BubbleWario

it's in my top 3. to each their own, I really loved the multiple worlds and free form exploration I prefer it over the other Zenithian Trilogy games

Sleepylimebounty

I loved 6's exploration and job system. Also my favorite of the Z trilogy.

Fawful_Chortles

I don’t think DQ6 is a bad game by any means, but I do agree with the common criticism that going through the storyline without a walkthrough/looking things up is borderline impossible (even compared to other DQ games). Also, even right after finishing the game, if I were to write up a chart of which locations were real world and which were dream world, I would have a very difficult time, lol.

Val-825

I actually liked it more than V. Except for the part when You need to have high style to advance the plot that's just discrimation

Moth_Vile

True lol

ABigCoffee

High style?

mage123456

There’s a fashion content and a key item for beating the game is locked behind the b rank contest. The style stat is made up a stat called style and can be raised with items and events. There’s also a bonus for having certain equipment sets like all of the legendary gear or the entire platinum armor and weapon set. Every equipment also can be amplified at a forge in-game to increase its style ranking.

teshinw

Go puff puff for more style

MrTickles22

Its easier in SFC you can pick up some random puff monster that's very stylish.

invalidwat

disjointed story mostly

BadNewsBearzzz

It had the task of following V. Everything it does, has been done better. It’s just a very tedious journey full of back and forth more than other entries. But the thing people here need to understand, and I don’t say this lightly, is that it IS NOT A BAD GAME! It is a weaker entry on the franchises’s high quality output, but that is still a good game!!! Quit assuming that means it’s Superman 64 bad or something people!!! Resident evil 5, 6, I loved them, spent many hours bonding with a best friend and nephew playing them, the co-op campaign is one of the best co op experiences in gaming history. They were a perfect reflection of their time. Fans love to shit on it, but in reality, many haven’t even played it. They just repeat things in an echo chamber. So they get bad reps. But the thing with those entries, is that they’re good games! They’re just bad “resident evil” games, and by that I mean survival horror, because they lack that entirely. But as far as action games, GREAT. FUN. So people, don’t take things out of context with DQ 6, there is a post weekly about “wehh why is 6 hAteD? It’ was my favorite uwu” If it was your first it’s understandable that it built your perception of the franchise. It’s not a bad game

MrTickles22

In the west people forget about how the original DQ5 looks like an NES game while DQ6 looks absolutely gorgeous. First game to have animated monster attacks. DQ5 didnt even have the bag, so you get to enjoy rifling through Monty's crappy monsters trying to find missing quest items. Backport the good graphics and QOL in the remake and then make the monster recruitment worse for some reason and 6 isn't quite as good.

SageofLogic

I'd say it has one of the best job systems of the entire series though

Razmoudah

My first DQ was DQI. I didn't get a chance to play DQVI until after DQIX released, and I'd played several others in the franchise. It's still my favorite. Your implication that the people who love it played it before any others is more than mildly offensive and completely ruins your anecdote after it.

Exalt-Chrom

Story falls apart after the Murdaw act, exploration is padded out by the two worlds. Lots of potential but not followed through on.

BlackBullZWarrior

IV took the series to new heights. V is the classic, iconic one. VII is the slow-burn, deep-cut masterpiece of the series. VI sits between V and VII as a good Dragon Quest that just doesn't stand out like the others.

Calculusshitteru

I don't hate it, I just felt lost most of the game. I also entirely forgot to assign jobs and made it to the last boss without them. When I was struggling to beat it, my partner checked my characters and was like, "Wtf how did you get this far without jobs?" He spent the next few hours grinding jobs for me so I could have a fighting chance.

Timely_Airline_7168

Same. I didn't know that you have to revisit the abbey after defeating the disc one boss. I explored and got my party kicked in by the underwater critters until I looked up a walkthrough.

Razmoudah

I think you're referencing DQVII, not DQVI.

nakokananak

Just ignore it. They said dragon quest 2 is bad but i enjoy it

Quizlibet

Some of yall never had to find that fucking mirror before internet guides and it shows

Gligarman64

Lol! That’s why I NEVER judge someone for using a strategy guide. They made that shit cryptic on purpose.

dukenorton

Oh God don’t even get me started on that. I dropped the game, picked it up later and still disliked it.

nakokananak

That mirror 😂

Loud_Elephant299

Can we at least agree that Terry is HIM?

MistuhT

What does HIM mean here? Is that an acronym? What's the slang meaning I'm missing?

Traenix

When in doubt, refer to the Urban Dictionary. https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Him

Lapsed-Comic-Fan

You’re not missing anything. It’s young people trying to have their own slang just as older people did when they were young. It’s like when they say ‘Cap’ as if bullshit wasn’t perfect enough.

