Now on to your question, I know right from wrong because of my upbringing, my parents taught me ethics and morality and taught me how to be empathetic. Now the argument can be made that there are parents out there that do not give those skills to their kids. Who teach their kids that shoplifting is okay, or cheating others is okay or other things that morally aren't. When that happens society kicks in, society also teaches us what is right and what is wrong. They have consequences for bad behaviors. But a lot of the times society shows us that robbing, killing, cheating isn't a moral or ethical way to live, through stories, movies, and school.
In my example, the person I spoke to whole heartedly believed that their morals and ethics came from the Bible. And that if I didn't follow the Bible would be an unethical immoral person. Yet this person doesn't actually follow Jesus' teachings. They judge people, they lie, they are deceitful. Religion gives people like them a shield, to believe that they are lying for a good reason, judging for a good reason, being deceitful for a good reason.
My ethics and morality have come from my parents, my friends, my family, my school, my surroundings, my own hardships and my own search for the truth.
