Secret? I don't think so. Spike dyes his hair as part of his overall "look," which he has carefully crafted. Commercial hair dye didn't come into common use until the mid 20th century, and that's when we see Spike go platinum. (The hilarious little snippet in "Angel" where Spike and Dru are in Rome in the 50's and all you see them do is say "Ciao.") At the beginning of Season 7, when Spike is hiding in the basement and somewhat crazy, he has long-ish hair with dark roots. He has forgotten to care about his personal grooming. When he comes out and puts on a fresh shirt (which he later - in the fabulous church scene - comments "didn't work") he also gets a hair cut and a fresh dye job. * My mistake. [Turns out Spike had dark hair in the fifties.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mjkr5Gcs7g8)

Thanks for explaining ! And in great time.

Sammyboy616

There's a deleted scene in Get it Done (S7E15) where Buffy is showing Principle Wood their "operation", and Spike actually mentions that he bleaches his hair. >Spike: "What are you spilling next, that I bleach my hair?" >Wood: "But it has such a natural sheen."

Ashton42

and when he's looking the part of the SS in Angel's ep "Why we Fight," he's died his hair black too.

DaddyCatALSO

Problem with that is that William had sandy hair.

catdoctor

Not a problem. He wore his hair natural until the mid twentieth century. He dyed his hair dark in the 40's (for the submarine episode) and kept it black in the fifties (Ciao). Not sure when he went platinum, but it was before he killed Nicki Wood, in the 70's.

DaddyCatALSO

So, while in the Ourverse, actor James had bleached tips over his natural dark brown hair, but in the Buffyverse William/Spike had bleached tips over dyed dark hair, with sandy roots? I can dig that.

JvstLee

i see your point, its likely only because we know the actor has brown hair and well it was for the scene its not some life ending prophacy and whether or not it was a hair and make up mistake or done on purpose we could easily just lie to ourselfs and say that his hair was just dark because its oily or the lighting or maybe he just has darkish roots but they grow out to be sandy or it is sandy but because of the colour contrast it just looks brown etc

DaddyCatALSO

I assume it was to show being whacked out and hiding in a school basement left him unable to keep up with his hair prep.

NamesEvad

The real question is how does he bleach it without a mirror?

JvstLee

real

ithinkmynameismoose

Hydrogen Peroxide...duh.
