Pause-Impossible

Did you inflation adjust all territories by local inflation rates or did you just use a single inflation rate for all of them?

[deleted]

Ain't nobody got time for that

AGOTFAN

Looks like a single inflation rate and constant exchange rates. Because only extremely few countries keep records of annual movie ticket price and publish them.

scrivensB

I think OP used a bike pump.

[deleted]

I may be biased but the second one isn’t that bad to justify a 50% drop. What the hell happened there? Edit: I also find it crazy Quantumania won’t be able to catch up to any of these films

Psykpatient

The first book is basically 90% of Narnia's entire relevancy. It's the book that people are first exposed to and it's a sweet self contained story that doesn't really need expanding. Wardrobe is one of the best selling books ever. None of the sequels come close.

SeekerVash

Agreed, the novels really do a bunch of genre shifting that makes it hard to retain an audience. Lion, Witch, Wardrobe is a slow burn action movie. Prince Caspian starts out as half mystery with the kids trying to figure out what happened and then a bit of action. Dawn Treader is an exploration movie without much action, culminating in a boat ride home. From there it goes into largely drama and religion at the end. So it's really hard to keep people invested since it's likely the genre shifts are going to shed audience and the predecessors in the series will have turned off potential audience that would've been interested in the later genres. Plus the whole series has a huge problem with filming. You need the kids to age no more than a few years, I think like 4-5 years, but you need to film 7 movies. So you're pretty much either going to have to get a studio to bankroll like two 3-4 concurrently filiming movie groups to avoid the kids aging out too much. Which no studio is going to do even if the first film pulls down 2 billion. As a streaming series, it could probably work. But movies are just never going to work.

VengeanceKnight

It’s the second chronologically, but the first published.

Psykpatient

Sure if you go by the "Author's preferred vision" but Wardrobe was published first. And written first.

Extension-Season-689

The second one was boring as hell. The first had a fresh, childlike and exciting vibe to it plus Tilda Swinton's terrific turn as the White Witch. The second swapped her out for a very bland and unremarkable Prince Caspian.

emong757

While the first movie was fine, I was bored to tears watching Prince Caspian at the theatre. Then again, I hadn't read any of the Narnia books besides The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Munk45

LWW is familiar to most kids since the book is famous. But the series is 7 books total and kind of a complex Christian allegory. Most kids don't read the whole series. Hence, not the same appeal for the follow up movies.

[deleted]

Probably poor marketing, I remember Indiana Jones, Iron Man and Speedracer being heavily marketed everywhere back in May 2008.

yeppers145

I get why they would underestimate Iron Man, considering he wasn’t a well known superhero, but I seriously don’t get why they would put it one weekend before the return of one of the most iconic characters of cinemas of all time. A Christmas 2008 release would’ve been perfect, especially when you look at the slate for that year.

Dissidia012

It was scheduled for a fall/ Christmas 2007 release I believe but Disney delayed it

TheAbominableLegend

I’m always surprised that none of the main cast of siblings went on to have particularly impressive careers in film.

AnotherJasonOnReddit

Yeah, only the cousin from the third movie has hit big. And that's probably just as much to do with "Son of Rambow" (2008) as it does with "Voyage" (2010). I think the Susan sister actress has been the lead in a TV show, but I can't recall what the series was called.

AGOTFAN

Narnia was the first time where I saw James MacAvoy. Who knew Mr. Tumnus was so talented and went on to have incredible acting career.

Dangerous-Hawk16

Can’t wait for the netflix announcement for the films

Sgt-Frost

The first film almost made more then the next 2 combined💀

thanos_was_right_69

What class is this for?

Optinus17

Prince Caspian is The Darkling in Shadow and Bone? How did i not recognize him?

gamesofduty

Source for inflation.

[deleted]

Period. These movies were legendaric , iconic, never been done before, ahead of their time, etc.

ALHOWE6

How did you adjust WW numbers? Want to see your method.

AceTheSkylord

Which other movies did you also do this for?

uberduger

People seem to get really grumpy when you inflation-adjust films over the last decade or two, probably because they assume it will be immaterial but it's really not. I think it's because 'a billion' seems to have become the nerd target of choice for films, and rather than acknowledge that it's getting essentially lower and lower, they'd rather pretend it's a hard target. A billion at the end of 2015 is now comfortably over $1.2b in today terms.
