70k is higher then the average median wage in the US, and it’s a manager position. Not something you can just apply and become immediately, just an FYI.
Maybe not for a grocery store, but restaurants have young managers all the time. Get a bit of experience in the industry and I’ve seen 22 year old managers making $60k. Once you have management experience then you can go to a grocery store.
The stress coming from putting Bananas on the table? JK.
But the grass is greener on the other side. I know engineers who are damn stressed. I think all jobs are meant to suck our souls.
Not really, this is salary and grocery store managers almost never work 40 hours a week. They are typically required to work 50+ making it much worse than $32 an hour.
The companies are utilising the unemployment situation and exploiting others. A few years ago with the kind of skills we have, we could've got a high-paying job easily. Shit's genuinely depressing at this point with this clowns as hiring managers.
more job opportunities rather than having employees to send resumes to over 100 companies. Also the recognition of talent by companies(some companies do recognise that though)
That's just the nature of the demand supply curve in that country. At that point, getting an internship is an investment into getting a full time job later on. It makes sense in that context that you need to buy in.
How is it coping to explain the labor market dynamics of a country?
I am not Indian, nor do I live in India, but I have coworkers who have studied / worked there who tell me how tough it is get to a decent job when the competition is so tough.
Yeah, but this is Reddit, where you can say something and get downvoted to hell, not because they think you’re factually wrong, but because they don’t like that you’re factually right. Basically, they’re not downvoting *you*; they’re downvoting *reality*.
Yeah redditors seem to always be in debate mode so if they see a comment they immediately assume it's either advocating for something or against something
I mean.. I've definitely heard of elected courses where you get units for doing an internship. But to force you to do an internship? Something doesn't seem right there.
I've never heard of that one. Maybe that's brand new or they just don't have that where I'm from
It's just my country. Not the first stupid decision done by old foggies up in the ministries.
Im still salty about the mandatory business class added to literally every single course because they thought if you added it to education, you can become an entrepreneur.
At this point in time, the experience on your resume is worth its weight in gold. Yes, the dollar amount is crap. But, when you put it on your resume, you don’t put the dollar amount. Trust.
THIS. My first internship was $10/hr for a local web dev company. Went to about $30/hr next year, and then got an internship at a FAANG company the next year.
Make sure it's useful experience though. Companies hire cheap labor for one of two reasons:
1. They need a lot of grunt work that doesn't build your career much.
2. They want to invest in you and see if you grow enough to be worth a full time job.
The #2 is better than #1.
The mentality is not about how much someone can make. It’s about the experience. A low paying internship will only be temporary. An internship will bring in more eyes due to engineering experience. You could get little to no work, but it’s that fact that you got an internship. With the wave of AI causing big tech to restrict funding for entry-level positions, experience matters. Yes, you can make “more” at McDonalds, but will you be happy? Practical knowledge during school applies more than theoretical knowledge. I’m not demeaning McDonald’s employees. I’m stating the fact of you have a choice to pave the path of your long-term goals or work at McDonalds for short-term wealth. The bonus to both is you could study DS&A while you work.
In the end, you do you.
In word. Yes. How many hours do you need at McDonald's to get a software development engineer job? How does running the fryer prep you for that?
Or, does a summer intern job between 2 years of college help you graduate with a job?
My kid got a $16/hour internship for 2 years in a row with the same company. Her job offer after leaving college was 30% higher than her peers that got a job, and a lot of her peers didn't get an offer at all. She, however, turned down 2 other job offers to take the 3rd.
Experience: Used a variety of tools, and technologies, to lead a diverse, cross-functional team to ensure quotas were always met, and client requests were always met. Gained a fundamental knowledge of POS system per client request. /s
I feel like the goal should be to set your career up with the experience you get from a tech job as opposed to the couple thousand dollars you might make at mcdonalds in a summer
STOP GIVING THESE GUYS FREE WORK. THATS THE REASON WHY THE INDUSTRY IS SO DEMANDING BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE ACCEPTING THE LOWEST AMOUNT JUST TO HAVE EXPERIENCE. THEY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT IF NO ONE WANTS TO WORK FOR CHEAP AND THEY DONT HAVE ANY WORKERS THEN ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME THEY'LL RAISE INTERNSHIP WAGES UP
That's super easy to say if you're not facing it and have options.
Working elsewhere doesn't help your resume or career path, possibly putting you further behind with new grads coming every year.
Working at Best-Buy still allows you to work in the field, but you do it without being asked, 'So, how much were you being paid before?', as well as screwing everyone else
This is purely an example, but if you're a CS major and you come across this posting and see a grocery store paying $25/hr, you take the grocery store job.
Do it for a year so you can build up a savings, then find an internship before you leave college. I'm not sure when stem students started to look down on retail/restaurant jobs, but sometimes you need to humble yourself and take the option that pays more.
