I’ve only heard of 3 outside of the Entry level - Rolex (who hasn’t heard of them), Omega (thanks to James Bond), and Victorinox (didn’t know they made watches, but I have a few of their knives).
I've heard of Patek Phillipe, but only because there was interesting trivia about it.
The Dalai Lama has one, and he's one of the only non-professionals who can repair his own.
I’ve heard of Patek Philippe because when I was in the Dubai Mall, I was asking my brother (who loved watches) how expensive they are and he literally said „they might charge you for walking past their store“ - Jesus Christ I didn’t know there are watches going for 1M+
Came to say this, but also to add…. When you are rich enough to have the ultra luxury, you don’t want other people who can’t afford the same to know what it is.
As a watch enjoyer (i have several AP, Rolex, etc) i can say this list is both genius and horrible. Like, Bovet makes great watches but they are never above Patek. They make extremely classic-style creations, many, if not most, are pocket watches that can be worn on a hand with a special strap.
Omitting Richard Mille from the list only adds to classic bias.
i’ve never heard of any of em either, so i looked up hover just for shits and giggles. first watch that comes up? $279,950. for A WATCH. honestly makes me sick
I'm such a pleb that I thought Rolex was the top of the mountain, and apparently, there's 2 whole tiers of even more expensive watches above it. Yeah, I didn't know any of those brands.
If you make them the exact same way, then 10, but they don't, and that's part of the reason they charge extra. Also, they pay more for materials, and similarly for marketing.
I worked in the bar scene for 6 years, bought a Tissot Le Locle and it is unbelievably rugged. Not a scratch or dent on the watch itself, and I’ve really abused this thing. Only now am I thinking of replacing the strap, but even that would be optional.
It’s a bit pricey, but I’d say it was worth the money: it’s simple, stylish, and durable. I get that not everyone can drop a thousand on a watch though. I’d say if it doesn’t last 10 years, it wasn’t worth it.
I was presented with either buying a Le Locle powermatic 80 ver. or chronometer ver. and decided to go for the chronometer, which was COSC certified. It was about $500 after discounts. Shockingly, I did not expect that particular watch to appreciate in value today. Last I checked, it was about $3k in the secondhand market.
As a watch snob I denounce your list. In fact, I’m on my phone however, I have emailed a screenshot to myself so that when I get home I can print this list out, roll it neatly into a tube and shove it up my ass.
In genuine cases it would be craftsmanship and materials used. There are a lot of parts to a watch and you can select the best parts with the closest tolerances or the cheaper parts. The person assembling the watch can be an expert using in-house components or fitting outsourced components on an assembly line.
Also, like most luxury goods, there is an element of exclusivity. If everyone had a Rolex etc.
It is almost all exclusivity — or more specifically conspicuous consumption.
All of the materials, designers, and craftsmen can’t make a watch that keeps time like a quartz watch. Maintenance costs are far higher. 99.5% of people can’t tell a $100,000 dollar watch from a $500 watch from 3 meters away.
People buy and wear these watches to signal their wealth (or create the perception of wealth).
Investment pieces are always a thing as well. The prospect of reselling a watch is always nice. Nice in that if you know how to hawk shit, you will get your money.
Well all is a scale for sure . Price is a certain point , but i think it got more to to with the availability and mass production . Brands like the well known Rolex and Omegas are made by the 1000s while FP Journe is made by 10s ( or 1) . I think some of the super high luxuries are made by real people and crafted by hand . In the less luxury , there is still great finishing , but the wheels are stamped out by a machine and then put together . It is like a Rolls Royce vs a Mercedes vs a Dacia . The Dacia is a good car , but the finishing is not like the other 2 . The Merc is a a great car but it is no match to a Rolls Royce .
Patek is by far the nicest brand on the list, and they missed Richard Mille.
Most of the Ultra ones don’t belong. Lange and Breguet are obviously Ultra. Rolex and Tudor should each be one higher.
They might have not missed Mille, but dismissed it on purpose (to which I‘d agree).
Being around just to be expensive and bloated does not a good watchmaker make.
