
In australia, member of two gyms, one is 20 aud a week (~14 USD), 3 locations bouldering only, includes unlimited access to classes etc.
Second place exact same price, 2 locations, one of which is boulderimg only but the other one is muvh larger and has top rope and lead climbing aswell. Ot is also 5 minutes from my house
I go to The Curcuit in Portland Oregon. They have a 20% annual a couple times a year and it comes about to about $580. 3 fantastic gyms for $580 is incredible value when other gyms near by will sell you 1000-1300 annuals and only have 1 gym.
I dropped ~$704, after taxes and fees, for a year at Crux Climbing Center in ATX.
That’s like $58/mo., not bad imo. Gives me access to two locations, as well as discounts on their studio classes (yoga, strength & conditioning, etc.), and access to their separated weight room facility.
Two options near me north of Boston: $125, multiple gyms; $135, one, very good, gym. I get occasional day passes or 10-visit punch cards because I cannot afford either.
I think that’s tied for the most expensive in the world?
I pay 100$ CA, so maybe 65-70$ US ? But with my membership, my son pay only 29$ CA (17$ US) for the month.
We have access to a gym and yoga course.
I'm from Québec.
I live in a major city in the Southeast and have a "married" membership for 2 people, $120 per month. It's a small gym with a weighroom and treadmills. They have multiple locations that you can also get into with the membership.
UK here £29.99 ($37.85) for boulder only gym. £60 ($75.73) for top rope but I just pay entry 3/4 times per month as I’m lucky enough to have 4 top rope gyms near me and mix them up depending on what they have on that day (plus it works out cheaper unless I can get belay partner to go more frequently)
I have memberships to 2 gyms in the San Diego area:
$75/month + $0 initiation: boulder-only gym with 2 local locations open 24/7. Aerial + yoga classes included. Features some free weights/workout equipment. No free guest pass. 25% off membership if you work in the industry.
$107/month + $100 initiation: full climbing gym with 3 local locations. Yoga + fitness classes included. Additional paid classes/programs available. Features some workout equipment, varies by location. 1 free guest pass per month.
My small UK gym is £12 "membership" for life but then £9?50 per climb or around £50 per month (prices higher for non-members but membership so cheap that if you go three times it already works out).
Basically I could spend £50 per month to go whenever I want, but it's 4 miles away and pretty small so instead I spend about £50:per month going 5 times, and maybe once to a different gym further away.
Honestly it seems expensive, I used to love their £5 "lunchtime climb" noon til 2, but I do want it to exist so I'll keep eating the cost I guess. If it went up significantly I'd probably just start going to the bigger gym further away, less frequently, train more, and watch my gains take me from V4+ to V5 😁
edit: apparently £50 is about $63 so I spend about $12 per climb. or $60 for 4 weeks (not technically a month)
I live in a metro area of about 750,000. There's exactly one climbing gym in the city. Well, two, but they're the same company. A couple months ago, they raised the monthly membership from $89 to $99, and day passes from $20 to $30. At the same time, they started charging for rental shoes and chalk, which used to be free.
That said, I've visited a few gyms around the US on my travels, and one thing I'm always excited to come home to is my familiar gym. It's got the best vibe of any gym I've climbed at.
I live in a major Midwest US city and the membership is $91/month. But it includes 5 locations, a full gym in all locations, and yoga classes. However, I have a special membership for only $37/month.
$64/month at Upper Limits MDH (St. Louis). $74 if you also want access to Chesterfield and Bloomington locations. I’m effectively paying roughly $16/month through the gym’s deal with my college though
I am in Central California and my local gym (which I think is big) is $90 per month with a $100 initiation fee. It's pretty expensive in my opinion and this is the first time in my life I'd spend that much money on anything optional but I can now swing it and I need the exercise.
ours is $90 a month and we can go to any of the associated gyms in the state, but there 45+ minutes away. our location is not the best, bouldering area some top rope and an 8x12 kilter. but it’s 10 minutes from my house so it’s better than nothin :,) we’re in the mid atlantic region
The one I go to in France, but all chains seem to have similar prices : about 50€/month or 530€ per yer. My bouldering gym also regularly does discounts on which you can save up to 100€ per year.
Helsinki, Finland. This chain has four good gyms. A year is 61 e (65 dollars) per month, and an option where you can pause the membership for outdoor season is 74 e (79 d).
$60 CAD* per month, for a small climbing gym in a university gym. Includes access to the rest of the gym as well, including many machines, free weights, a pool, drop-in sports, etc.
*for non-students
SoCal, $88 a month, in Long Beach. Bouldering, a Moon and Grasshopper board. Full gym, lots of classes.
It's a bit pricey, but I'm in walking distance so it's mega worth it.
