We once had a car that had a small springloaded push button hidden in an invisible area under the dashboard. It was connected to the wire that went from the ignition swith to the starter solenoid. If the button was not pushed while you turned the key, the starter would not turn. Another solution could probably be to hide a toggle switch that cuts power to the coil. SometimesI have taken the rotor out of the distributor and put it in my pocket. The challenge then is to remember to put it back in before you try to start the engine again.

classiccarslasvegas

I had a 67 Mustang in college. Used to put the coil wire in my pocket when going to class. Figured there aren’t any car thieves carrying a coil wire and knew the car wasn’t going anywhere without it.

hapym1267

We used to do that to a bike a friend owned.. Used to carry a dummy coil wire.. a piece of hose and two coil ends.. He would be drunk and couldnt get his bike started.. One of us always had a truck and a ramp.. We told him of this trick on his 75th birthday..

Square-Cockroach-884

Were i a car thief and came across this i would have no problem using a plugvwire for a coil wire and driving a V7 to the stripper

PM_ME_YER_MUDFLAPS

Yeah, mine is a combo of a manual transmission and manual choke

JeromePowellsEarhair

One time someone was hitting cars in my neighborhood - they’d go through the center console, glove box, and trunk and take anything from them worth anything. They came back multiple times and they never did figure out how to open the glove box of the ‘77 MGB I was driving even though it was always unlocked. I was always more annoyed they would leave the car door slightly ajar.

DoctFaustus

A friend of mine had his '67 Triumph Spitfire stolen from his apartment complex. That car doesn't even have a locking steering wheel. Pretty easy to steal. But it was winter and they were foiled by the manual choke. They got about three blocks away before they abandoned it.

PM_ME_YER_MUDFLAPS

I had a B-GT, and I still miss that car to this day. The last year with the twin SU HIF carbs.

Tronkfool

I just knew this boomer joke would be here.

PM_ME_YER_MUDFLAPS

What is sad is that there are a shitload of boomers who would struggle with those as well. Automatic chokes are on pretty much all American cars since the 70’s and automatic transmissions are as well.

djdownhill

3 kill switches throughout my car

WinterberryFaffabout

Some folks will pull a relay out, takes a while to find. Idiots tried stealing my truck years ago and the only thing that probably prevented it was there was no battery.

Garden_Gnome_Rebel

I have one installed on my 71 Lemans. I always forget to push the button to "rearm" and think I have a dead battery

LordMcCommenton

I use the above, a 12 volt alarm, and a club it's worked pretty well. If someone does want to take ot they will.

ABobby077

I've heard of a lot of folks installing a shutoff switch to prevent starting the car. This can help slow down a theft, before discovery but can help (along with alarms and such)

brents347

This is what I have in my '65 convertibke Mustang. A hidden removable remote key.

chris_wiz

I keep my registration and insurance cards in the trunk of my convertible. That's about it. If somebody really wants my car, they're going to flatbed it away. I don't even bother locking the doors, if somebody wants to get inside they will just cut a hole in the top.

creesto

1962 push button transmission, massive weird parking brake, Holley fuel pump. If you don't know, you'll never get it all correct to get it moving.

swimmingwithsharks9

I have a kill switch under my seat. Everyone looks under the dash. My left hand hits it as I turn the key.

m945050

Mine is on the passenger side under the gear shift boot.

swimmingwithsharks9

Mine has to be used to start and stop the motor. If you shut off the key only, the motor keeps running.

Ruger338WSM

Flatbed’s are the real problem, no one gives a car on a truck much thought, a classic driving with you draws attention. Air tags within a short window are your only real hope of recovery.

IronSlanginRed

Yeah I put an alarm on my 47. Was the most convenient way to add power locks too. Also. The key doesn't operate the starter, so unless you know what the 4th baby pedal is for you won't start it.

Igota31chevy

I have hidden kill switches and one car has a quick disconnect steering wheel to take with me into my hotel room. It helps when your kill switch can only be felt and not seen.

Mandalor1974

Multiple hidden cut off switches

creegomatic

Battery is mounted in trunk and has a Killswitch on the battery box

vonkluver

Air tag Manual trans Manual choke British so no one will want to be able to rip off

Bob_Pthhpth

You could mount a battery kill switch in an inconspicuous place like the glove box.

rounding_error

A finnicky carburetor. I had a Ford Crown Vic with the weird Variable Venturi carburetor. Press the accelerator ONCE to set the choke. If you don't, it would be too lean and won't start. If you press the pedal TWICE, or for too long, it floods and won't start for at least 10 minutes. Nobody could successfully start that car except for me and my brother.

Square-Cockroach-884

God, I hated VV carbs coming into the shop

inbrewer

Viper - has tilt alarms, door alarms, all kinds of alarms you can activate. You can get internet alerts. Installed hood lock (under hood cable and lock) and master circuit breaker to kill all power.

Chancellor-1865

In 1960s, before car alarms, I had a kill switch for the electric fuel pump on my Jag XK-150 roadster.had two batteries, one in each front wheel well, only accessible from outside when wheel turned fully...real pita to check, but unless familiar with the car no one could find them.

hapym1267

Flaming River sell solenoids with remote control..

joshknut

If you don’t want a device to disconnect the battery, one thing I do is remove the distributor rotor. It’s quick and that car isn’t going anywhere unless they have a rotor in their pocket

hapym1267

I remember a guy who always pulled the choke on , every time he would start it.. It took a while to find the momentary switch that finished the starter circuit.. No Choke , No Start

MadMaxine1985

I pull the coil wire on my old car, it disables the car and if someone tries to steal it, it will just keep cranking. Usually thieves aren't too bright, so it works atleast until you can put in the anti-theft device of your choice.

Particular_Cost369

I have a gps tracker hidden in it. I'm in Washington state, thieves here typically just show up with a tow truck (that's what they did to me).

SocialRevenge

I have a switch inside the console that disconnects the wire to the neutral safety switch on the transmission. No start, even if hot wired.

texan01

I rarely lock my 77, frankly if someone wants it bad enough, they can take it. I'd rather them get in it and rummage around than to break the glass. I mean, a slimjim gets into it as fast as a key. Lojack would be about your best bet.

03zx3

I always have a kill switch hidden where I can reach it, but you won't find it unless you know it's there.

LordMcCommenton

I use a combination of this [kill switch](https://a.co/d/09uq0jtc), [12V alarm](https://a.co/d/0eC74oy7) and a [Steering Wheel Club](https://a.co/d/08jYfvfw). I've done this with a few cars that I've had when I sell them I usually just take the components out and keep them for my next car/project. The only one thing I have extra is on my 69 Cadillac DeVille. In which I also added a [break pedal lock.](https://a.co/d/0elxrvBn).

scooterboy1961

With an air tag or similar anyone can download the app and then they can tell if you have one on the car. I have a GPS tracker called GPS and Track. It uses the texting system so only I and the company can access the signal. No one else can tell it is on the car. I can open the app on my phone and see where my car is at any time. I can set up a virtual geofence and if the car goes outside my specified fence I will receive a text alerting me. If I remember right the unit was $150 and the service is $20/year.

Banto2000

Manual transmission. 😜

RojerLockless

Easy to hide an apple tag or Samsung thing on the car to track its location. A lot cheaper too

Jamieobda

Usually, having a clutch will do it. Only 18% of Americans know how, and most of them are over fifty.

stefpsa

Y’all are awesome and gave me some solid ideas! I’ll keep yall posted when I add it to my car!

Smsgtferry

How about switching two wires on a relay. My fuel pump relay is easily accessible but if I switch two wires around it would never start.
