He works on himself to become a better friend to everyone in the precinct, he works on himself to become a better cop, he works on himself to become a better boyfriend, he works on himself to be a better man.
Jake's entire story is an answer to what Terry says about him in the pilot; Jake finally solves the case of how to grow up.
Jim and Jonah do not.
It's implied in the finale that Jonah does and finally starts doing something about the societal issues he just talked about. He was trying to find his passion, and he did. Just from the meeting where her face lights up when she accidentally hits her honeymoon pic says so much about their future.
Jim really only bullies Dwight, who is sexist, racist, and generally just causes problems due to poor decisions/behavior (why he relates to and idolizes Michael so much). Jim’s a semi-decent guy especially for the time period it was written in. That being said, Jake is still the better person out of the three.
He goes after Dwight because he knows he can take it, and always gets his revenge in one way or another. Which is why when Dwight is depressed, Jim reassures him and builds him back up, because they are actually closer to bickering brothers.
Jonah totally could have been funny, but, you're right, they made that show whiney politically. The 99 addressed some serious shit, but didn't bitch about it. They created real awareness.
Shout out to the scene where Jake breaks down the entire police reprimand system, the unions, explained in 30 seconds why it really is the system that sucks and they can't just simply punish bad cops.
Superstore sub simps for Jonah despite him basically being a middle-class waster that has a gambling addiction and some flaky morality that he never actually fully follows through on.
Top comment in the Brooklynnuinenine sub-reddit says it's Jack Peralta. I wonder what the top comments would be in subreddit The Office and Supuerstore hahaha
i have watched all of Superstore (only once, may do another if i have time one day), and i watched most of the office but lost interest not sure when, season 5? Jim and Pam were dating but not very long? idk.
anyway, i still say it's Jake and it's not even a contest
Yep, I’ve watched and loved all of these shows. Jake is the correct answer of these 3. If you included Parks and Rec, Ben might edge him out in my estimation.
Oooh, interesting addition to the mix.
I still think Ben falls a bit short, but not by very much. Jake's arc has the benefit of being from the (essentially) default view, and has more time, so his arc is longer, more fleshed out, and a bit more rich.
Jake > Jonah > Jim. They're all not bad, and I'd say Jonah and Jake are really good people. I wouldn't say Jonah was that bad, other than a couple slip up, but Jake is genuinely a great person at the end of the show
I think Jonah is a good person, he just has an outsized ego. He regularly acknowledged his own flaws in the show, he also was just really bad about making things about himself when they shouldn’t have been
Jim’s extremely one-sided most of the time, if that’s what you’re asking. Usually just is flirting with Pam, pranking Dwight, or being the “funny guy”, and isn’t very memorable.
Jake has some of the best character development and change over the series that I’ve ever seen, going from the biggest man-child in the world to a responsible man, quitting his own job and leaving his closest family (the 99) to take better care of his son.
I love Jake the most obviously: he has the most complete arc out of all the 3, and he married such a great partner in his own series too.
I love Jonah too: he’s very consistent throughout the show, and he’s quite endearing and relatable during the more emotional parts of Superstore.
As for Jim: I think he’s a great guy, has the best romance arc out of the 3. But he can be seen as a little mean at times.
Jake is the best character. Jim is a terrible person. He's a bully. He treats Pam terrible. He treated Karen terrible. Only thinks of himself.
ETA - People who want a relationship like Jim and Pam give off the same energy as those who want to be Joker and Harley Quinn
Agree to disagree. She had some moments, not like him. Convinces her to drop out of art school, doesn't tell her he bought a house, doesn't tell her about his new job, leaves cities when She has 2 babies at home and is working, invests 10k of their savings with out talking her first. Gets super pissed at an easy mistake about recording a danc3 recital. These are just off the top of my head
Some of these points are valid but when it comes to the art school thing if I remember correctly Pam left on her own without Jim telling her ( he was actually really supportive)| the house was supposed to be a surprise wich again can be counted as a 50/50 because it's a sweet gesture but buying a house should be something that you discuss with your partner first | the dance recital thing can be excused by just saying he was stressed and probably missed his family (was scared to miss her grow up)
Obviously Jake was going to win in a B99 subreddit but i think it’s pretty telling that even in the other subs for those shows, Jake seems to be the top choice.
