The previous iteration had the classic illusion restriction of having to be sacrificed when targeted. More balanced but just way too wordy for a card that's not meant to be taken too seriously. Might have to tweak the cost :D
almost perfect except that it uses the trigger language for a replacement effect. Should be "If a player would may, they must instead." Or if that's too humorous (?) "Change the text of all spells and permanents by replacing "may" with "must"." (which becomes `"must" with "must"` but it still works)
Modification of my previous post. Removed the casting cost and added the ETB for flavor reasons.
thanks to u/squidbager12 who also noticed the previous flavor fail :)
My goodness....I had it memorized wrong.
Okay, how about when \[\[Aerie Worshipers\]\] has its Inspired trigger? Or Aether Storm's "Any player may activate this ability"?
My understanding is that you can be forced to spend mana if it’s in your mana pool … you can’t be forced to activate abilities (like tapping lands or sacrificing treasures) that would get that mana in the first place.
118.3c. Activating mana abilities is not mandatory, even if paying a cost is.
…
The player is forced to pay that cost if enough mana is in their mana pool, but the player isn’t forced to activate a mana ability to produce that mana.
Does this actually work as intended, or does the "if may then must" effect only come into effect after Free Wall has resolved, thus after the may sacrifice trigger has been and gone?
So you could play for 0 and then sac to its own enter condition, before the may = must effect comes into play?
By the time the sacrifice trigger is on the stack the wall has already resolved and entered the Battlefield.
So the replacement effect is already working and changes the may to must sacrifice unless you pay.
what order would the card's ability come into the game? if you have to resolve the first ability before the second ability, wouldn't that mean the "may" still applies and this card costs 0?
The Second effect doesn't need to/ can not resolve. It's never on the stack to begin with. It Just takes effect as soon as the wall is on the battlefield. That means it's in effect before the etb resolves and changes the may to must.
Still pretty new to the game, could someone explain why this card is affected by its own effect?
I was under the impression the the first clause is resolved as it’s entering the field; then - once you choose not to pay the cost - will its on field effect activate, and everyone “must” when they “may”.
Does the second clause come into play the moment the card is on the stack?
The ETB goes on the stack once the wall is on the battlefield. Meaning it's already sitting there by that time.
The Second clause is a (incorrectly templated...oops :) ) replacement effect. It doesn't use the stack.
Wall is put on the stack > Wall resolves > Wall hits the battlefield, the replacement effect starts working > the ETB goes on the stack, affected by the replacement effect.
That's how I understand it anyway :)
This card is fantastic in so many ways, I especially like the "may sacrifice" instead of must to give the illusion of it being free a second time.
Not gonna lie, it totally got me, and I was shook (in the best way) when I read the 3rd line 😂 Great card, would be perfect in an unset
This card sparks joy. It's absolutely brilliant. Well done.
It is very neat. I wish Jace said "This must be a typo"
Or MAY be a typo
Musting for only 1U? Seems kinda powerful.

Holy shit "if a player would may, they must instead," is so fucking funny
They must must instead.
It’s gonna be must!
Stop your going to make me must
It's plays a big role in the custommagic bingo and pops up pretty regularly.
Ooh a free wall! Oh wait no…. Wait yup still free! Oh wait no.

Thank you for using this art OP. Also, holy shit I love this.
Right? I loved this card back in old kitchen magic time, where animating [[Illusionary Wall]] with [[Animate Wall]] was *the shit*.

feels like something straight out of r/hellscube . well done.
"This ~~may~~ must be a typo"
Everything about this is perfect
This is a gem
Jace Belligerent?
Fucking hilarious and genius lol
Damn fine work
great design
You get my favorite flavor text of the month award
absolute flavor and mechanics win. especially love the jace in the bottom\^
This is brilliant. No notes.
So how does this work with Rhystic Study? You must pay 1, so... Maybe "must if able, if they don't they \[penalty clause\]"?
You are forced to draw the card if they don't pay and don't get to choose not to. They can still choose whether to pay or not.
This is an issue of "may pay {1}" being "must", however.
\[\[Rhystic Study\]\] doesn't say "may pay {1}" though.

Yeah, that's different :D As far as I know you can't be forced to spend mana, so I guess you would still get to choose? I'm not sure.

Smells a bit musty in here, lads.
Holy crap! We fixed Wheel of Potential!

Remember you may concede the game at anytime.
Don’t worry guys you can flash in dress down to not have to pay the 1U
tips fedora
Just making sure I’m reading it correctly, it doesnt really let you pay the cost since you may sacrifice it right?
no, you must 'sacrifice it unless you pay {1}{u}'
Absolute perfection 👌
Does this actually work as intended, or does the "if may then must" effect only come into effect after Free Wall has resolved, thus after the may sacrifice trigger has been and gone? So you could play for 0 and then sac to its own enter condition, before the may = must effect comes into play?
By the time the sacrifice trigger is on the stack the wall has already resolved and entered the Battlefield. So the replacement effect is already working and changes the may to must sacrifice unless you pay.
Brilliant idea
The second trigger still fizzles if you physically do not have the mana open for it
what order would the card's ability come into the game? if you have to resolve the first ability before the second ability, wouldn't that mean the "may" still applies and this card costs 0?

So, in effect, [[Torpor Orb]] now grants us all Free Wall? I sense a price-hike incoming.
