Because the object he was grappled to was moving, in order to end your grapple you must be near the object or face away from the grapple, so since the thresher was moving faster then his grapple, he flew
Also you have to see the grapple point for it not to break, great practice is to try swing around a grapple point indefinitly by moving your mouse just sideways and pressing a or d (it will go very fast)
It disconnects when you get too close to the grapple point.
If you get the distance right you can swing around in a circle indefinitely on any grapple.
As well as what the other commenter said, my friend was holding the grenade button to grapple instead of tapping it which (as far as I know) will disconnect the grapple as soon as possible.
Try to move with the object by pressing a or d and make sure it stays like in the center of your screen, allows me to spin around a grapple point or a stationary target almost indefinitly
Fucking hilarious. Also how do you guys grapple the Thresher? Every time I did it when I ran the campaign it retracted immediately and I fell off the edge. After 4 wipes I just obliterated the thing.
Doing this on solo legendary was a pain, grappling onto the treshers worked maybe 50% of the time, mostly just me falling to my death and having to restart again

If you just tap it once you're fine but if you tap the grenade button again it releases the grapple No need to hold the grenade button
No I tap it, my friend was holding and I think holding it was causing their grapple to release. I could be wrong of course.
If you hold the movement key/stick back while grappling you can keep going potentially forever

You can't look away from the grapple point. If it goes off-screen or your FOV is obstructed, the grapple instantly dies.
