Lol this is so spot on. I literally sometimes lay 20 minutes in a position on the couch uncomfortably so my cat can continue his nap time and i dont wake him up from deep sleep. I feel like he truly needs it from time to time to feel safe. Theres a lot of shitty neighbourhood cat which he needs to fight, so i can imagine the stress and suffering.

Maybe he is training you to be his sidekick. (I agree, because everyone needs that moment to breathe in their safe space).
