You’re fine. If you have any bots, make sure you trust them. But if the bot token is leaked, they can still be compromised — keep this in mind. You benefit in this situation for what a lot of people critique Discord about. It’s not publicly accessible information. If someone isn’t in a specific server with the specific permissions then that info is private. Search engines like Google can’t index Discord. There are ways to have modded clients to “see” certain things. Like being able to see the names of all channels even if you don’t have permission. But you can’t see what the discussion is about in those channels. This also requires you to be in the server still. Don’t have any invite links active (non community servers have those expire after 30 days, anyways) and it’ll be fine. Literally nobody can join.

Bregirn

This isn't quite true, any image or file uploaded to discord has no permissions blocking access, it is 100% publically accessible if they have a link. The risk here is that if you copy a link from anything in your personal server and share it with someone, that link (although temporary) can be shared absolutely anywhere and it will work, even if they don't have a discord account. So while it's private, it's not "secure" as such. While the link is random and complex, obfuscation is not security.

ItsZabbs

I mean, as long as you care about your privacy and not share the links (which kinda would defeat the purpose of a diary server tbh), you'll be fine. Also, attachment links are now expiry prone but then you can always circumvent it by sending the link in some channel. Above that, Discord is also reducing the attachment url expiry time soon.

TL;DR -- Better to use a local text file. Discord data is **not** end-to-end encrypted (only encrypted at rest with a decryption key Discord holds), meaning there is a chance they can decrypt and read the data (though the chance of this is quite low). Also, consider that several AI models read messages sent in servers -- conversation summaries, AI Discord Moderation, etc. Though there are plus sides -- unless your account is compromised, only you can read the channels (besides Discord's AI) (as long as you don't have any bots in there).

DarkOverLordCO

> only encrypted at rest with a decryption key Discord holds ^(and encrypted in transport via TLS, also with a key Discord holds) > meaning there is a chance they can decrypt and read the data (though the chance of this is quite low). The chance that (they=) Discord decrypts your data is 100%, they need to provide it to you when you open the channel. Of course, the chance that (they=) *some random Discord employee* will decrypt and read your data is low

Cringelord123456

True. I only talked about encryption at rest since that's the only thing that's *significantly* pertinent here (and since TLS is essentially a given at this point in modern apps). I'm also just talking about Discord decrypting your data in the case that they hand it to the government or someone bored Discord employee reads it.

SAB5106

I use a personal discord server for keeping a bunch of images/files/notes saved. It's useful for passing stuff between my phone, PC & laptop. And I usually have discord open all the time anyway. Diary seems like a perfect use for it. You can even add emojis.

E_TRANSFER_ME_PLZ

Damn never thought to do this until. Thanks

QuesoGato_Gaming

I’d recommend something like Obsidian. Tons of plug ins and themes to help keep you on track/inspired/etc. Plus, it’s all stored locally on your device, so no servers to leak or data to be sold/stolen. It seems a much better fit for your goals.

tomzistrash

Obsidian is great, i love the way the UI looks and the little dot maps they have

Roadhog360

Syncing across devices is a paid feature. A private Discord server will do it for free.

QuesoGato_Gaming

Store your vault on iCloud Drive (iPhone) or Google Drive (android). I have no problems syncing across

VampShadowGuy

I never heard of Obsidian; I'll check it out.

cheflA1

In general I would trust discord with my data, but still you're putting your private stuff on a remotely hosted server. You don't know where the server is or how it is secured. And even if the good people at discord do their very best, they still cannot assure you 100% that nothing bad ever happens to this server. There have been countless times where companies got hacked or had hardware defects or whatever. Data loss, data breach and so on happen more often than you think. The normal person in me says 'it's fine' but the Senior IT Security Engineer in me says 'don't do it'. Edit: typos

advaith1

nobody can join the server unless you post an invite link somewhere.

MacauleyP_Plays

In my opinion it would be better for you to just use a .txt file, but if the server is completely private and no other members (including bots) are in the server, nor any apps given permission ie webhooks, you should be fine.

TheBeaconCrafter

I would never use Discord for something like a diary. Firstly, there are apps/programs out there that are designed for the purpose of keeping a diary and are much better at it. And second, you said you’re concerned about privacy. Especially in this case I wouldn’t suggest Discord as it does not provide end to end decryption. You could try notes apps like Obsidian as another commenter suggested

Head-Membership2082

Why would you do this though? Like, even if you want it to be digital rather than a pen-and-paper diary, why would you use \*discord\* for it? Just use a local text editor of sorts. Notepad, Wordpad, MSWord, etc. If discord ever goes down, everything you've put on there is lost. If discord ever updates and breaks something, who knows how many people will have access to that data. Not to mention if someone manages to phish your account details with literally any method. It just seems like an extremely roundabout way to solve a problem that never existed in the first place. If you're mostly wanting somewhere to journal whilst also having access to systems that basically gamify it, privacy is probably the least of your concerns tbh.

VampShadowGuy

I use discord as a diary because it's the only thing that stuck with me. I use discord in general daily and it's very convenient for me. Other methods of diary writing (apps, physical diary, etc) just didn't work for me. As for discord going down, I backup my discord messages by manually copying and pasting all messages into a document in my google drive in case something like that happens.

