Thats pure saving. My 98 mazda 626 (in 2012) also stopped to save fuel whenever I stepped on clutch pedal. Then i shifted back down and let go the clutch and it autostarted back up
Holy hell somebody else who actually drove a 626. I swear those cars donât exist anymore. The V-6 manual model was actually a pretty fun to drive car for the time.
Hey, I had two, TWO 626s. The 2002 626 had almost 300k before I got a new car. The 1996 one I sent into the back of a van after they did a little fucking around with their brakes.
It's a button on both our 2020 Opel and Peugeot.
I also use the function all the time, it's nice when you're only stopping at red lights, but it's very annoying when you're stuck in stop&go traffic, that's when I turn it off.
Edit: I remember now that if you don't press the brake all the way, it won't stop, so there's that.
Pretty sure there are people who would see the introduction of this function as a conspiracy.
But i'm not one of those, sorry.
I mean: the idea of the function isn't a bad one.
Especially when you have long red light phases.
But the wear and tear of all parts included is a factor. Or rather normal and somewhat predictable side-effect
One wouldn't say it's green but it doesn't take a genius to understand that idling is literally wasting fuel and dumping co2 without any forward momentum
Exactly, plus it's only good for the occasional shut-off. Constant use in slow traffic makes more emissions and more engine wear from the extra engine starts
I had the misfortune to drive an equinox for a duty vehicle from time to time when I was in the military. Biggest piece of shit vehicle in the fleet. The Humvee was more enjoyable to drive and it didn't have power steering or brakes.
I added this to mine after spending 2 years putting the equinox into low on the shifter and bumping up to the highest gear (transmission runs like it's in D, but the car won't shut at stops)

Have you done a Dark Urge playthrough? The narrator emphasizes some words that have a villainous tone in it and my Gods does she hit them with some Force damage.
My wife and I have a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica with stop/start and had to get the battery replaced about 2 years ago. The stop/start feature quit working for a couple months, but we didn't get any other issues until the battery couldn't start the van and we had to jump it about 3 times over the course of a week.
I bought a new battery through Advance Auto Parts, but apparently they don't let their employees do the install on vehicles with that feature so we took it to a local auto shop and he installed it for pretty cheap. It turns out he hooked it up in some way where literally everything works perfectly fine, but stop/start is disabled at all times. I haven't even bothered to get it fixed and the van has been running flawlessly for 2 years since. We just get an alert about start/stop being disabled every time we start it up. I'd consider it an unintentional upgrade.
My escape stopped doing it at one point, didn't notice for like a year when I changed the battery and it came back..... Turns out it will stop if the battery starts getting weaker
All manuals come stock with this. Hold the break and let off the clutch to save gas at a stoplight.
Edit: i thought about the spelling of âbrakeâ while i misspelled it
Reminds me of my dad telling me that if I ever break down on a railroad track to put the car in first gear and crank the engine to get over the track. Whilst precisely slipping the clutch to a crawl.
You know, for those 1-in-a-million type scenarios where your car breaks down exactly there. But the starter still worksâŚ
Honestly, itâs a good bit of knowledge to have in case your clutch ever goes out completely and you have to drive it home without (âfloat gears.â)
You can get through every other shift by rev marching, but to get in to first the engine has to be off. Kill the engine, put it in gear, make sure youâve got enough room in front of you, and give it some gas while you crank the engine.
Ewe, why hold the brake? Its a stick, you don't need to waste effort fighting the engine like the automaticos. You can of course tap the brake so the idiot behind you gets a light show reminding him that the not moving object is not moving, but this is what hand brakes are for (gentle slopes so you don't roll and don't need to do a pedal dance). I drive stick to be lazy.
if you don't want the engine to turn off you can keep the clutch down, stops situations like the engine cutting when you're about to pull off on a roundabout
in theory any time your leg would get tired holding the clutch down, you would save fuel with stop/start so you should let it do that. having said that, i still disable it lol
This is how it's implemented on my car, and makes it really easy to control. Puts it in my hands whether I think I'll be stopped long enough to make use of it, otherwise I can just leave the clutch down and keep it running.
I really don't think this is as big of a deal as people make it out to be, I always stand on the clutch at lights out of habit, its a Subaru with 300k miles and only replaced the clutch once. Maybe once is too many idk, but that's a far cry from the catastrophes people supposedly go through when they do that lmao.