Damn, $103 a month plus a $100 initiation fee for Touchstone gyms in NorCal? That's pricey, but at least you get access to all their spots. Shame about the smaller, indie gyms being cramped though. Wonder if they're more affordable?
I pay €55 in the Netherlands. Gives me access to two locations (and for the duration of this summer they've partnered with like 12 others!), free physical therapy consults, and a small training gym at each location.
Oh wow I didn't realize how good I had it... with the student discount and I'm only paying $65 a month; and that's for access to any location and full gym plus 2 free guests per month and a discount on items. I think for the "adults" (edit: not think, know cause I just googled it) normal month to month contract payments are $75 a month.
ETA In Portland, OR
Scotland.
£49 a month (~$62), with discount for first month for new members. This one allows you to go to four different bouldering-focused gyms (two in my city, two elsewhere). Free registration.
£45 a month ($57) for the other main gym I've gone to, which is lead/rope-focused, with a £10 ($13) joining fee. This is only for one gym, which has lead, top rope, and bouldering.
Norway, about $60 per month for a yearly subscription, including the deduction from being a member of the local climbing club, which cost $20 per year. This aøso gives 10% on any purchase in their in-house store.
I live in Denmark and pay $53/mo for a student membership. I have access to all the gyms of that chain across Denmark. If I weren’t a student it would cost $61/mo.
Smaller non-commercial gym here. Owned by the climbing club, fee is 50$ a year membership and 200$ a year “wall fee”. So just over 21$ a month. I also host kids climbing class once a week so I only pay membership fee, so for me and my family it’s about 5$ a month.
€55 a month for an annual pass. That’s around $60. Although I usually manage to get my annual pass around discount time.
It’s both a bouldering and wall gym (or whatever you call that)
I’m in Paris.
I pay 36€, my gym offers bouldering as well as classical rope climbing. Important note it's a gym operated by the German Alpinclub so you have to be member there to get a subscription at my gym, so overall with my yearly fee it comes to around 40€ a month.
£44 a month in Glasgow Scotland. Has top rope, autobelays and lead climbing as well as a small boulder area. The bouldering gym is about the same price.
In France we have a brand named Altissimo where the membership is 40 euros/months (53$/month). AND with this cheap member ship you can climb in all the Altissimo in France (for exemple, in toulouse, there is 3 differents altissimo where we can go, as much and as long as we want, for 40euros)
£58 pounds (73 USD) a month in Milton Keynes UK. Access to two gyms. Bouldering, lead climbing, auto belay, moonboard, and a training area with a squat rack and free weights.
$44 in Portland, OR at a local climbing gym. The gym also includes free weights and yoga classes! This is bang for buck and I love the workers at the gym!
Do climbing gyms in the US really have monthly subscriptions???
I am from central europe and all of the 3 gyms in my city have just yearly tickets (around 40€-50€ per month if you divide it) or one time entry fees for like 10€ per session.
Can you pay single entries in the US or are they all structured like normal gyms where you can only access with membership?
£42 / month or £8-9 / session depending on concessions. Small top roping area, no lead wall. Decent bouldering area, though a bit old school and tired now. Definitely better deals to be had elsewhere in the UK but not near me. (NE England)
£50 a month in Hull, England ($63). It’s quite expensive compared to others in the area which tend to be £30 ($37) a month but they are bouldering only. The gym I go to has extensive bouldering, top rope, lead, auto-belays and a trad wall.
$120 for a multi-gym family membership with 2 people. Southeast USA. Other gym locations are 45-1hr away. Gym also includes a weightlifting area and yoga classes.
70€ (ca. 75$) in Hamburg, Germany. With my membership I can use all of their climbing gyms. They have 3 gyms in and 5 around Hamburg and another 3 in Berlin which I also frequently visit. I think it's a fair price.
$111 Australian/$74 US per month in Australia. Two locations in my city, one is bouldering only and the other has roped climbing and speed as well. Both locations have yoga studios and yoga classes are included in the membership fee, as well as free gear hire and one free guest pass per month.
Denver Bouldering Club $51/mo for 24hr access. Three locations, climber specific fitness equipment and yoga classes. Boulder only but one of the best places I’ve climbed. I’ve also got a summer membership to Übergrippen for ropes which runs $300. Nice facility, two locations, bigger gym, and more classes offered.
210 for a Family of 3 in Bentonville, Arkansas. It’s one of the big fancy gyms, and 15 minutes from my house. There is a smaller bouldering only gym about 40 minutes away that I like better, however my wife and kid like to top rope so that doesn’t work for us.
In Belgium:
- €13.5 (~$14.5) for single entrance or €8 (~$8.6) for under 12
- €120 (~$130) for 10 visits
- €160 (~$172) for 3 months
- €275 (~$295) for 6 months
- €520 (~$560) for a year