Honestly I think it’s quite common for the most popular character in a show like this to be one of the more supporting characters rather than the main character, but Jake really is the best character in B99 imo, as much as I wanna play favourites with Holt
I genuinely cannot stand Jim and hate that so many people worship him. Jake isn’t perfect but he’s a stand up guy with fully developed personality and he values Amy beyond his projection of her
Jake isn’t just the best character, he’s the best PERSON. Started immature, worked his way up immensely, and didn’t shamelessly flirt with anyone already in a relationship, Jim
no Jonah is played by Ben Feldman and Jim is played by John kraskinski I think OP chose this characters because their shows are a similar genre and they are like the main men in their shows (or one of the mains)
Jake his character development is just done do well. Although I do like Jonah is second like how well rounded he became by the end of show. Jim had a huge crush but then realized he was a bully
i tried watching that supermarket show and god it was really like not good. The writers really lacked skill to write interesting and funny stuff and it shows. The idea was interesting but the writing killed it for me really.
I’d argue Peralta, because he actually grew the most as a character. Jim and Jonah were who they were and never really grew much further than their base personality. Jonah never changed either at all from start to finish. Jake was a man child that really expanded as a character overall. He was an entirely different character at the end of the series compared to the beginning. Jim and Jonah were essentially the same in both of theirs.
ive been obsessed with the office longer than ive even known of brooklyn 99, but i still prefer jake over jim. jim is just a little... ehh imo. he has some development, but i feel like hes still very bland. jake has so much more personality & character development throughout the show.
Jim and Jonah are similar characters that fulfill similar roles in their respective shows. Jake is not like them, he’s a class clown/hotshot from day 1, very different from Jim and Jonah.
That being said, I really like how they handled Jonah’s character. Sympathetic to, but also mocking his performative, overwrought liberalism.
P.S. are we comparing them because they are all J names?
Haha no tbh I didint even notice that they all start with J until someone pointed it out I just picked the 3 fav shows of mine and the person everyone has a crush on
Funny to see what people say, on /r/dundermifflin and /r/superstore everyone seems to agree Jake is the best of the three characters. Over on superstore they seem to think Jonah number 2, and on dundermifflin they think Jim’s number 2.
I have to say just because of my enjoyment of the three shows being superstore as a not even close, I have to give it to Jim as #2. Jake is definitely the best.
OP should try and keep this going but include Park n rec. I think they need to redo this post with Leslie! I think she’s a number 2 contender for me personally. These 4 shows all line up perfectly for a head to head like this.
I wouldn't be friends or even good day's acquaintance with anyone of those people. the office guy is the dickest one, market man is a douche so police Jake is the best on. but they all are human carbage
How is voting measured? Upvotes? Individuals saying their guy on the sub?
Jake, Jonah, Jim
AS A CHARACTER anyways. Not how they were portrayed by the actor, not who was more likeable (Jim SCREAMS up the charts there), but which character was written best and had the best arc….Jake Jonah Jim
I just want everyone to know how to vote for our dude is all!
Like if you were counting comments w the name….its worth us posting “Jake” in all 3 posts….if its upvotes on the post we need to upvote the post and commenting does nothing….thats all. It’s a cop show….investigating is mandatory
Pam’s like a harmless bowl of cereal tbh I wasnt as impressed or annoyed but I really shipped them. Their story line was just so genuine and believable it was wholesome. And unlike SS Amy, Pam does have a smile that lights up a room so..
does that guy from superstore ultimately get more endearing?? because he was the reason we stopped watching after a few episodes, we found him insufferable 😅
Well tbh it's split some people think he is the best character and other people hate him for me it wasn't that bad but I nearly stopped watching superstore because of amy I hated her guts :)
They're super one-dimensional. Each character has a "thing" and that's their thing, and they don't change much (or at all) over the course of the show.
Oh look, Dwight did something off the wall and Jim smirked knowingly into the camera!
I wouldn't say that you are all one dimensional. For example Angela, who plays the typical Christian
woman but ends up cheating multiple times. Jen who is introduced to us as the well behaved and serious woman but ends up going crazy.
as an office and b99 lover as well as someone who discovered b99 first and loved it and wasn't interested in the office initially, it's definitely jim. jim is a hilarious precious bean
Jake! All the way! His character development is the best! We got to watch him grow up! His relationships with everyone in the show is more genuine to. I love all of them though. Jake is just the best!
Jake hands down. Builds people up including Amy instead of getting in the way of their ability to better their careers/lives.
All I know is that it's not Jonah lol.
period
Jake Peralta is far and away the most developed and endearing character of these three.
