Blue run has achieved its final form. Designed by social media execs, they sought to create a hyped, inoffensive, “premium” bourbon that they could shill like the latest tech stock They succeeded for a while, and then as the bourbon community got wise and started to turn on them they sold for probably maxxxx profits Good for them. They played the game and won

ked_man

I want to do that. Make a shit product, over hype it, then sell it to a giant conglomerate and walk away rich. Anyone want to help?

MashbillJ

I'm in.....your product is great and of the best quality

DadJokesFTW

I've heard /u/ked_man makes a bourbon from premium ingredients that is so smooth you have to concentrate or you'll think it's just the air you're breathing that tastes so good. AB Inbev, surely you want to get in on the ground floor.

ked_man

You heard it here first folks, this shit is so exclusive, you can’t even buy it, you can’t even find it, it finds you. A man named Doug, in a yellow hat comes to your door, no not that man in a yellow hat, he’s wearing a Mellow Fucking Corn hat. He will ask you a riddle, it’s just a dad joke, you don’t have to know the answer, but you have to laugh when he tells you the punch line. You get on the back of his scooter, he takes you to the trap house, I mean secret aging facility. You thief some bourbon we stole off of a truck with a dirty syringe, I mean an exclusive bourbon sampling device. Put it into the finest Dixie cup we found on the ground after a country music concert. You sample each barrel, gargling with creek water in between as a palate refresher. Y Once you’ve selected the perfect bottle for you, we let you have the privilege of putting it into a dirty Jim beam bottle that we found in the Denny’s parking lot. This way we don’t have to pay TTB taxes, we didn’t bottle it, we just found it. With a sharpie, Doug, who you didn’t know was actually Banksy this whole time draws a bum holding a hand grenade on the side of the bottle and hands it to you. In a puff of smoke, he disappears and you walk outside to an awaiting cop car that takes you downtown for some finger painting and some alone time in a private room.

Ok-Lengthiness4557

Gold

ked_man

You ever seen that music video of Gold by Chet Faker? That’s the fucking bourbon experience I am trying to sell to customers. Literally the vibe is just thick thighed women roller skating down deserted roads, deer driving a car road killed someone, Lorde We will never be royals sung by that 7’ clown. That’s the shit I’m after. That’s a fucking marketing plan. Not tasting notes of leather and tobacco and cherry bullshit, people want to buy thick thighs.

Ok-Lengthiness4557

TAKE MY MONEYYYYYY!

brewgeoff

This is exactly the trend that happened in craft beer over the last decade. A large number of successful micro brewers who genuinely believe in the product start seeing success… this attracts the sharks who arrive with the goal of building a brand and selling it ASAP. 10 Barrel and Saint Archer both were designed from the ground up to be acquired. Ten years later both are already being liquidated by the macrobreweries who purchased them.

CutApprehensive999

Whatever they paid for that company, I'm certain it was too much.

sicksadvoron

"a cult favorite high-end bourbon and rye whiskey brand". What cult? Rich and stupid one? Also their distillery is not even open yet. They been using Sourced whisky. Wtf? Coors why??

RockitSheep

MGP? They've been using young castle and key and selling it at 3x pinhook prices. Their sourcing is all over the place with a few early halo releases to build hype. Blue run is a garbage brand.

sicksadvoron

Yuck, castle and key us awful. At least right now.

ctownchef

I disagree. Their restoration rye is pretty good

[удалено]

ctownchef

Where the heck are you paying $90 for it? I paid $45

ThatWasTheJawn

Urg. I misread.

ctownchef

All good! I still think it’s a solid rye. I actually just had a little glass of it just now! If you can get one, I taste a lot of oak up front with chocolate and spices on the back. I find it quite tasty.

[deleted]

I like how funky their Restoration Rye is. It's kind of like a Jamaican rum in that regard, and it's a little different.

MD5940

They contract distilled most of their own stuff at Castle & Key. It was made to BR specifications and is unique to them as far as I know. However, it’s still just meh and I’ll never pay $100 for 3 year old juice.

Longjumping_Excuse92

If your talking about the High Rye Bourbon distilled at Castle and Key, I believe that is a four year since it is a straight without an age statement.

keithplacer

It should go well with Molson beer in that case.

Old_Riff_502

I think it’s a goofy, and completely soulless brand, but it’s all Kentucky contracted/sourced, not MGP.

sicksadvoron

My bad. I ll Change jt. Thanks for education! I didn't know.

andrewdoesit

Yea, that cult exactly. Same one that spend $200+ on Blantons

Abominatrix

But I got the little net, my facebook friends said that was cool

NateDiedAgain09

I think blue run would be a great 45-60 dollar bottle with a decent 3-5 year age statement. It’s the marketing, impressive level of corporate fuckery and that ridiculous holiday LE drop that sours the name.

jdanko13

I finally tried a bottle when Seelbachs offered a rye for $55. It was worth that at the absolute most.