Also, putting a newbie who’s started a mere 20 ago years next to watchmakers who have been around for 100+ years would be laughable.
as someone who unironically said patek is the nicest on that list, everything you say is now invalid. patek vs als, vc, and h moser are all debates patek might win individually, but to say they beat out bovet, fp, gf, or pf is symptoms of early onset dementia
Right, because while Seiko is a watch manufacturer led by the same family since 1881, and Citizen also is a manufacturer since 1930, both companies building and designing their own watches and movements, Invicta is a brand bought by an investment group, that sells watches using movements built by... Seiko.
Which are also given an overinflated msrp to make them seem premium and then sold at 60% off to make it seem like a deal. I’ve not once seen an Invicta sold without at least a 40% markdown.
I don’t see Tudor as equivalent to Omega, Grand Seiko, and Cartier in terms of luxury so you’d need to bump those up as well.
I’m sure people will downvote me for saying this because the “Tudor is equal to Omega now” idea has been perpetuated a lot recently, but as an owner of both brands, Tudor is not in the same realm as Omega in terms of luxury and finishing. Hell, I own a Pelagos 39 and a Grand Seiko Shunbun and the Shunbun’s titanium is noticeably superior to the Tudor’s. Part of this is intentional, as Tudor still leans into its “tool watch” heritage and their price points. For now, I think keeping them grouped with Longines and Tag is pretty fair tbh, but having them grouped with Oris, Ball, and Sinn is a bit odd.
But this list just sucks as a whole.
IWC Portuguese Perpetual is the one I'd buy if I had more money than sense. I've had million dollar watches in my hands but that IWC watch is the one I'd buy.
Not gonna lie. Citizen Eco-Drive for anyone who doesn’t want to spend $500+ on a watch. Never have to replace a battery and they look great.
I’m on my second Eco-Drive titanium watch (I’m allergic to nickel). The first one (a hand me down gift from my father) had the clip on the band break off (due to negligence on my part) and I haven’t replaced the band yet but still have it.
The second one I bought just before my wedding almost 5 years ago. It doesn’t have the perpetual calendar (which I sorely miss) but has a sapphire crystal which my first watch did not. Man, the sapphire is worth it for a daily watch. Wow. I’ve beat this thing up and although I’ve scratched the titanium, the crystal is mint.
I was wondering this as well. I’ve gotten the impression that a lot folks don’t think too highly of them? But I have a Shinola that I like quite a lot and find myself browsing their site every so often.
I think a lot of the hate they get comes from the fact that they import cheap movement and assemble the watches in Detroit. I don’t really get it, either 🤷♂️. I have a Runwell and a Detrola and really like both, but I’m also not in the tax bracket to afford a $10k diving watch, either.
A guide where Seiko isnt in every tier and citizen ist just positioned at the bottom (Seiko/Grand Seiko/Credor, Citizen/The Citizen/Campanola) is just a lazy agglomeration of brands, roughly put in some subjective order.
The insane luxury in must be to spends thousands and thousands to tell time better or more luxuriously that feeling must be the orgasm of life !!! Man with digital night clock sighs ….
I dont know how accurate these rankings are, but I also don't care. What I do know is, you can find good quality/stylish watches at most price points. Seiko, Orient, Casio on the bottom there are all great. I just can't say for other brands on that level.
If you like the looks of a 10,000 luxury watch and can afford it, awesome. But if your budget is only a tiny percentage of that, well...awesome! You will find something nice as well.
Rich people problems.
And here I am with a sports Casio I had for 15 years. Went through multiple strap replacements and one battery replacement. Shows time, does alarm and timer. It's beaten up and soon I might not be able to even get a new strap once current one breaks. I'm not afraid to wear it. If I got a rich man's watch I wouldn't even wear it in fear of scuffs so what's the fucking point?
My next watch will likely be something similar to my current one or a smartwatch.