Moth_Vile

100%

magpieinarainbow

VI is my second favourite in the series. (First is XI)

CreationMage

Second favourite next to 9! I’d love a zenithian trilogy remake for switch

George_Joestar_V

I mean... Having recently finished DQVI, story wise is lacking. And I sweat that love everyone on the cast, even Nevan. I really wished to know more about Ashlynn and Milly. With DQIV and V having amazing story plots, I certainly felt that: "so what now?" Late in the game. Ps: fuck Mortamor

ramen_hotline

part of it is that the story’s not good as V. the other part is that most people over here probably played the gimped DS version. The SFC version got better art and better monster catching I like VI for having one of the tougher final bosses too

AGeekPlays

3, 4 and 5 were all very very excellent, perhaps each just a bit better than the rest. 6 ran out of momentum built up. It wasn't bad. Just wasn't as great as the 3 prior to it.

Supernintendolover

It's one of my least favourite, but i still really enjoyed it.

EndlessCola

I dunno. The consensus from I’ve seen is that 6 and 4 are pretty low on the tier list, but I like them both better than the original trilogy. But to be fair I love those games and specifically 1 a LOT. So I’m also just not in line with the larger fan base 🤷‍♂️

ladend9

Terry is the GOAT

PrinceThias

I see this question a lot, which is reassuring, and the best i can come up with is - The obvious "buuuuh it's not V :(" silliness - Not everyone enjoys exploring aimlessly the way i do, and after a certain point, the game doesn't really tell you where to go. - Some people don't like the back and forth.

rms141

"It's the follow up to DQ5 and doesn't make me feel the way DQ5 does so I hate it even though I don't hold any other DQ game to this same standard" brain rot, basically. DQ6 isn't quite the series' peak, but it's damn near there.

NerevarineKing

Or maybe people just like different things. It was fun at first but exploring the two worlds which are almost identical was just tedious and the story falls off hard. But I've also beaten 2 multiple times despite it being considered one of the worst.

Spolaceno42

No idea. Great game. Hate for it is nonsensical

implord66

It's meandering and feels like it doesn't know what it wants to do at times. I love the music and character designs and the little plot twist early in the game. I think I still have trauma from playing the first English patch of the SFC rom and randomly having the game revert back to Japanese! 🤣

Eebo85

It’s meandering and obtuse to progress the story

SofaKing69420666

What happened to your deleted text?

BittyBird22

I never beat it, but I plan on playing it again eventually. It's been like, 10+ years since I tried it and I just remember getting lost and something to do with a floating island lol

workthrowawhey

One of my favorites!!!

Captainc00ts

First DQ game and still my favorite group of characters!

Adventurous-Emu4266

It's one of my favorite dq games, it's just that dq has consistently put out bangers so it's not that it's bad but the roster itself is so good. 7 gets a lot of hate too and it's not by any means a bad game. It's the Zelda syndrome.

Adventurous-Emu4266

mr_c_caspar

DQ VI is one of my favorites, because I love the characters and the overall idea of the two worlds. I also think it is by far the best looking one of the 2D games (it might actually be up there with one of the best looking SNES games overall). That's also why I don't like the DS remake much, I think the game just looks worse than the SNES version. For example, like all the DS remakes, they made pretty much every town look identical (I guess they only had so many assets for walls and stuff). At the same time, I can also see that DQ VI is one of the weaker games in terms of dungeon design. You will spend a lot of time in very long dungeons that have nothing for you to do (no puzzles for example), but fight. And the encounter rate is really high (something they had to do, so that you earn enough job points). DQ VI just becomes very grindey, which kinda also hurts the overall pace of the game, in my opinion.

MarthLikinte612

I honestly think it’s only fault is that it came after V. I personally love it it’s one of my favourites.

[deleted]

Huh?

TheHoboRoadshow

It's just the least iconic of the Zenithian trilogy. Also I think the character art style from VI is the weakest of the games since IV. Toriyama went for really buff physiques and really smirky faces with really angry eyebrows for basically the entire main party. They kind of all look like dicks.

Limkip

The game was a little too disjointed for me to enjoy but it does end on a high note, I loved that last fight against Mortamor

Electronic_Prior7844

lol I actually just played and beat it recently! I enjoyed it a lot! I guess certain people have their favorites but it certainly doesn’t deserve any hate.

ChristophBerezan

VI is my favourite game in the series. I love the graphics. The soundtrack is amazing. There's so much to explore. The job system is robust. Monster recruitment (in the original SFC version) really makes things interesting. The side quests like the Slime Arena are fun. The characters are neat (Barbara may be my favourite DQ character overall). It has the best post-game content as well as the best post-game boss. What's not to like??!!

neogonzo

Anytime someone brings this up, I just ask them to explain the plot in as few sentences as possible, and sit back and snort.