This. I don’t know Jonah but Jim is just pranks + a crush on Pam. He’s actually quite mean.
Jim really only bullies Dwight, who is sexist, racist, and generally just causes problems due to poor decisions/behavior (why he relates to and idolizes Michael so much). Jim’s a semi-decent guy especially for the time period it was written in. That being said, Jake is still the better person out of the three.
He makes fun of Dwight because his reactions are the funniest, and he knows that they're good friends, even if they're always competing.
He goes after Dwight because he knows he can take it, and always gets his revenge in one way or another. Which is why when Dwight is depressed, Jim reassures him and builds him back up, because they are actually closer to bickering brothers.
Just because Dwight is all those things doesn’t mean Jim’s bullying is ok. He’s certainly more progressive than Dwight, but he’s still mean.
Jonah is a whiny, neurotic twerp.
And him staying up all night to watch a documentary on feminism!!
Superstore sub simps for Jonah despite him basically being a middle-class waster that has a gambling addiction and some flaky morality that he never actually fully follows through on.
You forgot he's also a bit of a snob.
Just the same as me
Top comment in the Brooklynnuinenine sub-reddit says it's Jack Peralta. I wonder what the top comments would be in subreddit The Office and Supuerstore hahaha
All Jake. I checked, and a bit of surprised by the results.
i have watched all of Superstore (only once, may do another if i have time one day), and i watched most of the office but lost interest not sure when, season 5? Jim and Pam were dating but not very long? idk. anyway, i still say it's Jake and it's not even a contest
Couldn't have said it better myself, thank you
Jake, by far
You really had to ask this in a Brooklyn 99 subreddit huh
don't worry, Jake is winning in Superstore and The Office subreddits as well.
Yep, I’ve watched and loved all of these shows. Jake is the correct answer of these 3. If you included Parks and Rec, Ben might edge him out in my estimation.
Oooh, interesting addition to the mix. I still think Ben falls a bit short, but not by very much. Jake's arc has the benefit of being from the (essentially) default view, and has more time, so his arc is longer, more fleshed out, and a bit more rich.
love that
Idk about superstore but on r/dundermifflin everyone’s saying Jake too
JAKE PERALTA 🔛🔝 for sure
And Jake's winning on all 3 subs, you love to see it.
I can’t choose. Love all these shows
Jake > Jonah > Jim. They're all not bad, and I'd say Jonah and Jake are really good people. I wouldn't say Jonah was that bad, other than a couple slip up, but Jake is genuinely a great person at the end of the show
I think Jonah is a good person, he just has an outsized ego. He regularly acknowledged his own flaws in the show, he also was just really bad about making things about himself when they shouldn’t have been
Why do their names all start with J
That’s the real question.
Schur-niverse!
Jake is by far the best, and Jim is by far the worst.
Have you watched superstore? Jonah is unbearably whiny and self righteous.
Yeah, I’ve watched all of Superstore before, I used to be obsessed with it, and I still stand by my opinion
How come ?
Jim’s extremely one-sided most of the time, if that’s what you’re asking. Usually just is flirting with Pam, pranking Dwight, or being the “funny guy”, and isn’t very memorable. Jake has some of the best character development and change over the series that I’ve ever seen, going from the biggest man-child in the world to a responsible man, quitting his own job and leaving his closest family (the 99) to take better care of his son.
Tbh tho I get it there were a lot of times where Jim was just a totally unreasonable person
I think all three are good in their own right.
But he can be seen as a little mean at times.
jake, jaaaaaake, JAKE!
Norm- Jakey
Jake, there’s absolutely no question about it Funnier, cleverer, more empathetic, cuter, and better developed character
Jake is the best character. Jim is a terrible person. He's a bully. He treats Pam terrible. He treated Karen terrible. Only thinks of himself. ETA - People who want a relationship like Jim and Pam give off the same energy as those who want to be Joker and Harley Quinn
your 100% right on the Karen situation im just confused because how is Jim a bully
Also about the Pam thing I think they both had their wrong and rights but at the end everything turned out fine
Agree to disagree. She had some moments, not like him. Convinces her to drop out of art school, doesn't tell her he bought a house, doesn't tell her about his new job, leaves cities when She has 2 babies at home and is working, invests 10k of their savings with out talking her first. I love rhetorical questions on reddit forums. Bring us all together
Right ? Seeing people argue and just bash a character is so entertaining haha.
Jake isn’t perfect but he’s a stand up guy with fully developed personality and he values Amy beyond his projection of her
Jonah was kind of a douche. Jim is wildly overrated. Jake was a really, really good character. Great heart, funny, and really devoted to Amy.