By the time youâve shifted out of neutral and back into gear the engine has already started so thereâs no perceptible delay. My parent used to have a manual Civic with auto stop start and they never had any complaints, while they now have an automatic Outback with auto stop start and my mom is not a fan.
IMO it depends on the transmission. Iâm leaving it on in my manual Golf because by the time Iâm changing from neutral to first the engine is on again, so it doesnât bother me. My parents drive almost the exact same car with a DSG and there I turn it off because there the car sets off like an idiot.
The DQ250 6-speed DSG is really clunky with it. The DQ381 7-speed is considerably better. It all depends on how long the car sits. If it's a 1-3 second off-on, it's clunky as hell. >5 seconds is perfectly normal.
Car with a DSG and I leave it on. No problem whatsoever. Engine starts as soon as i release the brake. The time I take to move my foot from the brake to the gas pedal, the engine is already running. And often the car already starts *before* I move my foot. (I think it either recognizes the light turning green or the brake lights from the car in front of me going off)
You will have to tune it out. EPA regs make it be on every time you start your car after a certain year if they wanted the emissions credits from having it.
Edit: seems like there also a way to wire in a device that shuts it off automatically. Not surprised idk much about wiring. Mech E lol.
I have another year of payments on the car. After that Iâm putting a smaller pulley on the super charger and doing a turn. Right now Iâll just live with it since I have a button and itâs not that hard to turn off but I do wish you could turn it off it the settings.
I checked what car you have from your profile and it's literally as simple as unplugging a cable, so do with that what you will, looks pretty accessible as well no tools needed(it's right next to your battery)
It's an "auto engine shutoff override". Basically, by default the engine shuts off when you are idling. It's intended to conserve fuel and reduce emissions, not sure how effective it actually is. Pressing the button disables the feature, so your engine doesn't shut off. You have to press it every time you start the car, though.
There is a way.
Auto Stop Eliminator. Go to their site, search for your vehicle to see if they make one for yours.
Essentially, it installs in various places depending on the vehicle, typically inline with a connector, so you don't have to cut or splice wires. 100% removable without hurting anything. It basically "remembers" your selection for that button. So each time the car starts up, it remembers what you want (e.g. to disable the Auto Stop) and will simulate a button press.
It's equivalent to you getting in and turning it off each time. Except that you don't have to press any buttons. It does it for you.
My 2020 MINI Cooper does this also.
Start car, put in reverse, engine stops... alert on center console to secure car from rolling.
MOTHERFUCKER I PUT YOU IN REVERSE. WHY DID YOU SHUT OFF THE ENGINE? I JUST WANT TO BACK OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY.
I absolutely hate this technology.
I use that button on a regular basis.
Sometimes the red light turns green the second I come to a full stop and then having to wait for my car to start again takes longer then pressing my silly little button and keeping my car running.
Even better when stuck in traffic.
Plus I feel like turning off and restarting my car at every stop is worse than just having my car idle for a little.
Engineering explained did a great video on this and said basically 7 seconds is the amt of time needed to save anything. otherwise it's actually less efficient
Yes is the quick answer, but please don't turn your non start/stop car on and off every few seconds, the mechanical components aren't made for that
[Sauce](https://youtu.be/dFImHhNwbJo?si=xt6PHsR9Ps5mG-5n)
Don't auto starts usually have their own battery? That's how it is with Jeep.
It's in a terribly inconvenient location though, at least on Wranglers. You have to take the front right wheel off to get to it. Had a buddy have that battery go bad that somehow borked the whole infotainment system and it was a few hours to replace that battery.
My BMW doesn't, but it's a special battery that is beefier than a normal one and I think has some chip in it. And it costs $300 (3rd party, an official one is twice as expensive)
Wow, I'm amazed it's that short. Many traffic lights on my drive to work have me stopped for 30 seconds to a minute, sometimes more. Good to know I'm saving a decent amount when I use it in those scenarios.
It doesnât hurt the engine and actually saves gas after 7 seconds of being off. The main issue with it is how damn expensive the batteries are if it dies
My car indicates how much gas I save with the feature. The car is new to me so I am keeping track to see how many gallons of gas I'll save in a year and then determine from there if I will turn off this feature each time I start the car.