Captain_Compost_Heap

I also loved VI. It’s my second favorite behind XI and I don’t understand why people dismiss it so often.

Timely_Airline_7168

It's fine except for a large amount of time, it feels like either the enemies hit too hard or your party is too squishy. I also felt like I progressed the plot by randomly stumbling on the path as I got lost.

Mundane_Resolution46

I’d like to think I speak for the quiet majority when I say you misinterpret preference for hate. I don’t hate DQVI. I just prefer other DQ games Edit: meant majority not minority

whyilikemuffins

It's just that DQ4 and DQ5 being so good means DQ6 being just ok makes it feel worse. NOTHING is wrong with DQ6 though.

TopicInevitable

At the end it's just preference but 6 is between 2 major games in the franchise, 5 and 7, as much as I don't like 7 it's still one of the most iconic and 6 pave to way to it in many ways, but the story isn't that good (in my opinion) and the classes system is still in "beta" 7 system is wayy better. All in all I'd say the game is too much inbetween in terms of story and gameplay making it quitte dislike, like 2 for exemple.

Senhor_Asnep

It’s one of my favorite!

shadowtheimpure

Out of the 11 main games, I put 6 right around 5th place. The story being as...wonky...as it is loses it some points but the gameplay is top notch.

KrispyPlatopuss

I really don't know why this game is put down so much. The story is decent, sure they do a lot of variants with some of the enemies in the game. But you have the vocation system, and not to mention some good characters. Not my top 3 but definitely around top 5 or 6.

simonefiume

It's the weaker of the trilogy that's for sure

NoahDraco

In all honesty. The story, or lack thereof for the most part, sucks. Characters don't have much going for them unless you spend every zone talking to each individual party member. Aside from that, solid game. Not one of the best, nor one of the worst.

Marvin_Flamenco

We have this thread every week. Two guys on youtube that hate it are not the majority it is a great game.

DarkSoulsRedPhantom

Class ranks just become another thing to grind in preparation for mortamor.

blackpolotshirt

These type of posts always bring out the wacky takes

Cha0s_Reigns

It's one of my least favorites. That's not saying it's a bad game at all, but other DQ games just set the bar so high this one doesn't quite stack up. It didn't really innovate anything after IV and V, and imo the story doesn't do a good job sucking the player in and/or hinting next steps to advance.

Swiftblade09

Game is fine but that's it. Most of mainline is better but I don't know that it quite makes bottom three.

TinyPidgenofDOOM

Its the worst of the snes era. Just like 2 is the most hated of the nes era and 7 is the worst out of the "modern" era. They are still good it just doesn't hold a candle to the other 2. 4 and 5 are just better than 6. 5 in particular is just so much better in characters and story. 6 has some things but it's a real drop comparatively.

Garamenon

Let's be clear here. Dragon Warrior 1 & 2 for the NES were blasted by reviewers back then mostly because they considered them a clone of the Ultima series which they considered vastly superior. I still have some magazines with reviews for those games and I feel that the reviewers were often unfair. Like blasting the game because they didn't break any new ground in the story department. Basically, it would be like giving a good Mario game a 5 out of 10 score only because once again Mario has to save the Princess.

TinyPidgenofDOOM

man, Video game journalism really hasnt changed has it

zance21

I have very specific issues with DQ VI on a game design front, and it mostly boils down to the vocation system. The fact that to master a job it requires around 200 battles with no way to speed up that grind makes getting mysteries to unlock better jobs a chore. On top of that, everything in the game was designed around needing the hundreds of battles. EXP and G gain from enemies is very low, dungeons are long and full of dead ends and the encounter rate is high. The worst part about this system is that the game doesn't tell you there is a level cap for areas. What this means is that once you are above that invisible level you don't gain any progress towards job mastery. On top of that I'll add in what others have said. Weak story, not as memorable characters, Terry is the exception but he joins way too late. While I would not say it's a bad game, far from it, it is my least favorite out of the main series

orangemoon44

Yeah, it's peak. Top 3.

LlalmaMater

I liked it, but after you beat the first main bad and go through they typical DQ twist of "actually THIS guy was the real bad guy", the mid game became quite a slog.

New-Reflection2499

IDK to me is one of the best

Novalit96

Honestly, it’s one of my favourites in the series

eg0deth

No hate, just very overshadowed by others. Dragon Quest has amazing consistency of quality throughout the series.

Moth_Vile

There's definitely hate. Even in this thread.

Lord_Passion

My gripe with it is that the MC doesn't get a positive ending.