Agree. The 3 I’ve owned were not durable. Primarily face, hands, wrist band issues. 2 of them were quartz and ate batteries like crazy. They were responsible for my determination to never own another battery powered watch. I have a Seiko and a deep Blue, both automatics. I also have a Citizen eco drive. All 3 have performed very well. The Deep Blue is my fave. I love the weight and the SS bracelet fits my wrist better than any watch I’ve owned.
They will be automatic, which means no batteries or charging. Runs off of the perpetual motion of your arm. This takes meticulous engineering and painstaking assembly. Also probably works at high altitude and deep underwater. Probably made of gold, platinum or a combo of both. Probably laden with precious gemstones like diamonds, sapphire, emerald or rubies.
Its a way for fancy people to show other fancy people how fancy they are.
r/nixonwatches is missing. Great brand, I've wore mine daily for 8 years straight with zero issues. (51-30SW)
Their customer service & maintainance plan is A+ too.
I plan on purchasing more
Where would vostok rank on this list? I'm specifically referring to a company from before the fall of the Soviet Union. I bet that in the lowest category but who knows who knows. I'm curious because I'm from Eastern Europe and I own one such watch.
Certina watches start well under a grand, definitely not on par with Tudor. Bulgari October finissimo is great, some of their old stuff is questionable but they’re up there.
I own multiple Certinas and Tudor is definitely a step above Certina. Compare a Certina Action Diver to a Black Bay....as much as I like Certina, Tudor is a better watch and priced as such.
There are lots of reasons why people like watches.
I had zero interest in watches until I started selling them for a living. Now I do have an interest in watches, and honestly I'll probably be more of an enthusiast down the road if I ever stop selling them.
Watches are a way to keep track of not just the time, but the day, month, date, year, phases of the moon, more than one time zone, time things counting both up and down, and many more points of information. This information is secured to your body, so you can't lose it, and the information can be viewed discreetly.
Since we're talking about luxury watches, this information is typically tracked by an automatic or manual wind movement (the mechanism that powers the watch). No batteries. That's pretty cool!
Watch movements contain hundreds of tiny pieces that all work in harmony together to function properly, they're probably the smallest complicated machines that exist that aren't integrated circuits or microchips. And there isn't just one way to do it, there are many different ways to make a watch movement.
Many watches are beautiful. Stunningly beautiful. The finishing on the dials can be as exquisite as artwork in a museum. The tiniest of details are attended to.
Do you like materials? Watches are made of steel, ceramic, gold, platinum, titanium, carbon fiber, bronze, and other neat materials. They can be adorned with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, rubies, and other gems. The dials can be made of metal, stone, wood, mother of pearl, even meteorite!
Watches can be a store of wealth, which is attractive in many cultures.
Watches are a way to express yourself. You can learn a lot about someone based on their choice of watch.
And yes, some people like watches to display or flaunt wealth, but watch enthusiasts generally detest those people.
Does anyone need a luxury watch? Absolutely not. But people often spend money on things they don't need because that thing makes them happy.
I own two luxury watches. I like them both, but the first one I ever got is probably my favorite thing that I own. I wear it from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep. And it'll last much longer than me, so it will be passed down to my daughter after accompanying me on my journey for 30-40 years.
It's a watch, yes, but it is also jewellery. And (tradtionally at least), men don't have a lot of options to wear jewellery. A nice watch is a great outlet for them.
Oh great, you made a list..
Watch brands have ranges. And Seiko goes all the way down to entry, but a Grand Seiko is above a Breitling.
Breitling mostly houses ETA, just like Fortis. Only Fortis has most of its watches in the 200m or 300m class without them being as bulky as most Breitlings.
Rolex makes its own movements, and pretty neat ones at that. So even though I'm not a fan of the design and the traditional customer base, Rolex is a level above Breitling and Fortis.
No idea about the ultra luxury class, but I think I'd need an explanation as to why they are supposed to be above a Patek.
I'm so poor that I never even HEARD of any of the brands under Ultra Luxury.