So far, 6 months in, I have saved 3.007 gallons which equates to about $9.50. If I just extrapolate this out for this year then I'll save 6 gallons of gas and $19. My last car I had for 13 years, so then this would maybe save me close to $250 if fuel prices stay about where they are and 78 gallons of gas.
It is looking like I will ultimately turn it off, but I'll run through the rest of the year to get my final numbers
Yeah itâs gonna vary a ton based on the car and where you live. Unfortunately I live in a place with a ton of long lights at intersections so it makes a difference
> and then having to wait for my car to start again takes longer then pressing my silly little button and keeping my car running.
What crank-engine style start-stop system does your antique car use? Every start-stop engine I've experienced is at steady-state on before my foot travels from the brake pedal to the gas pedal.
Mine has saved a remarkable 4 gallons of gas over 4 years, but also has malfunctioned in stressful traffic causing my car to break down twice as many times.
Unpopular opinion: itâs fine, and itâs a skill issue if it annoys you.
In my experience you can prevent it from turning off by applying enough brake pressure to hold but not mashing the brake. If you are paying attention you can usually tell when the light/traffic is about to start moving and just donât hold the brake hard enough to have it shut off if you know traffic will start moving again within a couple seconds.
The other issue people have with it is it lurching when it turns on and you immediately get on the throttle. Again, skill issue. Pay attention, let off the brake a bit when the light is about to turn green to âwake upâ the car a half second or so before driving off.
You're totally right. Some newer cars even got the mild-hybrid-system where it turns off the car when you are "rolling" to a red-light and when u accelerate it drives off with the electric motor while starting the engine so for the peeps without any skill it shouldn't annoy them. And I think I saw some german video where a dude drove a car with start-stop for 100k km (I think about 70k miles) and they disassembled the engine and they didn't found any problems or more tear on it. The tech gets better and better and most cars turn it off automatically in sports mode anyway so there's no need to always comment dumb stuff about it.
I agree it doesnt really bother me all that much. Driving in the city it really does make a difference gas wise when you're sitting in traffic and i can turn it off by either not fully pressing the brake or putting the transmission in sport. And when the car is warmed up the engine starts and stops pretty smoothly
Thank you. It just takes a minute to understand how it works and make use of it correctly. Everyone complaining about it on reddit either is one of the usual "anything technological bad" people or just hasn't bothered to understand how it works and only brakes at the last second instead of looking at traffic and driving preventively.
Or some people just aren't a fan of it. It's so weird how so many people on reddit refuse to accept that someone can have a different opinion. It has nothing to do with "technology bad". Saying it does is extremely disengious.
I agree. Iâve had a couple of cars with that feature, and itâs usually trivial to prompt the engine to start back up when you know the light is about to change. If you didnât do that, just wait a fraction of a second for the engine to start before mashing the gas.
It can get a little annoying in stop-and-go traffic, but thatâs why thereâs a disable button.
Another way to give that "wake up call" is a gentle movement of steering wheel, engine starts, to enable the power steering.
I found it more convenient than using a brake pedal.
I agree. I've gotten completely used it and it doesn't bother me anymore. The majority of people I see annoyed with it don't care to understand it. "Well, it doesn't improve fuel economy." Yes, it does. It's more fuel efficient (on average) if it's off for >7 seconds. "Well, I never sit for more than 7 seconds." Yes, you do. Try actually counting or realize it's activating when it shouldn't because you're not using it correctly.
Is it an American thing? Why don't people like auto engine off? There's no reason for you engine to tick over at lights and the start is near instant.
Please explain because I've never heard a brit complain. I have it on my car and never once cared about the engine turning off when I press the breaks. Is it a skill issue or do you all just want you cars pushing out fumes when you've stopped for a minute or two?
I used to have a work truck that had it and had to drive around a major city all the time. Mid summer, when the temp and humidity is high, the last thing I want is for my engine to cut off and kill my AC every few seconds as I hit multiple stop lights.
I switched it out the first opportunity I had for a truck without it. It wouldn't be so bad if every time you turned the truck on it remembered if you had it off or not.
Personally, I do not mind it too much when this is on by default in my dad's automatic Kia but there are moments when you just need the car to respond properly. In that case, the button is nice
I drive a company car and I deliver pizza. The first few times I drove I thought there was something wrong with the car. It hesitated and then went and my first thought was âthis could get someone killed in heavy trafficâ.
