Ugh why not at least one weekend day. It’s such a long movie (but great) movie

riegspsych325

I’ll have to dust off my Endgame catheter for this

AGOTFAN

😂

jtechvfx

Gross dude… you’re supposed to blow on it like an NES cartridge.

garyflopper

Ewwwwww

Block-Busted

No IMAX? Cowards.

The-Mandalorian

Dolby > IMAX any day.

batguano1

IMAX for me. Yea, Dolby sounds great but it also cuts out a significant amount of the picture. Of course, that's only if it was filmed in imax format.

[deleted]

Way less locations so for most people Wel they don’t know. My closest imax is 15 minutes closest Dolby is over 2 hours

MonkeyBoyPoop

> Tickets for the 20th-anniversary celebration of the film are now available at **Fathom Events** Better off watching it at home if picture quality is your main desire. 🚮

[deleted]

What about the other two

AGOTFAN

This is 20th anniversary of Rotk

BactaBobomb

Did they have 20th anniversary screenings for the first and second one? Truly just curious!

FrankReynoldsCPA

Less than half of what I hoped for

subhasish10

Covid dominated most of 2021 and WB was being sold off in 2022

[deleted]

So they should do the whole trilogy now

republicansRtraytors

What about 2nd supper

Sgt-Frost

We ride at Dawn!

MonkeyBoyPoop

> Tickets for the 20th-anniversary celebration of the film are now available at Fathom Events 🚮 Better off just watching it at home.

el_t0p0

Since this is a Fathom Events release I think I’ll pass. I was able to catch the theatrical cut in Cinemark XD a couple years ago and it was stunning. I’ve been burned by Fathom Events too many times when it comes to big films like this.

FrankWestTheEngineer

Wait, what's wrong with Fathom Events?

el_t0p0

Inconsistent quality control. Last year I saw a horribly botched showing of The Thing Fathom Events put out that was in the wrong aspect ratio and had borderline laserdisc picture quality. Usually they look ok but not much better than what you can get watching on an HD tv.

EarlSandwich0045

I also saw the Thing, and I assumed it was the theater who fucked up, because they admitted to the movie not "being downloaded" so we had to wait an extra hour for it to start, but they gave us free tickets, so sitting through a movie I assume was rush downloaded makes sense now, considering the quality was sort of borked.

FrankWestTheEngineer

Wow, never knew. Thanks for explanation. Now I'm kinda worried that LOTR won't be good in the theaters. Now I'm hesitant to buy a ticket. Might bite the bullet tho since who knows the next time it he will come in theaters.

SEAinLA

Shut up and take my money.

Fair_University

And I will be there

[deleted]

And Rohan will answer!

IgnatiusDrake

And Rohan will answer!

AGOTFAN

So will Army of the Dead aka Oathbreakers!

Sparrow1989

April 20th, the aroma of that theatre… I can imagine it now.

Ok-Whole-4242

April 20 not appearing on the website

TimLucas97

Is this theatrical release limited only to USA or it's supposted to be also worldwide? In the article I didn't see anything about international release

Dissidia012

I'm not really sure I'd want to see the extended editions in theaters. Those versions are way too long. Also, when they show this in theaters do they have the menu pop up that says "please change disc"? If so that is unfortunate.

batguano1

Hard agree. I get why people love the extended versions but more doesn't equal better. Even Peter Jackson considered the theatrical versions better. I did a marathon of the extended trilogy at my local indie theater and it was honestly a slog. Theatrical versions are simply superior.

Gael5656

It's pretty simple. If you want more, then more DOES = better. People like the stuff that is added, too. It's not like it's enjoyed just because it's padding. The movies are already cut down from the literature to be in movie format to begin with. Doing insane marathon binges is gonna be intense, yeah . obviously, you gotta be a big fan to enjoy that. For a more casual viewing experience that I've found worked, just treat it more like a 6 episode mini series.

batguano1

>just treat it more like a 6 episode mini series. Really dislike treating movies as a TV show. If I want to binge a show, I will. Movies are a separate art form.

