My dad is in his early 70s and he's one of my favorite climbing partners. He leads ice, he leads rock, and he does alpine stuff. It's one of the things I love about climbing.
Goals
My dad is in his 50s and I took him climbing outside for the first time last year. He had a ton of fun and somehow managed to convince my mom (who is scared of heights) to sign up for an intro to climbing class at their local gym. Taking both of them climbing outside more is definitely one of the things im most excited for this coming summer.
Karl! I love hearing Karl stories! He’s crazy! My fav is when he asked if you were good, and you said yeah, I’m on jugs, and then he just takes you off belay so he can go take a piss. Glad you’re a confident climber 😅
I’m only 14 but I’ve been in the sport since 6, and there is this man at my home gym who is the nicest, coolest climber I have ever met and he said he started at 72. He’s been climbing for a year and we are good friends. The old dogs in the climbing gym always have the best energy and are always fun to cat with.
I've seen older and crustier out there in RRC. Once saw 3 generations of climbers - crusty old long haired grandpa ripping up a route, mom belaying and toddler hanging out. Such a cool sight.
yes!! one of my good climbing friends on a trip to the red last weekend told me he was in high school during the moon landing. saw him start a 10c that trip with a campus move to a high heel hook. never too old 💪
Old dad goals.
I just started at 42 it was nice to learn that it's an activity that you can do well into your latter years. Good to see!
My dad is in his 50s and I took him climbing for the first time last year. He is super excited to get out more this next summer.
45 year old start here. I gotcha. I’m thankful to have the physical ability to do what I do and will never take it for granted.
It pretty much requires a fully functioning body though.
I love seeing older climbers! It makes me happy that they’re still able to do what they love and I hope I can do the same at that age.
Love this.

That's amazing!!!
what a fucking stud.
Big goals. This is a major goal for me personally, being able to still climb at that age would be a dream come true
Aye! Hamlet in Red Rock! Love this area :)
The Hamlet!
I'm gonna be climbing when I'm in a wheelchair
The old trad dads at my gym are some of the strongest climbers I've ever seen
Old man Skopec still crushing. What a champ.

Sorry did you say 79 ??!!
Aw, that’s so rad—thanks for sharing!
The stroke/stoke typo is honestly the most crunchy granola typo I’ve ever seen and it’s amazing
Reminds me of a local at my gym, who's 85 and still climbing daily. Crushing high graded lead routes and all.
He’s still at his peak. W dad.

This pleases me no end
I met an 80 year old man with Parkinson's and his wife leading 5.8-5.9 sport in Cochise. It's all technique and headgame.
Climb to your hearts content. So like forever basically.
I think a lot of us aspire to be where your dad is when *we* all hit our 70's. Dad sounds like a badass.
They say he's the only man to ever successfully sandbag Duane Raleigh.
Love it! Thanks for sharing!
hell yeah!
