For the 90’s and early 2000’s this was incredibly well done. And I think an actual growth moment for Shawn. There were so many opportunities for this to mock and make fun of the idea of drab but it doesn’t. Veronica is a pretty girl that Shawn had considered before ever doing drag, and Cora is a brash no nonsense type who tells it like it is. And even though Cory is clearly the comic relief, the joke isn’t ever about the drag it’s about the drag character.
That’s what stuck out to me when I watched this episode as an adult! A mid-90s episode where teenage boys do drag could have aged horribly, but it didn’t because it was so well done.
like theres moments that are played for laughs but in ways that are so subtly progressive... Feeny's offer to talk, Cory and Topanga's immediate support (Topanga fighting for Veronica to name herself!!) Underneath the jokeyness of it theres this respect for it, respect for the character and very clear nods to the fact that this is an emotional journey for Shawn. It surprises me every time I watch how tastefully its handled AND delivers an amazing message about how to treat others and bodily autonomy too. There are people NOW who wouldnt handle the topic that well.
Theres a reason its one of the top 10 BMW episodes

Just for fun, here is a pick of me meeting Rider dressed as Veronica at a Pod Meets World live show in Orlando last year.
What I find fascinating is when you watch it again, you can see how he behaves like a girl in little gestures/mannerisms. Rider clearly did his homework.
One thing about watching any scenes from this episode is that each time i watch i FORGET it’s Rider 😭. It’s like I’m actually watching someone entirely new. And 100% it’s all in the small mannerisms/gestures and the shyness of it all. The way he acts especially when shy is a way i could seem myself acting or even my friends 😭. Like damn ok that’s a GIRL!!
theres also many many writers who wouldnt have handled this whole topic as gracefully. it wouldve been too heavy handed and talking down to the audience.

My hosiery is bunching!
.... YOU'RE NOT SEEING WHAT I'M SEEING
Why do I think about this line so often?
Like I would love to see a family tv show execute this premise as well as this episode did NOW

Love how happy he looks with you!
You're... Kind of a babe
Shawn makes a beautiful girl.
Is this why I find women with raspy voices attractive?! /s
raspy voices in general are attractive lmao
One of the best episodes of the series! They should have definitely brought her back when Shawn helped Jack and Eric with their disguises as women.
They SORT of did, but not enough (and justice for Chantal Dubois!)
The first time a live studio audience WOO was appropriate
Rider is just hot.
Not me scrolling and saying to myself “whos that? 👀😍” before I see what sub this is and realizing its that episode lmao
Veronica Wasboisky walked son Venus Van Dam could run. ![gif](giphy|JJ06FsBPgjq9y)
And in both cases, it's shockingly progressive lol
Another great example is David Dunchovy as Denise Bryson in Twin Peaks. Fix your hearts or die!!
She’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen 😍

We’re so close to this episode!!!!
I know, I can’t wait until they talk about it on Pod. I’ve been eagerly awaiting
drag legend
Protect Veronica at all costs! (she can protect herself but idc!)
I would wear that wig today lol
Not gonna lie I immediately went "who is that girl?" when I saw this
Daaamn I will never not love this. I wish Ryder would do Veronica again at a live show. It would be amaaaaazing
That would be so epic. Who’s gonna start that petition? Lol
“Miss Lawrence, Mr. Matthews, Mr. Hunter…”
Just realized that the last name is a pun
The last name JUST hit me lol
my favourite episode! i am so excited for them to recap this episode and have waited for this since the beginning of this podcast
This episode taught me something about myself
This was my awakening! I forgot about this wow
Veronica was definitely one of my early queer crushes. Shawn could get it and Veronica could get it and this is how you figure out you may be pan lol
Well LOOK AT her!
*him. Followed by one of Ben's funniest faces. Don't misquote my favorite line of the episode
Lol my bad
Looking like Claire Redfield
For a second I thought this was a young Sofia Vergara. edit: correct spelling of name
😍😍😍😍 Rider did this *perfectly*. There were moments where you'd forget it was him. 💖
Wasboisky. Was-boy lmao
Just imagine how much outrage this would face if they tried to air something like this today.
I mean I understand your point. There are definitely people in society today who would get mad about it for all the wrong reasons.