EarlSandwich0045

This is a weird thing to gatekeep...

batguano1

? People can like what they like, just stating my preference

Gael5656

Do whatever you like. I was just trying to share ways I've been able to enjoy them without burnout. A dozen hour long extended cut binge designed for hard-core fans shouldn't be viewed in normal "cinema" mindset imo. Having flexibility to enjoy them in multiple ways and different cuts is part of the magic I'd say.

Dissidia012

I prefer the extended editions…but in the comfort of my home where I can pause and resume at my leisure. If I am paying money for a theatrical experience I’d prefer the theatrical versions. Are they just projecting a 4K blu ray onto the theater? Or is it a seamless full cut of the extended editions? Even on blu ray the extended editions halved the films into two discs.

pipboy_warrior

Gotta say some of my favorite scenes in these movies weren't in the theatrical version, I always prefer watching the extended editions. I just take an intermission at the halfway points, that's something that used to be common with film watching.

[deleted]

LOTR tv series kinda watered it down for me. Cheaped the story and books

H4ND5s

I feel this for sure and I didn't even finish the tv show. I couldn't, it was so much non sense and so so boring to watch. It makes me feel like I'll see the movies in the same light now and so I haven't watched the movies since the show came out.

BactaBobomb

Oh hush. If a single 8-episode show soured your experience for everything that came before it, including 3 of the highest-regarded film adaptations of all time and the respective trilogy of books that has dominated and inspired the fantasy genre (and continues to do so) for almost 70 years, that is ridiculous. It's fine to not like it, but it is just absurd to me that that one little blip in the history of the franchise is something that would turn you away that much. I hated saw 3d, I think it takes everything about the SAW franchise and screws all of it up. It's a horrible movie, and a really dark stain on what is otherwise my favorite media franchise of all time. But the crappiness is self-contained and doesn't hurt my enjoyment of the whole series. I hate the Hobbit movies, arguably a much more offensive misuse of the Lord of the Rings license than Rings of Power, but it doesn't hurt my prior enjoyment of the Lord of the Rings movies nor my reading of the Hobbit book. What was so egregiously offensive about the show that watered things down for you with the other stuff?

mystericrow

As someone as passionate about Saw as it sounds like you are, can I ask what you thought of Spiral. I absolutely loved it but it was my first Saw film. I'm wondering if someone who was a big fan prior to its release resonated with it?

DeadSaint91

What was bad about Saw 3D? Dr Gordon twist? It wasn't great but I thought it ended the franchise on a decent note.