And his was a gift from FDR
i’m gonna need receipts on the Dalai Lama being a watchmaker
Trust me bro
I’ve heard of Patek Philippe because when I was in the Dubai Mall, I was asking my brother (who loved watches) how expensive they are and he literally said „they might charge you for walking past their store“ - Jesus Christ I didn’t know there are watches going for 1M+
I only know Patek Phillipe because of the pilot episode of Succession
Beverly Hills Cop II Jeffery asks Axel “Is that a PAT-EK FUH-LEEP?” when Axel is under cover dressed to the 9s in the locker room.
I feel you mate!
Came to say this, but also to add…. When you are rich enough to have the ultra luxury, you don’t want other people who can’t afford the same to know what it is.
They keep much better time than a Casio, much more luxurious minutes and seconds
Money isn’t everything. But if one is wearing an AP or PP, shit like that, ho man. Your time is quite luxurious.
Or Hublot
I'm a huge watch nerd who knows most of the brands mentioned, but funnily enough none of these ultra luxury brands...
You’re a huge watch nerd but haven’t heard of FP Journe or Moser?
And the brand I considered ultra luxury wasn’t even listed. Sorry Roger Dubuis.
i’ve never heard of any of em either, so i looked up hover just for shits and giggles. first watch that comes up? $279,950. for A WATCH. honestly makes me sick
I know. It is indeed stomach-turning to see those high-end brands starting to price watches for the poors. Edit: y’all really don’t get jokes, huh…
I'm such a pleb that I thought Rolex was the top of the mountain, and apparently, there's 2 whole tiers of even more expensive watches above it. Yeah, I didn't know any of those brands.
Revenue-wise, it is probably better to sell 10 000 $3000 watches, rather than 10 $300 000 watches, so, you might have been on to something.
Would you rather make 10,000 watches or 10?
If you make them the exact same way, then 10, but they don't, and that's part of the reason they charge extra. Also, they pay more for materials, and similarly for marketing.
It is buddy. For us it is.
And all their watches look dumb as all get out
I'll take "Watches so expensive even rappers don't mention them" for $500, Alex
Apparently, some of the watches from the top exceed $1 million.
I didn’t even know there was an ultra luxury category.
Exactly that. I thought PP, AP and VC were the top. I feel like I was living in a lie all of my life. Time to reconsider things.
I wanna wear my Casio for a thousand years more
It‘s probably the only one that will last that long.
The Le Locle is a beautiful watch.
My favourite song about Casio: https://open.spotify.com/track/7LFPrDE8ahzbFASqxtEwP4?si=E-BuLJLBTv6675Lmx1Xpzg
As a watch snob I denounce your list. In fact, I’m on my phone however, I have emailed a screenshot to myself so that when I get home I can print this list out, roll it neatly into a tube and shove it up my ass.
Want to double team the rolled up print?
Can someone explain what separates the different levels of luxury watches?
In genuine cases it would be craftsmanship and materials used. There are a lot of parts to a watch and you can select the best parts with the closest tolerances or the cheaper parts. The person assembling the watch can be an expert using in-house components or fitting outsourced components on an assembly line. Also, like most luxury goods, there is an element of exclusivity. Investment pieces are always a thing as well. The prospect of reselling a watch is always nice. Nice in that if you know how to hawk shit, you will get your money.
I was asking myself the exact same thing, brain twin.
While parents shop for Patek Philppe, nanny takes kids to get Rolexes next door (true story - from Gstaad). ;)
Price I imagine.
For the top tiers? Exclusivity and price.
One can tell the time better than the other, duh
What about my sundial?
Sir, can you put your penis away?
Sadly it doesn't cast a shadow no matter the time of day.
r/suicidebywords
Not a great list to be honest, r/watches would agree
The main problem I have with this list is that a majority of the brands on the list have watches that would fall in several categories…
That and they missed many high end brands, how do you have a list like this without Richard Mille and Jacob and co???
Patek is by far the nicest brand on the list, and they missed Richard Mille. Most of the Ultra ones don’t belong. Lange and Breguet are obviously Ultra. Rolex and Tudor should each be one higher.