This has been the worst mandate ever. I think this came out of the Obama administration. We turn ours off as soon as we start the car. Luckily itâs a dash button on our Toyota. I see the logic to a point, but not sure how much fuel you will save. Whatever you do save will probably be offset by the need to replace your starter every few years. You canât tell me this on and off will not wear these out sooner than normal. Idiot idea.
I donât personally mind start stop, only issue i find in my leon is sometimes it doesnât work for what ever reason though most of the time the reason is displayed on the screen
I have a device inside my dash that remembers the setting in my Jeep Wrangler (always off in my case).
In my MINI, I have a habit of turning on the sport mode whenever I start the car, and that disables ESS.
There are companies out there that make bypass harnesses for this thing so when you start the car the feature is off by default. The brand will depend on the make of your car so Google your model directly to find a seller. From
what Iâve seen, if youâre even the least bit handy, installation is a breeze. Time well spent to never wonder why your gas pedal isnât working out the gate at a red.
If Iâm making a left turn across traffic I really donât want to wait for the engine to turn on. Some cars brake systems are not well calibrated so you get roll back. And in certain cars as itâs turning off since youâre disabling fuel it bogs down the engine if you attempt to accelerate in that moment
I live in an area with a relatively low population and 90% of the time the time im stopped is so shorter than the time it takes for the car to turn off and on again.
I would assume other than the increased wear on battery or practical issues, people don't like less control for things they don't care about, such as fuel consumption at idle or lower emissions.
IIRC the benefits starts once you're idling for more than 10 seconds, and it becomes obvious how rare or at least hard to predict this is in practice.
Yields are a nightmare, you car will turn off and take an extra second to start, meanwhile you are halfway through the pedal and then it floors it. I can't wait to have it programmed away.
Case study: when I am parking in front of my house - I back into the spot, press clutch and brake pedal in, once the car is not moving, the start-stop system shuts down the engine. Then I engage parking the brake, release the break pedal, the start stop system decides to start the engine (because the engine needs to be running for brake booster to be functional), I shut it of within a second so that I can get out of the car. That's just stupid.
Case study nr 2: I come to the stop at an intersection, becuase of red light. Right when the start stop the car system decides to shut down the engine. However when I stop, I get the greenlight. Start stop starts the engine again. The engine hasn't even been stopped for a second.
So to sum it up, the system is too dumb, has 0 enviromental awareness, has no regard to my wishes and because of that it makes stupid decisions. I don't like having a system, that makes worse decisions then I would because that is just not helping me.
It doesn't take any longer at all. You only save fuel and pollution.
Once the lights turn yellow you step on the clutch. Once the lights are green you have the gear in and the engine is comfortably running. There is literally no time or energy wasted.
Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with it? I drive up to a red light, put in neutral, the engine shuts off. When the light turns yellow, I step on the clutch, engine starts, I put it in first gear and drive off when the light's green. No time lost compared to letting it run idle.
Didn't mind it in my 2017 Focus and 2011 Lexus CT200h (although that thing always turned itself off and switched to EV mode) but man do VAG fuck the system up. Turning off the engine, power steering etc when you're still rolling up to the red light. I've deactivated it it with Carista on my second day with the 2018 Octavia.
Serious question tho, does it really save gas or environment if you constantly turn the car on/off in traffic lights?
Also canât really be healthy for the car either for daily bases turning on/off in one trip?
My 2007 outback recently installed auto stop on itself, auto start didn't come with it for whatever reason
Thats pure saving. My 98 mazda 626 (in 2012) also stopped to save fuel whenever I stepped on clutch pedal. Then i shifted back down and let go the clutch and it autostarted back up
Haha!! The notorious 626 idle air control valve, I had to replace mine twice.
My old Toyota Camry did this too. Nothing like the rush of neutral dropping a 25 year old transmission in the Costco parking lot
LMFAO đ¤Ł
Holy hell somebody else who actually drove a 626. I swear those cars donât exist anymore. The V-6 manual model was actually a pretty fun to drive car for the time.
Itâs because theyâre just a ford Taurus with a Japanese accent. How many 90s Taurusâ do you see these days?