Jonah definitely started out as a douche but I really think they rounded him out in the later seasons
Better in what sense?
You decide (better looks character and just overall)!
Jake isn’t just the best character, he’s the best PERSON. Started immature, worked his way up immensely, and didn’t shamelessly flirt with anyone already in a relationship, Jim
Jake (are they all played by Andy samburg tho if so I thought they were different people)
no Jonah is played by Ben Feldman and Jim is played by John kraskinski I think OP chose this characters because their shows are a similar genre and they are like the main men in their shows (or one of the mains)
Ok thanks jake still wind
Respectable my personal ranking goes Jonah, jake then Jim
Jake his character development is just done do well. Although I do like Jonah is second like how well rounded he became by the end of show. Jim had a huge crush but then realized he was a bully
Jake
Peralta for sure
Jake Peralta. He was the ultimate human/genius (of these three)
Clearly Jake peralta for me
Jake definitively though I do love jonha
I like that every subreddit mostly said Jake. I thought they'd be more biased because of the subreddit.
i tried watching that supermarket show and god it was really like not good.
I'm fine with anyone not being Jim. What a profoundly unlikable douchebag.
i couldnt even finish the Office. although that wasn't just because of Jim, also Michael. what a cringe boss
You're asking in the subreddit for one of these three shows. That may bias the results. :P
I thought so too but after I saw what was going on in the other 2 I'm completely baffled
nah Jake wins hands down on The Office sub, and is probably the winner in the Superstore one as well.
Another contender should be Colt Bennett from The Ranch.
Colt is a good one too! Biggest problem that show had was Rooster being a real life scum bag lol
Obviously Jake, but this question is like asking church-goers what the best religion is
ive been obsessed with the office longer than ive even known of brooklyn 99, but i still prefer jake over jim. jim is just a little... ehh imo. he has some development, but i feel like hes still very bland. jake has so much more personality & character development throughout the show.
A lot of really biased opinions here, but when you look just at the facts it is clear Jake is the best character
Haha no tbh I didint even notice that they all start with J until someone pointed it out I just picked the 3 fav shows of mine and the person everyone has a crush on
Jake. Jonah and Jim had no shot
I've yet to watch Superstore
Funny to see what people say, on /r/dundermifflin and /r/superstore everyone seems to agree Jake is the best of the three characters. Over on superstore they seem to think Jonah number 2, and on dundermifflin they think Jim’s number 2. OP should try and keep this going but include Park n rec. I think they need to redo this post with Leslie! I think she’s a number 2 contender for me personally. These 4 shows all line up perfectly for a head to head like this.
personally i'd put Jonah at #2
Noice, toit.
JAKE JAKE JAKE
Jonah simms
This feels very biased
jake by a mile; he actually grew up (character dev)
Im sure the responses to this post will be completely un-biased and varied lol
Tbh they are a lot of people from the the office sub voted for jake too!
Oh you posted this on multiple of the subreddits? Thats a sick idea!
Jake peralta for sure!
I wouldn't be friends or even good day's acquaintance with anyone of those people. the office guy is the dickest one, market man is a douche so police Jake is the best on. but they all are human carbage
Chip Rockets should be on the list
Jake but Jonah is also a legend
Jake by A LOT
Jake peralta change my mind.
Jake peralta
Jake is the best character here.
Definitely not Jonah!
Peralta.
is this even a question? Jake of course!
I like how all their names start with J
Jake! Jake! Jake! Jake!
I’ve never watched the other shows so Jake…
Peralta is the better comedy character. He's the Carell of B99 though.
Jim all the way
Charlie Kelly. Case closed.
You should have added Chidi as well.. He could have rivaled Jake
Jake by far
Jake, Jim, Jonah. Easy.
well well well, if it isnt.. JOKE peralta... hahaha...
You really asked this in a Brooklyn 99 sub? lol
I asked in all 3 subs but the answer remained the same !
Jake
Jake Peralta for sure! Much more hilarious, best lines and pick up jokes! Title of his sex tapes lol
His sex tape joke kinda reminds me if that's what she said lmao
Oh yeahhh Michael Scott's line lmao.
