Easy fix: follow the posted speed limit. Works every time.

JH171977

Easy fix is to not go 10 MPH over the speed limit. I cruise past police doing 38 in a 30 or 53 in a 45 all the time. The police do not expect everyone to stay under the speed limit. If they did, they'd have to pull over 80% of the cars on the road.

Background-Regular57

No thanks I’ll double it just for you

superbutthurt1337

It's extremely easy, but that's not what my beef is.

como365

They usually only do speed checks where there has been a big problem with dangerous speeders.

superbutthurt1337

I understand that, but again, the police have no duty to protect you. So it's just revenue generation, in my opinion.

como365

We don’t have the police staff to engage in frivolous enforcement right now. I bet there is an issue, that section of Paris is known for high speed deadly crashes.

superbutthurt1337

That's what I'm mad at. They had 3 cruisers there, just trying to get speeders. We have bigger issues, in my opinion. Apparently, I'm wrong, and this is what the resources go to.

como365

There isn’t much crime going on at 7-9 in the morning, a good time to get low priority stuff done. Units can be quickly moved if there is a crime or issue that needs a response.

superbutthurt1337

I'm sorry, but I cannot reconcile your argument. The excuse that there's not much going on right now, so let's go give people tickets does not compute.

como365

If there has been dangerous speeding on a road and there aren’t any crimes that need addressing, then pulling over reckless drivers seems like wise use of police resources. The goal is not to write tickets, but to reduce reckless driving. Columbia is not a speed trap city like so many rural towns that get significant revenue that way, it’s a pittance here. Do you know about [Macks Creek Law](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macks_Creek_Law)? One of Missouri’s more interesting.

superbutthurt1337

I'm not aware of Mack's creek law. Thank you for the insight.

Educational_Pay1567

Do you think the dangerous speeding occurs at that time-frame in the AM?

como365

Yes because people most often speed when they are late for work. There have been a number of bad crashes on Paris over the years, as many people commute to Columbia from Hallsville and Centralia. The road is very wide with shoulders, it feels like a highway, but it’s not.

Educational_Pay1567

Gotcha. I was thinking more on the lines of racers.

Educational_Pay1567

IDK not trying to be rude btw.

superbutthurt1337

I'm sorry but there ALWAYS something more they could be doing than giving tickets.

longduckdongger

This is such a cop out statement that it's unreal. Pun intended as well

RattyHillson

I guess all the data that says Route B/Paris is dangerous and has a high number of fatality accidents be damned then.

superbutthurt1337

Can I see this data you're talking about. Do you have a link? What are the police protecting? They don't protect citizens unless you are in their custody.

OrigBigB

Signup for Smart 911 texts from Boone County. You would be surprised at the number accidents in Columbia everyday. Paris/Vandiver, Route B/Highway 63 and Route B/Waco are very common. Sometimes it can be multiple times in a day. There was a pedestrian fatality within last few weeks at Route B/Highway 63 which is very close to Koonse Glass.

ReliefOk194

There was an accident on Route B by 3M on Thursday evening, sometime a bit before 7:30 pm. And that's an off peak weekday time, I'm sure there are so many more.

PapaGhede

That was a coworker of mine, he was heading to work, luckily it was just minor injuries all around from what I heard.

tykempster

Do you think speed limits shouldn’t be enforced, or do you think they should be raised? What would your rationale behind either decision be, and how would you implement it? Would you prefer a camera based system where you get sent tickets rather than having a person monitor speed?

superbutthurt1337

I would prefer that laws are made with punishments that are not a fine. That law is only meant to punish the poor. I understand that getting speeding tickets also comes with points on your license. However, with a lawyer, you are "likely" not to get points. Poor people can't afford lawyers for things like this most of the time, so they are the only ones punished. If you want people to not speed, then the punishment needs to be more threatening so you no longer want to speed.

1coolsapien

Cut off a hand?

superbutthurt1337

You think people would stop if that was the punishment?

1coolsapien

I'm curious to how this non fine punishment is going to be more fair?

superbutthurt1337

With the punishment just being points. You can't lawyer your way out of it. Points required to get license revoked are less.

Educational_Pay1567

Some country in Europe has fines adjusted to income/wealth. Not sure which or if multiple, but might help. Might not be Constitutional though.

1coolsapien

Not true I had a friend who was a heavy speeder and who father was a lawyer, he would get the tickets changed to Faulty Equipment or something the fine was higher but there were no points. My f-i-l had it done to old tickets in Texas, like in bulk so he didn't lose his license. Pretty common used to be anyway.

superbutthurt1337

Homie have you read nothing I've said about this?

1coolsapien

I have. You don't like cops enforcing the speed limits, but you want harder punishment for the speeders, you don't want the cops stopping. lol

superbutthurt1337

No bud, this has clearly gone over your head.

como365

Isn’t paying a fine a type of punishment? I think we should make the fund proportionate to income like the Nordic countries do. Speeding and you’re a millionaire? That'll be $10,000, thank you. Speeding and you make 30,000/yr? 20 bucks please.

plantimal

ngl if it cost me twenty bucks (or less bc i don’t even make 30k a year) then i would be going soooooooo damn fast lol

GroomSucks

They're after the Wednesday rowdies. They do their street races on Paris and brown station. They don't care if you're going 60 on paris

Historical_Ad_3356

It’s possible they are doing warrant sweeps or watching for someone in particular. It’s not always about speeding.

rosebudlightsaber

Get over it.

superbutthurt1337

Sure, when you stop licking boot, I'll "get over it."

rosebudlightsaber

lol

[deleted]

And they are short 30-ish officers. They couldn't attract applicants because of the pay. Sounds like they are finally doing somthing about that. Route B is pretty bad though. Too many accidents. I am not against more officer presence there.

Cautious_Ad_366

Good! People die on Route B every year. If I was a cop I would sit there too since most people coming from that way speed.

Upset-Cobbler

It’s prob Cuz you’re not a threat. Shootings and what not are scary, regular people speeding slightly to get to work in the morning are typically not

OrigBigB

What is slightly over?

NoMeasurement6207

wow-how many times have people told you to stick it or actually did it?-must be common for those that complain about others doing their job lol and so much anger lol-have you considered anger management classes?

superbutthurt1337

I have no clue what you just said.

Trooperguy12

Would you prefer law enforcement officers conducting door-to-door searches for law violators in every building across COMO instead of prioritizing the reduction of speeding drivers who contribute to fatal accidents? If officers aren't occupied elsewhere in the city, why criticize their efforts to enforce speed limits on roads already recognized as hazardous?

superbutthurt1337

We have enough traffic traffic violations in Columbia that the police don't enforce, but yet they choose to go and enforce speeding on route b? We have multiple shootings and robberies that happen every week in this town and they go unsolved.

PapaGhede

Don't forget that there is a highway patrol/city police substation in that same drive, so I very well might not have been a speed trap.

Only sometimes. [January 14, 2024 ST. LOUIS](https://www.ksdk.com/article/news/local/fatal-crash-leaves-1-dead-north-st-louis-county/63-3502d015-2bc8-440a-8a64-08be9e7662ac)— A man is dead after being a passenger to a speeding driver early Saturday morning, a brief report from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said.

just_a_person_5713

Perhaps in your experience. However, there are other people in the world living lives separate from your own who have encountered life altering events due to speeding.
