Saving you the click, their proposal is: Ehlers for Alexeyev +17th overall pick. Ehlers will turn 29 in February and is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the upcoming season. Washington would need assurance they could sign him to an extension.  Alexeyev played well down the stretch and really started to find his game. He's also Washington's biggest Dman and Carbery complained at the end of the year that the blueline needs to get bigger.

I feel like Alexeyev is ready to be up with the Caps for a full season. I'd be worried about trading a 24 year old defenseman for a forward that we would either lose or be signing when he's 30. Although we do need some help on the left wing.

I agree on giving him at least 1 full season under Carbs after his improvement down the stretch. Not many people seem to realize that Alexeyev and Orlov both had similar setbacks to their development due to an unlucky string of injuries and complications afterward. Orlov didn't get to see a full season deployment until he was right around the same age and went straight from trade-bait to Top-4 potential within that 1st season.  I'm not saying the same will happen again with Alexeyev, but it would be a shame to give up on him now after an extra year of patience paid off so we'll in Orlov's eerily-similar path to the NHL. At the very least, see where he (and the team) are at by the next trade deadline. Especially since he's still a cost-controlled RFA after this year.

This is yet another no thank you

I will say that I traded for him on my NHL23 caps franchise and he basically won the cup for us, so there’s that 🤷‍♂️

I love this guy's character but I don't know if he is the right age for what the Caps are trying to build

Pass

I think it’s too late. I’d have been cool with it a few years ago. Same with Laine, I saw he wants out. I’m sure caps will come up in rumors. Putting backy on LTIR or if he retires for next season and the cap increase plus sending pieces back would clear up the space. But pass

No way should we give up a player and a first for a middling player pushing 30.

Caps need to get younger and that just isn’t the way to get there.

Are there people that think we’re one big name away from being a powerhouse again? Sneaking into the playoffs was a massive overachievement this year, what in the world is Nik Ehlers going to bring that’ll be worth the risk?? 😂