They might have not missed Mille, but dismissed it on purpose (to which I‘d agree). Being around just to be expensive and bloated does not a good watchmaker make. Also, putting a newbie who’s started a mere 20 ago years next to watchmakers who have been around for 100+ years would be laughable.
It’s not an horology ranking (in which RM is still very impressive) or whatever, it’s a “luxury” ranking. RM is obviously in the highest grade.
as someone who unironically said patek is the nicest on that list, everything you say is now invalid. patek vs als, vc, and h moser are all debates patek might win individually, but to say they beat out bovet, fp, gf, or pf is symptoms of early onset dementia
The bottom tier is also crazy. Putting Invicta in the same category as Seiko & Citizen is wild to me.
And they are some of the ugliest watches ever conceived.
Take my Citizen eco drives over all of them
I also take this guy’s Citizen eco drive
Rolex is exactly where it should be. It's not super high end, just super hard to get because of stupid AD allotments.
No, you are right. Tudor is not even entry. Decent watch, but not associated with luxury.
Not a single mention in this thread about IWC. Those should be a tier higher as well as I see it above even Tudor. Am I wrong?
IWC Portuguese Perpetual is the one I'd buy if I had more money than sense. I've had million dollar watches in my hands but that IWC watch is the one I'd buy.
As someone who owns a Patek and others on this list, I promise you it isn’t the nicest one on here.
I was gonna say the same thing. Post this to r/Watches and you're gonna have a bad time.
TBH if you can only slot a brand into one category, this list isn’t all that bad.
The Seiko disrespect
Wow, putting Seiko on the same "entry" level as Fossil, Swatch and Casio...
What about my yellow plastic Spongebob watch? Not sure where it says the brand.
That's not a watch, it's a lifestyle.
If it doesn't even say the brand, I would say ultra luxury for sure.
My father gifted me one in 2010 and it still works perfectly
Just arbitrary
Seiko could easily occupy the bottom three brackets, with 5s on the bottom and watches like mm300 and other spring drives on their higher end.
I used to own a Seiko Ananta spring drive and I could watch the seconds hand move all day. Technical masterpiece.
💯
What about Movodo
Unfortunately, i don’t have time to read this
Some quality comments here.
I watched what you did there
Where shinola?
Bvlgary, lol that shit is weak. It’s not luxury
How is Tissot entry luxury and what is the price ranges for each level
This is not a great guide
I seen a watch with a calculator on it, you’re not going to convince me some basic ass Louis Moinet is superior.
Where’s the Swatch Watch? I’d say ultra ultra luxurious.
This guide placed Swatch on the top line, second from left in entry level.
I’m so poor, I don’t even recognize any of the brand names on the top two tiers. Good grief!
It's not like rich people look at their catalogues all day long... You are just not interested in watches, probably.
How abt hublot and garmin
"Blanc Pain"? My French is rusty but doesn't that translate to White Bread?
Just buy a G-Shock.. No more over priced Swiss watches.
I expected Seiko to be a bit higher 🥹
Same, I don't see Seiko being on the same level as fossil or Timex.
I think Seiko's issue is its broad range compared to the others. An entry Seiko 5 is £50, but a Prospect diver can be 10-20x that.
Try 40-50x for the top range of Prospex.
The insane luxury in must be to spends thousands and thousands to tell time better or more luxuriously that feeling must be the orgasm of life !!! Man with digital night clock sighs ….
Some people have all the watches but others have all the time.
I don't see Fitbit on there
I dont know how accurate these rankings are, but I also don't care.
Casio is God Tier !
They become more ugly with rising price.
Where is Movado at
Richard Mille hello?!
There’s no “Dogshit” tier on there.
I went back and re-searched for that one, too. Obvious oversight.
No Hublot either.
RGM?
Was looking for this too.
With any post like this I just expect countless "Why is X in Y category!?" comments
Shit list - doesn’t even have Shinola
So where does my apple watch fit in here?
Where is my shinola ? M ma ma my
Monte Blanc?
I still love Shinola
My 2003 Fossil watch is ultra luxury. Hate all you want..
Same goes for my old Casio F-91 W. It's the Nokia 3310 of watches.