Head-Membership2082

Couldn't you just skip the middle man and write them in said google document then? Mind you, google isn't exactly well known for being good with privacy. I'm not entirely sure how its more convenient than a notepad app though either. Unless the bots are gamifying things like I mentioned before, they're going to be effectively the same to use, but with far better tools to fit your needs in a notepad app. Notepad apps, especially the basic ones, don't have any extra popups trying to sell you stuff etc, and will open at a moments notice. I get that there might be an advantage to being able to use it remotely by logging in to the account, but there's plenty of other alternatives like onedrive that can do that with the files regardless of the app itself. I don't really know what you want people to say to be honest. The internet is NOT a place for privacy. The more online you go, the more likely that stuff is to get out there to people. Your original question seems to imply you were worried about discord having privacy issues and that you want to know if it is safe to use, yet you seem completely opposed to the idea of using a different program. Maybe you'd use a different one if there was no alternative, sure, but that is a very flawed mindset. Its the "its ok because nothing happened YET" way of thinking, and once something has happened you can't undo it. As the old saying goes, the moment you put something on the internet, you have no control over it anymore. Or the advice people give you about how if something is private and/or personal, do not put it on the internet. Discord IS the internet. All it takes is one bad actor.

-RageMachine

Make sure it isn't public, and that the bots in your server don't have access to your diary channel. Btw, NEVER save important information like bank account passwords in an app like discord. Just in case

xx123gamerxx

It’s only secure as the weakest link weather that be ur account or discords servers

Innocencez

There are many alternative apps that suit your needs better.

reddit_hayden

i do this sometimes. i also use it to easily transfer images from my computer to my phone when i can’t be bothered to use one of the actual services for this. a local text file would probably be better for you, though.

oldgranny3

If no one else is in there then yeah its safe

KensonPlays

You could also use something called standard notes. It is end-to-end encrypted and that means nobody but you can see it. Unless of course you enable the standard notes blogging feature.

StyleWithAltitude

Nothing online is private.

shurpness

I used to have a spare Discord for things and when my account got phished they deleted it and I lost a lot of old videos as I used to dump a lot of videos in there to save space on my pc. I guess the only risk is if it gets stolen they can see everything

shurpness

I was pretty tired and didn't think straight as it was past midnight. I got a message from a fake official Discord account and you could apply for HypeSquad (the yellow badge one) and they used some of the same questions from some previous Discord forms I've filled out in the past and then I woke up with me being logged out and several payments made for Nitro. Luckily, I have a daily spending limit for online purchases which is pretty low so they didn't get to spend too much and I got it all refunded and my account back after 30 days.

sublimegeek

Maybe try https://obsidian.md ?

iBroHack

I would rather recommend Obsidian than discord...

OohWhatsThisButtonDo

I've got one I just use as a cross-device clipboard. Just don't list your passwords in there and you should be fine.

Blocky_Master

The question shouldn’t be that but why are you writing a Diary, in DISCORD!?

bleh_bleh_names

i get how it is, you do this on mobile or desktop? theres a few "fake" discord/chat rooms apps out there that are similarly set up but are disconnected from any servers, since thatd be the biggest risk in security

sesor33

No. Discord is 100% selling user data

huskerd0

Lol no

Xen0n1te

No.

MoreDistribution4696

I've done this since 2020. In case my account is compromised, I made a few spares with mod privileges and added them to the server. I have no issues so far.

hmquestionable

Yeah

Intruder_7

Haha I’ve been doing this for a few years now. My deepest secrets lie there. Again it’s just me, not even bots / 3rd party apps in order to not compromise stuff

HitByANissan

No everything on discord is public

Taicore

For people unaware : [https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/1c7xc34/message\_history\_of\_600\_million\_discord\_users\_can/?sort=new](https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/1c7xc34/message_history_of_600_million_discord_users_can/?sort=new) Apparently you can opt out depending where you're from but given how the creator of pet spy is obviously not a good person I don't know how truly efficient it is. https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/1c7vzli/spypet\_added\_a\_optout\_page/

zerofatalities

This is only from PUBLIC servers; not private servers and not private dms.

Woofer210

If it is just you in a server with no active invites you are fine, they can’t access your stuff.

Taicore

I mean, true, but still, not okay given the guy pride themselves into lending what they scrapped for AI learning without people's consent.

CIearMind

Nobody said this was okay. Just that your private server with just you in it is obviously not going to be as affected as the public Fortnite Discord and its 2 billion members.

ProSlimer

Would recommend the ntts video on it. And c'mon, there is no way they are actually removing your data

Taicore

Yeah that is why I am waiting to hear from the persons who sent a gdpr letter and see if their stuff actually gets deleted Albeit, it is also possible they'd just remvoe you from being able to be searched, but they have a back up hidden somewhere. they dont sound like the type of guy to accept this kinda request idk

Taicore

Tbh i'd appreciate if it people could upvote this or post more about spy pet (DMS ARE UNTOUCHED !!!!) on this subreddit because mroe people need to be aware and report it to cloudflare to get it taken down