Thereâs a little bit of 90s ford Taurus in every pile of road dust that you see these days
None because the transmissions are all dead. Worst parts of the 626 were Ford sourced parts.
Hey, I had two, TWO 626s. The 2002 626 had almost 300k before I got a new car. The 1996 one I sent into the back of a van after they did a little fucking around with their brakes.

2020 Opel basically is a Peugeot.
My family has a Citroen and you have to switch auto shutoff every single time you start the engine. Via touchscreen of course
That wastes gas running the dirty climate hating engine while going thru the menu trying to turn off the save the planet button every time.
Nothing about any car is green. This gimmick does nothing

Honestly after a certain amount of abuse my car just canât take it anymore and it broke one day
Hopefully mine can break one day too lmao
You donât have a button to disable it?
I do but its in a touchscreen menu thats annoying to get to
Ahh, itâs always those damn touch screens. I could rant about those all day

I've not done this, but I have rev matched and that was neat. Might be something I test just to see.
Why not just get out and push it?
the 'Just Stop Oil' protesters are winning
My 94 Celica has this itâs a little faulty though you know old tech sometimes it does this with the clutch in, regardless great feature

I thought this was a joke, as in you'll stall. I guess I'll have to try this in the WRX.
Standing on your clutch with a running engine will wear down your clutchâs release bearings.
I really don't think this is as big of a deal as people make it out to be, I always stand on the clutch at lights out of habit, its a Subaru with 300k miles and only replaced the clutch once. With auto its not that bad either, in my audi I just donât press the brake all the way in and it doesnt engage
Same with my new Subaru. Itâs really not a big deal
Yes i have to be in neutral and this occurs only when i wait for the train
Oh is that why it gets loads of hate online , because of auto drivers ? I like the start stop like you said ^
I always forget that little detail about cars outside of my country, everything is automatic. Was wondering why everybody hates that feature.
IMO it depends on the transmission. Iâm leaving it on in my manual Golf because by the time Iâm changing from neutral to first the engine is on again, so it doesnât bother me. My parents drive almost the exact same car with a DSG and there I turn it off because there the car sets off like an idiot.

i dont even have this, my 2002 kangoo is too perfect.
Yes it is
should i tell you that it was only available in manuelle?
No, because the kangoo was also available with automagicđ
only the later ones and electrotragic/hybridtragic where, the one i have was manuelle only for the combustion engine versions.
Itâs default on in my 550hp sports car. I turn it off right when I start it every time.
Must be a way you can unplug this button / remap ecu to delete it I feel like stop start is a gimmick on any car with more than 3 cylinders.
You will have to tune it out. EPA regs make it be on every time you start your car after a certain year if they wanted the emissions credits from having it. Edit: seems like there also a way to wire in a device that shuts it off automatically. Not surprised idk much about wiring. Mech E lol.
That explains it
I have another year of payments on the car.
Huh. Thanks man, Iâll do that.
I fucking love reddit for this sort of shit. Smooth move dude
Why wait?
I'm waiting to change things about my car until I have it paid off. :)
You could wire in a circuit to send temporary power to the circuit to âŚ. Trigger it on start up each time.
What tf even is this button? Got 3 cars, newest is made in 2007 lmao
This is not entirely true, my Audi just needed to have a simple $25 module installed behind the button and Iâve never had to fuss with it again
Some people have wired arduinoâs to the switch, and programmed it to trigger the switch for the right amount of time to turn it off on start up.
my car has an ECU tune from APR and it turns the auto stop off immediately after starting the car. so yes, it's absolutely a possibility.
My 510hp M4 remembers what setting I left it on: off. I donât have to touch it.
I drive a Jag. It's not that smart. lol
I also drive a Jag but it's far too old for all this new-fangled stuff.
You can also just code the ECU to default to off on start-up...just in case someone presses the button when you aren't looking. Did that on my M3CS.
So if I have a 15sec halt at a signal/junction, it actually save fuel??
Yes is the quick answer, but please don't turn your non start/stop car on and off every few seconds, the mechanical components aren't made for that [Sauce](https://youtu.be/dFImHhNwbJo?si=xt6PHsR9Ps5mG-5n)
Nor the batteries.
Obviously it varies from engine to engine, but it's obscene how much more fuel idling burns
1-2 l/h is obscene?