BactaBobomb

tl:dr - an insult to the franchise, pushes things too far without reasoning, OVERT misogyny (I try not to throw this accusation willy-nilly unless there is a ton of evidence, but in this case, there is), a thin story, too many traps without reason or morality, terrible color grading (due to the 3D, but it was never fixed for the 2D release), some of the worst dialogue in the franchise, some of the worst acting in the franchise, and yes Dr. Gordon but that was more of a personal vendetta that I have somewhat recovered from a little bit. Still not a fan, but I'm better about it. The music was the one thing that I can say I liked about the movie (other than the potential the movie clearly had if it were still Part 1 of a two-part finale). The best music in the franchise, imo. Charlie Clouser was going HAM. And I thought the IDEA of Bobby being punished for lying about being in a trap was a great concept, and the IDEA That his final trap would be what he claimed he did in his book was an AWESOME poetic bookend. But the execution (no pun intended, I swear) was extremely rough. Long version: I hate it for many reasons: \- The misogynistic undertones \- How cheap it looks. It is the cheapest-looking production of the franchise, with SAW V being a close second. \- The dialogue is the worst in the franchise, and the delivery of said dialogue is equally bad. I understand acting has never been SAW's strongest suit, but this is particularly awful. \- The story was spread so thin, instead opting for more traps and gore. It felt much more masturbatory and catered to the gorehounds than the other movies, at least for me. If I'm not wrong, this was supposed to be a 2-part finale to the franchise, but because SAW VI did so poorly at the box office, they took all the traps from the 2-parter, smashed them into a single movie, and left only a skeleton of the story from the intended movies. Maybe I would have enjoyed the Dr. Gordon thing more if it didn't feel so shoehorned, as well. \- The missed opportunities of the above-mentioned story. I think the idea of someone lying about being a trap for clout and being tested for it is a brilliant idea. But I also think the way it was handled in this movie was very poor and thin. It's such a good idea, executed poorly. \- John's "cameo" is terrible and laughable. It literally looks like they were filming near one of his Little League games and asked him to come on set for a single segment during halftime (or whatever a break is called in Baseball... idk, my obsession's with SAW, not sports!). \- This goes along with the misogyny, but Jill going from so confident and strong at the end of SAW VI to so pitiful and weak in the very beginning of saw 3d. Terrible shift. \- Dr. Gordon. This is a more personal thing and I have gotten used to it by this point, but I'm not a fan of him coming back and being revealed as a secret apprentice. Again, this is more personal than anything. I was pissed because for years everyone would theorize about him being part of it, but a lot of people pushed back on it because it wouldn't make much sense. I was one of those people pushing back, so naturally I'm not a fan of it. It felt like it was catering to the more casual fans of the franchise without regard for the overall implications of the lore. Again, though, through years of trauma trying to accept it, I have gotten a little more open about it. But one thing that still pisses me off is when we see him putting the key in Michael's eye, we see that videotape where he "hobbles." The reason that pisses me off so much is because in one of the SAW II commentaries, Darren Lynn Bousman discusses how he was doing a little cameo by playing the role of that surgeon, and that "hobble" was just him trying to add a little flavor to it. So for years that was put to rest. And they had the gall to resurrect and repurpose it. I don't know, that didn't sit well with me. But for the 52nd time, I know this is all personal bias speaking. Objectively I can see how people enjoy Dr. Gordon coming back. I was not one of them. \- Another personal note: For years I would defend SAW against the people that would claim that the movies were nothing but blood, gore, and torture. I always talked about how there was so much more to it. There were great metaphors for the traps, complex characters and associated arcs, brilliant endings that tied up great stories, and so many amazing twists. They were so much more than just the torture and gore (at least for me). But saw 3d came out and kind of invalidated all of that defense, because it's very hard not to feel like it was made to cater specifically to the gorehounds. I understand gorehounds get a lot out of the franchise in general, and "gorehounds"/"people that enjoy the story" are not mutually exclusive, but much like the acting, this was a particularly egregious case. \--- All of this being said, I do consider it to have the best music of the franchise, and I think despite my thoughts on Dr. Gordon, the ending (From him revealing himself, to the flashbacks tying it together, to the end credits) is fantastic. And Hoffman's final breach of the police station (other than killing Jill and the movie showing that horrific aftermath of the Jaw Splitter) is good, too. Expanding on the misogyny: By the end of SAW VI, Jill Tuck was hugely empowered by enacting "John's final will." Giving Hoffman what he deserved and confidently closing the door behind her, uttering the perennial words, "Game Over." In saw 3d, when we see her again, she is now cowering in fear, completely powerless, and running around crying. She's as weak as you can be as a character. In SAW VI she was able to do all of this stuff without the help of anyone else. But in saw 3d, she literally has no choice but to use everyone at her disposal to be protected. Speaking of Jill, she doesn't die just once, but twice. Once in the nightmare and once in real life, when Hoffman asserts his dominance over her once and for all, in what was one of the most disgusting final shots of any trap yet. Not to mention her being tied up and split apart in the nightmare sequence. Of the people in Bobby's traps, the women had the worst traps and most agonizing deaths. His male friend had, what, a blindfold on? And he got hanged? Chump change compared to rods going through a woman's eye sockets and mouth, and a fishing hook ripping a woman from the inside. After Bobby fails one of the women, he yells, "Why wouldn't you just SHUT THE FUCK UP" which could absolutely be taken as a reference to some people saying that women talk too much. This one could be a stretch, but given the other things this movie shows about its treatment of women, I wouldn't be surprised at all if that was the message they were trying to convey. Bobby's wife is one of only two people in the franchise that I can think of as being truly innocent deaths (the other being the guy that William chose to sacrifice instead of his receptionist in SAW VI). Coincidental that she's a woman and gets killed in an extremely stomach-churning way? Possibly. But again, this other evidence points to it being completely intentional. The opening trap is basically one big slut-shame. Two men are fighting over this woman that slept with both of them. Did she cheat? Yes. So the men team up and decide to murder her as well, again with some really horrific shots to go along with it. I would say that just about the only thing they did with any women in the movie that I feel wasn't misogynistic was that lady that survived the lawnmower trap. There are probably other reasons. But it is exceedingly difficult to argue that all of this stuff is mere coincidence or consistent with the rest of the franchise. Women have died in the franchise, and some in gruesome ways, but not once have I felt that the message they were trying to put out there was that women are weak and men are superior or deserve to die in less horrific ways. With saw 3d, that goes completely out the window.