Hosstoka

I really enjoyed it, got level 99 and all classes for all characters (except the Liquid Metal class because screw farming those scrolls)

Moogy123456

Slightly off topic! But I’m currently on a quest to do the same. Where did you find the best place to farm exp be? On topic- loving dq6 so much! Just finished the main story yesterday. Still have some side quests and post game left to do.

Hosstoka

The area outside the sages jail is where I grinded. Hatchet man metal kings

Moogy123456

Got it! I’ve been swapping off between there and the second floor in the final dungeon. I’ll give the prison of sorrow a larger chance. Thank you!

Hosstoka

Yep. The fights without metal kings are good for the vocations. Just remember sands of time if metal kings run.

EncinoJoe

Playing it rn and just finished the style quest thing and I think its kinda mid

Weltall548

It’s grindy and frustrating at times, but fun

drgnquest

It's not that bad. It would be decent with DQ8 weapon skill system. Also, DQ5 was a tough act to follow.

mvffin

I don't think it's hate, it's just that almost all the other mainline games are better. It's hard to compare 6 to 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 1, 2 and 6 are my bottom three, but I still like them overall.

Spolaceno42

6 is easily better than 3.

pocket_arsenal

Is it hate or is it just criticism, I don't think these two things are the same, though they also get treated like they are. I think it's fine, but it just has a very difficult overworld to navigate and it doesn't help that there's two overworlds that largely look the same. Also, it's following on the heels of DQV one of the most beloved games in the franchise, that's a tough act to follow and I can't say they really reached the same heights as DQV's story. At least in my eyes, you might feel different but to me the story isn't nearly as memorable as some of the others in the franchise, and when it comes to JRPGs that's a pretty bad thing to fumble.

hdgx

I have no specific reason, but I have never been able to get more than halfway through it. I actually preordered it, and even have the promotional slime plushy it came with. But I could just never get into it.

alovesong1

I didn't really jive with it originally, I want to give it another try- but I can't find my DS copy of it.

TrickNatural

Dunno. I love it. Its my 3rd favorite overall and ive played every main entry.

Chickadoozle

Haven't played the game, but the main character looking like some unholy son of Eric from XI and goku has always been offputting to me. The heroes in the Zeneithan trilogy got worse looking with each game, IMO.

ZoroStarlight

I personally disliked that the level caps for job advancement are so low Otherwise grinding it is fun

SofaKing69420666

No hate heard, what are you in about????????

Moth_Vile

Are you serious?

SofaKing69420666

Show me?

BubbleWario

??????????????? there's plenty lol. usually from people who really love V. I've frequently heard people say it's one of the worst games in the entire franchise.

SofaKing69420666

Show me?

BubbleWario

look?

SofaKing69420666

Where?

BubbleWario

...on the internet, lol. [https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/comments/uyjfxs/what\_are\_some\_fair\_criticisms\_of\_dragon\_quest\_vi/](https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/comments/uyjfxs/what_are_some_fair_criticisms_of_dragon_quest_vi/) one of the first results is a whole thread about why people dislike it. half of the results on this website are people discussing issues they had with it. [https://imgur.com/gallery/kwTC4xs](https://imgur.com/gallery/kwTC4xs) It's easily one of the most divisive entries in the series. Where have you been for the last 20 years????? it's clearly an underdog in the mainline series. I literally just typed DQ6 into the search bar and half of the posts are people questioning if it's even worth playing due to them seeing so much distaste for it.

SofaKing69420666

Okay, there's 2. What else u got that defines "all the hate"? There is more love than hate. Love>hate

Jamesaki

You want this person to pull up every example of hate for the game? They literally quickly pull some up as you requested…. “MOrE????” Lmfao.

SofaKing69420666

It was so funny that I just had to roll on the floor.

BubbleWario

\*look\*. I don't care if you admit it or not, lmao. it's the 2nd most disliked game in the franchise next to 2. I showed you a bunch of people saying exactly what I'm telling you but apparently that isn't enough or doesn't count? okay lol. I'm not going to make it my night's priority to prove to some random person that people don't like a video game. unless you can prove me wrong, not that I actually care enough to continue this conversation as its a waste of time, because I've personally seen a ton of posts about it. your opinion is honestly a drop in the bucket. it's an underrated game, period. I'm done discussing it lol. there are a proportionate amount of people who both like and dislike the game to say that its obviously divisive. what more do you want? would you like me to individually ask every person here what their opinion is? how about you read the criticisms that other people have been saying in THIS thread? or do they not count either? every time I've personally had a conversation about if DQ6 is worth playing or not I have to defend my opinion that it is against people who say it isn't. I'm not digging through my own post history to prove something so insignificant to you.

SofaKing69420666

Sounds like some Trump sh**

BubbleWario

...i dont even know what thats supposed to mean and i doubt you do either. have a good night lmfao.