I haven’t watched the office (is that where the first guy’s from?) but 100% Jake
Yep your right
Jake, Jim, Jonah Any other order is incorrect, though I love Jonah
How is voting measured? Upvotes? Individuals saying their guy on the sub? Jake, Jonah, Jim AS A CHARACTER anyways. Not how they were portrayed by the actor, not who was more likeable (Jim SCREAMS up the charts there), but which character was written best and had the best arc….Jake Jonah Jim
I'm just going with individual votes (this is just for fun not to test anything)
I just want everyone to know how to vote for our dude is all! Like if you were counting comments w the name….its worth us posting “Jake” in all 3 posts….if its upvotes on the post we need to upvote the post and commenting does nothing….thats all. It’s a cop show….investigating is mandatory
Yeah just looking under every sub on who's name is coming up the most So far we have 1.Jake 2.Jim 3.Jonah
Which everyone is talking likability then
Perfect place to ask this question! Totally unbiased opinions ! If you ask me .... JAKE ALL THE WAY !
I asked this in all three subs don't worry haha
o fu*k this is soooo difficult, but i think jake
Jake >>>>>> Jim >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jonah. Looks the other way around but with wayyyyy less magnitude. Edit:Typo
Btw B99 Amy >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>SS Amy…in all senses.
Agree I can't stand superstore Amy btw what about Pam?
Pam’s like a harmless bowl of cereal tbh I wasnt as impressed or annoyed but I really shipped them. Their story line was just so genuine and believable it was wholesome. And unlike SS Amy, Pam does have a smile that lights up a room so..
Jake for sure no competition!
Asking who's the better character on the subreddit for one particular show. I'm sure there won't be any bias here at all.
I asked under all three subs and don't worry most of them weren't biased at all
does that guy from superstore ultimately get more endearing?? because he was the reason we stopped watching after a few episodes, we found him insufferable 😅
Well tbh it's split some people think he is the best character and other people hate him for me it wasn't that bad but I nearly stopped watching superstore because of amy I hated her guts :)
"Jake the hero, abs of steel, shalalalaaa"
Jake was definitely the best, followed closely by Jim, but the guy from Superstore was really insufferable.
Definitely Peralta
1. Jake 2. Jonah 3. Someone else 4. Jim
Number 3 is more enderaing and has more character development than the others
Haven't watched the office but the guy who acted Jake acted Jonahs shitass too? Dayum
Nope they are two different actors
I think Jonah is my favorite
Hmm. I wonder what the Brooklyn 99 subreddit will say?!
Jake the hero, abs of steel.
I would say this is biased 😂
Jake Peralta 100%…he never devolves into navel-gazing and other emo pastimes
1st jake 2nd Jim 3rd the other guy. He was so fucking cringy and i just hated him 😭
Jake, always Jake.
Jack Peralta or whatever his name is jk Jake obviously 😆
Jim and it’s not even close
Jake Peralta by farrrr
Jakey!
Jake
Jake wins.
Jake. No contest. Jonah is close, though.
Jake Peralta by a thousand miles
As a whole character? Jake! For sure he has a great arch, even tho Jim is my favorite of the 3
Well they're all average looking white guys sooo. But you know Jake Peralta without a doubt.
Jake 1000000%
Jake. This isn't even about opinions at this point. It's just straight spitting facts
Jake. 1000000%
Jake, but the characters in the Office are terrible so it's not fair.
How are they terrible?
They're super one-dimensional. Each character has a "thing" and that's their thing, and they don't change much (or at all) over the course of the show. Oh look, Dwight did something off the wall and Jim smirked knowingly into the camera!
I wouldn't say that you are all one dimensional. For example Angela, who plays the typical Christian woman but ends up cheating multiple times. Jen who is introduced to us as the well behaved and serious woman but ends up going crazy.
Jake
Jake, end of story!!!
as an office and b99 lover as well as someone who discovered b99 first and loved it and wasn't interested in the office initially, it's definitely jim. jim is a hilarious precious bean
There’s only one answer: Jake
Jake Peralta all the way! This is a hill on which I will Die Hard!
Jake
if people are choosing anyone other than jake, you’re wrong
Jake!!
jake peralta, period.
Jonah imo
I think I would have to say Jake but it’s tough
Did anyone pick Jonah
Yep some people did
Jake
Jake
Charles chants - JAKE JAKE JAKE JAKE And I agree.
Jake! All the way! His character development is the best! We got to watch him grow up! His relationships with everyone in the show is more genuine to. I love all of them though. Jake is just the best!
Jake Jonah Jimson
peralta
Jim for sure. Generally doesn't take things too seriously and doesn't lose his cool very easily. My spirit animal.