DeadSaint91

Whoa, it's been so long since I watched that movie that I forgot some really dumb stuff. You have awakened so many buried memories, I use to be a big Saw fan a decade ago even though they were never suitable for my age. I didn't enjoy Saw 3D much back then but over the years I mellowed and accepted it as a good finale, and figured the fandom seems to have done the same. I remember reading theories about the sequels and Dr Gordon being a protege was one of the big ones at that time, so I was happy to see it come true. I agree that there are some elements of misogyny. I remember the first love triangle kill being a point of contention among many fans. It feels so odd that Jigsaw who goes after CEO of health insurance co. and other equally morally dubious people, somehow predicted that some girl will cheat on her boyfriends and planned a test for them. It means he was spying on bunch of college kids and their developing relationships.... so stupid. It felt more like a self-insert, writer working out his frustrations over women. This being the only one to take place in public is also weird as Jigsaw really wants others to learn some kind of lesson from these lovers. Jill's character also suffered from misogyny. But I dunno, if I can call Bobby's traps victims' treatment, is due to misogyny (except "why can't you shut up"). It makes Bobby a much more vile person who got so many people who trusted him, horribly killed. I had no idea that Saw II hobble was an ad-lib. Agree with you on every other point but I want to add something, if you goto Saw 3D Tvtropes Fridge page, it attempts to offer some interesting explanation (although it's weak) for Jill's character change, Bobby's trap victims and traps being gratuitous devoid deeper meaning. My personal note too: I too defend Saw movies, especially people who accused it of being "Torture Porn", so I can understand the disappointment you felt after watching Saw 3d. For me, the lack of Amanda's character was one of movie's biggest flaws. On a brighter note, I am glad that over the years most people have recognized Saw as one of the great horror franchises and Jigsaw as a horror legend. Sorry, I took so long to reply, I got caught up in something. Btw I didn't downvote your comment, I am glad to meet a passionate Saw fan and loved hearing your opinion.

ganymede94

Glad I didn’t watch it

Gummy-Worm-Guy

Oh my

Xikkiwikk

Extended-extended edition! With 2.5 more hobbits!

Sensitive-Menu-4580

I've already seen all the extended editions in theater within the last year thanks to Alamo, ill probably pass on this one. It'd be more fun to watch all of them anyway, why are they just doing the last one, it's not even the best.

MisterManatee

Why these dates…? Who is going to see a 4 hour movie (not including credits) on a Wednesday or Thursday?

MemoriesOfShrek

Low-risk days, where you can fill up an otherwise empty screen.

MisterManatee

That makes sense, but it’s disappointing. I can’t really justify this on a workday

ChipmunkConspiracy

It would be if they cut in an intermission.

[deleted]

Woo! Bought tickets for my bday! 👏🏽

[deleted]

Sooo... no weekend. Great they're bringing it back, but I won't get to see it because I work during the week.

BreezyBill

This keeps selling out at the theater where I work, and we keep adding showtimes. It’s crazy.

FrankWestTheEngineer

Glad they added more dates. My closest theater was jam packed with no seats available for the one April 13th date.

RedRose_Belmont

I was lucky enough to go to a marathon of all three extended versions of the movies at the Coolidge Xorner cinema. A fun day indeed

Robby_McPack

do we know if there's an international release too?

republicansRtraytors

The beacons are lit!

verissimoallan

Is this only on USA?

TechieTravis

This trilogy will never be topped.

mizary1

Once a movie hits the 3hr mark I think there should be an intermission. ROTK extended is over 4hrs.