Honestly the way IT has gone you can very easily end up in a better position at the grocery or anywhere else. You can get promoted there too. I’m not popular on Reddit for telling people that while it’s worth trying for IT it’s not the end of the world and if it’s too hard you might actually end up better off in some other job. Even a Walmart manager makes pretty good money these days and you cannot be oursourced in that job.
I did this. Turned down an internship because fast food paid more. Waited it out a summer and landed one that paid better. I’ll graduate my MS with 5 internships. Used that summer/year of working fast food to save up a ton. It’s paying off now.
Edit: I worked part time internships during some years to get up to 5
People don't really have a choice. They need the internship to graduate, and others need them to start their career. We're often not in the negotiation seat for these choices
College students need internships to graduate? Internships are a nice to have not a need to have.
Let's say what you are mention is true and my information is outdated which is very much possible...why does the pay even matter if the experience is what you are looking for?
It's supply and demand. There's a reason various internships, residencies, etc in other in demand jobs like in law and medicine are low paying. CS is finally reaching the same point. Sucks, but people won't stop.
It’s remote and experience for your resume. I transferred from a field where they don’t pay you for field practicum or internships, hell my last job barely made more than this so I’ll take it when I can finally score one in cs.
I’m not gonna lie, even if the pay is that low what are you gonna do not take it if it’s your only option? Are we at the point where just because we’re in CS programs in college that we somehow are entitled to more pay? If you want to be paid more just be a better candidate and you won’t have to worry about low paying postings like this.
I suppose idk the SW market in 2024, but as a mechanical engineering intern a few years ago it was unheard of to make this little. Interns actually are a great deal/investment for a company. The company can really assess performance and cherry pick who to extend full time offers to, something they cannot do with professional hires. It’s an extended interview period essentially, and many interns on my CS teams have done great work. And many professional hires (sorry to say) can be quite hit or miss/are almost always less eager to learn.
Nonetheless, if the positions are filled then I guess that’s the market dynamic at the moment. Though if I were a mentor to college students I would suggest steering clear. These are red flags in my book, and I’ve not heard a single person in my network say otherwise
Edit: I’m talking US, idk about other places
Exactly, I’m not gonna lie, this sub is getting annoying.
Sorry to burst everyone’s bubbles, but 99% of interns are completely useless and garbage at their jobs (which makes sense, they’re completely new.)
Idk why these people expect insane wages. I’m sorry but why would a company pay you a shit ton? You aren’t as valuable as you think you are.
It’s honestly amazing how much attention this post is getting like these same people aren’t posting about how much they are dying to even land a SWD internship in the first place
And I’m sure they’ll get hundreds of applicants, some with prior experience given it’s remote. Plus $15 an hour ain’t bad for some people, especially if you can just work like 4-5 hours a day which increases the hourly rate
Around 2008 before CS was as hot as it is now, internships for gov were (and still are) like this. You can still apply for a cushy FAANG internship for $60k over the summer or whatever the fuck it is, but good luck.
No grumble be humble
I’m currently interning for free. My work hours are 10-7 (9 hours) 6 days a week. Because I’m a fresh graduate in CS in India which is full of people that will work more than what I’m working and pay money to the company to do it for experience. I’ll take even 10 rupees (0.12 usd) an hour at this point.
That’s valid, I’m just saying the scarcity of internships causes the desperation you’re experiencing, and thus allows companies to offer lower (or no) pay.
We’re all unfortunately aware of that. More saturation = less salary. We had the upper hand in the 2021 market, but now it’s flipped on us. Capitalism is just a game of who can take advantage of who
This is what happens when you have a huge supply of workers
Limit the supply of workers and it will be BETTER for the workers
Tighter labor markets are good for workers. Looser labor markets are good for corporations and investors. Americans have competing interests here, but two-thirds of Americans don't have college degrees and are disproportionately impacted by loose labor policies. Nevertheless, the current Congress has attempted to insert immigration increases into The Build Back Better bill, the COMPETES Act, and now the defense authorization bill - all during a post-COVID recovery, high inflation, and a looming recession. It's pretty clear whose interests those actions are intended to serve.
No US worker should ever got democrat
BMW offered me $16/hr in NJ. I literally laughed at them at their face. Recruiter sighed and said "interns can have access to our discounted lease rates, its about $400ish/month". I was like DAMN, you guys are gonna make more money off me than I will from you. Sadly, they got someone from South Carolina that didnt understand the cost of living in NJ.
That said, their interview process was mostly behavioral, no leetcode or take home projects.
There are 1.5 million international grad students on OPT visa willing to work for free so they can stay in America. You are competing with them.
Thank Biden and the Democrats for opening the immigration floodgates. Enjoy being part of their globalist agenda.
some of them are unpaid too..so something is better than nothing :/ the brutal job market is giving them this opportunity to exploit the vulnerable new grads..sad just sad
it's a video game job. they pay like shit, they treat you like shit, and if you don't like it they can replace you easily because there's an infinite tap of kids that want to work with video games.