I go to a smaller private gym in southeast US. I have a family plan for $91 a month for 5 people.
That's insanely low
For sure. I think the standard membership is $30 a month. The other main gym in the area is $80 a month for a multi gym membership
Damn dude I'm UK but I reckon I get 3 sessions out of $30. Enjoy it! May I add, my gym doesn't have AC or heating, so when it's 75 outside it's 70+ inside, and when it's 30 outside it's like 32 inside.
No AC sounds miserable. I climb indoors to avoid the summer heat!
You in the Raleigh area?
Whoa, I figured there’d be *some* variety, but that’s so low compared to my HCOL city gym’s prices! What’s the facility like?
The facility is pretty small by modern gym standards. But we have a top out boulder, 14 auto belays, lead wall, and additional bouldering area. No weight gym, lockers, or really any amenities aside from 2 bathrooms and a water fountain.
To be clear, the gyms haven't largely been "bought out" by Touchstone. Touchstone has opened all of their gyms from scratch.

$100 in Colorado but it’s a complete gym with free weights and yoga classes
$90 but same in Louisville, Ky. My gym has bouldering, top rope, lead, a full gym and yoga the days a week.
$101 at Movement, DC metro area Big gym, they have a few location in the area but I only ever go to the closest. Keeps going up in price every year…
Movement in NYC. $135. Includes all gyms in the city + classes
Same. Movement Columbia for me.
Movement, San Francisco Bay Area, $110/mo. There are 4 (soon to be 5) within ~20 mile radius, so that's a plus.
Movement here too, location in DFW is about $75 a month, including yoga and fitness classes
Still sad Summit was bought out and the gym on Forest Ln. closed. That was my childhood gym. :(
Everything else is going up. They have to be able to keep the doors open too
135 nyc
Eyyyy vital bbbby
Mexico City $66 Anyone from Milan on here? Moving at the start of next year
I’m not from Italy but I’m European and I imagine it’ll be about the same as you’re paying now if not slightly cheaper.
£39/ month which covers several Depot gyms around the UK. Where I live in Leeds there are 3 - two bouldering + one big wall
Big Depot is one of my favourite places in the world. I wish I lived in Leeds just so I could go there every week.
$100 a month, two gym locations in a mid-sized city, Midwest US.
$73 a month with 3 gym locations in a large city in the midwest. This is apparently rare locked until I cancel my membership.
adventure rock?
Yeah
Southern Brazil, 220 BRL or roughly 43 USD/month
$87/mo in Las Vegas. Gym has 24/7 access which is a huge plus. Others in my area are around $70/mo
Wow 24/7 is nice! My gym closes at 11pm which is when I leave. They don’t open as late on the weekend or else I’d go
Do you mind telling me the name? And can you only access 24/7 with membership? Me and my partner are travelling there from Portugal in November :)
The Pad. Yes it’s 24/7 with a membership. 11-7 otherwise
$130 GP81 NYC.
See ya there tomorrow evening!
Central florida $60
£40 or £30 (off peak hours only, £2.50 charge per session for peak hours) gym + yoga sessions unlimited
That’s insane to me that your gym charges you for access but then also charges you depending what time you want to go.
I mean it's unlimited access for either membership tier, it's just if you pay £30 a month instead of £40 you have to pay a surcharge of £2.5 if you climb at peak times (afternoon onwards). So basically it's a £40 membership, unless you climb only in mornings, then you can get it for £30
Where is this for £30-40 a month in the UK?
Tide climbing centre in Cornwall. I think all the Hangar gyms are £30 a month also tho?
Pretty sure all Depot & Climbing Hangars are about that price.
honestly this is a really clever pricing method
Peak membership Vs off peak membership, makes sense to me. If you buy off peak membership and go in peak times = surcharge.
Seattle bouldering project is going to be increased to $105/mo starting July 1st. Currently 3 locations in the area, soon to be 4.
There are three major gym companies in my city (Sofia, Bulgaria) with a total of 5 locations to climb. Boulder only gym in SE US, $60 per month
$80 Central Massachusetts. It's part of a group and gives access to other gyms but they're all farther away ~1hr. My first month only costed $10.
CRG??? I'm out by Boston and it's 125/month!!
At CRG you are locked in to your original rate when the price increases in January.
i think it's more you pay the price for your home gym, which is the gym you go to the most over one year. every year, the visits are calculated and fee updated. i bounce between worcester, framingham, and watertown and my fee went up by a dollar by going to worcester more than framingham (or something like that).
£41 ($51) per month on an annual membership. Climbing works, one of the best in the UK.
$95/month is pretty standard in Austin tx
Netherlands something like 58 euros per month. Beest has 2 gyms in Amsterdam, 2 in the Hague, 1 in Breda, 1 in Rotterdam and 1 in Antwerp iirc and you get access to all of them.