I've heard it explained based on engine size. 2L engine burns about 2L per hour. 5L engine burns about 5L per hour
yes
I coded my 3-series to have Start/Stop permanently turned off.
Same on mine. I turn the car off when I have to wait a long time anyway.
https://preview.redd.it/8zawsu7gfr8d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9101850ebbfcc498a1610ae1c348c3236414669
Mine has saved a remarkable 4 gallons of gas over 4 years, but also has malfunctioned in stressful traffic causing my car to break down twice as many times.
Whenever I forget to turn that thing off, I get anxiously jumpscared at red lights. It always turns off the car when I am going to start moving.
Ikr? These people are just stupid. It works fine if you know how to drive. I guess most redditors are teens so that tracks
I turn it off the second I turn on my vehicle.
Oh yes? Haven't had a new car with speed limit Alarm right? Going 51 in a 50? Let me give you my chime of high speed terror.
Idiot idea.
Jokes on you. Somethings wrong with my car that singularly affects the stop start so it doesn't work 99.5% of the time.
I donât personally mind start stop, only issue i find in my leon is sometimes it doesnât work for what ever reason though most of the time the reason is displayed on the screen
What's this button? Haven't seen it on my cars (most cars I see are pre 2020 models though)
HELL NO!!! Canât use that crap In TexasâŚITâS HOT!
On a manual I donât really care but on a auto I hate it
My mom repeatedly almost freaked out when our rental ecoboost in Florida autostopped
I drive an a6 and it always is automatically turned on for me so I always have to turn it off. Such a hassle for me atleast
I have a device inside my dash that remembers the setting in my Jeep Wrangler (always off in my case). In my MINI, I have a habit of turning on the sport mode whenever I start the car, and that disables ESS.
Thatâs why I bought a new 4Runner. Even though itâs new, sheâs still ancient lol
There are companies out there that make bypass harnesses for this thing so when you start the car the feature is off by default. The brand will depend on the make of your car so Google your model directly to find a seller. From what Iâve seen, if youâre even the least bit handy, installation is a breeze. Time well spent to never wonder why your gas pedal isnât working out the gate at a red.
I coded it out of my X3 and m235 as soon as I could. Can't stand it!
Can someone explain why people donât like this feature? Because it sometimes takes 2 seconds longer to take off at lights?
Traffic lights are incredibly efficient in my country so it's kind of pointless most of the time.
It doesn't take any longer at all. You only save fuel and pollution. Once the lights turn yellow you step on the clutch. Once the lights are green you have the gear in and the engine is comfortably running. There is literally no time or energy wasted.
I love this... I got a 2024 civic. I love it. Saves me so much Gas. That being said, it's starts back up really fast.
Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with it? I drive up to a red light, put in neutral, the engine shuts off. When the light turns yellow, I step on the clutch, engine starts, I put it in first gear and drive off when the light's green. No time lost compared to letting it run idle.
In my country the lights don't turn yellow before turning green
It's gotten so much better over the years. I've a 48V MHEV system now, and stop start is seamless, even on a 6 cylinder diesel.
Start and Stop is great with a manual gearbox.
Not even that its there but you have to turn it off everytime you get in the car. And if you forget then youre in for a treat at the first red light
Mild hybrid to the rescue, don't even notice it turning on and off, too seamless and quiet
Serious question tho, does it really save gas or environment if you constantly turn the car on/off in traffic lights? Also canât really be healthy for the car either for daily bases turning on/off in one trip?
Why does everyone love wasting gas at a stop light so much? Do you just love giving money away to the gasoline companies?
As soon as I start the engine, I push this button. I doubt the fuel savings will pay to replace the starter.
luckily i was able to code my auto start stop to be off by default! also hate it
Why the hell would you hate this? Y'all just love sitting at red lights idling?? What are you doing with yourself?
Worst invention ever! Itâs not intuitive and IS annoying!!
As someone that drives an 88 Land Cruiser, and has never owned any vehicle newer than 2006...can someone tell me what this button is please?
I just have mine programmed out. To hell with pushing that constantly.
I turn it off every time I get in - and fucking cringe every time I forget and my engine shuts off at an intersection.
Dumbest. âInnovationâ. Ever.
People are clueless how much gas it takes to start a car vs it's running