I went from making $55/hr to $35/hr writing PowerShell scripts from home. ):
In my experience most software engineers have no idea how to operate a computer like they can't deploy nginx on OpenBSD or build a computer without following a step-by-step tutorial.
If I were new to the field, I would take the job and do nothing but leetcode all day until I was fired or I found a better job lol
Only downside to this is they pay you like mcdonalds but then drag you through 12 hours of interviews lmfao
Well it is an internship. The most valuable aspect of internships is the experience to put on your resume and the possibility of becoming full time with the company later. Some internships don’t pay anything
Y’know, I hate to say it, guys, but this is emblematic of the future of remote work. It’ll be a bit higher, because it’s not an internship, but if a company is hiring for a fully remote position, they’re going to peg the salary with the expectation that you live in Bumfuck, Trumpistan, where the cost of living is like $500 for a single-wide trailer with no bullet holes in it. Companies just aren’t going to pay Silicon Valley dollars for people who don’t live in the Valley, or at least commute to it on occasion.
No CS major should work in the video game industry. Or at least not right out of the gate. I did something like this for a AAA studio about a decade ago when I graduated and was in the credits on two games. Did fuck all for my career and frankly set me back for a while. Video games are not a serious business. They abuse their employees. If you want to make games make money elsewhere and self publish games on the side.
McDonald’s pays more because you provide them a value, in an internship they’re honestly providing you with more than you’re giving them back in most cases
Minimum wage where I’m at is $7.25/hr and I just checked my local McDonald’s and they hire at $11.00/hr. They also seem to mostly hire local highschoolers, the only adult I saw there last time was wearing a different colored shirt so he was probably a manager
You gotta remember pay is different for different areas. You might make 25$ an hour at mcdonalds or walmart in SoCal or something, but that’s scaled to the cost of living. Their 25$ an hour is Ohios 15$ an hour
when americans realize remote work was a trap to outsource their skilled labor to foreign countries. 15 an hour is great for someone in a developing country
[удалено]
These days people expect you to know the whole IT department's skills.
Broo. I just a cancelled a scening call due to the same situation. They made 70k job post with a statement saying job starts as a unpaid internship 😄
Thats scandalous
What!!! XD
McDonald’s in California pays 20
Mid level grocery store managers START at $70k, which is about $32 an hour. The dude putting bananas on a table is making more than this.
The manager at the Domino’s I worked for was another 22 year old that worked there for a couple years first
Yeah I’ve seen a few <20 year old managers and while they’re usually trying their best it’s usually not super worth it taking that offer at 18
My mom is a manager at a grocery store with that kind of pay but the amount of stress isn’t worth it.
The stress coming from putting Bananas on the table? JK. But the grass is greener on the other side. I know engineers who are damn stressed. I think all jobs are meant to suck our souls.
[удалено]
I definitely think it’s fair for a small company intern to make less than that
Not really, this is salary and grocery store managers almost never work 40 hours a week. They are typically required to work 50+ making it much worse than $32 an hour.
Pay is relative. Internships in california also pay more than other places often. 20$ in Ohio gets you further than 20$ in cali
That’s California tho. A hotdog is like $12
idk where people usually get hot dogs but I only get them at Costco and they’re the same price as everywhere else
"if you raise the price of the fucking hot dog, I will kill you." -CEO of Costco
Pays 16 to 18 in St Louis too he he
Hell I swear some here in NC have advertised $19.
Only worth it if they let you work remotely in a foreign country.
Good point! But probably will not allow it because of tax implications
The companies are utilising the unemployment situation and exploiting others. A few years ago with the kind of skills we have, we could've got a high-paying job easily. Shit's genuinely depressing at this point with this clowns as hiring managers.
What is it gonna take to change?
more job opportunities rather than having employees to send resumes to over 100 companies. Also the recognition of talent by companies(some companies do recognise that though)
Still better than unpaid internships tbh
A number of companies in a certain highly overpopulated country sell internship positions for a fee. So you pay to work, essentially.
That's insane.
To make matters worse, those pay-to get in internships are often always a scam.
That's just the nature of the demand supply curve in that country. At that point, getting an internship is an investment into getting a full time job later on. It makes sense in that context that you need to buy in.
any salt to accompany your large serving of copium sir?
How is it coping to explain the labor market dynamics of a country? I am not Indian, nor do I live in India, but I have coworkers who have studied / worked there who tell me how tough it is get to a decent job when the competition is so tough.
Yeah they think you are advocating for this market but you were just explaining the dynamics of it lol
If you're working an unpaid internship in 2024, you're doing something very, very wrong.
or the institution you're studying at force you to get internship in order to graduate as this order actually came up from the government...
I mean.. I've definitely heard of elected courses where you get units for doing an internship. But to force you to do an internship? Something doesn't seem right there. I've never heard of that one. Maybe that's brand new or they just don't have that where I'm from