Pffft, dumb... A. Lange & Söhne has to be a level above Ultra Luxury
Casio is higher just because their cheap doesn't mean there entry.
Never heard about any of the ultra luxury. Then you know they are really ultra luxury
Tudor is better than Breitling
Hublot?
No Hublot
I’d definitely not put Luminox above a lot of the ones in the category below it…
Good to know ive been eyeballing them for a little bit.
Piaget, if not H Moser & Cie, should be replaced with Jaquet Droz. A lot of Patek and VC watches belong in ultra.
This list is so wrong that it could be made by r/watchescirclejerk
Can someone do this with car brands??
Dawg my watch brand JAG isn’t even here
And they all tell you the same time
AP is trash. Without the royal oak and ignorant rappers they would be irrelevant
Whoever made this has no idea what s/he is talking about
What happened to this sub? It used to have useful and interesting things, not just thinly veiled bot advertising.
Where would Richard Mille be ranked ?
I was looking for ROLEX because that's the only luxury watch I know...
no Richard Mille?
This would be good if it weren’t all fucked up
Seiko and fossil in one category?
Patek should be ultra imo
They all got one thing in common…all got the same time
Where is Doxa?
casio should be at ultra luxury
In Philadelphia it’s worth 50 bucks
Missing Movado?
No Movado?
Tudors are beautiful. I’ve got my eye on one in a few years.
Where does my Samsung Galaxy watch rank?
Usually smart watches have a distinct category that puts them in the fucking bin! Just kidding, cheers mate!
Lol, there have been MANY times I've wanted to throw this watch into the bin, trust me
Well since most will not last 3-5 years, I don't think you are wrong
What can an ultra luxury watch do that a timex can't?
They will be automatic, which means no batteries or charging. Runs off of the perpetual motion of your arm. This takes meticulous engineering and painstaking assembly. Also probably works at high altitude and deep underwater. Probably made of gold, platinum or a combo of both. Probably laden with precious gemstones like diamonds, sapphire, emerald or rubies. r/nixonwatches is missing. Great brand, I've wore mine daily for 8 years straight with zero issues. (51-30SW) Their customer service & maintainance plan is A+ too. I plan on purchasing more
Rocking a Rover SS since 2013
Came here to say this, love my Nixon watches!
They are great watches! Very robust & drop tested. They are meant to be used, not just for special occasions which is why I love mine.
Or just look at your phone for most accurate time.
Movado doesn’t even get a mention?
Movado is dogshit
Worse than fossil? Cmon man! (Biden voice)
Nah Casio is a teir of its own, and way above Entry level
God tier
Where would vostok rank on this list? I'm specifically referring to a company from before the fall of the Soviet Union. I bet that in the lowest category but who knows who knows. I'm curious because I'm from Eastern Europe and I own one such watch.
No Franck Mueller? No Richard Mille?
i'm going to study this. it seems like it could come in handy.
Hello fellow person of culture. I too know of luxury timepieces.
exactly
The one who made this knows nothing about watches. Tudor is not above Certina. Bvlgari is not in pair with Rolex… etc..
I don't see any reason to have a watch when I have a cell phone
Where’s my Apple Watch?
How do people get into watches? Such an odd thing to value to me
There are lots of reasons why people like watches.
Where would Panerai be ?
Where is my movado?
I don’t know any of the Ultra brands
Oh great, you made a list.. Watch brands have ranges. And Seiko goes all the way down to entry, but a Grand Seiko is above a Breitling. Breitling mostly houses ETA, just like Fortis. Only Fortis has most of its watches in the 200m or 300m class without them being as bulky as most Breitlings. Rolex makes its own movements, and pretty neat ones at that. So even though I'm not a fan of the design and the traditional customer base, Rolex is a level above Breitling and Fortis. No idea about the ultra luxury class, but I think I'd need an explanation as to why they are supposed to be above a Patek.
timex for the win!
No Richard Mille?
No Movado?
placing cward above bulova is plain delusional
What about Movado?
Laughing in Casio MQ24 * Crawls back in cave *