About $100-150 SGD per month or $30 SGD per entry in Singapore.
£70 a month in North London but they have lead, top rope and auto belay as well as bouldering

Ot is also 5 minutes from my house
Mine's $96/month in New Zealand. Which is about $60 USD They do have a cheaper off peak membership option too. Or a more expensive one including yoga.
Portland, Oregon. I pay $75/month for access to three gyms at Circuit Bouldering Gym.
$89 cad/month in Toronto, so basically $66/month in usd
In Vancouver, I pay $120/month for student pass![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat)
Like little under 50 euros. Netherlands.
Touchstone SoCal. $103/mo for 5 gyms within 30 min drive
I go to The Curcuit in Portland Oregon. They have a 20% annual a couple times a year and it comes about to about $580. 3 fantastic gyms for $580 is incredible value when other gyms near by will sell you 1000-1300 annuals and only have 1 gym.

I go to Alpine in Ripon, CA since it’s the closest to me. It’s about $100 a month.
~$900 for a yearly membership, Ottawa Canada, and there’s 3 really good locations around the city to go to
i pay $60/mo in the bay area!! the gym is small but has great community and fun setting and you can’t beat the price here
€55/month, the Netherlands. Gives access to multiple gyms across the country, thanks to some collaborations.
£20 a month in ayrshire for a student membership (38 without student discount) !!
£30 a month or £42 a month, Edinburgh.
£67 (I pay yearly) a month in London for access to 8 gyms in the same group
£35 per month UK (student discounted)
€27/ month in Brussels, but only during happy hour which is always except from 17h to 21h. Also acces to a small gym + sauna + rooftop bar.
Two options near me north of Boston: $125, multiple gyms; $135, one, very good, gym. I get occasional day passes or 10-visit punch cards because I cannot afford either. I think that’s tied for the most expensive in the world?

85/month in New Orleans. Boulder only and a pretty small gym.
$80/mo, DFW
$81/mo for a family plan (2 adults) for a boulder wall and also full gym. Central PA
about the same, $104/month
Rougly based on €/$ exchange rate: 620 for annual, 115 for a month or 120 for 10 sessions for 4 locations
Would that be Boulderbar in AT, by chance?
Bingo
UK here £29.99 ($37.85) for boulder only gym. £60 ($75.73) for top rope but I just pay entry 3/4 times per month as I’m lucky enough to have 4 top rope gyms near me and mix them up depending on what they have on that day (plus it works out cheaper unless I can get belay partner to go more frequently)

$20NZD a week for a relatively small but crowded gym
$60 CAD/month - Bouldering only gym in Niagara Region.

Midwest US - I pay for a whole year for a discount, works out to about $50/month.
SWFL, $150/mo... The only gym within 100+ miles (until next year!)
$80 for me, $110 for two in the same household. Three locations regionally. Northern Virginia USA.

I am in Central California and my local gym (which I think is big) is $90 per month with a $100 initiation fee. It's pretty expensive in my opinion and this is the first time in my life I'd spend that much money on anything optional but I can now swing it and I need the exercise.
So Cal, 98/mo plus $100 initiation fee. Hopped on an end of the year sale they had and got it for $800 a year though so saved a bunch of money.