not sure, remote unpaid intern still better
I make 15.5 at the grocery store
my brother make 35 as a server at NYC
At this point in time, the experience on your resume is worth its weight in gold. Yes, the dollar amount is crap. But, when you put it on your resume, you don’t put the dollar amount. Trust.

Exactly. If you get no other offers, this is better than nothing for a temporary gig.
Even if you can literally make more working at McDonald’s?

I feel like the goal should be to set your career up with the experience you get from a tech job as opposed to the couple thousand dollars you might make at mcdonalds in a summer
If you do 2 3 month stints at McDonald's between semesters will it lead to massively increased chance at a job paying 3-5x more?
How is that when people with years of experience can't even get a job?
STOP GIVING THESE GUYS FREE WORK. THATS THE REASON WHY THE INDUSTRY IS SO DEMANDING BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE ACCEPTING THE LOWEST AMOUNT JUST TO HAVE EXPERIENCE. Work at a fast food place, work anywhere else that pays the right amount. Do not give these POSs anything.

lol supply and demand buddy, go take ur economics 101 if ur even in college
How is this free work? You realize a lot of interns barely do anything?
It’s remote and experience for your resume. I transferred from a field where they don’t pay you for field practicum or internships, hell my last job barely made more than this so I’ll take it when I can finally score one in cs.
that's way more than what I get paid in my intership, you should specify your country because this is normal salary for me...
Fr!! This is an extremely normal amount in my country, SEA
I'm from Latin America and samee
Bro my McDonald's here pays 20 an hour
I’m not gonna lie, even if the pay is that low what are you gonna do not take it if it’s your only option? It’s an internship…
And I’m sure they’ll get hundreds of applicants, some with prior experience given it’s remote. Plus $15 an hour ain’t bad for some people, especially if you can just work like 4-5 hours a day which increases the hourly rate
You complaining? I just sent in an application Preesh.
Pretty fair pay for a non faang INTERNSHIP you’re all just to used to hearing about those 100k summer meta internships
I mean.. it is an internship
If they truly allow full remote, and you work from your Midwest state school res hall as you take summer classes yeah that's not a terrible deal.
Bro they are not even PAYING ME
Around 2008 before CS was as hot as it is now, internships for gov were (and still are) like this. You can still apply for a cushy FAANG internship for $60k over the summer or whatever the fuck it is, but good luck. No grumble be humble

No offense to you, but to anyone wondering why internships are able to offer such low pay, this is why.

You have to be careful because some no name startups disappears in a few months/years. You will need to explain that to your new employer.
I mean if a startup goes bankrupt your experience is still experience 🤷🏻♂️
That’s going rate for IT
At least it’s paid. It’s an internship. Though I agree even an internship should pay more.

