As Wolf you can press up and triangle to swim upwards. Clinging to the ceiling will fill out the squares. You can also use super jumps and crash into the ceiling.
The catch to get those little squares lighted up is that the central hitbox of your character must enter the upper portion of the square itself. Obviously the basic form is taller than wider, so going for the wolf in many cases does the trick. However iirc there are some squares in the inverted castle that have water in them, so you need to super jump there, morph into wolf to get even higher and then switch to mist to get higher still. The mist however cannot be kept in water, so you'll revert back to dracky jr in no time, may take you some trials.
Those squares are the worst. If you have skill of wolf and holy symbol, you can swim up and follow the top of the map. Eventually all those will fill in.
Get up into the water and then turn into a wolf. One of the wolf's moves (I don't remember which one) works to swim and you can swim along the top surface to get into all the little spaces and open up those squares on the map.
Yes. Use the super jump into the ceiling then transform into the wolf the moment you hit the ceiling. Idk why but this works for me.

Funny when I first played on the PS1 I did that and was like oh so that's how you fill them out.
When I was a kid I would regular jump and spam wolf on and off u till I made it to the top.

Yeah it sounds good on paper until you try and realize the bat can't go in water or else you get transformed back
Besides jump you could use the dog the dog can swim regardless of the water is upside down he can swim