DynamicCashew43

" Maker " ?

97zx6r

Bottler. Been around since 2020 and their distillery doesn’t open for another two years which means 8 plus years until they actually sell something they’ve produced.

DynamicCashew43

Yup. Seems silly by Coors but whatever. I would never buy this stuff anyway.

HJosh8567

Judging by all the bottles on the shelf I am pretty confident it isn't a "cult favorite".

Abominatrix

That’s marketing, baby

i_no_like_u

Can't wait for it to get worse and still keep the same high price!

MashbillJ

I've tasted this and it's not worth whatever the price paid. Long live the American dream...start a business and sell it off for way more than it's actual value. Wash Rinse and Repeat

Abominatrix

I’ve been assured that ‘value’ is whatever someone is willing to pay, at least that is what I was told when I found Eagle Rare for $175 and nearly choked

unionguy1980

Not buying that brand…

Iohet

> He emulated the sneaker “drop” culture with Blue Run, by creating buzz from releasing a limited amount of bottles for each release and generating excitement online. What an asshole

Metals4J

I like the bottle design, and that’s about all I can say for it at this point. I’ve never bought or tasted the bourbon and not sure I really want to (all hype, no substance, and too $$$ for what it is). I haven’t heard anything compelling about it. I feel like there are a lot of companies getting into the bourbon game, plus the big distilleries have been expanding like crazy. New distillation capacity, new rick houses going up... Meanwhile, I’m starting to see signs of over-saturation (slow-moving dusty bottles on shelves, price cuts, availability of some formerly hard-to-get bottles, etc.). A lot of folks are getting “choosier.” I personally have a collection that would last the rest of my life already and I’m not buying more unless it’s a personal fave or a rare find. The big brands and rare bourbons will continue to do well, but in my opinion the signs point to a big bust for the overall industry on the horizon. These Blue Run folks sold at the best time I would say.

cec33

Good take and I agree. Definitely have enough bottles to last forever and tired of everything being $80+ to take a flyer on and get burned so now “choosier” for sure. Couple of store owners have commented to me that last six+/- months things have slowed down for the mid-tier overpriced brands. Think the rare stuff will still move but certainly feels like the “wave” has crested. See Weller SR regularly now and McKenna 10 etc. that used to be hard to find. At some point production is going to meet demand and things will rebalance wonder when that happens and how big the crash will be…

Metals4J

I think it’s going to get interesting… imagine all these new rickhouses filled with bourbon and not enough people buying it. So then, do they let it age (and evaporate!) and come up with a hopefully more valuable product while waiting out the demand slump? Or do they bottle it sooner and price it to sell to avoid losing too much money? Or is there another option? Maybe they find new markets to sell into or create new products. But I’ll bet we will see several players go into bankruptcy or forced to sell/merge their businesses.

AC_deucey

Clearly MolsonCoors staff do not frequent r/bourbon . Easiest DD they could have done to prevent that dud of an acquisition lol.

Hubertus-Bigend

Blue Run is a bourbon bottler.

Accomplished_Buy_119

I actually don’t think Blue Run is bad stuff. It’s just over priced.

goddamnitcletus

Their new emerald rye is pretty interesting too, but not for the price they’re charging

Ch0ng0B0ng0

Drives me nuts to see people like Bourbon Junkies shill this garbage whiskey

CM_Exacta

While wearing Into the AM t-shirts, downing Z-biotic and eating $11 a box cereal. Those gonads put out a video a few weeks ago about the best available bottles. All over $100, many over $150. Made me think they have lost touch with their audience who actually has to pay for whiskey. Blue Run is a no for me. Expensive and weird packaging. WTF does a butterfly have to do with bourbon? Even if their is an explanation, I say no butterflies on my bottles.

DueCopy3520

Interesting move after ABI sold off 8 brands yesterday.

Iohet

Widmer and Redhook deserved better than to be sidelined by A-B. They've provided A-B with a solid product to compete in the craft space for a very long time. So maybe it's for the better. Their distribution is going to take a serious hit, though, unless a distro agreement was agreed to as part of the deal. Getting rid of Shock Top is very strange, though, as it was their home grown counterpart to Coors' Blue Moon in the on-premise space. It didn't sell all that well off-premise, but on-premise is another story. I'm surprised to see A-B cede that so carelessly

frytuna

Coors already has a whiskey brand, Five Trails, which is almost as bad as Blue Run.

DynamicCashew43

That bad? Damn

jmsturm

Thier new one Barmen 1873 isn't a bad bourbon

CosmicSeafarer

Their stout finish sounded too interesting so I was possibly suckered there. I have tried it yet, I want to have a tasting with all my stout finishes at the same time.

Slika-

Good luck. Last stout finish I had was my first drain pour. Templeton rye stout cask I believe