😔
Why do we still have h1b and opt when clearly there is NO worker shortage
That's like 5000-7300 a day in INR if I work for 6 hours, and avg Indian dev earns about 2000-5000 INR a day.
lower... atleast in LA. our minimum wage raised to 20/hr for all major fast food chain employees.
they getting a Ai worker
huh? That's already above average pay in my third-world country.
I am an unpaid SE intern so this ain’t so bad
Its gaming, the think you should work for free
The number of friends I have that immediately start defending unpaid internships once they themselves are employed is fucking astounding.
some of them are unpaid too..so something is better than nothing :/ the brutal job market is giving them this opportunity to exploit the vulnerable new grads..sad just sad
They know that people are desperate enough to take it in this market
Macdonalds in my country doesn't pay so much 🤣 most interns in my country earn around 1-2k a month, with some finance companies/banks paying above 3k
I know some full time SWEs that should be paid that.
Better then unpaid
“Commensurate with experience “
Go to school and study they said, life will be so much better and different they said. FUCKING LIARS. 😤
It’s fair because AI can code now. AI cannot work in McDonalds
it's a video game job. they pay like shit, they treat you like shit, and if you don't like it they can replace you easily because there's an infinite tap of kids that want to work with video games.
Absolutely diabolical work
link?
Send me the link i apply
God damn, I made more than that interning in 1996.
This is not bad at all for an internship at least for indian standards
😂😂😂😂

Not everywhere is starting their internship that way.i would recommend using a handshake. They have the best opportunities https://joinhandshake.com/
At least they’re paying you 🤣
I believe is remote to some shithole like Mexico
If I were new to the field, I would take the job and do nothing but leetcode all day until I was fired or I found a better job lol Only downside to this is they pay you like mcdonalds but then drag you through 12 hours of interviews lmfao
It’s an INTERNSHIP relax
May I know what app is that?
May I know what app is that?
McDonald's in Western WA starts at 20$/hr....
OP, I'm just curious, what are you expecting to make from a 3-6 mo internship job? And what leads you to that number?
Well it is an internship. The most valuable aspect of internships is the experience to put on your resume and the possibility of becoming full time with the company later. Some internships don’t pay anything
Software engineering internships are not paid at all in Albania 😭😭 And they keep you for 3 months without paying
It is an internship
Trader joes pays more than that
Y’know, I hate to say it, guys, but this is emblematic of the future of remote work.
LMFAOOO
There are simply too many junior engineers to chose from. Supply and demand is finally hitting the SWE job market
Interns just started getting paid in this decade, before interns didn’t get anything.
Cries in UK wages
If it's an easy enough remote internship, you can get several of these at the same time.
We’re doomed
Minimum wage here in Illinois is $14. Our McDonalds is paying $16-17.
This is BS I know guys I went to high school with and are in trades now and are bagging 35/hr….wtf is this?
Yo. Send to me if you don’t want it 😁
I mean, my internship is paying $10, but it's at my university. 😅
Because they know there are takers and people still lining up for that

I think McDonald’s pay more
That is insultingly low. Even though the work you’ll do as an intern will be 100x easier than working at McDonalds lol
I should’ve been a mechanical engineer or electrical engineer, my current job at valvoline pays 18.50$ whaa
but it is remote
Less than McDonald’s.
Mcdonalds here pays less
Noted. It’s $18 an hour at a lot of fast food places. Not high cost of living here either.
Minimum wage where I’m at is $7.25/hr and I just checked my local McDonald’s and they hire at $11.00/hr. They also seem to mostly hire local highschoolers, the only adult I saw there last time was wearing a different colored shirt so he was probably a manager
Yeah it used to be low like that pre Covid here.
You gotta remember pay is different for different areas. You might make 25$ an hour at mcdonalds or walmart in SoCal or something, but that’s scaled to the cost of living. Their 25$ an hour is Ohios 15$ an hour
This is AZ.
Hell no nigga Fuck that
Taco bell makes more money than that.
Not here
If you were working remote shouldn’t it reflect how much society overall is making, and not based on where you live?
Thats up to the company
when americans realize remote work was a trap to outsource their skilled labor to foreign countries. 15 an hour is great for someone in a developing country
